I have to say, I didn't watch Tom that much...I liked that he was a Dakota boy, but Peter was The Man. Since they have been gone I've been a channel-flipper, although Brian is usually my choice. Watching SNL tonight sealed the deal. I can only hope that his appearance wasn't a complete marketing ploy...that he enjoyed hosting the show at least a little! I will watch him from now on because I can't help but admire the guy for stepping completely out of his box and opening himself up to public and professional ridicule. 2. In addition, his insulting high school slang, the twisted adolescent use of the term "gay" in a way that reinforces the confusion and perhaps the hate between being gay and being lame. In this case, it was only Brian who was at best lame, at worst shameful (hello, Don Imus).

3. Please let SNL die a quick and sudden death. It has spent years now languishing in a slow painful decline, which "everybody" acknowledges. Put it out of its misery.

4. I am sorry that my candidate, Barack Obama, decided to do a walk-on during such a dismal display--that continues to "grasp at straws." Sorry, Lorne, it's time for a swan song.

I loved it. I'm 28 years old and for some reason I have always enjoyed the Nightly News at NBC. Brian's joke about the new set on the other night's broadcast was unexpected (I laughed out loud). SNL was even better. When I first heard of it I was slightly concerned, but for no reason. As an entertainer myself I was delighted with his performance on SNL. You aren't a stuffed shirt as too many TV viewers imagine news anchors, you are human being with a life like the rest of us. Hopefully, that round object you carry after the camera light goes out is soccer or basketball, not the weight of the world atop your shoulders. I want to know that my news comes from a fellow human being who spills coffee on his shirt, forgets to mail his phone bill, picks up the dog's poop up, and has a sense of humor. Your schtick on SNL tonight was respectful of your job and a fun look at you as a person. We need to laugh at ourselves more because come Monday you'll be back in the chair having to tell us about our leader's hubris and stupidity. When we laugh at ourselves, we cannot scream at someone else. When we laugh, we poke fun at ourselves, our values, our stereotypes and our masks. I loved the skit with you being interviewed as a fireman and less than excited prize winner. How much truth was contained in those skits -- maybe from personal experience from the other side of the mike. Laugh at yourself and others can never wound you.

And...I think you were wonderful! Great job. Right up there with John McCain singing Barbra!!

Executive summary: Brian Williams should keep his day job. Reading cue cards, acting, and attempting accents aren't his forte. And probably never would be. Brian redeems himself when he's in his news anchor element in pre-recorded segments. I swear he has a bald spot on the top of his head near the back. I duly took in his costume changes to shape his image from button-downed stiff suit to casual male in shirttails, jeans, sweaters.

SNL kicked off with a fake cackling Hillary (the fabulous Amy Poehler) in a white bridal dress Halloween costume that the other Democratic presidential candidates and "Bill Clinton" mistook for a witch's costume. You can run, Hillary, but you can't hide.

"Bill Richardson" was in an Al Gore costume. "Joe Biden" and "Chris Dodd" as identical Sponge Bobs. "We cancel each other out."

"Mike Gravel," strapped into a strait jacket, handed "Hillary" a bag of loose Milk Duds he "found on the bus." "Hillary" opened the bag and took a whiff. "They're not Milk Duds."

A guy in a Barack Obama mask enters the room. The guy whips off the mask and underneath - the real Obama! "I enjoy being myself," he says. "I'm not going to change who I am just because it's Halloween."

Obama turns to the camera and intones: "Live from New York. It's Saturday Night!"

BriWi emerges on stage. Gets a standing O. Whaddaya expect? It's all NBC cross promotion during the first week of November sweeps!

He's nervous. Crooked, frozen mouth muscles. "It's such a thrill to be here hosting Saturday Night Live," Brian reads off the cue cards. "Now is this really a good idea? Should I be hosting this show?"

Probably not. Brian is stiff and his delivery is sing-song but promises "You're gonna see a whole new Brian Williams."

The first skit sucked. Brian played a firefighter promoting fire safety on what appeared to be a local cable TV show - "Bronx Beat w/Betty & Jodi." Two gum-cracking, fast talking New Yorkers. Williams, in a fake mustache, just sits there in his fireman's uniform. Why he assumed what appeared to my ears to be a bad Southern accent is beyond me. Maybe to poke fun at Hillary and her phony, opportunistic accent switches. The two gals leave "Paul" the firefighter to finish the show. Grade: D for lame.

Next Brian's a high school principal shooting a TV show - "Riley's Way" - with cap and gown-clad students on a swing. Principal "Barry Jeffers" plays his part until he finds out he's not going to be in the sequel. Instead of parroting his script, he tells one kid to "go to hell," the next, "lose 10 pounds," and the third, "you're gay." Okay, that proves Brian can swear.

