We are covering an awful breaking story at Ft. Hood in Texas.  Not only is it the single largest military installation in the country, this makes for the single largest loss of life in a single day domestically in some time. It’s an awful story, and there's a lot we don't know at this hour. We'll try to compile the very best reporting for tonight's broadcast, and we hope you can join us.

We're following this absolute awful news coming in from Ft. Hood with you all. Thoughts and prayers are pouring in from across the country to the soldiers and their families effected, and the US Army at Fort Hood in Texas. My heart goes out to them all.

All we can do is pray and keep them in our thoughts. The only word that comes to my mind right now is "Why?" Just why...

Viewed the video.  Very sad.
Unfortunately, working late.
Will miss the live broadcast.
But, my friends will phone / text to update.
What a terrible terrible day for Texas and the United States tonight. My heart is with the families of the lost. With that being said I wish the President could be a bit more classy and not give SHOUT OUTS at a press confrence that was to notify the the nation of a terrible act at Fort Hood.
Brian:

Prayers for those murdered and wounded today at the base in Texas. What a horrific loss for the families and our country. I also wanted to comment on the story about Wall Street firms getting H1N1 shots when there are so many shortages to us "regular" folks.  If the government does this kind of thing with something like one simple flu shot, imagine what will happen if they implement government run healthcare!  Threats of "killing grandma" and/or "Death squad" healthcare suddenly doesn't sound so far fetched now, does it?
Is it any wonder why our boys crack under the strain of going back and forth to a war zone.  One tour of duty is enough.  How much can they take?  If we don't have enough soldiers, either get more or don't start the war.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Such an extremely tragic day. The shootings at Fort Hood are horrible and unimagineable. My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of those killed and injured. The report by Mr.Miklasweski showed that apparently there was only one shooter and Army Major named Nadal Malik Hasan who was supposedly to be deployed soon and was upset about the deployment. Although two other suspects are in custody. Seeing the ambulances, hearing the sirens going off told of how chaotic the scene and the people getting treated outside on the grounds by medics.
The report by Jade Mingus from Fort Hood really spoke of families worried if the soldiers were safe. It certainly is a large community built around Fort Hood and learning this base has sent more soldiers to Iraq and Afghanistan than any other base is quite significant. All these soldiers have made the great sacrifice to bravely serve our country and to have something horrible like this happen is just awful.
As General Barry McCaffrey stated it is the "worst peacetime disaster". This base putting more brigades overseas since the beginnings of the wars. It is unbelievable something like this could possibly happen.
The report by Mr.Taibbi showed the massive size of Fort Hood and how large the population. Thousands of soldiers operating out of Fort Hood since World War II. Certainly many brave soldiers came from Fort Hood among many other bases across the nation.

One always asks the question of why this happened and maybe the investigators will soon learn of a motive.

Again, My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to all the families affected by these terrible shootings.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All.

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always.
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard.
XOXO
My thoughts and prayers are with everyone at Fort Hood! Isn't this the home of viper Co. from the "Tip of the Spear" series? OMG! to go through what they did in Afghanistan and then to come home to this!!
Well thank you very much for pointing out to our enemies exactly where Ft. Hood is and telling them all about the military and civilian personal there. You idiots!! Right up there with Geraldo aren't you? Do you hate America so much that you have to give terrorists another target? Not every detail needs to be broadcast.
look at the shooter and killers last name. we probably killed some of his family members and was too afraid to say anything. meaning iraq, etc...thats what we get for letting these people come into our country at anytime. we are hated and will always be. the hate goes way back with these people. just read up on it.  it is breaking my heart and i am going to pray for the injured and their families.
I think it is incredible that during the entire story on the Fort Hood tragedy you never once mentioned that the shooter was a Moslem even though you expressed puzzlement several times about possible motives.  Either this was an incredible case of flawed reporting or a deliberate attempt to hide this important fact bearing on possible motives.  If it was the second, did you really think that you would be successful?  The name alone raises the question of religion and you didn't really think the other news media would overlook this information did you?  CBS, for example, had already discussed the question of whether the shooter was a convert or a born Moslem before you even came on the air in our area.  I am very disappointed in NBC on this matter.
Please call Army installations POSTS, not bases.  All the other services are bases.  Thanks from an Army Wife of 26 years.
God comfort the Troops, the great civilians, and all of their families tonight. May this never happen again.
Thank you for covering this with accuracy, respect, and sensitivity.
Evening, Brian.

