Private First Class Jack H. Lucas was a truly dedicated Marine and so very young to be in battle. I admire his bravey at landing on that beach and facing such a fierce battle against the Japanese. I am glad he survived those serious injuries and pulled through the surgeries. To be the youngest recipient of the Medal of Honor and certainly the only ninth grader is extremely impressive. It is great he went back to school and earned his college degree. What a great soldier and American! We salute him proudly!

I have read a book about Jack Lucas and think he did a good job serving his nation. He is very brave to want to join the military at 13 YEARS OLD! I really like the story of him being a stoaway on a military sumberine. It was so inspiring. Jack...you made your country proud. I salut you with the most greatfull saluts ever.

Thanks to everyone that has commented in a positive and honorable way. This is a very sad and hard time for my family. My siblings and I are so far away and haven't been able to see him. My Brother is going into surgery on Monday which isn't making things any easier and we really appreciate people who show their support and true respect to my Grandfather. I'm honored to be able to call him that. I truly am. My Grandfather is back at Forrest General and he's not doing very well today. I think he's going to fight until the very end. I don't think I could expect anything less from my Grandfather.

My name is SGT Ghoston, Im a U.S. Marine. I had the priveledge of listening to Captain Lucas speak just a few weeks ago at Hillcrest High school in Tuscaloosa, Al. Im a Marine Recruiter in Alabama and have 3 young men from that area dedicated to earn the title of a MARINE that were also present. One is currently attending recruit training at Paris Island right now. I had the opportunity to take several photos with Captain Lucas on that day. Once Mr. Lucas had those photos sent back to me, I knew they were very special photographs. But it wasnt until today that i recieved a phone call at my Marine office from a very close friend of his alerting me of his present condition and me coming home and finding everything on the internet that i could with the words "Jack Lucas" that i realized how special those photos would be to me from that day. He is the most outstanding Marine that i have ever shaken the hand of!! Before i began typing this, i had to wipe the tears from my face. Not just from his current physical condition alone, but a great deal from the pride we as MARINES feel. Im honored to have had what it took to earn the title of a Marine and stand along side Mr. Lucas as Marine Brothers. There is a certain bond between fellow Marines regardless of age, race, or orgin that cannot be fully explained in just a few simple words. Our method of communicating as human beings isn't complex enough to verbally communicate the pride that Marines like Mr. Jack Lucas causes Marines like myself to feel. Only Marines truely understand. He is more than a Marine Legend, im greatful to be part of this ELITE BROTHERHOOD know as the USMC. My prayers go out to Mr. Lucas and his family and God Bless!!

I only wish that the citizens of today (moms, dads and children) could appreciate and emulate the desire to contribute in a meaningful way as Jack and the current service men and women exhibit(ed). We met Mr. Lucas at the Ohio Valley Military Society in Louisville, Kentucky. My son, Blake, 11 years old, lives and breathes Marine. Head to toe in cami green, he walked up to Mr. Lucas who promptly gave Blake the ole OOH-RAH with as much Moxy as any young Marine could! My son gave it right back, respectfully of course, and Mr. Lucas said "well, he just gave it right back to me!" The long line was forming behind us, but Mr. Lucas continued talking with my son and encouraging him to seek his dreams no matter what. We bought Indestructible and read it in a day, we had just met a living legend! When I told my son he was in the hospital, all he wanted was to rush to his side. What an awe inspiring man he still is, because he will continue to live in the hearts of young men and women who are honored to serve their country with pride and courage! Thank you Jack Lucas, a true American Hero you are!! God Bless you and keep you in His fold. We love you and we thank you.

I just finished the book and I thoght it a amazing story. It ought to be made in a movie. However, I do think he was a fool in the way he went about his Marine career. If every one acted in disregard of military regulations where would we be today. Military disapline and obeying orders is the only way to win a war. I think he was a very brave fool. I don't admire the way he lived his life though.

