David Rohde: Moderates do exist in Afghanistan

Yours truly in for Brian Williams tonight on this very tough day for Americans in Afghanistan. Fourteen people died, including some civilians, in two separate helicopter crashes--the worst during a raid on drug traffickers. Remember, the Taliban is funding their war with drug money. A firefight is reported, but the military says its preliminary investigation finds the helicopter was not shot down.

As our NBC News team just happened to videotape the troops on the mission earlier, our challenge now is to make sure these images are used informatively, and yet respectfully, given the loss of life. This is the kind of ethical dilemma that happens behind the scenes that can rip your heart out.

We have the first interview with New York Times reporter David Rohde on the broadcast tonight, in which he describes his recent, daring escape from the Taliban after seven months of captivity in the tribal areas, where presumably Osama Bin Laden is holed up.  Scary place for Americans, and Rohde's story is something out of a movie.  The crazy thing is, Google Earth can zero in on the exact area where he was held hostage.

Rohde also said something quite interesting as we think about the way forward in Afghanistan.

DAVID ROHDE: "I saw the contradiction that exists in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.  You know, one Afghan lied to me and kidnapped me.  Another Afghan, you know, helped me escape.  So, it's--it's really a question of sorting through the complexities.  And backing the right Afghans.  But there are courageous Afghans and Pakistanis who--who are fighting the Taliban. And want to help us fight the Taliban.

NBC News: So, it is on them, then, that the U.S. would have to rely to win?

DAVID ROHDE:  Yes.  It's finding more effective ways to back moderate Afghans and Pakistanis.  They exist.  And we have to find better ways to help them.

This, it would seem, hits the administration's dilemma square on the head, as it weighs the war strategy there.

On that point, President Obama talked about the crash and said he "will never rush" choosing whether to send US troops to war, referring to his upcoming decision about whether to send additional troops to Afghanistan.

There is other news, including new information about what those two Northwest Airlines pilots say they were doing in the cockpit that caused them to miss landing at the Minneapolis airport; what's taking so long for the swine flu vaccine to become more widely available; and a cool story about a dentist working to organize free dental care for children around the country.

As a girl raised poor enough to not always get to go to the dentist when she had a toothache, I am pretty glad about that.

See you tonight.

Ann,all children should be able to see a dentist and have medical care. That's why we should pass Health Care reform with a Public Option. Anything less than that would just be like doing nothing.
Good Evening Ann, Nice to see you this evening filling in for Mr.Williams who is on his way to Afghanistan to report the rest of the week. Always great to see Richard on the broadcast! PLEASE STAY EXTRA,EXTRA SAFE ALWAYS RICHARD!! Now on to the broadcast. First of all Richard's report from Kabul about the two deadly crashes of helicopters in Southern and Western Afghanistan killing 14 US soldiers. As Richard's report showed the Afgan and US troops launched a mission to bring an air assauly on drug traffickers and became engaged in heavy assault by militants. It is a risky mission, but using helicopters is a main source if transport. It was really very tragic to learn of the two helicopters that collided in Southern Afghanistan which was not due to enemy fire. Yet, as Richard stated this will not slow down and of the US Military operations in the region. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of the fallen soldiers.
Excellent Reporting as Always Richard!
PLEASE STAY EXTRA,EXTRA SAFE ALWAYS!
The report by Mr.Aspell concerning the two suicide bombings in Baghdad with around 155 killed showed how this region is still extremely volatile and the insurgents remain active in attempting to destroy the security and the government. The Iraqi Government is being blamed by those in the region for the lack of security and asking how these two buses packed with explosives were able to get passed the checkpoints. Simply horrible around 20 children were among those killed. One hopes so much the region would be free of this terrible violence, yet it seems never ending. One hopes so much for peace.
On another note the report by Mr.Bazell about the swine flu vaccine availibilty showed the amount of doses is not meeting the demand of the public. The long lines all across the nation prove that people want to make sure they are vaccinated, but cannot always get it. It is definitely a slow process and hopefully as the weeks progress there will be more doses available.
The interview you held with David Rohde of the New York Times who was kidnapped by the taliban and was able to escape was quite interesting. His telling of the night he escaped told of great risk and danger, but he was fortunate to escape without any injury. Finding the Afghans and Pakistanis who fight against the taliban and will help is extremely difficult, but they are in the region. Helping them fight the taliban to find a better path to peace.
The "Making A Difference" segment by Mr.Yang really showed how this program called,"Teamsmile" has helped so many children receive the dental care they need. All the volunteer dentists doing the work for free certainly helps so many people who couldn't afford dental care for their children. These dentists really brought about alot of smiles.

