Back from the road

By Lester Holt, NBC News anchor

My apologies for skipping the blog on Saturday. I was making my way back to New York after covering the shooting at Fort Hood, and didn't arrive in the newsroom until shortly before last night's newscast.

We are of course following up on the latest developments from Fort Hood on tonight's broadcast.

We're also tracking the progress of Hurricane Ida, which looks like it could hit the Gulf Coast sometime this week. In fact, Louisiana Governor Jindal has just declared a state of emergency. We'll get a live update from our colleagues at The Weather Channel on our broadcast this evening.

The big story out of Washington is the passage last night of a health care reform bill by the House of Representatives. It's a big deal for Democrats, and the president, but all roads now lead through the U.S. Senate. We're going to break it all down.

Thanks for checking in. We'll look for you tonight on NBC Nightly News.

Apology accepted Lester. After my 5 month vacation traveling on planes, trains, car and bus I know how you feel.

Congressman Chao represented his citizens by voting for their benefit. We all won yesterday with the 220 vs 215 vote for Health Care. Now it will be interesting to see how the voters feel about those Law Makers who voted NO. Few realize that other then the Houseing Problems many families are losing their homes because of being denied Health Care and the famous Pre Condition. I do believe even the Teabaggers will be using the Health Care and forget all about their Protest. I was reading about the attacks on FDR during his plan for Social Security, while we see how all who reach the old age are now benefitting. As AARP gave full support to the Obama Health Care Plan one might wonder what reason the voters of NO will give? It looks like Senator Liberman is making it clear he will support the Republican Party by fillibuster. I wonder is Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid are paying attention. Liberman has used every Party name while clearly following and voting the Republican Policy.

It was good to hear President and First Lady are going to Fort Hood as is former President Bush. Our troops need the support of our Commander-in-Chief. It's sad that Senator Liberman and others are calling this an act of a terrorist. The rumors and lies are taking over the truth.

Gov. Jindal blocked all the help the President wanted to give the Louisiana citizens. Jindal felt it was more important to follow the Republican Plan to make sure Obama/Biden and the USA failed then to help the people of his State. He put his hopes for being the Republican candidate for President before the needs. Well life always has a way of teaching us what's more important. Now Louisiana will need help with this Hurricane. We never know what tomorrow brings.

I'm watching Eli Manning and wearing my number 10 jersey for luck.

Have a great Sunday all
Dear Lester,

I wish everyone would stop trying to put the Ft. Hood shooter's actions into context according to his ethnicity or his religious background.  The fact of the matter is that he is a loser.  He is no different than the losers who shot up Columbine, or the loser who shot up Virginia Tech, or the loser who shot up the Orlando office park, or the loser who shot up the women's exercise class at the gym in Pennsylvania, or the loser who shot up the Amish schoolhouse, or the myriad of losers who have gone on killing sprees in shopping malls.  The common thread amongst all these people is that they are social misfits who possess a LIFELONG inability to interact or to express themselves in appropriate ways.  They gravitate towards extreme behaviors and beliefs in order to make themselves feel powerful.  People do not just "snap"; they commit heinous acts which reveal their true identities.  So, the Ft. Hood shooter was "picked on," to which I say man up.  You're 39, not 13.  You're in the Army.  A medical doctor, trained in psychiatry of all things.  There is no excuse.  I don't want to hear it.  He is a weak human being.  A loser.  He has brought shame on his family and on his faith.

Laurel
Thanks to Janet Shamlian for her heartfelt series of reports on the impact of the tragedy on the community.  And, kudos to the entire NBC team at Ft. Hood for their excellent work in a very difficult situation.
Good Evening Mr.Holt, I fully understand why you didn't have time for a Daily Nightly blog posting. You did a fine job last evening with the abbrevaited broadcast and tonight with the regular half-hour broadcast. First of all the report by Mr.Viqueira on the voting and passing of a healthcare reform bill in the House of Representatives. Passing by 3 votes over the limit it is a historic vote, but not after much heated debate between the House members. Now the bill will go to the Senate with undoubtably more debate, but hopefully by the end of the year everyone will be sarisfied with the healthcare reform bill. Time will tell.
The report by Mr.Santos on Hurricane Ida going into the Gulf of Mexico certainly shows this system carries much rain and category 1 force winds. Hopefully, if it makes landfall on the coast of Louisiana it won't be too bad. Here in Georgia we are expecting some rain on Tuesday resulting from Hurricane Ida.

The reportv by Janet Shamlian concerning the tragedy at Fort Hood showed how the community came together today to remember the victims at church services and to make carepackages for the families. So very tragic to learn the youngest victim was only 19yrs old and the range of ages going up to only 62yrs old. And a mother to be which was extremely tragic and sad too. The commanders should really have noticed the warning signs of Hasan due to reports of complaints of his  rants against America and strong extremist beliefs.
It is good to know one of the survivors has now gone back home to his family after being hospitalized. A tragic event if this nature always makes people even stronger. I hope all those victims currently being hospitalized recover quickly and return home soon.