Brian kept putting his hands in his pocket of his principal's khaki pants that appeared to be a bit too tight around the crotch. Maybe he didn't want anyone to see the outline of his manhood. I did. Grade: D for dumb.

To prove how "cool" Williams is, the bumper graphic had Williams in black & white dressed like Walter Winchell in front of an ancient manual typewriter. Had a Winchell bowler and a cig hanging from his lips.

The third skit was a send up of the frenzy Publisher's Clearinghouse winners usually work themselves into upon hearing they've won the $15 million prize. Only Brian Williams as "Carl Bacon" answers the door eating an apple. The Prize Patrol chick with balloons is practically orgasmic pumping herself up with phony excitement to spur Williams to react. Nothing. She shows him videos of other people's off-the-charts reactions. I laughed my ass off here. The taciturn Carl finally gets excited when a pizza delivery guy shows up with free cheesy bread. Even so Williams has a hard time getting excited. Grade: B for Williams. A+ for the other talent.

The best segment is next. A pre-taped "Day In The Life Of Brian Williams." This is where his "legendary humor" comes out in self-deprecating jabs. He stands in front of 30 Rock before he starts work waiting for "someone to recognize me." Even so the NBC publicity pimps had to cross-promote other NBC news talent flashing pictures of guys like MSNBC's golden boy Keith Olbermann.

He plays his favorite "game" of throwing pennies out a high floor window. Al Roker and Matt Lauer get "hit" on the street below. An irritated Matt says "What kind of an asshole throws pennies from a window?" His delivery is well-timed and funny. Now Matt should do SNL.

The funniest line of "Weekend Update" which I wished Brian had anchored a la Jon Stewart (they want to humanize Mr. Stiff but not tarnish his news cred) was after the set up to Joe Biden's line from this week's debate where he attacked Rudy Guiliani as a guy with sentences consisting of "a noun, verb, and 9/11."

Rudy's fake retort: "Joe Biden sucks 9/11."

The fake Hollywood producer clown blabbing about the writers' strike was sad but true. "I'd love to have $200,000 [writers' pay] but I have $20 million."

The fake Larry King interview with Amy Poehler as J.K. Rowling was hilarious! Ol' Lar queried about Dumbledore's gay outing. "J.K." showed deleted scenes with an obviously gay Dumbledore being pestered by "Miranda," the Maggie Smith character. J.K. alludes to Dumbledore's frequenting gay bars "Manhole" and "Wizard's Wand."

Then to show out of touch Larry is, the fake Larry teases the next interview (but all we have to do is go back to that Jerry Seinfeld debacle this week when Larry asked if his show "Seinfeld" had been canceled. To which the stupified Jerry replied, "The final episode had 75 million viewers."

"The Sexiest Woman Alive! Ann-Margret is here so stay tuned!

There's a funny bit where Williams comes into the Democratic debate green room to go over ground rules. When he leaves the candidates bandy about ideas to derail Hillary. Amy Poehler is priceless as "Dennis Kucinich." She had a short black shoe polish wig and fake ears.

There's a dumb skit at the end where Williams is taking a news meeting with sycophantic employees where he's deciding on a new "Nightly News" theme song. The open ends up like a cop TV show with a James Bondish Brian brandishing a gun.

This is why I haven't watched "Saturday Night Live" since the days of the Coneheads, "Jane, you ignorant slut," "Cheesebuga, cheesbuga, cheesbuga," (based on the Albanian-owned sweat-and-grease smelly restaurants - Belushi was Albanian).

Brian was forced to introduce (perfunctorily, I might add) the "music" group, Feist. The lead singer is a stringy-haired young guitar-playing babe eerily reminiscent of a dark Sarah Jessica Parker. Her thin, weak, tinny voice makes Britney Spears appear operatic.

Brian Williams promised he wouldn't sing on the show. I wish he had...

My husband and I have watched both Nightly News and SNL for years. We appreciate the honesty of your news delivery and also those questions still unanswered, yet to be fulfilled. However, your apperance on SNL was a masterpiece. It was one of the best shows we have seen in years. Your delivery, deadpan, accent, etc. was far better than any Hollywood celebrity in recent years. I made a point to watch SLN when I heard Brian Williams would be on.
Going on the show just revealed again his self assurance -and guts.

You rocked on SNL. I thought that you were quite funny. I didn't quite know what to expect or how it would go since you are such a straight forward professional.

Your opening was really funny, and I liked your Bronx Beat skit and the SNL Short with the penny tossing (nice). I also liked the Nightly News opening with you as a Bond-like character. The Clearing House skit was slow until the end with the cheese bread. That was cute. The part that got me the most was the 'Graduation' skit when you said "'Go to hell', 'You need to lose 10 lbs' and 'You're gay'." I was busting up! That was sooooooo funny. I was waiting for more though throughout the hour. They should have had you in more of the broadcast. Shame on SNL for not including you in more. You had me laughing quite a bit this evening. You should totally do this again. I watch your broadcast every weeknight with the news, so this was nice to see a goofier side. Congratulations and good luck with everything that you do.

