The American approach to Islamic terror is changing on many levels. Tonight we'll show you what may soon become the American prison for Guantanamo Bay detainees, on a day there was more sharp reaction over the 9/11 terror trials to be held in New York.

Our chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel is in Afghanistan, and he will have the latest from the battlefield on this evening's broadcast. Meantime, White House correspondent Savannah Guthrie is traveling with the president in Shanghai. She'll tell us about the changing dynamic between the U.S. and China, as well as the decision still hanging over the president about the way forward in Afghanistan.

I recently spent a terrific day over in Queens, New York with singer Tony Bennett and his wife Susan. They toured me through a new school of the arts they founded. It's a New York public high school that demands excellence on not only the stage and in the studio, but in the classroom. We'll have some of my conversation with Tony about the school and his career tonight on NBC Nightly News. I hope can join us.

They dont have the right to a fair trial and to bring them to the US ecpesally where they distroyed and killed many people? Smart one Barack!
Lester,Why is Nightly News and Andrea Mitchell still peddleing sarah Palin's book this evening? There is alot of legitimate serious news going on in the world, you don't have to give an airhead like Palin a free promotion. Nobody but religious right wingers will buy her book anyway.
Good Evening Mr.Holt, Another fine broadcast this evening. Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast!! PLEASE STAY EXTRA,EXTRA SAFE ALWAYS! Now on to the broadcast. First of all Richard's report from Kabul exhibited how General McChrystal is praising the Afghan Security Forces, yet the US troops are still waiting or as Richard stated in limbo about how many US troops will be deployed in the region in the near future. The debate about troop levels goes on in the United States, yet there is no talk of the debate in Afghanistan. The delay could be a tactic to perssure President Hamid Karzai to clean-up the corruption within the Afghan Government before deciding on the troop levels, but as the corruption is so deep it could fail and Karzai may not be able to clean-up the terrible corruption. Making promises to corrupt people during his campaign to make them part of his government does not help. As Richard stated the success depends on the Afghan Government as well as the US troops on the ground. Time will tell after Thursday when Hamid Karzai is innaugurated into office for the region.
Excellent Reporting Richard Always!

The report by Savannah Guthrie from China for President Obama's trip tells of a very delicate diplomatic line bewteen the United States and China. The US being in debt to China makes it a hard push for major issues especially the economy. The town hall meeting hosted by President Obama tomorrow in Shanghai will certainly be interesting.

The series called "Our Planet" with a report by Anne Thompson showed how the taking down of the dams once used for power is now helping the salmon spawn along with other species to survive besides providing much better scenery. It seems a good idea and it cost far too much to keep the dams. Times have changed and new ways of generating power are now available. It really makes the areas so much more scenic and again better for the species of animals living in the waters.

The "Making A Difference" segment by you concerning the Frank Sinatra High School founded by Tony Bennett and his wife Susan in Queens was really great. The students are getting all the great performance classes, but also the academic classes they need too. Mr.Bennett started a terrific high school which helps the students strive for excellence. I like Mr.Bennett's statement, "If you love what you do there is no need to stop." Fine words from a fine entertainer!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Always wonderful to see Richard! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe And Well Richard!
XOXO
Lester,

One of the first songs I learned to
play on the piano was "I Left my
Heart in San Francisco." by Tony
Bennett.  Which inspires me
tremendously.  I may start playing
the piano again, which according
to an expert is more difficult
than using the computer.  And more
relaxing, in my opinion.

Hi richard! you looked absolutely wonderful tonight!! it was so wonderful not to see you armored in the bullet-proof battle gear!! you looked fantastic!!

   love always Erin Thomas
Hey Lester,

NBC producers, editors, etc.:

I understand that it's time for Andrea Mitchell to get back at Sarah Palin, but how long are you going to keep this thing going? Sarah Palin does not represent true politics. She's a joke. If that's all Republicans have to offer their party in 2012, then I almost feel sorry for them. But stop with reading and discussing the book. Otherwise you'll seem like an "Oprah wanna be talk show."

Lester, it's good to see the salmon having a chance to make a comeback. I hope we didn't lose a species. The dams were important in their time, and some still are, but a major part of going green is to get rid of all of the old structures that are obsolete--and not
replace them by building strip malls or subdivisions to take the place of run down mills, etc. I think we've gotten to the point of not seeing the Earth as a living, breathing entity. Our very lives depend on it.

I've taken NASA for granted all these yrs. And to realize that we only have six liftoffs left is sad. Saving the Earth and branching out goes hand in hand, as far as I'm concerned. You can't live in the past or solely concentrate on the future. Every now and then, we need a "now" moment. I know.. . I'm going deep.

My mother met Tony Bennett quite a few yrs. ago. He performed at a night club she was working in. I remember she said that he was nice. He and his wife are dong a great job with the arts school. Kids can never be too exposed to art in any form. Sometimes, it's the very thing that saves a person, to create it or to watch it being performed.

