U.S. officials tell NBC News the Pentagon and military are preparing to release as many as 2,000 photos from more than 400 separate cases involving alleged prisoner abuse at U.S. military

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

The Aclu is simply horrible. I guess all that money they get from Soros to do his work on destroying our nation is put to good use. Next they will be filing law suits on behalf of the Terrorists and our tax dollars can go to pay them for killing innocent people.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

Roger Baldwin was a co-founder of the ACLU in 1920. Here is one of his famous quotes: "I am for Socialism, disarmament and ultimately, for the abolishing of the State itself ... I seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class and sole control of those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal." This is lock, stock and barrel with the Obama administration, so it's no surprise that these kooks are getting off the anti-Christian bandwagon and turning their attention on something else that they think will destroy America. The Geneva Convention specifically restricts showing photos of prisoners of war... but who cares about the Geneva Convention unless it's furthering the left's agenda. The sad thing is that our tax dollars are paying for this socialist organization. It's funny that the stigma of Abu Ghraib is still a high focus of the media, but Americans getting their heads chopped off in videotapes is not. I'd much rather be waterboarded than have my head chopped off. Maybe libs feel differently. I'd gladly subject myself to waterboarding if the angry left would subject themselves to decapitation.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

How people get beheaded and pictures sent to their families. Just by the way, I lived in Tehran (Shah era) and found a generosity of spirit, behaviour and compassion among Muslim Shiite friends and colleagues so far removed from the horrors inflicted by todays' Bin Laden crusaders that I sincerely hope will someday be seen as the real face of Islam rather than the image of same that fills us with such disgust and revulsion each time we switch on the news or listen to a conversion about the latest atrocities.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

This can't be good for anyone.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

I did NOT vote for Obama, BUT I understand what is now going on in his administration. Torture is never justified since it is despicably inhuman and without any moral justification. To the Bush Administration, morality was fleeting and only used when convenient. Those who supported their causes where conventional morality was ignored should now be searching for their own forgiveness. The DOJ should pursue those who were involved in giving the orders to torture. It is necessary to pursue justice without malice or revenge. The rule of law needs to prevail to (hopefully) curb these acts from occurring in the future. The Bush Administration misused its responsibility and twisted the trust which was given to them from being elected into office. The US has been shamed by their acts of lawlessness. The rule of law needs to prevail.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

PLEASE RELEASE ALL OF ANY PRISONER OF WAR TORTURE PHOTOS---WE MUSH FINALLY KNOW ALL OF EVERY COUNTRY OF EVERY WAR FROM THE BEGINNING OF ALL DOCUMENTATION ---THEN WE CAN OBJECTIVELY DECIDE JUST WHO WE ALL REALLY ARE ---ADVANCED CIVILIZATION OR NOT BY WHOM AND WHERE AND WHEN AND THE REASONS ! It must be under force of the Obama camp, by way of the ACLU, a group that has become so low, and unrespected in this country. I hear, or read this garbage almost every day now, and it makes me sick, and very afraid as to what is going on in my country. These people our are enemy. They kill, and torture our people, and have no value of human life, or the rule of war. Why aren't there photo's of the abuse they submit their prisoners to being published. I have seen the video of them cutting the throat of a soldier, and sawing through his neck until they cut his head off while he groans, and kicks until the dead was done. Lets publish that, Ok. They are animals, and deserve no respect, or rights, and the ACLU should be ashamed to lead the public into thinking any different, and the Government, and Obama should be ashamed for letting this happen. I am an American, and proud of it. I, unlike what Mrs. Obama said, have alway's been proud of my country up until this election.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

My question about the prisoners who were supposed to have been "abused" is, Are they alive now?, Are they maimed now? To date the intelligence community has done a fair job of stopping another 9/11 type of attack, and to be honest I don’t care how they got the information, I’m just damn glad they did.

I must also acknowledge the fact that the young soldiers that may have acted outside the permissible range of tactics were under tremendous pressure, to get any and all information. These young men and women were doing what they could to protect American lives. Dailey they have to read about attacks that injure or kill other young American soldiers and wonder if there was some thread of information they might have obtained.

