Roger Baldwin was a co-founder of the ACLU in 1920. Here is one of his famous quotes: "I am for Socialism, disarmament and ultimately, for the abolishing of the State itself ... This is lock, stock and barrel with the Obama administration, so it's no surprise that these kooks are getting off the anti-Christian bandwagon and turning their attention on something else that they think will destroy America. The Geneva Convention specifically restricts showing photos of prisoners of war... but who cares about the Geneva Convention unless it's furthering the left's agenda. The sad thing is that our tax dollars are paying for this socialist organization. It's funny that the stigma of Abu Ghraib is still a high focus of the media, but Americans getting their heads chopped off in videotapes is not. I guess the most of us, while publically taking the "moral high ground" in condemning torture, would have become seriously personally involved perpetrators in winding-up the rack, or tightening up the thumb-screws on these guys had e.g. one of our loved ones been a 9/11 victim, or, say, had we been related or family to Daniel Pearl (R.I.P.). At one podium you'll have a guy in a clean, orange jumpsuit, accompanied by an ACLU lawyer, well-fed on a Halal diet, eager to go home and eager to complain about waterboarding and harsh interrogations and air conditioning. At the next podium you'll have a coffin attended by a medical examiner reading an autopsy report detailing disembowlment and dismemberment.

While I do find it sad that Americans were forced to deploy tactics of such a nature, I also realize the need for information in a timely fashion. To date the intelligence community has done a fair job of stopping another 9/11 type of attack, and to be honest I don’t care how they got the information, I’m just damn glad they did.

I must also acknowledge the fact that the young soldiers that may have acted outside the permissible range of tactics were under tremendous pressure, to get any and all information. These young men and women were doing what they could to protect American lives. Dailey they have to read about attacks that injure or kill other young American soldiers and wonder if there was some thread of information they might have obtained.

Let us not forget that this is a media generation of young people, we feed them a constant diet of good guys doing questionable things for the good of humanity. The most current of which might be the character “ Jack Bauer “ on the top rated show “24”, this is a man that will do what ever it takes to get the job done, and Americans love it. While some may argue that these TV and Movie characters are make believe and should be thought of as such, I think they perhaps have the same impact on this generation as perhaps “John Wayne” might have had on their parent’s generation.

Re-read the entire front section of any newspaper from September 12, 2001! I support torture of even the lowest level terrorist, and waterboarding is not torture.. it's annoying at best. Soldiers often talked about how detainees were torture, but my shocker was we tortured kids. How sick is that. Just think the US sentenced Japanese soldiers to 15 years in jail for torturing US POW's now we are Torturing men/woman/children and justifying it. Many detainees have been tortured to death, at lease 7 were tortured so much their now medically insane. President Bush said many times the US doesn't torture he out right lied. Cheney was so proud of Torture he clearly admitted it on Fox News and said he's do it again. We waterboarded Mahommad 183 times and yes we got information as he confussed to killed Abe Lincoln and John Kennedy. The information Dick Cheney is claiming saved our lives was that information Bill Clinton annouced long before Bush took office. China had reported how two Chinese men were captured and tortured by the US which had nothing to do with al qeada but were question about information in China. Look the smoke and mirrors set up by the Bush Administration was clearly more then terrorist. What's sad is all this was happening right under the noses of the American people who had no one giving truthful information. No more Journalist like Edward R. I understand that there is a chain of command in the military and the environment of working in a prison is no picnic. My brother has been deployed five times in various places over the last eighteen yrs. It isn't easy for our family to have him retuning to Iraq for a second time. And it isn't easy for any soldier, so I'm not being naive.
As for me, I worked in a state prison for eleven yrs. I was a correctional officer. I wasn't there to punish anyone. But this was the mentality of some supervisors.They tried to drive their subordinates crazy,along with the inmates. One supervisor put a muslim inmate who wasn't causing any problems at all,in a holding cell and had him sing Christmas songs before the inmate was allowed to return to his cell.
This may sound funny to some. But I'm proving a point,power corrupts in that kind of envirnonment. And it's up to the higher ups to maintain civility.
It's sad at this point that the ACLU has to put things into proper perspctive,rather than our militaary leaders. Other countries have always looked at us to set an example. And we've always set high standards for ourselves,which as it should be.
I'm so glad that in this country we do have the ACLU and we are accountable for our actions.