All of us are deeply saddened  by today's devastating news from Fort Story military base in Texas. It sent chills down my spine, and I felt my heart drop, not only from hearing that the man who did this was once from our area, but just as this story unfolding has brought back horrific memories of the Virginia Tech shooting, we learn he is connected to that place where (before today's tragedy) the most recent domestic massacre occurred just two years ago. It is all too familiar... I cannot express enough my deep sorrow for the enormous loss of life we have seen today. It's left all of us with one short, prominent question: “Why?” The only question any of us could think of after the massacre at Virginia Tech, and the only question that comes to mind whenever we see these senseless  We have lost so many brave soldiers today. All we can do is pray, donate blood, and hope for things like this to never happen again. I pray that those wounded recover well and quick. All of the soldiers, and the families of, are in my deepest thoughts and prayers.

As hard as it is tonight to transition my mood to a lighter one, I had planned to say congratulations to you for the New York Yankees World Series win last night. I watched all night long, but wouldn't you know, I fell asleep just 45 minutes before their victory. Very happy for the Yankees, and happy for you, Matt Lauer, and of course...Willie Geist. It really was an amazing series this year. I also look forward to seeing your appearance on 30 Rock airing tonight. It will without a doubt bring us smiles and laughter.

This, one of my most cherished speeches from RFK, came to mind today watching this story unfold:

“...They are, most important of all, human beings whom other human beings loved and needed. No one - no matter where he lives or what he does - can be certain who will suffer from some senseless act of bloodshed. And yet it goes on and on and on in this country of ours.
Why? What has violence ever accomplished? What has it ever created? No martyr's cause has ever been stilled by an assassin's bullet.
No wrongs have ever been righted by riots and civil disorders. A sniper is only a coward, not a hero; and an uncontrolled, uncontrollable mob is only the voice of madness, not the voice of reason.
….
Our lives on this planet are too short and the work to be done too great to let this spirit flourish any longer in our land. Of course we cannot vanquish it with a program, nor with a resolution.
But we can perhaps remember, if only for a time, that those who live with us are our brothers, that they share with us the same short moment of life; that they seek, as do we, nothing but the chance to live out their lives in purpose and in happiness, winning what satisfaction and fulfillment they can.
Surely, this bond of common faith, this bond of common goal, can begin to teach us something. Surely, we can learn, at least, to look at those around us as fellow men, and surely we can begin to work a little harder to bind up the wounds among us and to become in our own hearts brothers and countrymen once again.”

God bless our United States Military, and the United States Army at Fort Hood. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Thank you all at NBC News for your excellent reporting on this tragic day. Also, great work from the NBC affiliate KCEN-TV. Thank you all.
Goodnight,

