The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Sebelius steps back

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said today the independent panel that made the new breast cancer screening recommendations "do not set federal policy" and that "our policies remain unchanged...my message to women is simple. Mammograms have always been an important life-saving tool..keep doing what you have been doing for years."

Her statement appeared to fly in the face of the panel's dramatic recommendations this week delaying when women are advised to start getting regular mammograms to 50, and questioning the usefulness of self-exams.

Just a few moments ago, I asked Secretary Sebelius to explain why she's stepping back from the recommendations and sending a mixed message to the American people--and whether, because of the fallout, this was a case of politics trumping science.

Nancy Snyderman also helps sort through the mixed messages, which understandably have a lot of women confused today.

We'll also hear from President Obama, who talked to Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd, and Anne Thompson has a pretty darn cool story—from my hometown, it turns out. Dear old Ashland, Oregon gives us a surprise about what can go green.

On a personal note, all this running around has caused a run in my stockings.  Bet Brian never has this problem.

Ann,

I agree with HHS Secretary Kathleen
Sebelius that every woman has to
make the right decision for herself.

A good turn out for Brian in Arizona
where he was honored with the Walter
Cronkite Award which shows how respected
he is by his peers.  All at NBC are
proud of him as well they should be.  An
amazingly remarkable man.

On a personal note:  You could run
circles around anybody even with
with ruin in your stockings.  Bet Brian
would agree with that.though he no
doubt would not trade his socks for
your stockings.

Have a nice evening.

Good Evening Ann, Another fine broadcast this evening. Great to see you filling in for Mr.Williams. A BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO MR.WILLIAMS FOR BEING AWARDED THE WALTER CRONKITE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM!! Truly Very Deserving! It was wonderful that you showed him receiving the award at the end of the broadcast!! CONGRATULATIONS MR.WILLIAMS!
Now on to the broadcast.
First of all the report by Dr.Nancy Snyderman concerning the guidelines for when women should get mammograms. Hearing just two days after new guidelines were stated that women in their forties should wait until age 50 to be screened, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius states that women should continue getting routine mammograms annually. In other words keep doing the same thing they have been doing. It is extremely confusing to hear contradicting answers to a very serious question, yet having routine exams will help catch anything early which is good. Looking at the guidelines then seeing one's doctor is good advice.

The report by Mr.Todd and his one-on-one interview with President Obama showed the President is going to make a decision on US troop levels in the next couple of weeks. Stating the decision will be clear and give a full strategy and path to ending the war in Afghanistan will be vital. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families who have loved ones fighting in the dual wars and hopefully this strategy will bring them home soon.

The report by Mr.Truong about the single mother in the military refusing to be deployed due to having no one to care for her baby is an awful situation. The single mothers in the military having to balance caring for their children and serving their country is a difficult balance. Milestones in the child's life can be missed by the parent due to being overseas fighting for ones country. It is heartbreaking. Hopefully, this mom will be able to work out this difficult situation.

Thank You for the broadcast Ann! I am sorry you got a run in your stockings running around the newsroom! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO
Hi Ann,

It's been awhile. You look well. And don't worry about your stockings, we can't see them. If it's cold outside, Brian might wear stockings for all we know.

It gets more and more confusing regarding mammograms. When Sec. Sebelius puts it the way she did, I doubt that our insur. co.,( which I'm about to lose anyway) will pay for annual screenings. They probably have it set up where everyone, including drs., have to abide by the federal guidelines.

I like Chuck Todd, but he needs to back off from Pres. Obama a little. The President made it clear that he's made his decision about Afghanistan and no, Chuck isn't getting the scoop. People forget that some things need to be kept close to the vest until just the right moment--maybe in the next three weeks.

I'm proud of the way Eric Holder is handling himself in front of the Republicans. I do believe he's more informed about the best way to go concerning the 9/11 suspects. If they walk, which they won't, we can thank Cheney and Bush.

Most soldiers who have kids, whether they're single parents or not, have problems leaving their kids, and not just emotionally. It's hard on everyone. The military is a very disruptive kind of life style. People really need to think about what they're doing when they enlist. And this particular soldier's case is no more important than any others. That's just my opinion.

I love motorcycles and I had a small one until my husband wrecked it. I saw an advertisemnet for Indian Motorcycle's "Roadmaster." OMG, is it a work of art! You should get you one Ann (Curry and Thompson), and go down the streets of Manhattan, rollin' fat! Let the guys buy those electric bikes.

Brian, we love you! You looked great accepting your Walter Cronkite Award! We'll see you tomorrow night.

Ann, have a great evening and rest of the week. You did a nice job as always.

Congratulations to Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) on the first leg of your new tour! It's been a long time. I'll be following you on your blog. Take care, it's a wild world, baby!
A step back may be the new 'catch phrase' for a lot of semingly (on the surface) good ideas from the political dance troop.  Appears, however, they're not too careful and are stepping back on one another!  Hee-Haw!