The report by Mr.Brokaw about the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall brought to mind his coverage of the historic event. The fall of the Berlin Wall did signal a dramatic change and gave people in that country freedom for the first time to cross over freely. It is interesting to see the historic line where the wall once stood and it is quite significant to see the remnants of the wall behind the wire fencing. The new generations need to be knowledgeable of what life was like when the wall existed in the country and not forget. There certainly have been many changes since the fall and all the dignitaries gathering for the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall will very historic.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary And Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard! Look forward to your reports soon!
XOXO

Hey Lester,

I hope you had a nice week despite a busy one.

As for what's happened in Ft. Hood, I'm so glad retired Col. Jack Jacobs(MSNBC analyist) wasn't on the bradcast discussing friendly fire again. Even if it took place, now's not the time to be speculating. It was irresponsible and in poor taste to have him on any night bringing it up. NBC should let the investigators handle that while the families are in  morning.
I was waiting to see if NBC mentioned the following or printed my comment that contained some very important information. They did neither. On the morning of the Ft. Hood shootings, Pres. Obama was still able to meet with representives and leaders of 564 American Indian tribes. Right: FIVE HUNDRED SIXTY FOUR tribal leaders. That represents quite a lot of great people. Thanks to Washington Post for printing the transcripts of part of the meeting. Here's the link:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/11/05/AR2009110502365.html

Pres. Obma is very aware of the statistics, such as on some reservations, the unemployment rate is 80%. Read the transcripts. It was extremely disappointing that the producers or editors or whoever, would do one of those quick "elective bits- mare wins horse race" but you couldn't find time for a very important meeting that hasn't happened since 1994 and never on that magnitude. Maybe that's why NBC (not Brian and Lester per se) are losing viewers. You don't know what's important anymore. That's sad, that's a disgrace and a disservice.

Lester, thanks for the broadcast and I hope you have a nice week.
Hi Lester:

Don't worry about Saturday as there was no NN in my neck of the woods!    I just sat down for some NN with a cup of tea and no Lester.   I wanted to hear news on Fort Hood instead I had the local news and sports update.    This NN weekend saga drives me nuts.

Thanks for reading.  Peace to all!
Lester,

Whether one is for or against the
Health Care Plan, in my opinion, that
the bill passed is history.  What
next?  Dead on arrival in Senate, maybe.
It's not over.  The issue I have that
you are required to take it or be
penalized which seems to me would be
unconstitutional.

Great coverage on the Berlin Wall.
I also saw your interview with
Tom Brokaw on The Today Show.

It is heartening that the community in
Fort Hood has come together.  All are
in my thoughts and prayers.

On your abbreviated coverage Saturday
night of the USS New York. to me,
it is a symbol of healing and strength.

I liked your take on Naples.  Interesting
about the convicts.  "Once a thief,
always a thief" said one man.  I
don't believe it. That's what redemption
is all about.  Democracy keeps me in
check.

Another terrific broadcast.  AOL
shut down on me again last night.

About the 10 percent increase in taxes'in
California, I would be hopping mad
too.

Phyllis

Lester,
Great coverage from Fort Hood, and all
of you were in my prayers and it is
wonderful that the community there is
coming together.

I think only the shooter knows his
motive and perhaps we will find that
out when he recovers.

Kimberly is indeed a hero.

Lester,

coming together.

Kimberly is indeed a hero.

And you are an awesome anchor.

Only the shooter knows his motive and
we will find that out when he recovers--
if he does.

Lester,
It is not my intent to fan the flames,
but I just read that Lieberman,
Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security
Committee wants Congress to determine
whether the shootings constitutes
a terrorist attack.  Isn't the
job of Homeland Security to protect
our country?  And Lieberman is
Chairman of the Senate Homeland Affairs
Security & Governmental Committee.
Something is wrong here, and Lieberman
and Casey should figure it out.
Phyllis
Lester,
PS to an email I sent you around 4 a.m.
this morning.  I just read ONline:

The requirement is in there (healthcar)
because it was demanded by the
insurance industry.  The irony is that
during the primary Obama came under
attact from both Hilliary Clinton
and John Edwards for leaving out the
requirement.  He was clearly trying to
avoid giving Republicans any reason
to call him a big-goverment socialist
(and therefore in my mind it would NOT
be unconstitutional as I thought
when I wrote you and I believe I saw
where Gibbs had looked into the matter
as well).
Phyllis
Lester

CNN's John King, who is replacing
Lou Dobbs, will not be in your
league for straight news.

Phyllis