I met this wonderful man several years back who had this great spirit and a smile that won your heart over immediately. You just knew that you were in the presence of a very special man. I was not surprised to learn the he had been awarded the MEDAL OF HONOR nor when I learned what for. He had that aura about him. We visited infrequently but each time I came out having more and more respect and honor for him. Each time we would ride into Jackson MS my first task was always to look up Jack who would come up to visit with all the RUN FOR THE WALL riders on their way to Washington DC for Memorial Day.

This year I brought my wife so she could meet Jack. We knew that he was gravely Ill but with hope and prayers in our heart we knew that if Jack could be there he would be. Upon arrival we found that Jack was in the Hospital but our hosts had arranged a conference call with Jack. As critically ill as Jack was he lifted all our spirits and we felt his spirit.

We will miss you my friend. I'll be there Sunday evening if at all possible.

Jack was the embodiment of the WARRIOR SPIRIT!

Jacklyn H. Lucas, a friend and fellow day student at what is now High Point University, (College then) who I grew to know and appreciate as a fellow classmate as well as knowing him as a Medal of Honor Winner. We shared a ride to and from school for a year, me as a Freshman and Jack as a Senior. I learned a lot!!! We became Fraternity brothers and just enjoyed knowing each other. He was a fun guy, and smart as a whip, a word for really smart down south. i had the honor of meeting and getting to know this wonderful man that is still alive but thrown away in a Sentara nursing home in Barco,NC. his military life should be honored. he is a quiet man with eyes that dance with the chance of playing cards. he is a hero that has been forgotten and left alone. i wish you could honor him and just talk to him about his war memories good and bad. some of it is hard for him to talk about. i'm sure you understand that. his name is James Kirkland. A good man, A good soulder, A wonderful story just knowing him. Please take the time to get to know him also.

My father was my best friend and will be missed so dearly.I think about him all the time and go by his grave site and just sit there and think of what a wonderful Dad he was to me.My Dad was one of a kind and always will be.My Dad made me happy and he made me cry and if i didnt do something right he made me do it over.My DAD JACK H LUCAS IS MY HERO.I thank all of our military men and women for what they have done for our country and also all of you that have him in there prayers.He will be missed.I love you DAD,your son....

I am sorry to just now hear about the death of John Lucas. I just this day did finish his book. I must say it was a remarable read! I lived across the road from Jack. When I was younger I visited him more, but I regret not spending more time with him. I will remember him for the rest of my life. He was such a great man and friend.

Your Dad is one of the reasons I volunteer at the V.A. hospital in Salisbury. As the sign at the entrance reads "Here is where you see Freedom isn't free". God bless all the men and women including my Dad (88 and a WWII veteran as well) and our son Stewart (deploying Sunday in the Air Force for two months)for being there, so that the rest of us may have the life and opportunities so easily taken for granted. May your Dad rest in peace and may you and all of your family find comfort in the honor and love his life exemplified.

My husband and I attended Fleet Week in New York City today 05-23-09; the ship of interest was the USS Iwo Jima. While up on the fight deck, I noticed that it was called the "Jack Lucas Airfield". I asked a young man stationed at one of the helicopters, "who was Jack Lucas?" He said "I am a Marine and only stationed (detailed) here for Fleet Week, I don't know and you will have to ask the Navy". I then asked two Navy personnel and they also didn't know; one of whom was a Chief Petty Officer (although he did admit that he thought he knew but wasn't sure). We then descended one level to the helicopter repair area, and while my husband was looking at something else, I again asked a Naval person, who was Jack Lucas(?), and he knew - that he was the youngest medal of honor due to his heroics with the grenades and a little of his history - being so young, the forging of the signatures, and his actually going back to school to finish his education, and his recent passing away. I am sorry that I did not get that young man's name. And, hearing about his service and history, we want to pay our respects to this fine gentlemen and the service that he provided to this country. We express our sincere condolences to his family.

jack was an inspiring person we recently did a hero paper at my school i did mine about him ive read his book ,jack along with the many of my family members have inspired me to join the marine corps. we lost a great hero but heavens a safer place now that hes 1 of the marines guarding it
