Brian Williams, anchor and managing editor

My thanks to the good folks at NPR's "Wait, Wait...don't tell me" radio program for including me in their taping this week at Carnegie Hall.  The broadcast airs this coming weekend. Anything you hear that doesn't sound like something I'd say...simply isn't me. They have people on the staff who can mimic voices, and you know what these media types can do with editing.  We had a lot of fun.  Growing up as a kid in Jersey, I certainly never thought I'd stand at center stage and look out at the audience at Carnegie Hall.  What an extraordinary experience.  And (as they say in show business) what a great crowd -- this was like the Super Bowl of public radio last night.

We'll update you on goings-on with the broadcast on Monday. In the meantime, have a good evening, and we'll see you Monday night.

Hi Brian,

does this mean you're not going to be on the Fri. nightly news? I wish you could have told us Thur. night. I did have "elective" plans, you know what I mean? Anyway, it's a stay at home Fri. no matter how you look at it. Have a great weekend and I'll watch
your fill in, if that's the case.

Go Yankees!! Try to get on camera if you're at the game.
Hi, Brian.

I'm glad to hear you had a great time with NPR last night. It sounds like something to look forward to -- I'll remember to listen in on it.

I haven't been writing to your blog much this week. It's been a very difficult week, and I've been devoting much of my time to praying and hoping for good news, coming out of our community, and the state of Florida. Of course, I haven't been missing the broadcasts. But stories like these make me wonder how people in your business deal with these painful news stories. As someone who has interests in journalism, I wish I could ask you personally how you keep yourself going while reporting sad news stories. It must take a tole on journalists who have to report it, and I wish I could have a few words of advise or wisdom from someone like you.

On a light note, the end of your post reminds me of an email my professor wrote to our class this week (after being out for nearly two weeks with the flu). I mistakenly thought she meant we didn't have class Wednesday because she said "prepare for Monday". So, like I asked her, do we have (class tomorrow?) a broadcast tonight?

I'll join you soon.

I hope you have a good evening too, and also a good weekend.

While all of us try to remain positive, please say a prayer for Morgan.

Take care,
-Cary
None of my comments ever get posted anymore...  But I bet this one will.

Laurel
Are you having fun with the news again?

If I was Jon Stewart I would be worried about a young upstart such as yourself.

That said, Nightly News could be a bit more lighthearted some nights - i.e., Balloon Boy coverage was a bit too serious when it should have received the Jon Stewart treatment.
Vis a vis swine flu, the high school in my town will be closed on Monday and Tuesday because 42 percent of the study body called out sick today.
Brian,
The only conclusion my husband and I
could come to about the pilots is that
they were talking and just not paying
attention.  A sensational story.

The portrait of the first family is
wonderful and the First Lady is a
beautiful woman

Have a great weekend!!!

Phyllis
Hi again Brian,

I'm glad I misunderstood what you wrote and that you were able to anchor the news.

At first the story of the pilots arguing was a little funny but I wouldn't have wanted to be a passenger or crew member. Thank God they had plenty of fuel and didn't go any further. No matter what the error was, they really should be fired.

I've always enjoyed Hillary Swank's movies. She's not over exposed and she doesn't use her celebrity status as a ticket to fame. In other words, I like her movies more than Julia Roberts' or Jennifer Aniston's. I've also been a big fan of Amelia Earhart as long as I can remember. It's sad that we'll probably never know what ended her life. I think her plane would have been found by now. I personally believe in the theory that she was captured and killed.

The official family portrait of the Obamas was beautiful. I hope the President doesn't have a head full of gray hair in a yr. But I do look forward to pictures of Sasha and Malia as they get older. They're both extremely beautiful.

Brian, I'm just going to level with you. Your new small print striped tie is nice and contemporary, maybe more so than the larger stripes. I'm just sayin'.

Have a beautiful weekend and I'll see you Mon. evening.

Good Evening Mr.Williams, Another fine broadcast this evening. It must have been alot of fun for you to be a part of NPR's "Wait,Wait...don't tell me" radio program. Truly a great experience for you! Now on to the broadcast. First of all the report by Mr.Tibbles about Northwest Airlines Flight 188 flying past the Minneapolis Airport 150miles then having to turn around. It certainly would be cause for alarm seeing as how Air Traffic Controllers tried to make contact 13times then having to get fighter jets ready in case of a terrorist attack. It was good news the Air Traffic Controllers finally made contact, but it does make for something of a mystery as to what actually happened inside the cockpit. It is definitely hard to believe the pilots were so distracted by a discussion of airline policy that they missed the destination airport. Hopefully, the recorders will tell of what was occurring during the time of lost radio contact.