Thank You for the broadcast Ann! Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast. Will look forward to seeing Mr.Williams reporting from the Afghanistan region the rest of the week. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard! Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Mr.Williams.
Always Excellent Reporting Richard!
XOXO
Hi Ann,

Thanks for filling in for Brian. It's always disturbing to hear about any troops and citizens being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the deaths in the countries over the last couple of days are almost too much to fathom. I heard Richard Engel talking earlier today on MSNBC. Evidently he and his crew were waitng to board a helicoptor but they didn't have enough room. I really hope that Richard can come home soon and stay, and have someone take his place. But I think we know Richard's personality by now and there's probably no way he'll come home for good until all of this is over.
I don't think that Pres. Oabama can make any moves until the Afghan election is over. Maybe he's already made most of the decisions and nothing can be discussed right now. I have much more faith in him than I would have if the other presidential candidates had been elected. I'm sure the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were on the voters minds when they cast their ballots. After years of strategy that has basically failed, something besides sending more and more troops has to happen. Not only is our President brilliant but he has surrounded himself with brillaint minds. He isn't self absorbed and doesn't mind asking for help. Thank God he doesn't have a vice president who has an ego like Cheney. I don't thnk Cheney knows the difference between dithering and deliberating. It's a shame when former Pres. Bush can stay out of it, but the former vice president keeps running his mouth. It almost makes me proud of George W. I suppose that's part of the republican strategy though.

The broadcast ended on a beautiful note by seeing the pink ribbon hanging from outside the White House. Hopefully when healthcare has been reformed, every woman can have a regular mammogram. That would be just one of the many benefits.
Also thanks to the "TeamSmile", children from any family income can have their teeth taken care of. I remember the segment Dr. Bill Busch was referring to that inspired him. I'm so glad professionals from all walks of life are helping strangers in any way they can. It's never been more important than in this day and age.

Thanks again, Ann. Have a great evening and week.
Ann you give these stories the respect and compassion they deserve in your presentation.  It's not merely your media knowledge, it's your experience that gives you a natural ability to chart a course through the Nightly News.  You do it so well and effortlessly.  You are MY hero and I hope you inspire others as you have me.  Continued success!
On Sunday's Nightly News story about the H1N1 virus (which they are still calling Swine Flu), John Yang told us that 27 states are short of hospital beds because of the virus.  But the accompanying map only highlighted 26 states.  So which is the super-secret mystery state that Nightly News refused to show?  Perhaps it was the state of carelessness.
Beginning two weeks ago, the TMZ.com website posted three separate videos of Maria Shriver talking on her cell phone while driving, which is illegal in California (where Shriver was at the time).  Virtually every local, national and cable news network ran the story and aired the videos.  But not Nightly News.  Now, this is exactly the type of story Nightly News loves--celebrity gone afoul of the law.  And Shriver is a celebrity in many worlds.  She's a noted journalist, a member of the Kennedy family (and niece of a president), married to a mega-star (Arnold Schwarzenegger), and the First Lady of California.  So why didn't Nightly News run this story?  The answer is obvious.  The story broke just a week before Shriver was to begin her stint as host of the "A Woman's Nation" series on Nightly News.  The producers refused to run her phoning-while-driving story so as not to detract from her upcoming appearances on their broadcast.  Once again, the Nightly News producers allowed self-interest to influence their news coverage.  Shame on them for their Kindergarten Cop-Out.
When was Maria Shriver a noted journalist? I only remember her as a reporter on Entertainment Tonight. That's like saying Mary Hart is a noted journalist. I tried to point that out when "Woman's Nation" (the segments) began, but my comment wasn't posted. As I also wrote, I like Maria Shriver but I don't think she qualifies as the average woman who struggles. I'm sure she and Arnie have always had around the clock help with kids, houses, etc. Exactly what does she do for a career other than being Arnie's wife?

Oh, she got "busted" for illegal parking. But I'm sure the Terminator will handle that swiftly too. I'm just surprised that Maria evens gets a ticket for the kind of driving she's doing. She really need to focus on being able to handle her on personal "Woman's Nation."
Always a pleasure to see Ann Curry.

Regarding the public option, I feel it is the only way to make healthcare reform successful, combined with pulling everyone into the big tent.  A public option will force competition from the private sector who might otherwise make a gentlemen's agreement to raise prices across the board, blaming changes brought about by the reform bill.  Otherwise, the insurance companies have nothing to fear from government-supported insurance, which will not be the choice of the majority of insureds.
Whats so great about her why do you people love her so much?????