My personal doctor is my dance partner when it comes to the status of my health.  Saving a life is more important than saving political face ... and until every politician has M.D. or better after their names, I'm not buying this cost saving strategy!

Drug companies just raised their prices, insurance companies threaten to raise theirs, doctors aren't that happy either.  Fact is, we're all unhappy with the high dollars of health care premiums, drugs, doctors, and others who have joined what I can only label as:  The American Healthcare Cartel!

Anti-trust laws ... where are you?  If this is not 'publicly (government) approved price-fixing', I don't know what is.  If I tried to fix the price for a hot dog in my local community, I'd get 50 years for violating these laws!  Huh?

Good job, Ann.  Pin (I mean break up) this 'cartel' to the mat (I mean floor) of the stock exchange!  Insurance companies buy drug companies buy doctors offices buy medical supply companies buy each other buy new research facilities buy ... buy ... buy ... FOR PROFIT.  The attitude is:  Heck with healthcare; yippie to the dollar (now if we could only get China to help with that)!

Enjoy YOUR day, and thanks for sharing!
Hi Ann as for your stocking problem well you might want to ask Brian's wife about his socks. Most men never deal with socks that get holes. We don't really see them anyway.

Now it was a little shock to hear Goldman Sachs CEO apologize for robbing the US taxpayers but at lease he can now sleep knowing that's off his chest. Law Makers and Americans didn't seem to have a problem with it since ex CEO Hank Paulson was appointed in office to make sure Goldman Sachs got as much as they could. I thought it was interesting how Goldman Sachs started a bank just in time to get the bank bailout money for free. I wonder when the rest of the thrives will apologize.

Many complain about Obama taking his time about sending our soldiers to Afghanistan. Well just think how many young lives would have been saved if Bush/Cheney hadn't rushed in and invaded Iraq. Now we learn that Karzai who as appointed President by Bush/Cheney was robbing us blind for 7 years and looking to continue. The US Taxpayers gave Iraq 1 Trillion dollars and Bush said they never had to pay it back. We could use that money now for Health Care. Well Iraq has a 800 billion in surplus and a strong Economy.

Sarah is really something. President Obama was correct not to even deal with Sarah's opinion. Now that's like asking a 2 year old about your investments and shares in stock. Sarah is using eveyone for money to pay her bills and hopefully pay off Levi before he goes to court and spills the beans. As long as Sarah uses God's name people will follow just as it's been done for Bush, Cheney, Vitters, Craig and even Mark Foley. All are true Christian American Family Values we should not follow.

Brian has been on show many shows and is really funny. I heard the question about Diane Sawyer replacing Charlie Gibson. Well I watched Diane for so long and really don't think she'll be any different then Charlie. Diane has a habit of beating a topic to death. One day I hope to see a female Anchor woman who is really good at the job and give Brian a run for his money as top Anchor. Right now Brian your safe for a long time, enjoy the ride.

I enjoy reading all the comments by the bloggers on this site. You know me I have alot to say but I do read your comments too. My Dad always said speak your mine but respect others opinions.  Have a great evening all and thanks Ann
Brian in a skirt, panty hose and pumps.   Jimmy Chos aside --  Ann Curry now that is funny!
Evening, Ann.

It was great having you fill in for Brian as he accepted his Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism. I am SO VERY proud and happy for him! He accepted it in the most humble way, and showed just how much this reward in the name of Walter Cronkite means to him. I couldn't be happier for him! It was so very emotional, and inspiring to see his dream come true.

Thank you for filling in for Brian this evening. It must be a lot of fun running around for Nightly News every once in a while!

We'll see you in the morning on Today. An early Happy Birthday to you!

Goodnight, and take care.
-Cary
My friend, an ardent fan of Brian, phoned at five this morning saying, “Important...You must view the web video tribute.”
And, she was persistent, my cell rang 3 times.
Being new to “Nightly”, she says there are magnificent, youthful photos.. “A must see.”
We all know Brian is smart, dedicated, charismatic, and these traits help design “Nightly”.
My friend finds his shyness engaging.
We began, seriously, watching “Nightly” in early July and I love the fact that serious news is being delivered seriously.
It all began for us when we saw “Inside the Obama White House.”
Again, Brian, Congratulations.  Deserving.
Oh!
Two Words –
TOTALLY HANDSOME
Missing everything good and current events .. but I will catch up in two weeks.  Grateful for the internet.

As always, nice to see you Ann. You're a credit to your network.
Another woman who fits that description is Kelly O'Donnell. She's fair and factual....far different from Norah O'Donnell.
My sister died a awful death at age 47.  She noticed a problem with her breast and went to her doctor.  She was at the end of exam and the doctor gave her a clean bill of health.  She said what is this thing in my breast. (The doctor had missed it.) When she talked to me later, I yelled over the phone,"See another doctor now. Do not stay with this one."

She had the nodes removed, but not the breast out of vanity. Went through kemo. They said she was fine, but it might come back in another form.  It did.  My point is early detection gives women a better chance.
Cancer does not know what age you are.
Sounds like a Death Panel to me.