The report by Mr.Bazell about the swine flu outbreak showed how young people at college campuses really have to make sure they stay healthy because of so many reported cases of swine flu across the nation at college campuses. So many children going the the hospital with flu like symptoms and some severe cases being admitted. The vaccine is supposed to be the best defense against the swine flu, but more vaccine doses need to be available to those who really need it.
The report by Mr.Cowan showing the long lines in many States for the vaccine does show people are worried and want to be immunized to keep from getting the virus. Patience is key, but more doses are needed.
The "Making A Difference" segment by Chris Jansing related to the series "A Women's Nation" showed how women who thought there was no hope of being financially independent are finding great help in the program called, "New Economics for Women". This program certainly has changed the lives of many families is being able to have a brighter future for themselves and their children. Getting better places to live and better schools are all a wonderful start for all these families.

The piece by Mr.Alamguer about Amelia Earhart showed how much of an inspiration Amelia was to generatio of women wanting to fly. Still a great mystery as to what happened to her on her attempt to fly around the world. She is still idolized and the movie opening about her life is a wonderful tribute. America's heroine of the skies.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Have a wonderful weekend. Enjoy the New York Giants football game on Sunday Night! I hope they win for your sake!
Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO
I really miss Tim Russert. Have Chuck make the goat-tee disappear. Better yet, just make Chuck disappear.
I always watch the NBC news especially when you're the anchor. Keep the good work!
maya
I will look forward to that, but - where is the Friday broadcast?

I have been watching the show here since I got back from vacation because of an audio issue with my regular viewing setup, and it is quite a boon to be able to do that.

But today I find the As Broadcast link doesn't get me to the newscast for 23 October... I am sad now :/

Are the webmonkeys trying to have a life or a weekend or something?-)
What a week we've had. Cheney and convicted felon Scooter Libby getting awards for their actions over the 8 years that got us in this mess. Just think if Cheney had not dodged the Vietnam War he might have had the a better understanding and respect for the US Military and Foreign Policy. With no word from Bush it's clear Dick Cheney was running the White House Foreign Policy along with Rummy. Karzai has a corrupt Administration so why keep giving them taxpayers money?

Two US States are not effected by the Recession as we see what's important to those citizens. Utah Senator Hatch first concern is getting Utah college in the Bowl Games as he sees that as the citizens concerns.  Senator McCain feels things are going so well in Arizona that his first line of business is getting late Boxer Jack Johnson a pardon. What's strange is Johnson has been dead longer then I've been alive and he would care about it anyway.

Here's a bit of funny news. Fox News Glenn Beck's home town Mayor spent over 17,000 dollars of taxpayers money for a celebration but got less then 10,000 in ticket sales. Many more protesters then those who wanted to celebrate.

I've been following the Health Care discussion and I think States should decide if they want to join in. Some Governor's don't feel the citizens without insurance need it and as for those being denied or overcharged aren't a problem. Just think of those who are grateful for FDR and Johnson to make the lives of those elderly who would not be getting Social Secruity or Medicaide right now. As the seniors listen to the debate with lies flying everywhere, they forget how these problems were attacked and how hard those President fought to make it happen.

Well have a great weekend all and I look forward to the surprises that are to come.
HI Brian

Your broadcast was a great as usual.

It's going to take time for the full investigation into what really happened on the Northwest flight to be completed but once good thing, the pilots had not been drinking.  I can't imagine over shooting the airport.  These pilots had 150 lives in their hands.  One hour with no contact. Didn't anyone even realize that there had been no transmissions coming through.  I'ts baffling but I guess we'll have to wait until the full investigation is complete to find out the answers.  This must have been a horrible experience for the passengers.

It seems that each night the report on the Swine Flu is worse and worse.  The number of children stricken with it is growing rapidly as well as the deaths from it. Now college students are coming down with it. The government needs to help get this vaccine out to the public immediately.  The longer it takes the more it spreads and the threat of more deaths increases.

It was good to hear that home sales were up but also sad because so much of the increase was due to people losing their homes to foreclosure so prices are down so low it allows those with money to buy a home at a low price.  To me this is still a no win situation for most.

The public option is a big issue.  Unfortunately it has to be in any plan that Congress implements,  There are so many people out there with no jobs that can't afford any health care insurance and need a public option.  I hope that this issue can be resolved very soon as a plan for reform needs to be put into place quickly.

Your story on "New" tonight was great.  Women helping women succed to become self-suffient and financially independant is wonderful by giving them the tools  they need to achieve their goal and to care for their families.  Women are strong and can take on just about anything with the proper guidence.  They made a differnce in so many lives.

Whas an awesome feeling (and possibly a little scary) it must have been to find yourself standing on the stage at Carnegie Hall with a live audience in front of you.  I can't wait for NPR's broadcast this weekend.