Dear Mr. Williams.
what is the name of the senator who was in the boating accident, and as a result advocates for others with disabilities? I have a disability myself, but only caught the last few minutes of the story.... where is the link to her story I am very interested in the work the senator is doing. I appreciate your time and attention and await your response. thank you.
The events at Fort Hood are bad enough without commentators referring to the scene as "chaos". Our military has one of the best emergency response systems in the world.  The type of incident at Fort Hood is the type of scene military police and medics are trained to respond to. You have seasoned reporters using a word which impies lack of control, mayhem and disorder. This unwarrented dig at how our military responds to a crisis at a time when we are at war is insulting to all our miliary.
Brian to many this is a shock but to the Military Families it's not. I've seen the pain and suffering of our soldiers who have come home and those who had to stay because of STOP LOCK. My daughter changed as I watched a funny happy person withdrawn. I asked her to see a doctor she said soldiers aren't weak and don't need doctors. I finally got her to she one and she was allowed to release the horror she had lived during her tour of Afghanistan and Iraq. I had to buy her a bullet proof vest and saw how deducted from her pay check was food and cleaning of her clothes plus uniforms. Lies and more lies over 8 years while bumber stickers read " We Support Our Troops". Walter Reed wasn't the only problem but no one bothered to report the truth. First Lady Michelle Obama is getting the truth by talking directly to the Families. We have homeless and jobless soldiers who have returned home. For 8 years thousands of soldiers bodies come home in the dark of the night without anyone knowing who they were. Bush got up to honor them home, but when President Obama showed the respect of honor of our fallen soldiers, he was attacked.
The Wars will end when President Obama announces the US DRAFT is open. Not one Law Maker or War supporter will allow their child to go to Afghanistan and Iraq but have no problem sending others. Sentor Coburn is currently blocking benefits to Vets while nothing is reported in the news. Our troops are short on supplies while the Pentagon spends the money on Contractors and pay offs. Even Afghan President Karzai and his brother are paid well with taxpayers money. If the American people really knew the truth it would rock this country. All this will most likely be charged to Obama/Biden as most act as if Bush/Cheney didn't start these Wars or put us in a Recession.

Have a great evening and pray for our soldiers
by the looks of his name i think he was probably teased  alot and i bet he finally snapped ...i mean come on he was probably on his way to kill some of his cousins over there ..i dont know ...really sad ...really sad ....I VOTE THAT MUSLIMS SHOULD NOT HAVE GUNS !!
It is very scary to think that this person was recently promoted while his pysche was obviously wrought with terror.
Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of HHS, recently said 4 of the 5 H1N1 vaccine manufacturing plants are located outside of the U.S. and pointed out our venerability due to dependence on foreign suppliers.

I was wondering if the home countries to the 4 manufacturing plants are having an H1N1 shortage?  Also wondering how the U.S. has gotten herself into such a dire situation?

Any help from the Investigative Arm of NBC News for answers?
Hi Brian:

Thank you so much for staying with us on the West Coast to bring us the latest on the tragedy at Fort Hood.  How devestating and tragic were the events at Fort Hood Today, and at the handss of an Army Major doctor.  This man was the nab that was helping our troops to cope with the stress from what they had to endure being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Yet it apears this man snapped and went on a deadly rampage.  So many, many innocent people were killed and injured by this man and the others that were invovled but know one knows why.  I'm not sure that any one will really be able to undertand this brutal killing spree but once the investigation is completed we may know what his reasons were for his actions and how taking the livs of these people and injuring them helped his cause.  Our prayers go out to all the families and friends of those that were killed and injured.

There are so many people out here that need health insurance.  So many are without it and they are without help for their illnesses.  This is sad.  Our Country is the best but we cannot get our acts together and pass a bill that will take care of our people.  I agree that this may not be the perfect bill but at least it is something to start with.  I am glad to hear that the President is going to Capitol Hill tomorrow to speak with those that have concerns and questions about the bill.  The endorsement from AARP and the AMA is a strong signal that we need something and soon.  I hope they are being listened to.