I haven't watched SNL in years. I saw the commercials this week for Brian Williams hosting and was curious.

I was not let down. Both my wife and I were stunned at the end of the first skit when Mr. Williams actually ACTED as a character (unlike the lauded LeBron James hosting where he was basically propped in a scene as himself every single time and the regular cast acted around him.)

Kudos, Mr. Williams, for a job more than well done. The fun you were having showed through in every skit. Rest easy, your integrity as a newsman remains easily intact.

Thanks for a very enjoyable evening's entertainment!

Yay Brian! I was excited to see how well he did and would watch SNL every time he is on it! It's nice to see people come out of their shell publicly to entertain. I loved the fire fighter bit. I do hope however, that was doesn't happen is other anchors who are not funny who want to host because Brian did well. Brian, you are a very talented individual and did a great show on SNL. Perhaps, you should do it again sometime in the future or even just a few skits in the future. It really gives you some personality that the NBC Evening News just can't show. Many well known individuals, just don't have the ability to laugh at themselves and show their lighter side but you did it with flying colors.

After all, Mr. Williams gets to report some really sad news at times. It really helps to lighten things up once in a while.

The news in this world will create itself, and Mr. Williams is one of the fine examples of those who deliver it on a daily basis. I used to watch Saturday Night Live every week, years ago. Over the last several years, I've only bothered with it a few times (when I was bored). The show hosted by Brian Williams was so good, however, that I'm going to pay a lot more attention to SNL in the future. The show was consistently funny, which was a pleasant surprise; but the biggest surprise was Mr. Williams, who could have had a successful career as a comic actor. He was one of the best hosts of last ten years.

Couldn't have been more impressed with his stage presence and easy style. He fit in remarkably well in as a true 'professional'. I find it adds some 'presence' to his body of work as an anchor as it shows a feeel for both the craft and for audiences. Great job. You did not however gain a new viewer, I never changed channels when Brokaw left.

I have watched Brian since his very first broadcast on MSNBC covering a TWA plane crash. I thought he was awesome then and after watching last night's SNL I still think so. His skits were hilarious. Way to go Brian, that was a great show. Loved the "day in the life of Brian Williams", and the pennies being tossed at the Today Show folks. Loved the publishing clearing house bit with the pizza delivery getting the excitement. The whole thing was funny... I've seen you on Conan's show so I knew you had a comedian's side. Thanks for sharing your funny side with us. I just hope that just once, even for a second, they use your new "theme" song bit on the nightly news. I thought it was hilarious - he was great showin' his Jersey roots on Bronx Beat, and didn't look out of his element at all. Though I have to admit, I think the funniest part of all was during the SNL Digital Short when he was throwing pennies out his window at Al Roker and Matt Lauer.

For those of you who can't accept the fact that the people on TV - news or somewhere else - are actually real people with senses of humor, get a life. To say that you'd actually take him less seriously as a news anchor because (God forbid) he's a human being like the rest of us, YOU are the ones who need to step OUT of your box, and stop asking him to step back into his.

Now let's see if they can crack the machine that is Stone Philips.

Brian Williams was great. The "inside look" at his news anchor job was the highlight. All I want to know is this: Brian Williams used to wear cooler shirts, i.e., white banker collars with color-striped shirts, and he doesn't anymore...it was a great trademark look. Anyway, to the few who have reacted stiffly along the line that this was inappropriate for a network anchorman, my guess is that they couldn't last 30 seconds in a discussion or debate with Brian Williams, so get off your high horse.

Brian was an excellent host! The monologue had me laughing out loud..."is this really a good idea?" I was expecting a cameo...maybe Tom Brokaw, but Obama was a great fit too! We know from appearances on Leno and Conan that Brian has a sense of humor...even industry insiders have said for a long time that he's incredibly funny in real life. Brian didn't do anything that was "over the line"...which is a credit to him, the writers, and the cast that you can still be funny without going with blue material. He did an excellent job and I hope he'll do it again in the future!

I haven't watch SNL in a few years. However, when I heard that Brian Williams was on, well I HAD to watch (er, sorry I mean record) it.

I am so glad I did. I wondered for a long time if Mr. Williams could ever crack a smile or really laugh out loud. Not only could he spoof himself really well, he made ME laugh out loud a LOT!

He's a funny guy. I'm so surprised. I watch him do the news every weekday night. He can be slightly sarcastic on occasion, but downright funny? Who knew?

Great job Mr. Williams. If the news doesn't work out for you, I'd give comedy a real try!

Don't often watch SNL because we are in our 70's and like our sleep. Stayed up to watch Brian and were rewarded. We've watched Brian from when he was on the weekend news show.He always made us feel that we were getting the straight skinny from a real journalist.

