Afghanistan decision

The White House is reacting to a new development in Afghanistan today that could affect how and when it decides whether to commit more American troops to the war. President Hamid Karzai's election rival, Abdullah Abdullah, is now expected to drop out of a runoff election as soon as tomorrow.

Whether he does it gracefully, or in effect boycotts what he has previously labeled a fraudulent election process, is the burning question. Clearly Washington would like to remove any stain of illegitimacy from the election before deepening American involvement in the conflict. Our Richard Engel is in Kabul and will bring us the latest from there. We'll also get the early reaction from the White House.

We're also covering an unsettling discovery at the home of a convicted rapist in Cleveland.

That case of a Northwest Airlines crew who overflew their destination last week has stirred up discussion about fatigue in the cockpit. Ron Allen looks into the problem.

And by the way, for those of you who watched TODAY this morning, I can promise there will be no encore tonight to our little Halloween musical (ok, lip-syncing) performance. It will be suit and tie the whole way this evening. I hope you'll join me for Nightly News, and in the meantime have a safe and enjoyable Halloween night.

Good Evening Mr.Holt, Great to have a Saturday broadcast of Nightly News! Woo! Hoo! And with Richard on the broadcast is even better! Always wonderful to see Richard!! The sudden news that Abdullah Abdullah might be dropping out of the run-off election against Hamid Karzai will certainly have a huge effect on the Afghanistan government and how this region moves forward as well as the issue of sending more US troops to the region. One really hopes there will be a peaceful resolution.
On another note Mr.Holt you did a fantastic performance this morning on Weekend Today! Great Job! Suit and tie for Nightly News is best!
Looking forward to the broadcast!
Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!

Good Evening Mr.Holt, Another fine broadcast this evening! Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast. PLEASE STAY EXTRA,EXTRA SAFE ALWAYS RICHARD. Now on to the broadcast. First of all Richard's report from Kabul concerning the Afghanistan run-off elections. The sudden annoucement by opponent Abdullah Abdullah about dropping out of the election is certainly crucial to the future of the Afghanistan Government and the decision by President Obama to send more US troops to the region. Abdullah Abdullah backing out of the race would assure Hamid Karzai another 8year term of office and give the United States the answer as to who we would be dealing with as the leader of the region. Abdullah Abdullah dropping out would save the region from another flawed election because there could be a chance of more cheating in this election. Abdullah Abdullah could be playing a game with his decision, but more will be learned tomorrow. Time will tell.
Excellent Reporting as Always Richard!
The report by Mr.Viqueira from the White House showed President Obama is not going to make any decision about US troops levels right now or at least before November 11th. One only hopes the troops will come home soon.
The report by Mr.Taibbi about the swine flu outbreak and the available vaccine showed how doctors are becoming very frustrated with the number of doses available for their patients.v The number of deaths is staggering and especially tragic the number of children dying of the virus. One hopes that vaccine doses will become available soon especially for people at high risk.
On another note the report by Mr.Costello about pilot fatigue showed that pilots are working too long hours with very little sleep leaving them exhausted to fly an airplane. So many delays and turnaround times is seems impossible for them to recive adequate rest. New standards need to be in place and prevent future accidents due to lack of sleep.
Looks like the White House is bustling with Halloween Trick of Treaters! Alot of cute costumes! I hope all have a great time!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt! Happy Halloween to You! Always great to see Richard on the broadcast!
Peace to You and to All!

Lester,
Another brilliant broadcast!!!  I was
in Barnes & Noble Friday afternoon and
saw a Washington magazine that more
troops should be sent to Afghanistan
but according to another expert Pakistan
is the problem.  Since it is the
president's decision, he must first
know who he is dealing with and the
situation with the election complicates
things and then there is the fact that
a situation can turn on a dime, so
one never knows how a situation will
end.

Two thousand kids at the White House
Imagine that.  Our next door neighbors,
who are in their late 30's have scared
off the trick or treaters in our
cul-de-sac.  Last year she told them
that their family did not worship the
devil and she was serious.  I don't
know why she did not tell them they
did not participate instead of all
that crazy talk.  Our stockbroker and
his family have a Halloween party and
he won 1st place for a 40's hippy.
I did not know there were hippies in
The Great Generation or how they dressed.
I tuned in to The Today Show this morning
and I must say you are a Master of
Disguise.

On the subject of same-sex marriage,
I am against it and would not vote for
it.  However, the case was made for
the right under the Constituion, and,
of course, that would be a consideration
with some and get their vote.

The story about the Chandlers unnerved
me.  And I hope all goes well with
the couple.

My husband was watching a ballgame,
and in the intermission, a sign,
Louisville is obscene.  No further
comment, so I don't know what that
was all about.  I'll stay tuned.

Happy Halloween!

Phyllis
I am still laughing over the morning performance.  It was great.
Hi Richard! me again! i'm so happy and relieved you're safe! and am so looking forward to your safe return home! the words be and stay extra safe cannot be stressed or said nearly enough and i know i said this last night but i'll say it again you will always be in the hearts, minds, prayers, love and support of not only me but so many others all over and across our nation in every part of the U.S. and as i said before, when you get home, please try to find and take time for you! to take special very care of yourself.

11/1/09 Sunday
Lester,
I tuned in to The Today Show this
morning and liked the story about
American Airlines, and you following
the luggage.  You not only work on
the weekends, but you work the ramp.
Were you really flying in the belly
of the plane?

Bacon in chocolate?  I'll have to
give it a whirl..

I especially liked the grey suit and
tie; very attractive.

Have a nice day!!!
Phyllis
