Sights and sounds

From the open window of my Rockefeller Plaza office I am enjoying the crisp and coolish afternoon air, the sounds of drums and music from the Spanish Columbus/Hispanic Day parade making its way down Fifth Avenue, and just below me, tourists are skating on the newly re-opened ice rink. It's a feast for the senses, and a reminder of why I love fall in New York City.

In the meantime, we're busy preparing tonight's broadcast, which will include coverage of today's massive gay rights rally in Washington, where some of the spotlight is on president Obama and his so far unfulfilled pledge to end the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

We will also tell you why Wall Street is now getting into the business of investing in death - or to be more specific, life insurance policies.

Plus, what a newly re-discovered mummy in Miami is telling scientists about life 2,700 years ago.

Thanks for checking in. Please join us later for NBC Nightly News.

Hi, Lester.

You just created such a beautiful image from New York to us. I've never been to New York, but have always kept a place in my heart for that city. Only from movies have a been able to create an image of that city in the Fall and Winter -- whenever I finally get up there, my wish is that it will be in either of those seasons! Simply beautiful.

I'm so glad Nightly News is on tonight. So much news over the weekend, I've been missing getting the reports from NBC Nightly News.

I'll join you tonight, and tune in to Richard Engel's premiere of "Tip of the Spear". I've been looking forward to his report. He's truly the best in his field!

Take care, and see you soon.
-Cary
Naturally, the NBC Nightly News just labeled the gay rights marchers "the internet leftist fringe" and ensured America that nothing will come of this.  When did equality before the law become "leftist fringe?"
Lester,

You were dynamic this evening!

As for Wall Street and the death-life
insurance gamble, I think I will
bet on myself and hope to win. Gambling
is in my blood.  And I am A-okay with
the odds.

Phyllis
Thank you for the story about the recently discovered mummy at the Bass Museum of Art.  However, your reporter should know that the museum is located in Miami BEACH, not Miami.  Miami BEACH is not the wet side of Miami, but a separate city!
Good Evening Mr.Holt, Another great broadcast this evening! Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast! Looking Forward to Richard's documentary, "Tip of the Spear" tonight on MSNBC! Now on to the broadcast. First of all Richard's report about the war in Afghanistan and the possible sending of 40,000 more US troops. As Richard stated the US troops are already spread very thin over the region and they spend much time defending themselves against the taliban more than being able to help do nation building. They are pushed off their bases to fight the taliban and that makes it extremely difficult to create a peaceful nation for the civilians. The US does strike against Pakistan where the situation of fighting the taliban is increasing. As Richard said the two conflicts are linked and it puts the US troops in a difficult position.
Excellent Reporting as Always Richard!
On anther note the report by Mr.Allen about the H1N1 vaccine showed many fears among people as to the safety of the vaccine. The vaccine shots will be arriving this week and many communities are increasing distibution, but people are still cautious about getting the vaccine even though officials state it is very safe.

On a weather note the temperatures have fallen quite low in the MidWest. It is hard to believe that snow is falling where baseball is now being played in the stadium. I hope the fans of the Colorado Rockies can keep warm enough during the game. Mighty Wintry for this time of the Fall.

The report by Michelle Kosinski about the newly discovered mummy around 2700years old was very interesting. The 3-D imaging of the head was great with so much detail and all the teeth is such nice shape. This man did have a few problems such as arthritus, fractured pelvis and a curvature if the spine, but the heart being removed is a true mystery. The sarcophagus was very nicely painted not quite like the Egyptian kings, but very good. It will be interesting to find out more about this mummy.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Always wonderful to see you on the broadcast Richard! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard! Will be watching your documentary. "Tip of the Spear" tonight!
Excellent Reporting Always!
XOXO
Lester,

If a healthcare worker wants to keep their job, they should forget about the 14th ammendment and concentrate on "first do no harm." by getting a swine flu shot.Patients' rights have been ignored for a long time and it's time for some in the healthcare field to stop acting as if they're taking care of patients for free. If people didn't get sick, there wouldn't be any need for drs., nurses, insurance co.,etc. In no way am I referring to those who give their all and enjoy what they do. They deserve more money, the nurses.

