Last year, for 110 straight days, we featured a different living recipient of the Medal of Honor. These are the men who have received their nation's highest military honor. We are re-posting this entry of Jack Lucas, who died today in Hattiesburg,

Medal of Honor: Jack H. Lucas was a truly dedicated Marine and so very young to be in battle. I admire his bravey at landing on that beach and facing such a fierce battle against the Japanese. I am glad he survived those serious injuries and pulled through the surgeries. To be the youngest recipient of the Medal of Honor and certainly the only ninth grader is extremely impressive. It is great he went back to school and earned his college degree. What a great soldier and American! We salute him proudly!

Medal of Honor: Jack H. It ought to be made in a movie. However, I do think he was a fool in the way he went about his Marine career. If every one acted in disregard of military regulations where would we be today. Semper Fi, Jack. It is now your time to rest as another generation is doing their duty fighting tyranny, evil and appresion once again and it is thanks to you and the other Marines who came before these young Marines that they are so well trained and would do anything for their fellow Marine like Jack did on Iwo Jima, diving on those grenades without thinking so that other Marines would live, because of his quick thinking to make it home to their families and be able to grow old, because of what you did over 60-years ago on that small volcanic hell. Your family has truly something to be proud of for and not just, because you were awarded the Medal of Honor, but because you were a Marine and that you so loved this country and wanted to protect her that you sacrificied your childhood to do just that. Marines every where to include this old crippled Marine, salute you and God Bless you for all you did to help ensure we are able to keep the freedoms we have so dear.

Semper Fi Marine.

Medal of Honor: Jack H. While up on the fight deck, I noticed that it was called the "Jack Lucas Airfield". I asked a young man stationed at one of the helicopters, "who was Jack Lucas?" He said "I am a Marine and only stationed (detailed) here for Fleet Week, I don't know and you will have to ask the Navy". I then asked two Navy personnel and they also didn't know; one of whom was a Chief Petty Officer (although he did admit that he thought he knew but wasn't sure). We then descended one level to the helicopter repair area, and while my husband was looking at something else, I again asked a Naval person, who was Jack Lucas(?), and he knew - that he was the youngest medal of honor due to his heroics with the grenades and a little of his history - being so young, the forging of the signatures, and his actually going back to school to finish his education, and his recent passing away. I am sorry that I did not get that young man's name. And, hearing about his service and history, we want to pay our respects to this fine gentlemen and the service that he provided to this country. We express our sincere condolences to his family.

Medal of Honor: Jack H.