America hardly knew ye! I was let in on the secret that you were hiding your inner comic after seeing you on Leno, Letterman, O'Brien, etc! I always watch you whenever you're anchoring. You are especially brilliant when you do the top stories(loved your take on Hurricane Katrina victims)your compassion for others (our men & women in the military), and the political firestorms regarding Capitol Hill, The White House et al. You are definitely and have always been professional regarding such stories good and bad news. I was so excited and could hardly wait when it was announced that you would be hosting SNL!!! You were such a natural, a pro through & through. You look a lot like James Denton from "Desperate Housewives". Maybe that should be your next assignment as Mike's brother!!!

You were great as the fireman from the Bronx, loved you as the disgruntled principal from a teeny bopper show, then you really cracked me up as Carl Bacon! You couldn't get excited about the $15 million you won, but you almost lost it when you got free cheesy bread!!! I was rather disappointed when you didn't sit in for Seth Myers on the Weekend Update set. I loved your follow-me-to-work schtick. Too bad, we won't be privy to the new theme song for NBC Nightly News!!! ;^)

In closing Mr. Williams, you were sharp, witty, absolutely sexy as all get out; therefore, it is safe for you to leave your day job. Anybody that says you sucked, not funny, was stiff deserves the ultra conservative wooden statue Charlie Gibson! Only player haters would disagree with the rest of us who are smart enough to know the difference and can say, "Wow, he does go potty, scratch and fart just like the rest of us!!!" Brian was funny doing HIS OWN thing! Here in Canada, we enjoyed the show except for the PCH skit. Who wrote that? The writer's strike hasn't yet begun!The best part was still his own thing. Carl Bacon aka Brian is truly the Pizza man. I wish Carl would buy me a James Blunt concert ticket. Now Brian calling yourself is a little over the top. As for your opening James Bond just try it once on the evening show and watch your rating go so high Charlie and Katie will fall out of their chairs. Did you ever get that call from Tom?

You made me proud when you cleaned up the debate issue with girl friend and sister Hillary. It's always great when you can laugh at yourself and make others laugh.

Brian through out the show I could only thing I'd like to see you in a Afro just once. When I visited NBC and set in the News room I called myself Brian Williams in living color don't change your channel with my assistance Peaches ( my daughter). I was Brian for a few minutes and we did get to see the SNL studio.

That was the best show I've seen in a long time and Brian will will download you in a sweatshirt as we might never see that again in our life time.

I hope the Emmy committee was watching your a shoe in for a win. My family and friends on the East Coast called just to remind me of the show.

Lighten up. I caught about half the show and I thought it was very well done. It shows that people we believe to be nothing more than stuffed suits reading a teleprompter and are boring can step out of that mold and do something that has as much ad-lib to it as SNL does. Do you honestly believe that they stick to the script the entire 90 minutes? Give me a break. It was nice to see someone that I trust to deliver me the update of events around the world have a little fun and relax. Personally, I hope he does it again in the future.

Having watched BW on the news, I have seen him crack a few jokes before. I knew he could be funny when he wanted to or had the right story to work with. I thought the monolouge was clever when he turned to another camera ala Nightly News style and read his goals for the night. His Day in the Life of BW was funny, that's one for the highlight film. His firefighter skit was a little blah, but maybe it was a warmup act for him. I thought the Principal role was good and the new intro to the news was funny, but the Publishers Clearing House (which could have been done with any actor) was funny once BW got his cheesy sticks (then only could it have been for BW). It would have been nice to see him at least deliver a commentary on the weekend update, but perhaps that would affect his credentials. All in all, It was fun to watch BW do something fun. Sure is was a cross promo during sweeps week, but them Producer's get paid good money to come up with a host idea like this one, they earned their money. Looking forward to seeing BW on Monday night as always.

I didnt get to see the whole show...but I saw enough to say that Mr. Williams did a great job. He showed he has a sense of humour and isnt afraid to go outside his comfort zone. This by far was one of the best SNLs I have seen in years. Brian Williams was SO funny..I'm usually falling asleep during the show but I stayed up for the whole thing and it seemed to go by way too fast

Dear Mr.Williams, You were simply and absolutely terrific on Saturday Night Live!!! From the opening monologue to the last goodbye from the show you were awesome! I enjoyed all the skits you were in from the firefighter, Principal Jefferies, the lottery winner who really only cared about getting cheesy bread free, the scenes from talking about his typical day which included throwing pennies out the window down to Matt and Al, eating in the lunchroom with ropes and a guard(very funny!), leaving an inpsirational message to yourself, etc.. to meetings about a new music theme and finally the scene with the candidates at the Democratic Debates. I always thought of Brian as somewhat of a "stuffed shirt." There was no way that you would pull off a believable character with the SNL cast. I was looking for them to eat you up on the show. Not much surprises me; however, SNL was incredible tonight. Brian Williams has shocked us all. I actually enjoyed it. It is usually a bore to watch SNL nowadays; however, Mr. Williams made it enjoyable again. Thanks for a great show. Obviously, having been in front of the camera for all these years gave you "acting" abilities above those of other hosts. Very entertaining... I also loved the Barack Obama appearance.