Why is this issue so important? Why now? Why does the predsident say at one time this will not be pursued, than the next day release memos, now pictures, etc. What is the hidden agenda?

I know it's not right to show bad publicity of the military, but what's even worse is the fact that these kind of sickening tortures are even happening. Don't blame the new administration, blame the few sick and twisted people who are chosing to do this kind of thing. Aren't the people being tortured important and have worth and value as a human being? Does it matter what country their from, what kind of government they have, what their religion is, or what they've done to us. Well, I guess the most of us, while publically taking the "moral high ground" in condemning torture, would actually have become seriously personally involved as torturers - winding-up the rack - tightening up the thumb-screws - delivering electric shocks – whatever - of these guys had, for example, any of our individual loved ones been a 9/11 victim, or, say, had we been friends or family to the late Daniel Pearl (R.I.P.). The shock mainly comes from the realisation that, like us as individuals, there exists an unpleasant “sleeping giant” side to the USA that is “cruel”, "primitive", “unforgiving” and "sinister" by comparison with the normal bland and comfortable "land of the free", "motherhood & mom's apple pie" image. It makes us uncomfortable to see it (and in ourselves) so exposed.
However, apart from the photographs soon to be released, I would imagine that many of these “interrogations” were video- and/or voice-recorded in the best CSI tradition - if so, then this public release of evidence should not be confined to just photographs but should include "all" such documentation – we have a right to know exactly what is being done on our behalf and in our names!! If nothing else, it might make each of us pause to take stock and re-evaluate.
Just by the way, I lived in Tehran for several years (in the Pahlavi Shah era) and I found a generosity of spirit, behaviour and compassion among Muslim Shiite friends and colleagues that was far removed from the rabid, intolerant and fanatical image of Islam evoked by the horrors and atrocities inflicted on the innocent by todays' Bin Laden so-called-crusaders who subvert the words and sayings of the Koran to justify their outrageous conduct.
I can only sincerely hope that someday soon, the gentleness and tolerance I saw in the past will again be seen as the real face of Islam rather than the gruesome images that that today fill us with such disgust and revulsion each time we switch on the news or listen to a conversion about the latest atrocities.

Things like this truly disturb me, I would most definitely have to agree with most of the earlier comments on this one. What benefit do the AMERICAN people get from releasing these photos? AMERICAN civil liberties union?? I've heard one comment saying "those actions can be observed judged and evaluated" ?? Who has a right to judge ? You ? I think not. Another woman on here listed herself as a military mom.. like that makes her somehow a subject matter expert or in anyway a credible source. It's people like this that all too often forget that the world we live in is a dangerous and scary place. As far as human rights go, I am a US soldier and since 2002 I have spent over four years between Iraq and Afghanistan, I am as we speak on the ground in Iraq. In all my time here I have yet to have seen any Iraqi mistreated, I do not doubt that such things do occur from time to time, but the policies are very strict and punishment is severe for any mistreatment or abuse. We are not mindless drones under a cruel regime, we are an all volunteer proffessional Army and the soldiers on the ground here conduct themselves as such. It is reckless and it shows your own ignorance to make claims that insinuate that any of this is standard operating procedure or a common occurrence.

I applaud Gen Petraeus' decision to release all pictures of Gitmo infractions at once. He understands any other path could result in these photos being brought to light and used to creat further cover-up accusations. It's a "Let's come clean, beg understanding/forgiveness, and move on" maneuver. Short-term, this may make the US appear more vulnerable. Longer-term, it will help restore the world's trust in, and esteem for our values of morality and justice. This will, in the long run, make the world more secure, not less so.