Let us not forget that this is a media generation of young people, we feed them a constant diet of good guys doing questionable things for the good of humanity. The most current of which might be the character “ Jack Bauer “ on the top rated show “24”, this is a man that will do what ever it takes to get the job done, and Americans love it. If ripping the fingernails out of 100 terrorists saves the life of even 1 liberal American I'm for it!!! As a Republican I was never much of a fan of Dick Cheney but he is absolutely correct. You cannot just release 1 side of a story unless you clearly have an ideology and an agenda! 5 current and former CIA chiefs including Paneta(Obama appointee) and Tenet(Clinton appointee) all agreed that releasing these documents was bad. I am a US Army soldier and a veteran of Iraq. Some things should transcend politics and this should be one of them! Pleae put differences aside and realize that the safety of soldiers over seas are effected by the release of these documents. And being afraid to use torture (I won't insult anyone and use the phrase "enhanced interrogation") to save the lives of Americans, even liberals, should be supported by any American who remembers 9/11!!!

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

why is N.B.C> doing all this trash. As you have already heard Law Makers and some Americans are in denial as the pictures wont make a differnce. We were once the leader of Human Rights, no longer. Soldiers often talked about how detainees were torture, but my shocker was we tortured kids. How sick is that. Just think the US sentenced Japanese soldiers to 15 years in jail for torturing US POW's now we are Torturing men/woman/children and justifying it. Many detainees have been tortured to death, at lease 7 were tortured so much their now medically insane. President Bush said many times the US doesn't torture he out right lied. Cheney was so proud of Torture he clearly admitted it on Fox News and said he's do it again. We waterboarded Mahommad 183 times and yes we got information as he confussed to killed Abe Lincoln and John Kennedy. The information Dick Cheney is claiming saved our lives was that information Bill Clinton annouced long before Bush took office. China had reported how two Chinese men were captured and tortured by the US which had nothing to do with al qeada but were question about information in China. Look the smoke and mirrors set up by the Bush Administration was clearly more then terrorist. What's sad is all this was happening right under the noses of the American people who had no one giving truthful information. No more Journalist like Edward R. Murrow who put the public interest first. Now everyone is acting like all this is new when it's really old news. Many countries are waiting to see how the US Justice System will work. Will we allow these crimes to go unpunished? Unlike Nixon who's crimes were against the American people, the Bush Administration's crimes are against citizens of other countries. Many countries are getting ready to try those in the Bush Administration. The young soldiers who were sentenced to jail for following orders from the top. I guess this is what Americans mean when they say We Support Our Troops. President Obama has reversed the Torture Policy for the USA. But he can't change the pass 8 years and in the future a new group of terrorist will use the Bush Torture Policy and maybe even on US Soldiers and American citizens. What will the US say then? As we were against Torture in the pass, for 8 years Torture was ok and now as of Jan. 20,2009 Torture is illegal. It's the 8 year Crime Torture spree that future terrorist will use to defend that actions. This is a clear example of by the US is ranked so low in education, morals, values and saddly even Religion. When we look in the mirror we look no different then the enemy.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

i dont see a problem, at least they were not beheading prisoners, or putting them on tv then executing them for America to see.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

You know Jim, that's mighty nice of Com. David Patraeus to order all 2,000 photos to be released to keep from 'dragging this issue out forever.'
I understand that there is a chain of command in the military and the environment of working in a prison is no picnic. My brother has been deployed five times in various places over the last eighteen yrs. It isn't easy for our family to have him retuning to Iraq for a second time. And it isn't easy for any soldier, so I'm not being naive.
As for me, I worked in a state prison for eleven yrs. I was a correctional officer. I wasn't there to punish anyone. But this was the mentality of some supervisors. They tried to drive their subordinates crazy, along with the inmates. One supervisor put a muslim inmate who wasn't causing any problems at all,in a holding cell and had him sing Christmas songs before the inmate was allowed to return to his cell.
This may sound funny to some. But I'm proving a point, power corrupts in that kind of envirnonment. And it's up to the higher ups to maintain civility.
It's sad at this point that the ACLU has to put things into proper perspctive, rather than our militaary leaders. Other countries have always looked at us to set an example. And we've always set high standards for ourselves, which as it should be.
I'm so glad that in this country we do have the ACLU and we are accountable for our actions.