I've been watching SNL since its beginning in the '70's and this is the best episode I've seen in years! Kudos to the writers, to NBC, and especially to Brian Williams who had the courage...not to mention the talent... to step out of his usual somber role as a nightly newscaster. In these days when there is so much sorrow to report, it is refreshing and encouraging to see someone like this step out and take himself not so seriously. And to those who commented that it was nice to see Brian "out of his comfort zone" I would just like to add that he did not seem to be out his comfort zone at all.

When Tom Brokaw left NBC, my son who was 5 years old at the time, wrote him to wish him well and tell him that he was an excellent newscaster. Why he felt a connection to Mr. Brokaw I'll never know, but he religiously watched Nightly News (filtered by me for content of course). I thought that no one would adequately fill his shoes, but Brian certainly did.

BTW Brian, don't let all the positive feedback go to your head...we still need you to be the voice of our world's news!

I really enjoyed SNL and almost didn't see it......I watch NBC for news and they said that he was hosting that night's show.............so I hung in there to watch it. I have always been a NBC news fan, sort of runs in the family. I thought Brian Williams did a great job and showed that he has another side. Why is anyone surprised? If you watch Mr. B on NBC Nightly News and listen, you will hear a real person, not a stuffed shirt reading a script. He slips in comments when you are least expecting it and reveals a person who is very much in touch with life. SNL had the best - I hope they know it.

I don't even watch SNL anymore but I had to catch it with Brian Williams hosting it.All I got to say that Mr.Williams in all the sketches he performed in did a marvelous job very reminiscent to when Rudy Giuliani hosted back in the '90's.Brian Williams did a better job than expected than most actors/actresses/comedians and singers who've been hosting SNL in the past.In Philly,Gov.Ed Rendell of PA is a great Eagles commentator and he's a politician,he's always confident with his commentary job and Mr.Williams was confident doing SNL for the first time and I hope he does an encore.He made the show so funny to watch.Note to Mr.Williams,my dad and brother-in-law were fireman at one time,my brother Ed who did constuction work for SNL's Seth Meyers recently(?),Ed is retired FDNY.Mr.Williams need work on your house call my brother Ed.And kudos to Barack Obama (great cameo appearance to open the show)

My husband and I have not watched SNL for a long time.
We sometimes watch the very beginning and then turn the station because it becomes way too silly and stupid. We watched on Sat night because of Brian W. being on the show. It was fantastic!! He could do the show all the time and bring back the lost viewers.

You did a great job on SNL. While I liked your stab at humor and even jokes about your own style and personality, I also really liked what you did during Bronx Tales. Not the skit that everyone else expereienced but the inside jokes and messages. First, thanks for carrying your Old Village Volunteer Fire Department helmet with you (script should have said Company 11 instead of 114 to match the helmet though). Plus, thanks for mentioning some of the other volunteers like Bruce George and Mike Spratford. It's been a long time since the days in Middletown (for both of us). But I give you high marks especially for this nice touch to connect to your roots!

Brian's opening monologue gave me the first big laughs from an SNL show in quite a while. He was very funny in all his characters, but I already knew he had a great sense of humor. I remember the first time I saw Brian on TV, I think perhaps his first time on the network. It was after the airliner crash and he did an incredible job of reporting a very tragic and unexpected event with what appeared to be very little support at the time.

Even though Brian Williams is great at being the serious news anchor, I knew he would ace SNL. If you have ever seen him on the news when they do the responses to their mail, he is not afraid to comment on the e-mails that ridicule his tie or shirt choices and to take it good-naturedly. I thought it was funny to see him do the skits but especially funny to see him poke fun at himself...or poke fun at the idea of him hosting SNL. And to have Feist on the same night was terrific. Of course a bonus, unannounced appearance from Obama was fantanstic. I think the people who are in important or serious roles in our society who are most loved...and most forgiven when they do the human thing and screw up...are those that acknowledge their imperfections...George W. could learn from their example...

I like your humor when you've been on talk shows, but I haven't laughed that hard at a SNL since Belushi. I hardly watch it anymore, but made sure I saw this one. I actually got hiccups. Your Fireman and the Day in the Life were the best. Your timing, facial expressions (or lack of one) not to mention the brookyln accent, was killer. You did better than some of the comedian hosts have. You just might be able to quit your day job. But don't!

After watching that clip, it makes me think how glad I am that I am snobby enough to avoid watching TV news in the first place.