Lester, I hope you have a nice week. We haven't forgotten about you, as far as Xmas. I think that Brian may be getting a lot of ties, what do you want? What do viewers usually give anchors for Christmas? I can't say that I've ever gone there... let us know.
Hi Lester
Interesting news today as President Obama now has a town in China named for him. What a great welcome he's been getting overseas as even Russia is willing to work with President Obama.

Well pay back is something else but when a person turns and slaps you in her book it's something else. Andrea Mitchell was one of the biggest GOP supporters and clearly supported Sarah Palin. The special she did with Sarah while visiting Alaska was all love and kisses. Let a snake Sarah showed Andrea and made Andrea sound like a fool. Well Andrea wasn't alone as the McCain Campaign and even a Republican Law Maker from Alaska had in correct information in Sarah's book. Now can someone tell me again why the Media is talking about Sarah and why we should be her fake book?  I ordered Harry Potter's book for 21 dollars and Sarah's book is now 4.99 and it's not out yet. Once again  I see Sarah's book for kitty litter lineing and picking up dog droppings.

On a sad note I feel bad for the citizens of Montana who voted for the Gitmo prisoners to be placed in Montana's 27 million dollar prison which is empty. Just think the citizens are asking Obama to place the prisoners in that jail while their Law Makers says the people don't want it. Thousands of jobs would come to that town which is badly needed. Americans should think careful who they vote to represent them. President Obama is the leader of the US but can't direct something to help a State without the support of the State Representative. Now we could use the money out here in California but our Govenor doesn't speak English.

The movie 2012 was great and Preious was Oscar worthy. Now I have to watch Eli Manning's brother play football today as I wear my number 10 Giants Jersey.

oh I asked Peaches about Bruce's mishap and she said who cares it's the Boss and it's his music the people came to hear. He could have said Jersey and the crowd would have still cheer. That tells me alot as the Boss and I are so close in age. Now when I make a mistake just cheer for me ok.

Have a great weekend all

OBAMA PRESSES FOR INTERNET FREEDOM
IN CHINA.  "The more freely information
flows the stronger the society becomes"
he tells students.

Yeah right.  Like Free Speech is
allowed on AOL.  Most tell-it-as-it-is
comments are censored, which is
unconsitutional.

Have a nice day!!!

Does it ever occur to us that those who inflicted this horrendous pain upon our nation and the people of New York wanted us to know that we are not the only people hurting in this world and being forced to deal with pain on a daily basis?  Is avoiding dealing with pain within us and between us a part of the ongoing problem of our world? Isn't facing the pain and going through it a part of the healing process?  Why does no one in these reports sight that aspect of the painful decision to try the terrorists where they inflicted the most pain that we can at least show the world our capacity to face those who would inflict such horrendous pain?
Lester,

As I wrote in a previous email to you,
I made the comment that I disagree with
the decision to transport the suspects
to NYC but that my husband did not see
a problem with it.  However, from Day l
he has criticized our justice system in
the courts with innocent people (like
O.J. Simpson, An American tragedy) are in
prison while murderers walk the streets,
and anybody who thinks this through
realizes that common sense dictates
that New York City is the wrong venue
to try five co=conspirators in the Sept.11
2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.
As I have said my husband disagrees with me on
the venue for the trial
but his thinking on our quirky court system
makes the case against NYC for the trial.

After tuning in Sunday to the Today Show
I watched David Gregory's interview with
Secretary of State Hilliary Clinton, which
was very interesting.  Maybe she and
Sarah Palin will drink Starbucks coffee
together and discuss her book.  I can't
think of anything better to break the
ice than coffee and a book.

Have a nice day!

Barack Obama doesn't like to use the term "Islamic Terrorism. It's a no-no and now we have those responsible for 9/11 in a civil court in New York where one person (out of twelve) can disagree and they could be set free. It's a joke ... and that is the Obama court system of terrorism.

They should be tried in Military Court for acts of war, not treated like they stole Rolex watches.
Hey again Lester,

this is the perfect time for me to point a few things out, considering that the moderators haven't gotten around to posting the rest of your comments from Sat. night.

If the far right wants to blame anybody for "Islamic terrorism" and the problems we're going to have in the court room regarding the terrorists responsible for 9/11, you have to look at the Cheney/Bush administration. That's right, Cheney's name in front of Bush's. And you have to understand what "enhanced interrogation techniques" mean. So thanks to those two, it's going to be very difficult in ANY court.

Lester, I wrote in the Sat. comment why I changed my name (not legally) to "moonshadow." I like Cat Stevens' music, especially the song, "Moonshadow." He's on tour now and has a new CD out called  "Roadsinger." And yes, by God, he's a Muslim! He goes by the name of Yusuf Islam. But for anybody who does the "guilt by association'" thing, you don't have to worry about Cat.

And please, don't get me confused with "full moon."