Lester, who's writing the script that you and John Harwood have on the weekend? Neither of you are expected to offer your opinions on Pres. Obama or what he decides or doesn't decide. And, no, all of a sudden do you need to admonish him on what he hasn't accopmlished concerning gay rights as in "his so far unfulfilled pledge..." That's not even grammatically correct. Well, who knows?

NBC is getting somwhere between Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition, and MSNBC. I notice MSNBC hosts are beginning to think they're experts on politics. If you ever read the comments on your broadcast, I'm not a cheerleader anymore. That's why Brian set up this blog, to get feedback. And not just all positive. I really believe that producers, editors, exec.,etc.have made some recently bad decisions with the nightly news.

As for the video tape of the shootout at the bar, and paraprasing you, "It's a good thing they were lousy shots." You're talking about a video of a real shootout that probably involved teens and gang members that showed thier faces.I hope NBC won't get sued. I hope the ones involved didn't see the faces of others involved. It's not something that should be sensationalized on the nightly news or anywhere. At some point in time, I'm hoping that a family can sit down and watch the news together.

I'm always making grammitical errors. I'll use the excuse that I dropped out of school, but did get my G.E.D. And I don't have a proofreader. In a Fri. night comment I actually wrote "costed" rather than "cost." Yuck!!
But when you refer to "president", in the way that you did, it should be capitalized. When you refer to "fall" as in a season, that should be capitalized as well.
I still love you and Brian, in an appropriate way Lester. Sorry you had my poem removed, that I sent you a few mo. ago. I was going to copy and paste, and send it to a friend. It contained the word "nipple" and even though it was appropriately used in the poem, you make have taken it in the wrong way. Lighten up Lester. I'm not romantically interested in you. Hopefully we'll see you Sat. evening. Those golfers need a rest.

Vicki
Dear Brian Williams,

I did watch the news cast, the other night, and you had a segment on Chris Rock and his movie about hair. I ask why ?....I do take the time to watch the news ,not more movie reviews. When do i expect to see you with an apron on,and a cooking segment....Lets get serious,as painful as it may be...

Lester,

Just one more thing about gay rights. I thought Christian Conservatives(most), think that homosexuality is a sin. If that's the case, then they probably wouldn't be complaining that Pres. Obama hasn't done enough for the rights of gays. You(meaning anyone), shouldn't pretend to themselves that they're helping their brothers and sisters out by advocating for gay rights. It isn't just a cool thing to do these days, just as most people didn't vote for Pres. Obama because it was cool or they were trying to get rid of white guilt, or make up for their ancestor's wrongs. People just need to decide what they personally believe is right or wrong and stop straddling the fence, depending what's in vogue.
And stop the hypocracy. That will get a person a ticket to hell faster than anything.

Have a good week.
P.S.

Hypocrisy. I was close. I forgot to mention that even though I agree with most of Pres. Obama's decisions and what he's accomplished, I don't think he's done enough for gays in and out of the military. All of this healthcare reform is taking so damn long because of trying to appease the right wing. The wars,
economy, etc. are evidently going to be around forever, but at least Pres. Obama is dealing with it.

Also, thanks to Michelle Kosinski for her report on the mummy in Fla. I'm glad to see she hasn't left NBC.
Lester,
I think this article that appeared this
morning in The Louisville Courier-Journal
this morning is revelant to the health
care issue:

NURSE CHARGED IN VA DEATH RELEASED UNDER
HOUSE ARREST:

I quote in part:

Rick Ellison, special agent for the US Dept
of Veterans Affairs, testified Wednesday that
Whitt admitted giving Chain at least six 10
milligram morhpine shots within a period of just
a few hours.  She said, "I thought I was doing
it to help make him comfortable."  Yeah, right.

West said the case is simple -- Whitt overdosed
a dying man to free up time care for other
patients

"She made a conscious, deliberate and inentiona choice
to cause the death of Mr, Chain," West said"

The article is chilling and curls the blood.

Phyllis
Lester,
I believe an Amethyst is your birthstone,
not Michael Jackson's:

A poem by Emiley Dickinson"

I held a Jewel in my fingers
And went to sleep
The Day was warm and winds were prosy
I said "I will keep"

I woke--and chid my honest fingers,
The Gem was gone--
and now, an Amethyst remembrance
is all I own.

Phyllis