Has anyone ever watched the movie, "Broadcast News"? TV news has gotten much worse than the movie could have possibly predicted.

I thought that Brian Williams was surprisingly terrific. Of course he is so good at the many tasks that he performs on a regular basis, and I could tell that he had a sense of humor before SNL. But his timing was excellent, I got a big kick out of it, since I've watched him do the news before he became the full time anchor. Congratualations on a wonderfully funny show, Mr. Williams! I watch every week faithfully and you have been one of the highlights of this season. Thank you for showing us your "other" side with such grace.
There are a few comments above mentioning that SNL should be cancelled, I completely disagree, but everyone is allowed an opinion. I suppose you don't have to watch it if you don't like it. Over the years there have been some seasons that were maybe a little puny here and there, but I look forward to SNL every Saturday night and have been doing so since my parents did all of the original skits from the early seasons. To this day my Pop uses a lot of the vocabulary from then, it' been passed down from one generation to the other and I'm so glad that my parents are cool enough to have watched it religiously.
Thanks for all of the laughs to everyone involved in creating this show every week. And for Brian Williams...Cheers! You were smashing. Loved the Brooklyn Beat for certain~which that always cracks me up, but your performance was one of a kind.

He did our hometown of Middletown,NJ proud.
I thought the fireman skit was hysterical considering he was a volunteer firemen in Middletown and he saved a cat from a burning house once. My sisters and I went to the same high school and he wasnt that funny back then, even when he worked at Perkins with my sisters he was prankish but not that funny. I absolutely loved Brian's performance on SNL. I just happened to watch the show that night, and I'm so glad that I did. I'm 29 and a consumer of news from a variety of sources, though I've pretty much completely avoided news shows... especially the combative, "who can talk the loudest" news-related shows that seem to be all over the channels. Yet, based on his performance on SNL, Brian seems like a news anchor I can relate to-- mainly for the fact that I know that he has a good sense of humor. I'm going to try out watching NBC's Nightly News for awhile-- I hope Brian's personality comes out even when he's delivering the news.

I thought Brian did a fantastic job on SNL!! His monologue let me know this was gonna be a fun show and it was. I really enjoyed seeing him in this entire different light than what I'm used to. I think I enjoyed it too because he's not an actor - he's not accustomed to doing anything like this and it made me feel more like a "regular" (but well-known) person was hosting. Obama showing up was nice I guess, but the evening belonged to Brian. I laughed so hard at his Bronx accent and the way he was acting as the school principal (that was great!) and I could NOT quit laughing at him and the announcer when he won the sweepstakes. They were equally hilarious, playing totally opposite. SNL is to be entertaining and it definitely was Saturday night. I thank Brian's family for talking him into it, for NBC for letting him do it, and to Brian...I thank you for being such a trouper. It was wonderful!!

I wished SNL had let Brian loose a little more. He was a "restrained" hilarious! Liked the fireman stint (was it written for him since he was a former volunteer?) and the "Bond" intro (lol). My hubby and I were amazed Brian could keep a deadpan face with the Pub. Clearinghouse skit too! Does Brian ALWAYS talk in that "newscaster's monotone?" Put him back on SNL and let him be WILD!

If you are a native New Yorker, you would understand that the accent Brian was putting on was a natural, Bronx Irish Catholic (bic) accent that was 100% on the money. Go speak to any NYFD firefighter and you will understand. I was peeing my pants listening to the way he nailed the facial expressions and the Bronx twang! Very funny stuff! We saw an inkling of how funny Brian Williams could be at the beginning of SNL's last season when he thought he was a candidate to fill Tina Fey's seat on Weekend Update. I fell out of my seat laughing and I'm guessing some other NBC execs did so, too! It is risky to tamper with the "gravitas" necessary to succeed in the evening news anchor role, but Mr. Williams came across as down to earth and able to poke fun at himself, while still being "in on the joke". Great job!

It's interesting that the best SNLs seem to be when you least expect it. That is to say, the hosts that don't usually do comedy for a living. Brian Williams was incredible. SNL has gone the way of Wayne Newton and other desperate Las Vegas has beens...it's time to pull the plug and let it die with what little dignity and grace it can. The 'comics' on the show now are angry, sad shadows of the great talent that used to bring us one laugh after another. Seems like it's more about polital posturing than comedy...ply your opinions somewhere else! We wanna be entertained, not reminded of the drivel that is going on around us. I am a regular viewer of Brian William's news show and sometimes have trouble concentrating on the news because he is so handsome. To me, he could be listed as the sexiest man in America (and a plus with the intelligence factor too). In my fantasy he was another Cary Grant kind of figure. I haven't watched SNL since Phil Hartman died. I think the humor is unbelievably corny most of the time. I tuned in to see Brian, and though he spoiled my fantasy of his Cary Grant image, I think there isn't anything Brian can't do. The show was well worth watching and he did a great job. Look at this man's credentials. Why the heck isn't HE running for President instead of these awful candidates we have to choose from? You're a good man Brian. While I'm on the blog...a few other thoughts. We are lifetime NBC Eve News watchers, transitioning easily from Tom to Brian. Although we are stereotypical evening news watchers (60 years old, retired -- dual residents of NJ and FL), we are almost ready to give it up, due to the disgusting medical ads(which we watch over dinner-ugh!) We keep the remote nearby to mute the commercials. Good news tonight that commercials were limited--still gross, but limited.