Brian again thanks for staying with us here on the West Coast, it is so very appreciated when you do this.  I hope the rest of your evening is a great one.   Also on a little lighter note, what a great tie tonight.

our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the wounded and fallen. My 20yr. old son is stationed at Ft. Hood and happened to be working in the area of the shooting, thank God he was released early. He called to let us know he was okay. This is a horrible thing for these families and soldiers to go through.
Various disturbing facts are coming out about the shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, and his world views.  He got poor performance reports at his last post.  He posted Internet comments equating suicide bombers to soldier heroes who throw themselves on a grenade to protect their fellow soldiers.  He argued frequently against coworkers who were in favor of U.S. involvement in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Were all of these warning signs shoved under the carpet in order to avoid possibly offending some Muslim sentiments or to avoid the appearance of stereotyping?  Political correctness be damned, what ever happened to "erring on the side of caution."
Brian,
A terrible tragedy at Fort Hood,
shocking.  As President Obama said,
we must all recognize the scope of
this tragedy.  It's beyond my understand-
ing.

On a lighter note, you stole the
scene from Tina Fey (3rd Rock), and
you were the best in the audition.

Phyllis
My heart goes out to the victim and shooter. I got out in 2003 and know that it's rough being deployed back to back. Everybody has a weapon and the stress level gets exhassperated to the 10th power. I think this guy was stressed to the max, fearful of co-workers and couldn't handle all of the deciet going on around him. Because I'm a former soldier, when I hear certain things being said on tv, speaking from experience, i smell and hear nothing but a cover up.
“I hate the sound and smell of war.” –
This coming from an injured soldier returning home from Iraq. The pleas are everywhere.

Did anyone catch the Today Show?
It was a glimmer of sunshine.
The "Today" staff was punked.
Al Roker’s expression says it all.
Brian, great job.
Gladiator costumes ?! – Too Funny.
My condolence to the folks in Texas.

While NBC and other news sources stay politicaly correct as to reference to the Muslims look at the current stats. 9-11--3,000 + killed by Muslims--11-5 31 wounded and currently 13 dead on a milritary base no less! Amreicans -O How much more do you thing Americans should take with you guys holding back the truth> Not only do we have the fox locked in the hen house we have the main culprit (Muslim) in our white house. Its time to call a spade a spade.
I was a sarge in the Vietnam War.  Officers are under a lot of pressure, have to make rank, jockey for position, etc., just like in the business world.  Plus they almost always screw up.  This was bound to happen considering the number of Muslims in the military.  Somebody dropped the ball.

Hi Brian,

I don't know if anyone will find all of the answers as to what happened at Fort Hood, at least any time soon. It incomprehensible that any soldier would turn on a fellow soldier, but for a soldier who was a mental health specialist, and to kill thirteen and to injure thirty...there were signs that Nadan Hasan needed to be looked at more closely. He was lucky that he got a full education and wasn't sent over there sooner. He wasn't any more special than any other soldier, but obviously he didn't need to be in Iraq or anywhere near soldiers, or anyone for that matter. People really can't focus on the fact that he was muslim. There have been other home grown terrorists from different backgrounds. What really disturbs me is that there's only one mental health professional for every seven hundred soldiers. I hope I got that right. But then I wish that wasn't the case. There are so many soldiers in Iraq and Afganistan who are sent back out there, are no longer fit and need to come home. As I wrote earlier, there are so many questions and hopefully the military can take a closer look at what't going on here and over there.

Brian, you didn't have time to mention this which is very understanding, given the news of yesterday. But Pres. Obama did have a chance to meet with the leaders that represented five hundred sixty four American Indian tribes. They met at Internal Affairs. Earlier in the day, the President was able to take questions, and then the tribal leaders had accesss to members of his cabinet. It was extremely informative. I read the transcripts and here's the link for those who want to read them:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/11/05/AR2009110502365.html

The statistics are amazing to say the very least and Pres. Obama knows what needs to take place. This kind of meeting hasn't happened since 1994, and never of this magnitude. I'd really just like people to take a look at the numbers. American Indians have heard so amy promises that have never been kept, but this time the outcome may be very different.

Brian, it was a great World Series because we had the best two teams that have ever played, in my opinion. I'm glad the Yankees won, but the Phillies are amazing too. I'd like to see nothing more from baseball than those two teams playing against each other.