Do any of you people travel outside the country? If so, consider the worst case scenario. You are arrested under suspicion of spying. Now, would you hope that those "taking care of you" would give you a chance to explain yourself. Do you get one free phone call? If I knew that I had in my possesion someone who masterminded 9/11 or bombings killing innocent people then I would probably roll some heads and try and cover it up. The problem though is the people that may not have had anything to do with this war on terror as it was called. Those people did not have a voice. And those in power over them may take advantage of them. Based on a tendancy for racism and hate that we all naturally feel when our fellow people are killed in the line of battle or in suicide plane bombings. When I was in the service 49 years ago, in accordance to the the Geneva Convention, we were told that all we had to provide to the enemy, if captured, was our rank, name, and serial number. In addition, if an officer issued an order that we found extremely inappropriate or morally offensive and not related to direct combat we could refuse the order (and possibly suffer consequences). That we now have people in America defending torture defies one of the foundations that this country is built upon. The argument that these people are "terrorist" doesn't cut the mustard. When somebody is trying to kill you you not interested whether they're terrorists or some recognized country. When the communist Chinese used waterboarding in North Korea on our American soldiers they usually did it within hours after capturing them. For us to do it weeks or months later makes no sense -- as if the friends of the one being tortured are going to stay in the same place or do the same things after their comrade was captured? Obviously they're not stupid, or we would have Captured Osama Bin Laden a long time ago.

I want to start off by saying that I am in the military and think the whole idea of torture is pretty stupid. I mean the Bush admin used loop holes to do what they did because they knew that it was wrong. People are saying that they are POW's ,but they are not POW's. POW's are protected by international laws so to get around this Bush created the term "military combatants" In one case we even tortured a BRITISH citizen with no proof for over a year before the British government got him released. I am not saying it is the soldiers fault who is over there and I still support them 100%, but hopefully the release of the pictures will help bring the higher level people who really are responsible to court where they can defend themselves even though they denied that right to thousands.

To all you people who say it ok to torture:
You are all sick,sad indaviduals who probably callyour selves christians but talk about murdering innocent men, women, and children in the name of spreading democracy. You are all cowards or psycho's, take your pick, because you are advocating killing people who had nothing to do with 9/11. Where is the evidence that the hijackers came from Iraq or that they were supported by saddam. America is no better than the hihackers that commited 9/11 because we have killed more innocent people than was killed on that day. If we had never gone into Iraq under these false pretences American soldiers would not have needlessly been put in harms way. If the beheadings are what upsets you well than maybe you'll think twice about going over their to try and collect on all that tax free money that the government tempted people with. Pictures? Really? Is there seriously a need to release pictures? It wasn't enough that the US government has indicated it was using "enhanced interogation techniques", and then proceeded to NAMED THEM? Is it not enough that the military has acknowledged the things that happened overseas and NAMED THEM?

For the folks attempting to support this inane nonsense regarding PICTURES, I have only three questions:

What purpose does it serve to release photos?

Is it somehow insufficient to simply acknowledge what was done?

Is there a political motive behind this?

I'm having a hard time believing the last question to be a "no".

I agree that these photos are horrifying and probably would provoke our enemy. But the photos are just artifacts showing how the prisoners are treated. The real issue here is the tactics used by the US; the photos are just a symptom. If you are outraged by what is depicted in these photos, then you should be outraged because our military was directed to use these techniques, not because evidence is now surfacing.

As a loyal and forever a Democrat and strong supporter of President Obama, I am so very glad that he has decided NOT to release those photos. In my opinion, it will serve no positive purpose for the American people and our troops in the long run. The pictures we have seen and the memos that we have seen and read should be enough. Bush, Chaney and company engaged in torture. Releasing additional pictures will not change that fact not one iota.

President Obama, Secretary Gates, the generals in Iraq & Afganistan, and others, have engaged in further mature, reasonable and seriously focused dialogue and have rightly decided not to release these photos.
The President and his team have to protect our troops in war theater and hopefully, keep the sick Al Qaeda and Taliban from being further INSANELY INCITED by the revealing of those pictures.

The ACLU and other Progressive and left thinking members of My Proud Democratic Party are pushing President Obama's "transparency" theme for something that I think, in the long run, will be more harmful than good. I am so glad President Obama and his team have flipped-flopped for the mature and best reasons... for the good of America, its citizens, and our troops. As Commander in Chief, he "must defend and protect America and her interest" above all else.

So, to my fellow Democrats, ACLU, and others, I agree with the President on this matter of NOT RELEASING the photos. TIMING is everything and now IS NOT THE TIME to demand release of these photos. PLEASE Do not let revenge get the better of our common sense...We Democrats are MUCH, MUCH better people.

If you don't want to have any problem with middle east, stop introding in that region and they won't boder you, you kill million of people around world and complaining, that you have recieved a pay back of attacking two building with 3000 dead people.