I enjoyed seeing Brian Williams away from his "anchorman" mode. I like him that much more for displaying a less serious side.

However, I think the writing for this particular SNL episode was rather weak. Most of the skits simply weren't that funny. (though opening, with Barack was very good)

Kudos to Brian for having the guts to do SNL. My favorite SNL has always been the ones where normally "straight" newsreaders or newsmakers come on and poke a little fun at themselves. I always respect them more for taking the risk.
PLEASE can we see the cut skits as extras on the NBC web site? The show ended up being a little lighter on Williams content than I had hoped.
I was really looking forward to some reference to him (or his presence, even better) on Weekend Update.

I couldn't wait to see Brian on SNL! I watch him everyday on NN. In my opinion, no other nighttime news compares. I also watch Today, and have seen him do NN teasers and also some appearances. There have been glimpses of his funnier, lighter side before. I don't know why people are so shocked that he has that side as well. Don't buy into the 1-dimensional newsman stereotype. That's so not him! Brian is the right man for the NN job, no question. Going on SNL was great, no harm done - or am I missing something?!? Why are we even questioning that? I seem to be the only respondent who took exception to Brian Williams appearing on SNL a few days after moderating a debate that saw an all out attack from those seeking the presidency on the front runner. It was gang tackling at its worst and it was set up by the types of questions and format the moderators posed. In defense of Williams and Russert, they were under no obligation to control the blood letting that ensued. Mr Williams should not have appeared on SNL 3 days later with Obama as the lead skit. Best episode of the season so far! Brian was brilliant- and HOT!!! I always suspected there was a sense of humor lurking beneath those fine fitting suits.

I felt that Mr. Williams absolutely damaged his credibility with his appearance on SNL. If I needed any further proof (which I didn't), I was watching the Today show the next morning and the coverage of the turmoil in Pakistan. The anchor said that Andrea Mitchell had reached the former Prime Minister of Pakistan via phone, late Saturday night. I immediatley said, "While Brian Williams was fooling around on SNL."
Mr. Williams - You love to play the news anchor with the posing and the outfits. It's about time you actually did the job. I think you are quite capable. You are just more interested in being a celebrity now. The country needs you to do your job, now more than ever. I loved Brian Williams on SNL. I watch it every week and am usually disappointed a half hour into it. Not last week! I actually laughed out loud! Something rare off TV these days. Believe it or not, I changed my nightly news station the following Monday to NBC.
My favorite skit was the Publishers/Digest Million Dollar prize where he was so unimpressed - except when the free Pizza came. Good Job! And Good Job on the Cleveland Newscast on Monday 11/12 direct from Cleveland, Ohio.

His accent in his first sketch had me laughing so hard I nearly cried and mad props for keeping a straight face with Maya Rudolph and Amy Pohler they are the funniest ladies I've seen since Gilda. I greatly enjoyed the job you did hosting SNL. It did much to make you more real, "humanize" you perhaps. Chet Huntley, John Chancellor, and Tom Brokaw all share(d) their real persona with the public in a way that David Brinkley and Walter Cronkite never could.

A thought on the opening of Nightly News, you deliver the headlines and then say "...begins now!" It began with the headlines. Why not say at that point, "...is on the air!"?

I hope at some point this message is passed along to Mr. Williams because I'm not sure where else to post it. As a child I was raised on NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. As an adult, it was a very sad day indeed when Mr. Brokaw stepped down because I had grown to think of him like family. But trusting him to pass his anchor chair to a capable and likable individual, I continued to watch. As a graduate student my schedule does not always allow me the time to make it home for the news, but when I have had the opportunity, I have watched, and listened, and been repeatedly impressed. When I found out Mr. Williams would be on SNL I absolutely had to be home in time to catch it. Brian, you did not disappoint and in fact I have more respect for you now than ever. Good for you for poking fun at yourself. Thank you for allowing your viewers to see another side of you. You did all that you could do with the script (because lets be honest, SNL is not as great as it used to be), but anything related to you as a newsman made me laugh until I had tears in my eyes. I enjoyed your performance immensely. My boyfriend, who lovingly teases me for watching the news with you, even watched a few skits and was entertained (and he is not easily impressed and actually hates SNL). I just watched the episode, which I recorded. I think Brian Williams did a fine job. He was funny and wasn't stiff.