Thanks to you also, and your great reporting.

Vicki

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

Thanks ACLU! Here comes another Abu Ghraib scandal, which means more ticked off Iraqi and Afghani citizens, which means more dead U.S. service members. From the descriptions of the photos listed above I agree that that actions in the photographs are wrong (and should never have been photographed in the first place), but why show them to the entire world? Generate more anger towards the U.S. perhaps? Releasing these photos will ultimately cause more harm than good. I hope they understand that.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

THIS IS WONDERFUL NEWS. NOW WE CAN BEGIN TO HEAL.

WE ALL ARE ACCOUNTABLE FOR OUR OWN ACTIONS. FREEDOM OF THE PRESS; WITH REAL FREEDOM, NOW THOSE ACTIONS CAN BE OBSERVED, JUDGED AND EVALUATED.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

Why is this issue so important? Now I respect those who feel the US should be able to kidnap and torture people and no one should be charged because in the US it's not really a crime to torture the enemy. As my daughter served in both Afghanistan and Iraq I have first hand knowledge of the facts. And yes she had to have a councilor because of the horror. Americans might feel it's no problem with Torture, but let's see what's said when the Bush Torture Policy is used by others aganist US Soldiers and American citizens. Most of the Law Makers and out spoken people never served in the US Military. Just be glad their not showing the photo's of the children Bush had tortured. The truth hurts but we have to deal with it now.

We have to remember Dick Cheney leaked CIA Covert Agent Plame's name as she was working in Iran. President Obama understands CIA agents were ordered to torture by the Bush Administration. We have right now several US soldiers in jail for following the orders of the Bush Administration who lied and said " We don't Torture".

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

We don't have a free pass to torture anybody just because we are the U.S. If anybody thinks that releasing these photos is a bad idea, It should not have been done in the first place. Our reputation was damaged by us when we stopped doing the right thing & allowed Bush to think for us. I love my country and sometimes the right thing to do isn't always the most comfortable/easy thing to do.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

ACLU = anti: christian, anti: liberty(freedom), anti:U.S... It is Mans' (animalistic trait) of getting information needed no matter what. Haven't you heard of the saying "the DEVIL made me do it". Well tell you what, every person on this earth has made this practice of "TORTURE" to be O.K. It does not have to do with politics, religion, whatever you want to name the reason. Until we use the practice of "LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER" then all the woes of the world will end. Tell me when was the last time that a man gave you a job that you had to torture him. When was the last time that you gave someone somthing to eat that he had to troture you. There are many samples that I could tell you that would take hours and days and months for me to tell you what not do do against other people, not just your enemy. I AM NOT TRYING TO BE RELIGIOUS AND JUST OR AN ANGEL. But the day that we wont experience TORTURE is when we show any man on earth that if we respect them, they will repect us. If we show some compasion he will do likewise. A man that gives torture will get turture in return. A man that hates will be hated. A man that lies will be lied to. But a man that gives LOVE will receive love in return. It begins with me, you, and all in this earth. That is your homework for today and the rest of your life. Take the first step and millions will follow on this journey to get rid of hate, torture, descrinination etc., etc., etc., make a diference leave your mark, me and you lets start. And "MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA" and the rest of the world or otherwise we will TORTURE ourselves to death. What benefit do the AMERICAN people get from releasing these photos? AMERICAN civil liberties union?? I've heard one comment saying "those actions can be observed judged and evaluated" ?? Who has a right to judge ? You ? I think not. Another woman on here listed herself as a military mom.. like that makes her somehow a subject matter expert or in anyway a credible source. It's people like this that all too often forget that the world we live in is a dangerous and scary place. Every freedom and right that you enjoy was bought at the barrel of a gun and paid for in blood. Whether you like it or not it is the way it is and the way it always will be. As long as human nature is what it is there will be men called upon to go out and do that which others have neither the stomach nor the courage to do. Until you've walked that road and faced those dangers made that sacrifice you are not in the position to judge, you are not an expert.
As far as human rights go, I am a US soldier and since 2002 I have spent over four years between Iraq and Afghanistan, I am as we speak on the ground in Iraq. In all my time here I have yet to have seen any Iraqi mistreated, I do not doubt that such things do occur from time to time, but the policies are very strict and punishment is severe for any mistreatment or abuse. We are not mindless drones under a cruel regime, we are an all volunteer proffessional Army and the soldiers on the ground here conduct themselves as such. It is reckless and it shows your own ignorance to make claims that insinuate that any of this is standard operating procedure or a common occurrence.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