I look forward to your broadcast tonight. There's so much going on, and hopefully you can have an hour long broadcast someday.
We've noticed that NBC News was completely off in pc la la land last night by it's purposeful hiding the fact that the military gunman perp was a devout Moslem who had a checkered history in our military, and who held a traditionally liberal job as a mental health professional.  NBC holds itself hostage to it's pc rulers, rendering NBC no more a news organization than it's lapdog status that NBC's accusers claim it to be.  The say NBC merely rehashes properly pre-chewed pablum which it's viewers already want to hear, and nothing more.  Brian Williams is clearly more talented than this.  Brian's considerable and warm-hearted talent is being seriously undermined, since so many people are leaving MSM these days to hear real news and information.
I don't care what your reason is... there is no reasonable or justifiable excuse to shoot innocent people.  WTH is there a muslim high ranking official in our military for?  Are you kidding me?  If I'm a Potestant, do you think I could hold a high office in the arab countries?  I think our right to be safe is a little more important, than their right not to be discriminated against.  I think we should discriminate against any entity that believes it is ok to kill.
I WATCHED THE FT HOOD MASSACRE ON ABC W/C. GIBSON & NBC NEWS w/ B. WILLIAMS. ABC MENTIONED THE SHOOTER AS A MUSLIM SEVERAL TIMES. NBC DID NOT REPORTED IT AT ALL. YOU ARE CARRYING POLITICAL CORRECTNESS TO AN EXTREME. AS THE STORY UNFOLDS YOU WILL SEE THAT BEING A MUSLIM WAS THE PRIMARY REASON FOR THE SHOOTER'S DECISION TO KILL USA SOLDIERS. YOUR VIEWERS AREN'T STUPID. REPORT THE FACTS. THAT'S HOW YOU KEEP YOUR VIEWERS. I HAVE BEEN WATCHING NBC SINCE HUNTLEY AND BRINKLEY. DON'T DRIVE ME AWAY WITH YOUR IDEOLOGY.
Hi All:

Just want to thank everyone for the support of the Afghan girls and boys.     I feel good things when I see the girls and boys so happy.

I am reading The Economist at lunch here and I am horrified of the photo.  It is a little girls age 11 looking at her new husband for the first time.  He looks about 50.  They report about 60% of the girls are married off before they reach the legal age of 16 in Afghanistan.   The custom immediately removes young girls from eduation, contributing to an illiteracy rate of 80% among Afghan women.     Pregnancies among 10 to 14 year old girls contribution to the country's high incidence of maternal mortality.

Needless to say they didn't mention psychological issues and the health issues.    Maybe this orphanage can keep these young girls and boys together living like brothers and sisters in a free society.

Let's keep praying for the survivors and their families at Fort Hood.   Let's us pray the media (blogs, cable and network) give these folks time to grieve before they start putting cameras and microphones at their door steps.    It will be a long, long road to recovery for all involved.

I have said this before and I will say it again.   Please do not be a bystander.   It is the moral responsibility of conscious people to be leaders and not close their doors to things that don't seem right.

If you think someone is in trouble, please extend the gift of friendship and offer to help.   If you suspect illegal activity or fraud or something just strange, please report these issues to your authorities.

On a final note, this is a very, very friendly place.  I enjoy my time here with everyone.  Ladies and gentlemen please be very cautious on your blog and Twitter posts.     Please protect your personal identities when blogging and twittering all the the such.

There are some younger folks here. Yes, I could be your Mom or your boss but please, please be safe and consider removing your last names and locations.   Some of you will want jobs one day and yes, I do check the internet for posts when hiring.    That's all I will say as I want the best for all of you including your personal safety.   Read between the lines here folks.

Peace and love to all!
This was an act of terrorism, carefully planned obviously for some time. This should not be downplayed as a random act of violence, it was an attack against America. He should be tried and sentanced to death, this is a time of war. Isnt that still called treason?Remember 9/11? Our prayers go out to all the soldiers dead and wounded and there families. God bless America.