I didn't notice him blantantly reading the cue cards, but even if he did, who cares? He's not an actor, and there have been numerous actors who were obviously reading...Lindsay Lohan and Heather Locklear come instantly to mind.

I just watch your show with Gen. Petraeus, and just think he is such a lie. If he really understood how it is to be soilder he would order our troops out of Iraq.

I hardly miss your show. Today you reported about gas prices from arround the world. I dont know about other places but European Countries like Netherlands where you said the price of gas is over $9/Gal. at the moment, and at todays exchange rate it is appoxemately little over 6EU/Gal.
If I'm not mistaken about three years ago it was over 5EU/Gal. and the exchange rate at that time was almost one to one. And our prices here in the US was under $2.
What I'm getting at is, everybody pays the same price for a barrel of oil or amI wrong? Why than has our gas prices almost doubled while Europ's has increased about 20-25%.
Wouldn't that be something to look into and report about?
Sorry, English is not my first language. I hope I was able to make my point clear.

I enjoy watching Mr. Williams and the NBC Nightly News each evening but I cannt for the life of me understand why a journalist of his magnitude would stoop so low as to host SNL. SNL is a piece of garbage. It hasn't been funny in decades. The last time I tried to watch it, I turned it off, got a box of Tide and took a long hot bath.

By the way, when Conan takes over the Tonight showthat will be when I stop watching it. Conan isn't funny, he's just plain goofy and silly. I can't imagine a grown man acting as stupid as he does even for the big bucks.

I saw a re-run of the SNL show last night - how wonderful! Not only can Brian give the news professionally, and with heart, but he is really funny with great comedic timing! I love watching the nightly news, probably more than any show. Brian reminds me of Peter Jennings. He has the handsome good looks, is very classy when giving the news, and he is able to distance himself enough to report, but still retain that human aspect too. I just love watching you!

I just saw the SNL episode with Brian Williams. I didn't realize it was a repeat. But nevertheless, Mr. Williams, you were awesome. I've thoroughly enjoyed that performance. It was an excellent portrayal of all things that we do not normally associate with you. Great job!!!!

Brian Williams and Jon Stewart on the Daily Show have a tremendous rapport with each other and are funny as can be together. I hope that they do more joint appearances in some format.

I found the newscast by Brian Williams to be totally unfair and disgusting. Whether the Alaska Govenor's airplane was sold on Ebay or by another company was not news, or important. Equally, and rejecting the money, previously given to Alaska, was her decision.
I hear nothing, the sound is deafening, about some real issues like Obama's links to Tony Resko, his relationship with the terrorist, William Ayers and the Iraqi Billionaire. No these are ignored for your biased reporting. The NBC producer, and Brian Williams, have no morals about fairness. No wonder NBC has become a pathetic network in recent years.

Just watched your Letterman performance. While you're not nearly as obvious as the MSNBC doublemint twins, your true feelings show just as much as "certifiably independent" dave's. Being sarcastic and condescending under the guise of impartiality isn't fooling everyone.

Forget SNL. It is a comedy show. How can Brian Williams call himself a serious, non-partisan newsperson after his participation on The Late Show with David Letterman last week. To "use Sarah Palin like a pinata" with Letterman destroys Williams' credibility. He should be ashamed.

I'm only posting here because it's near impossible to leave comments on the nightly news section. Mr. Williams, shame on you for that spot tonight (10/8) about the debate. Shame on you for implying Senator McCain was patronizing to Oliver from the audience. You must not have watched the debate yourself. If you did, you would have known what Senator McCain was suggesting that because these organizations are supposed to be doing there jobs, and well, we would not likely even know about them. Especially if we are not home owners. Unbelieveable. If your network wants not to be accused of one-sided coverage or basically campaigning yourselves for Obama, why would you so obviously spin an extremely innocent comment like that in the middle of his remarks and turn it against him. Absolutely shameful. In fact, you should actually go on the news tomorrow night, rerun your remarks from tonight and issue an apology for clearly misrepresenting Senator McCain. Again, absolutely shameful. Knowing you do that, your entire network, how do you sleep at night. So biased and unfair. It's unfortunate. My cable is getting hooked up on Friday. I can't wait because my only news will come from FOX News, where they know what fair and balanced and actually helpful news looks like. I'd like you to consider going back on the air and apologize to Senator McCain and the rest of your viewers for implying he was patronizing Oliver. Thank you, So disappointed.

Hey Brian I thought it was really neat being able to see you in a different light as a comic. It was very pleasing...will you ever do it again & what do you think of the Martin Lawrence edition of the show?! As far as the new code names...I think that mine will be Rebel Yell & they forgot about the dogs code name. It should be Romance a.k.a. Puppy Love! Get @ me & holla!
