I will miss him a lot, and it's going to take a few days for me to get by this shock. Eventually, though, we will all join "The Long Gray Line" and see each other again.

Wayne mentioned to me on several occasions how much he admired and respected you, Brian, and I suspect you also enjoyed a special relationship. Thanks, Brian, for your fair and balanced reporting about national security news, and your frequent trips to Iraq to share your time with our troops. I share your grief.
GEN. Many people will be sad today as they hear of his death. He was a great warrior and an outstanding American. My heartfelt sympathy goes to his family, many friends, and NBC.

GEN. He was a fellow "war orphan." His father died in World War II as did mine. As Founder of the American WWII Orphans Network I invited him to be with us on the Anniversary of the end of WWII at our AWON conference in 1995. To my surprise he came despite countless invitations elsewhere that day. He said, "There is nowhere else I would rather be today." Those of us who lost our Dad's in WWII share a common bond and I certainly felt it with Gen. Downing. He was one of the most wonderful people I have met in my life time. Despite being in charge of the Special Forces with the war in Bosnia going on, and being alert every minute to an emergency call, he acted as if he had nothing better to do than sit there with his fellow war orphans that day. He gave every person he met special attention. When I hugged him goodbye at the hotel in Seattle it was with tears in both our eyes. His wife is equally brave and wonderful. My heart goes out to her and the family. To lose him like this must be a terrible shock. You are in my prayers and those of all Wayne's "brother and sister" orphans of World War II.

GEN. WAYNE A. Although he carried the ranks, the brass and the various top titles through-out his career, he was still kind and humble person. He worked as a consultant for SAIC and I took care of all his wireless communications. He last emailed me on Friday and its a tragedy to lose a man of his stature. He served his country well and I am proud to have worked for him. God Bless, Gen. Downing.

GEN. WAYNE A. I had the honor to be one of his Rangers at Fort Lewis in the late 70's. The man would show up in the field in the middle of the night, in pouring rain, when we were out in the middle of nowhere and walk right up to you and call you by name and ask what you were doing. No one could ever figure out how he was able to do that for everyone in the Battalion (all 600+ of us!). But, he could pass the Army PT Test with 126 pushups, over a hundred situps, and a run of two miles in just over 13 minutes, and all this at 46 years of age! And he detested mediocrity more than blatant incompetence. Like most of us, he lived to be three times older than he ever ought to have been. The Rangers and 173rd Herd will forever bear something of his stamp. He gave his country sterling service that only a select few in our history have surpassed. We are poorer for the fact that he and Dick Potter weren't a few stars higher when we did Desert Storm.

GEN. WAYNE A. I was serving with the 75th Ranger Regt under COL David Grange Jr.for his final jump with the Regiment. I had the honor to be a primary jumpmaster on the aircraft and then LTG Downing was on their as well. We didn't jump because of high winds , but the attitude and comments of GEN Downing as well as COL Grange to the pilots" was that we will jump or the a/c will fly until it run out of fuel-whatever come first. That was the way he lead the forces he commanded-straight forwarded and with that a "love for Soldiers" May God bless him and the wonderful wife, childrens, relatives and friends that he loved. Their names were Lee E. Garcia (South Pacific), John E. Garcia (Tunisia), Joe B. Garcia (Europe), Lupe J.Garcia (Normandy, Belgium and Rhineland), Ernest A.Garcia (England, France, Belgium and Germany) and Dan M. Garcia (Tunisia, Algiers and Italy). They have all past on and I never met none of my uncles or grandmother. My grandmother Garcia-Topping, who's medallion necklace that I have been wearing since fourth grade except when I wrestled or back operation etc., had six star's in her front window in Aguilar, Colorado during World War II... told to me by my father Manuel Garduno (Korean war) AKA Manuel Garcia (his school days). Each one of them was spread out in World War II and all came back from World War II alive... Many men/women have died and survived in many different wars, but there isn't a day that doesn't go bye, without thinking of them and others who protect this nation for freedom, democracy and the good living that each of us knows about? The point is NBC News, I just don't want to be only remembered today but also tomorrow. I promised my uncles and grandmother, who I never met that I would tell others not only by word of mouth but by writing their miraculous World War II story to others. We all know about the Sullivan Brother's of World War II...What about the Garcia Brother's of World War II.
The Garcia Brothers and Grandma Garcia-Topping would have made a hell of a documentary. The Garcia's have past on but will always be remembered.....Thanks Grandma for Sacrificing, Uncles and Father for Defending our America.

Your viewer,

Marcus Garduno September 17, 2007
MarcusGarduno2003@yahoo.com
(719-250-3977)

P.S. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country."
I asked for a few Americans. I served as a staff officer under General Downing (Colonel at the time) from 1982-84 during his Armored Brigade Command in Bamberg, Germany. The nature of my duties required me to brief him on regular occassions and the knowledge I gained was immeasurable. I still have a personal note from him acknowledging my birthday which I treasure deeply. Simply stated...he was indeed a Soldiers Soldier!

GEN. WAYNE A. I learned of this doing research for a scholarship presentation for Sargent Jeffery Palmer who served under General Downing. It is my understanding that Sgt Palmer died serving his country under General Downing's leadership. General Downing presented this scholarship personally a number of years ago to honor Sgt Palmer. I had the privilege to share dinner with him at that time. I have never met a more impressive man. He invited us back to his hotel after the presentation to share conversation. That evening remains one of the most memorable and special nights of my life. I belatedly offer my condolences to those who knew him better. Our country has lost a great man and leader. I am honored to present an award in memory of one of his men. May God rest his soul. Amen

GEN. WAYNE A. He was a great guy and its a real loss to have him depart so early. I'm sure he is giving some good tactical advice to the big Ranger in the sky. See you later Gen. Downing.
