Thank you for taking the time to share your personal reflections of Lady Bird Johnson. Your obituary which ran at the top of Nightly News last night was equally eloquent and emotional. It is so important that when this country suffers a loss like that of Mrs. Johnson that we take time to look back and reflect, for it is out of this reflection that we learn so much about ourselves. After reading your blog and watching your report our country should look inward; we will see what makes us, truly, Americans.
Deepest condolences to the Johnson family and to its friends, including yourself

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. As a child i remember the visit of LBJ to our country in the late 1960s during the tumult of the vietnam war years. I think he was the first u.s. president to visit our shores and he had a great load on his shoulders in the post kennedy era of u.s. politics. As his wife i am sure Lady Bird supported him in all this work. Yours colin.

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

Brian, Thank you for a beautiful rememberance of a grand lady and her dynamic husband. LBJ--egoist that he was--might have resented that you didn't devote more attention to him, even in his wife's obituary; but he would be greatly pleased with your respect and affection. Here in the Hill Country, people still feel fifty different ways about Lyndon, but no one ever felt anything but love for Ladybird.

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

What a wonderful and beautiful story. I remember all the hurt, tears and pain as a young boy from the JFK loss that LBJ's presence somehow soothed. Lady Bird was all things graceful, especially to us Texans and particularly after the Whitehouse years. Most of us appreciate her especially as we pass the spring burst of wildflowers along the Texas highways that us Native Texans see every year. Once at an event long ago in the heart of Texas, I thought I made eye contact with LBJ in a very crowded venue. I remember feeling like God was looking down at me. I looked away. Strange. LBJ was as tall as Texas and Lady Bird was its beauty and grace.

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

I am a Texan and I grew up knowing who Lady Bird was. I am so sad that the grand lady is gone. She was responsible for the wild flowers growing along the highways. She will be missed. My condolences to her family.

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

What a beautiful story about a wonderful woman. My husband and I have since told my daughter of the wonderful contributions Lady Bird made to our great state and what an honor it was for her to have met and spent time with Lady Bird, but to her, for now, the Grand Dame was just T's great-grandma.

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

Lady Bird was, and will remain, the best of Texas. Your article does justice to her graciousness. Thank you.

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

K. The cabinet containing three television sets was its most memorable feature. As I was looking around that room, I heard a very distinctive voice behind me. As I turned around and returned to the elevator lobby, there was Lady Bird Johnson chatting with someone. I consider it an honor to have been in her presence for that brief time.

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

Thank you Brian for that lovely tribute to Lady Bird Johnson. At the funeral Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, a small, stooped lady using a cane, discreetly entered St. Patrick's Cathedral. She sat alone at the back of that great house of worship, quietly saying goodbye to a friend whom she shared a unique bond. That private, gracious farewell seems so fitting of Lady Bird Johnson. Tomorrow, I shall go to a park here in Denver and sit silently in front of some wild flowers. I'll contemplate a great American who taught us to contemplate and cultivate the beauty around us.

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

Your heartfelt words are precious.
You took me back to my childhood as I was 9 when
President Johnson took office that day on my Black and white TV screen. Texas has seen many such ladies that have been our strong Steel Magnolias; yet, Lady Bird, while leading her husband into the height of politics in turbulent times has shown the world the character and example of one of our remarkable Texas ladies. I find it appropriate and timely that my one year old grand-daughter's middle name of Taylor is Lady Bird's maiden name. I am proud to say that Kristin Taylor is a sixth generation Texan and Lady Bird Johnson has provided a grand example for our present and future Texas ladies. I attended East Texas Baptist College in Marshall, which is down the road from the Karnack family home of Lady Bird. I remember in 1967, as a college freshman, how proud I was when I drove past the pretty white, two-story house which stood stately on the humble hill for all to enjoy. Many friends were in the terrible Viet Nam war, yet seeing this homesite somehow gave a reassurance that a motherly presence was also working for all in our nation. God bless the family in this time of loss. What a loving and generous family that has opened their hearts to include the people of all fifty states!

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

Thanks so much for this lovely tribute to Mrs. Johnson. She sure was a remarkable lady and even though I live in Canada I was in awe of her. She will be missed.

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

Mr. Williams I truly enjoyed your piece about Lady Bird. Many people know of her grace and kindness. But many underestimated her, thinking that she was a quite obediant wife who was to be seen and not heard. You alluded to that in your article, about hearing her voice on many of the recorded conversations. L.B.J. was a heroic character, flawed, but heroic non the less. Lady Bird new this and stood strong and firm beside him. Not behind ,but beside him. She grew up in a very small town(Kildare,Tx.) daughter of an influential dry goods store owner. She never forgot where she came from, but was as at home in the White House or any small town diner. She will be missed and thank you so much for helping us to remember.
LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

GREAT JOB AS ALWAYS,,

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

Beautiful Lady, Beautiful words.

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

What a touching tribute piece this is. I also remember you as a substitute for Tom Brokaw, and I thought of you as a thoughtful, interesting, and articulate reporter. When it was announced that you were to assume the duties of the NBC Evening News anchor, I thought that that was a good move on the part of NBC. Soon after the announcement I saw you on the Jay Leno Show, and my impressions of you were confirmed. In addition to the aforementioned qualities we, the viewers had the opportunity to see a witty and humorous man. Unfortunately, we don't have the chance to see you in that light often enough. I thank you for your thoughts on Mrs Johnson. Like you I appreciate all that she accomplished for our country. Ifeel that during their time of service in the spotlight neither President Johnson or Lady Bird got the credit they truly deserved. I hope history will be kinder to them. And I hope to see perhaps more of the humorous and human side of you.

LADY BIRD JOHNSON: MOURNING A FORMIDABLE WOMAN

Mr. Williams, as usual, did a magnificent job on the tribute to Lady Bird Johnson. I looked at Mrs. Kennedys face so filled with loss and saddness and then at Lady Bird Johnsons and the two faces were one and the same. I wondered what Lady Bird was thinking right at this moment. Wondering if she was thinking, "how could I carry this large country after such a great loss. How will I help them get past this day." Lady Bird did lift up our country and made many parts of it beautiful with her flowers, her grace and her compassion. I would have loved to meet her, but I will remember her in each flower seed that was scattered along the road or planted in so many places to add more beauty to a nation already so beautiful. San Antonio, TX

As a little girl, I remember LBJ's larger than life figure, and the softness that Lady Bird cast over him. Her grace and beauty are a great loss to her Texas. I especially loved that beautiful soft, sweet, graceful Texas drawl in which she spoke, now almost vanished among us. With her passing, so did an era that will be irretrievable, sorely missed.
