The health of party unity

The road to health care reform approaches a shaky bridge tonight. Democratic leaders will test the strength of the underpinnings of that bridge – their 60 seat majority in the US Senate – in a vote over whether to allow debate on a health care bill. It will mark the second Saturday night this month that critical votes on health care have taken place on Capitol Hill.

Although tonight's vote is strictly procedural, as GOP Senator Judd Gregg of New Hampshire told me this morning on TODAY, as far as Republicans are concerned "the gun is loaded," meaning they consider a vote in favor of allowing debate, likely a vote in favor of the bill itself. No Republican is expected to vote yes. At this writing, Democrats believe they have secured all 60 votes they need to open debate. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell is on the hill and will update where things stand when we come on the air.

On tonight's broadcast we will also show you an anguished plea for help by a British couple hijacked at sea by Somali pirates. Their captors have released video of the couple speaking on camera as menacing young men surround them with guns. Of course the pirate's intent is to raise pressure on British authorities to pay ransom for their release. We'll get reaction from London.

Walking through Manhattan's famous shopping districts these days, two things stand out. Holiday decorations are up, and the number of empty store fronts has exploded since last Christmas season. With that said, NBC's Rehema Ellis will report tonight that retailers may be turning the tables on shoppers who be thinking they can once again cash in on bloated store inventories.

Good Evening Mr.Holt, I had to watch all the reports from the website due to Notre Dame football running into overtime. The local news came on so Nightly News was not broadcasted here. Another fine broadcast on Saturday. First of all the report from Stephanie Gosk about the couple captured by the Somali pirates. Seeing them held at gunpoint talkig into the camera and asking for the British Government's help was heartbreaking and frightening. These pirates seem to  stop at nothing taking over ships and asking for millions of dollars in ransom. One hopes so much for the release of this couple who didn't have security and really are in a desperate situaiton. I hope they are returned home alive and safe.

The report by Rehema Ellis concerning the retail stores having bargains early before Thanksgiving is great for customers because people will most likely be spending less due to the economy and stores need the business for the holiday season. Buying more practical items for people is great although many of the things mentioned one buys alot anyway like sweaters, jeans, pajamas etc.. Using the debit card and cash will be popular forms of paying since credit card debt can be very high and people want to save money. As stated in the report it is a sign of the times.

The report by Lisa Myers about the program that is supposed to help Veterans instead being fraudulent and not helping them was awful to learn. The money is supposed to be going to this program, but it funneled to multi-million dollar companies even in Europe hurts the Veterans who have come home from being in the front lines of battle and not allowing them to flourish in businesses of their own. The Veterans deserve much better treatment after fighting for our country and this should never have happened.

The reports by Mr.Viqueira and Kelly O'Donnell showed the Senate vote on healthcare this evening is vitally important and has already spurred so much debate. One only hopes that at some point an agreement on this bill can be made. Time is of the essence!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Exrta,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO
The question on my mind, and I believe, the minds of many others is this, "We know that there was a $100M bribe written into the Reid Bill to get the Lady from Louisiana to vote for the bill, so how many others were there, and how big?"
Lester

Your broadcast was not carried last night in
Louisville.

My husband brought me a new computer today and
it will take time to learn all the ins and out
and I hope after the holidays to knuckle down
and pick it up.  I am not high teck so it will not
be easy but it wll be a New Year's Resolution.
I want to wish everybody a Happy Thanksgiving,
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Phyllis
Unfortunately, Lester, there was no Saturday edition of Nightly News on the East Coast because football is much more important (meaning profitable) to the NBC powers-that-be.  By the way, in your third paragraph, I think you meant to say "the pirates' intent", rather than "the pirate's intent".  It's a plural possessive, not a singular possessive.
