It seems sad that so many Americans become so desperate, while our government could care less about us. The real robbers are in the government. Nobody can fleece us like they can, by comparison, bank robbers are inconsequencial.

Bravo --- I wholeheartedly agree with you, Velma. The Government is the real organized crime organization here… if the Government would truly care about and help its citizens the way it is supposed to (and can afford to), all of these so-called "problems" would be drastically reduced. Same with "homeland security" --- Bush & Co. cause their own problems; if they would stop treating everyone else like dirt, maybe the oppressed people wouldn't feel like lashing out.

I work as a teller in our local bank and everyday I wonder if this is the day that we're going to be hit. I really check out everyone waiting in line and try to be aware of their appearance. The only good thing is that we are a small town bank and most of our customers are regulars so anyone new or different really stand out.

Obviously the money was more important to the bank than its employees, if security personell were instructed to engage armed robbers with gunfire.

"Money for drugs" -- Mark Potter, do you actually believe what you write, or do you just write for the money? Bank robbers have been edified as heroic figures since long before Jesse James and people steal because they want money. Money for pleasure, money for possessions, and money for social status. We are a materialistic culture and that's how the system works. If people didn't crave that green paper, how would we ever get them to slave away in our offices and factories, or at a computer writing innane articles for public consumption?

Maybe the best solution to these problems is for the government to impose taxes on all consumer goods, so demand will me lower. With the money collected from the taxes the government could create social programs to prevent people from doing crimes. Maybe the governemtn should create work-fare which would help the economy and there would be less need for people to steal money.

I don't believe I have a right to complain about government robbing us, if I don't at least take the time to write to The Pres. my governor and congresspersons to express my opinions. Our society has gone into the dumper and it is easy to blame someone else. Bank Robbers? they steal for money, only money. Most are likely misfits. Arming tellers would be catastrophic!!! It would help if our schools had teachers who taught responsibility and self respect and the importance of being a good citizen. I am careful, every time I go to bank, get out/in my auto, walking on street. If you don't look out for yourself, who will?

You bleeding heart liberals live in fantasy land. These bank robbers are not supporting families. They say this BS so they can get sympathy from a jury in order to get a lighter sentence. If the employees were allowed to defend themselves instead of being "good victims" maybe these "breadwinners" would think twice about robbing a bank. Also,it is not the government's job to provide for your needs.

They never tell the actual amounts of money stolen in these robberies. More often its actually not very much, since the crooks usually only get the cash in the drawers.

Then, there's the cameras, dye-bombs, silent alarms all working against them.

If they would just report the low amounts being taken and the high chance and penalties for getting caught, then maybe would-be criminals would reconsider the risks for the less than great rewards.

It would also help to minimize the media coverage for these crimes until they catch the thief. Make sure it's known that they're not getting away with anything.

It's not the movies where a crew of crooks is set for life after stealing a vault full of cash and slipping away. Most bank robbers only get a few thousand dollars at most, some not even a thousand.

As a former armored car driver my advice when you find yourself in a bank that is being hit by lunitics.
Hit the floor don't say a word do as your told. Pray the poorly trained and paid security officer doesn't decide to be a hero and get everyone killed. Lastly bank on line as much as possible.

Come on. Drugs as a motivator for bank robbery? Try this instead: "drug addiction" is America's Number One EXCUSE for just about anything.

With the likes of Paris and Nicole and Tom Sizemore and the Baldwin Brother and Congressman Foley all getting away with numerous crimes on the promise to go into rehab, is it really any wonder that ANYONE captured in the commission of a crime instantly throws the "drug addict card?"

Not so long ago, it was "broken home, mommy didn't spend enough time with me." Now it's addiction. And not just drug addiction. These days the excuses run to "addiction" to just about anything you care to name. Neglectful parents who allow their children to starve now claim "internet addiction." A President of the United States blamed his unfaithfulness to his marriage to "sex addiction." Thousands of morbidly obese people attribute their lardy figures to "eating disorders" i.e. "food addiction."

I eagerly await the day some indicted individual claims he was driven to crime by his addiction to air...or tap water.

John Dillinger said it best way back in the Thirties when a reported asked him, "John, why do you rob banks?" Dillinger's reply, "Because that's where the money is."

people rob banks because they are sick of the very system that banks support: enticing people and in various contexts requiring or forcing them to pile up a mountain of debt they cannot hope to reduce. then the very institution that has preyed on the public's weakness of over-borrowing is COMPLAINING that people come back and take it by force? Get real. How stupid and naiive. People will continue this tradition and it is overdue and deserved.

It's like offering college students unlimited credit cards to take to the local bars, coffee shops and department stores--Then being shocked that they aren't paying it back. DUH. You created it - now deal with it.

I'm sorry, but I must agree w/those who think the reason for the rise lies w/the government! Gas prices are over $3.00 per gallon, milk and other dairy products are at an all time high, the electric and gas companies are charging more. The rich just keep getting richer, and the middle class are following to poverty levels. This isn't for drugs...this is for survival!

After 21 years in the middle class I now find myself headed for the lower class, which unless you live under a rock the news tells of a new number of jobs lost to China, Japan, and Korea. More and more we are seeing the U.S. turning into a two class country, RICH and POOR. The CEO's, and top executives are not worried about the bottom falling out, they have already received thier GLUTINOUS pay and bonus. When people are not paying back their mortgages and credit cards the people that helped create the problem are the ones complaining, The people in China, Japan, and Korea are not buying the products they make. I hope to see the day the middle class takes back the AMERICAN DREAM and the government represents the ALL the PEOPLE not just the RICH.

Ah the anthem of the liberals. I have worked hard for what I have. I didn't steal it, cheat anybody for it, I earned it. Every youngster, from the time they are very young are told, be good and eat your vegtables and mommy and daddy will be happy with you. Then off to school where they are told to be good and study hard and get good grades so you can get into a good college. Where they are told to be good and study hard so you can graduate and get a good job. Where they are told to work hard to earn a good living and have a comfortable life. Then after they've worked hard and created a comfortable life for themselves, some bleeding heart liberal tells them because they have some money that they are the evil rich class. And they don't deserve what they've worked for and should feel guilty because somebody else that never worked a day in their life is having a tough time supporting themselves. All my life I did all the right things, now, all of the sudden I'm wrong. Where did I go wrong?

I am currently on disability and receive approximately $900 a month, most receive $600 a month. I am a previous worker who became injured working. I am trying to support a family of 4 on that amount of money. To put things in perspective, lets just say my electric bill alone is $400 per month. I own my own home, which I earned through hard work, rent in my area runs from $800 to $1200 a month. I do not qualify for any government assistance because I am told I receive to much money. People who have found themselves unemployed are treated like dirt and forced into programs that require them to take the first job they can find even if it is at McDonalds in order to receive benefits. As soon as they find a job, usually within the first week of employment at some low income job, all benefits are terminated. Believe me when I tell you from personal experience that I know for a fact crime is on the rise because people are desperate, and they are tired of being robbed by the government, wealthy corporations, and banks. Our society is set up to make the rich richer and prevent the poverty stricken from ever rising out of poverty. Who in their right mind feels it is justifiable to pay $300,000 in interest for a $30,000 loan. We are taxed before we ever see our paychecks, then we are taxed again whenever we make a purchase. We have to pay for permits whenever we want to try to build or start a buisness, we are even taxed on property we already own. If we don't pay we are threatened on a continuous basis that our property will be taken from us, and sometimes even thrown in to prison for tax evasion. Come on, wake up and begin to realize who the real robbers are. It isn't the kid or man who steals a few hundred dollars from a local party store or a bank. Give me a break people.