Jim--too bad this story was not deemed important enough for the broadcast. I guess it was more important to show us the 12-year-old girl who threw a perfect game in little league or the story about Londoners who want to take things more slowly. Maybe if the Pentagon was preparing to release photos of skateboarding bulldogs or pink dolphins, Nightly News would consider it important enough to put on the air.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

Hey, war sucks. Deal. Sounds like "torture" committed by US personnel has been pretty mild compared to what has been done in the past to our people, and to people everywhere. Torture has really mellowed out a great deal, on our end, anyway. We've come a long way, baby. Folks should be content with that, eh? Realistically, too, isn't one American life saved by intelligence worth all of the damages to our enemies? Isn't that what war is about? Winning?

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

I applaud Gen Petraeus' decision to release all pictures of Gitmo infractions at once. He understands any other path could result in these photos being brought to light and used to creat further cover-up accusations. It's a "Let's come clean, beg understanding/forgiveness, and move on" maneuver. Short-term, this may make the US appear more vulnerable. Longer-term, it will help restore the world's trust in, and esteem for our values of morality and justice. This will, in the long run, make the world more secure, not less so.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

It is a sad day when Americans from the land of the free and home of the brave choose to defend the atrocities of torturers. These individuals are not heroes or patriots but rather the forces that must be fought in order to preserve the nation that our forefathers envisioned for us. Those who fail to understands this have more in common with the terrorists than our true patriots. These incidents perpetuated by Americans in uniform are no different than those committed by priests in robes upon their altar boys and wards. Abuse is not about intelligence gathering or defending our embattled shores but rather about predatorization of the helpless and powerless by the strong and disturbed. In addition, if an officer issued an order that we found extremely inappropriate or morally offensive and not related to direct combat we could refuse the order (and possibly suffer consequences). That we now have people in America defending torture defies one of the foundations that this country is built upon. The argument that these people are "terrorist" doesn't cut the mustard. When somebody is trying to kill you you not interested whether they're terrorists or some recognized country. When the communist Chinese used waterboarding in North Korea on our American soldiers they usually did it within hours after capturing them. For us to do it weeks or months later makes no sense -- as if the friends of the one being tortured are going to stay in the same place or do the same things after their comrade was captured? All the people blaming President Obama for the release of these papers should go back to school to learn to comprehend written passages. This article we are all responding to clearly states that the releases are the results of lawsuits by the ACLU and the pending entire 2000 photos will be released at the order of the Centcom, Commander David Patraeus. As President Obama has stated several times, no one is above the law, including himself! Is this not what democracy is all about? We should be happy that we have a leader who is not a dictator and who is leading by example.

U.S. military to release prisoner photos

I want to start off by saying that I am in the military and think the whole idea of torture is pretty stupid. I mean the Bush admin used loop holes to do what they did because they knew that it was wrong. People are saying that they are POW's ,but they are not POW's. Like Jackie said, President Bush was the one who supported this. And do not talk about how American's were tortured in the war. Just because these people may be the terrorists, does not mean they should be tortured in any way.
It doesn't matter how badly tortured they were, what matters is that these peoples rights have been taken away (which they should be), but in the completely WRONG way.
When will you people understand, torture is never the answer to everything.