Thank you so much for sticking with us for the whole week. Have a great fun weekend.  Hopefully you'll start next week with us.
Someone should buy Brian Williams a calendar.  During his intro to Friday's report about next month's elections, Brian said, "Depending on where you live in this country, an important election day is coming up this coming Tuesday..."  Not quite.  This coming Tuesday is Oct. 27.  Election day is a week later, on Nov. 3.  That reminds me of the time George H.W. Bush commemorated the 47th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day on Sept. 7, 1988, three months early.  I only hope that Brian isn't going to be standing in his doorway ready to give out Halloween candy on Oct. 24.
Brian Williams wants to know what viewers think of the "A Woman's Nation" series that aired this week on Nightly News.  Well, here's what I think:  It was a huge waste of time.  It was just filler.  It didn't teach us anything.  The Monday and Tuesday segments consisted of Maria Shriver sitting around a table with a group of people while they talked about themselves.  That's not something that belongs on an evening news broadcast.  The first of Wednesday's two segments featured Savannah Guthrie's interview with Pres. Obama.  His anecdotal thoughts on gender roles were somewhat interesting, but certainly not news.  Wednesday's second "A Woman's Nation" segment about women caregivers spent nearly all its time on the story of one particular woman.  I can't imagine why the Nightly News producers felt that Helen Zabrowski deserved three minutes of network news time.  (But I will say this:  Ms. Zabrowski bears a slight resemblance to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.  Since Nightly News obviously has no intention of covering last month's German elections, viewers watching the segment on Ms. Zabrowski could squint and pretend she was Chancellor Merkel.  That's certainly the closest we'll get to seeing Angela Merkel on Nightly News.)  Thursday's segment was about gender roles in the workplace.  It wasn't particularly enlightening, but it allowed NBC to take care of some important business.  Nearly half the story dealt with Jan Fields, the chief operating officer for McDonald's USA.  She was given the opportunity to talk about McDonald's "world-famous french fries" and to ruminate on what a great place McDonald's is to work.  This was nothing more than a 75 second commercial for McDonald's.  Friday's "A Woman's Nation" (which also doubled as a "Making A Difference" segment) was about Bea Stotzer, who offers financial counseling and other services to Latinas.  It seems like she's doing good work.  But this certainly isn't news.

All together, the six "A Woman's Nation" segments took up more than 20 minutes of Nightly News time.  That's almost the equivalent of an entire broadcast.  Meanwhile, the actual information in those segments could have been explained in less than two minutes.  What an incredible waste of network news time.  Imagine all the real news that Nightly News could have covered in those 20 minutes.  On his Wednesday blog, Brian said that he hopes to address some of the criticisms of the "A Woman's Nation" series.  I would be very interested in hearing that.  But I won't hold my breath.
I just listened to "Wait, Wait, don't tell me" on NPR and Mr. Williams proved to be one of the wittiest guests ever on the popular show.  His intellectual reasoning on the guest questions (to arrive at the correct response) and his impersonations of Bill Clinton and Walter Cronkite served to make for one of the best guest appearances yet.  Thank you, Brian Williams, for giving me lots of laughs this Sat. morning.  Please consider returning to "Wait, Wait.." in the future.
When did NBC become the "Lap dog for the Left"?
Tea Party misinformation and mischaracterizations of Main Stream Americans by NBC, CBS, CNN and ABC is disturbing.  These are not professional news organizations but merely White House mouth pieces supporting an obvious left wing agenda.  No fair and balanced reporting.  I went to Washington DC on Sept 12 to be a part of and see first hand the Tea Party and 912 movements.  Your organizations have failed the American people and the news profession.  The Fourth Estate is ashamed of your behavior.
You rocked on Wait, Wait.  Thank you for being so funny today!
I am very appreciate your programe. i hope someday i am be able to like you to have a career i love and to devote myself to it. you have infulunced me a lot.
Hi Brian:  We love your show on TV. You are our favorite Anchor but I do have one complaint. Why are you still calling it "Swine Flu"?  It has been proven it has nothing to do with pigs (swine). Also, we love Pork which is better for you than a lot of beef and we eat a lot of it. So, please get with the program and call it by its rightful name, H1N1. Thanks.

Jean
Hello Brian: I thoroughly enjoyed your appearance on "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me". Thanks for sharing another side of your persona with us!
Brian,
I just love Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and having you on the show and in another "element" it was very interesting to hear and enjoy.
You made it one of my favorite programs of all time.
Your talents are very impressive especially comedic-wise.
Thank you for letting us know you further.
Loved, loved, loved you on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me!
I figured since today is the election which Acorn is helping to steal.
