Covering a changing war

Brian Williams and I both anchor tonight's broadcast--he from Afghanistan, me in New York -- and this as the number of U.S. troop deaths in Afghanistan reached 55 for the month of October, the highest in one month since the war began eight years ago. That's because today, bombs killed eight more troops.

And, just as alarming, is another reason why the toll is up: Experts say the Taliban now has bigger bombs and more powerful IEDs--more evidence the war is changing as the enemy becomes more radicalized.

Also tonight, we make sense of the confusion over where people can get H1N1 flu shots, the anger that boiled over in Chicago at banks lobbying against financial reforms, and get this: there is now a Broadway stage production of 101 Dalmatians--with real dogs.

The chuckling around Nightly News is over the fact that the correspondent who will bring us this story is Kevin Tibbles -- so do not be surprised if you see a graphic long desired by some among our ranks: "Tibbles 'n Bits."

Oh help!

See you tonight.

Hi, Ann.

Today's news from Afghanistan is absolutely staggering. After this, and the news we heard just yesterday, I keep thinking things can only get better at this point in Afghanistan. My heart goes out to all of the heroes we've lost this week, their families, and the ones who fight along their side. God bless them all, and keep them safe.

We're all praying for Brian and Richard (and all of the crew) and keeping them in our thoughts as they report from the Afghanistan region.

I have to say, Kevin Tibbles is one of my favorite Nightly News correspondents, and I wouldn't be surprised to see you guys with the “Kibbles 'n Bit's” graphic. We'll just wait and see!

Can't wait to see you and Brian soon.

The protesters in Chicago against the bankers looked like "ASTROTURF" to me with the professional signs and all. I do not think I heard you mention that. Oh! they were probably from SEIU and ACORN.
Good Evening Ann, Another fine broadcast this evening splitting the duty of the broadcast with you in New York and Mr.Williams reporting from Afghanistan. Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast! First of all Richard's report from Kabul and a deadly day of violence with eight US soldiers killed by IED's. As Richard stated the violence has reached record levels and the militants are using more complex, better and bigger bombs to attack the troops. The taliban gaining strength due to these bigger bombs and with more US troops on the ground. It is awful to learn this October is the deadliest month since the war began in the region. One really hopes someday this terrible violence will cease.
The report by Mr.Williams from Eastern Afghanistan showed how the Afghan Army is really trying the help the civilians by handing out humanitarian aid. Seeing the people lining up for some bags of food was promising and encouraging for the US troops. The US troops getting to know the people in the area to find out what they need and step back to let the Afgan Forces do their part. Certainly as Mr.Williams stated much calmer than last year at this time, yet always under the watchful eye of armed forces.
Excellent Reporting As Always Richard!
Excellent Reporting Always Mr.Williams!
PLEASE STAY EXTRA,EXTRA SAFE ALWAYS RICHARD!
PLEASE STAY EXTRA,EXTRA SAFE ALWAYS MR.WILLIAMS!

On another note the report by Mr.Costello concerning the pilots of Northwest Airlines Flight 188 simply showed how these two pilots were not doing their job and failed to operate the plane in a safe manner. Revoking their pilot's licenses is the most severe measure and they should have them revoked. The two pilots have now ruined their careers as pilots.

The report by Mr.Bazell about the swine flu vaccine certainly proved long lines are all across the nation for people needing the vaccine. Hopefully, all those at high risk will be able to receive the vaccine. It was good the President's daughter's have been vaccinated. Ans hopefully, more doses of vaccine aill arrive in the coming weeks.
The piece by Mr.Tibbles about the dalmations in the stage production of "101 Dalmations" was really nice. It was wonderful the dalmations were rescued from shelters and are now living a pampered life while on the road wit the show. They really are well trained and have alot of talent which must be fun for the actors. Having their moments in the spotlight! Very Cute Piece!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams! Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
STAY EXTRA,EXTRA SAFE AND WELL RICHARD!
STAY EXTRA,EXTRA SAFE AND WELL MR.WILLIAMS!
I keep both of you in my prayers for your safety in the region! And your safe return home!
XOXO

Ann,
It seems to me that President Obama
could do something about this credit
card situtation as all of us are hurting
in spite of our best efforts.  February
is not good enough.  If we do not
get ahead of it in 2009, we're in
trouble.

You looked very pretty and professional
this evening.

I sent Brian an e-mail as well.

Hi Ann,

I'm so glad that the dalmations have been rescued and can shine on stage. I could see that they were having a lot of fun as well as giving the audience a wonderful gift while performing. Most dogs and other animals with give their all, especially when given a second chance. It must be amazing to see the show in person. I hope they continue to have success and raise a lot of money for the other dalmations.

See you tomorrow night.
It appears that sycophancy runs rampant on this blog. Mr. Williams' extreme reverence for our military distorts the reality that is happening in Iraq and Afghanistan. There is nothing the military can do to "win hearts and minds" in those countries. The citizens of those countries resent our continued occupation of their land, and won't be mollified until we're gone. Glenn Greenwald at Salon.com has a posting today (Wednesday, 10/28, in case this doesn't get posted for several days, as usual) which discusses an OpEd from a former Russian soldier who was in Afghanistan during their occupation of that sad country during the late 80s, and who believed that the reasons for their mission there were very similar to what we're told to believe are ours now. The propaganda's the same, but the occupiers have changed. Brian, a more skeptical view of the military and the government are warranted on your part, unless, of course, your high salary is what keeps you loyal to the powers-that-be.

The bias so apparent at NBC and MSNBC is turning me off and I know that I am not alone. It is time for NBC to regain its leadership and responsibility in reporting the news, the real news, without continuing as the propaganda arm of the Obama adminiustration. This administration is anti - American and is bent on the destruction of our way of life. The press is falling down on the job. NBC and MSNBC are leading the way.

NBC needs to return to the realm of those with journalistic integrity and expose the perfidy, the lies of the Obamaistas.