We need to have more stories about the people in need in our own country! Too many doing without here in the USA!!!!!
This is a tremendous tragedy for our brave military here on our own soil.  For years the radical muslims have infiltrated our country's borders, our military and even our government. Our own president had very little to say about it and to me was some what dismissive of the event.  It would not be a surprise to me if Barack Obama awarded this killer a siver star and demanded he be burried at Arlington Cemetary!
Bryan: I feel strongly that the media should report the news, however, I am begining to wonder if the two and three hour minute by minute circus like reporting of situations. such as the Ft Hood shooting don't tend to to result in other incidences such as the Orlando one the following day. Further, this blocks important "ordinary" news that would have been broadcast.
Last night Jim Miklaszewski, in describing video of the shooting a Fort Hood, said we were seeing images of Fort Hood in chaos.  He may have even said complete chaos.  That was an absurd description.

Up front, I will identify myself as someone with no military connections as well as someone who opposes war.  So I am not "just defending" the military.  But to describe what we were seeing as chaos was a gross exaggeration.   Chaos = a state of utter confusion or disorder; a total lack of organization or order. What a statement about the American military! One lone gunman on the largest U.S. military base is able to incite chaos. All murder, as well as all war, is a tragedy. Jim Miklaszewski's sensationalistic language was unnecessary and degrading.

I often think that the language used by media reporters is a bit over the top.  This is the first time that I have thought it so ridiculous that I had to write a comment.
The news report by Mr.Miklasweski acknowledged the fact Nadal Malik Hasan was an extremist.  Then the report stated Nadal Malik Hasan's point of view through a family member.  The family member stated that the extremist was picked on because he was a Muslim.  Did you ask those that were shot if they harassed this man?  This would have made the story more objective.  Obviously, a person who would murder has a warped since of reality.  The victims are those Nadal Malik Hasan shot, right?  In contrast, the story implies the dead and injured harassed the murderer.  This was unfounded and insulting to the dead, those that were shot, family and friends and all Americans.
Could the horrible tragedy at Ft.Hood, been the work of a "sleeper cell"? Some where down the line, could Nidal Malik Hasan, have been "programmed" to act out the way he did?
There is one casualty of this tragedy that we are not recognizing.  Pvt. Velez was pregnant.  The number of lives lost is really 14 not 13!  We need prayers for this soul also.

Rich Hardt
Over the last eleven years I've had the pleasure of visiting Fort Hood several times, and was impressed by the quality of the soldiers there. Nidal Malik Hasan never was or could be a soldier; he was a parasite. If allowed to remain in the never never land which is the nation's capital, we never would have heard his name. Who was responsible for his deployment to Fort Hood? Sincerely, Robert A. Kehl
I watched the entire NBC broadcast about the Ft. Hood shootings last Thursday, and NOT ONCE did you mention the already verified fact that the shooter was a Muslim. Have you completely caved in to political correctness? This was a VERY salient fact that you irresponsibly withheld from your viewers. Shame on you for such poor journalism.
okay folks enough! As a theology major in college we have an assignment to do a thesis on a religion other than our own, several, SEVERAL of my fellow brothers and I,choice to do it on the ISLAM faith,[oh no], does this make us converts because we are texting and emailing religious leaders here and abroad, I think not, so because someone choices to email or telephone others does not say they have turn radical. they are reasons for someone who commits such an act as this, which we may never know, but please stop with the "CROWD" enticing and be realistic, be prayerful for ALL involved, we are christians by the love of one man who told us 'HE WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE", which unles you are GOD you better not pick up a stone, know what I mean?
Praying for them and the whole country.
Anyone out there in Lah-lah land figure out yet that the real story is "The total failure of the Patriot Act". Solution: - spy even more upon me and the rest of the American Citizens instead of taking cues from obvious bad guys.
