There will never be a good way to loose our marines and soldiers, but considering all the ways you can die in a war zone, I wonder if "dying instantly" is of comfort to the four marines' families. It feels like one to my heart.

I am also once again struck with how long these lost men are. They aren't old enough to drink legally, but they've died in the line of duty? They've died before they really began to live, we'd say if they weren't in the military. Does being in the military & dying while enlisted change that perspective?

Just some of my rhetorical thoughts as I ponder on the list of the lost from Afghanistan. I have not forgotten this war; I wish it wasn't the same for the country as a whole.

Rest in peace, dear men.

Marine Sgt. Michael Washington, 20, of Tacoma, Wash.
Marine Lance Cpl. Layton Crass, 22, of Richmond, Ind.
Marine Pfc. Dawid Pietrek, 24, of Bensenville, Ill.
Marine Pfc. Michael Patton, 19, of Fenton, Mo.
Marine Capt. Eric Terhune, 34, of Lexington, Ky.
Marine Lance Cpl. Andrew Whitacre, 21, of Bryant, Ind.
Navy Hospitalman Dustin Burnett, 19, of Fort Mohave, Ariz.
Marine Sgt. Matthew Mendoza, 24, of San Antonio, Texas.

These Marines were all part of my son's unit, the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment (2/7th). We also just lost another Marine:

Staff Sgt. Christopher D. Strickland, 25, of Labelle, Fla., who was killed on the 25th of June.

That's 8 Marines and one Corpsman lost in 11 days in the same unit. And the 2/7th aren't quite half-way through their deployment.

Pray for the families of these brave men. Do not forget our sons are dying while bringing freedom to those who cannot attain it on their own.

What has happened to INFORMED reporting? Tonight, 6/30/08, Brian Williams (and probably others on other channels) were reporting on John McCain's war record.

What General Wesley Clark SAID, and what the news anchors missed was a correct statement. Being a fighter pilot is not a requirement to be president. Just like being a news anchor, doctor, dentist or mechanic is not a requirement to be the president.

Every news station now prides themselves on "Investigative Reporting" and having top-notch New Magazine shows like "Dateline", but when it comes to the daily news, very little is useful information and a lot of it guessing and assuming. The scary part of all this is that there are many people out there who can't think for themselves and will take what is said on the news as fact.

Do yourself and your company a favor and improve on who, what, when, where and why for your reports.
