Campground homes

Route 231 is just off Interstate 40, about a half-hour outside Nashville.  And like clockwork, the bus bound for Wilson Central High stops on the busy road every school morning at 7:10. It seems an unlikely spot to be picking up children until you see the campers and tents set up just off the road.

What happens when moms and dad lose their jobs and can't make the mortgage? Tough times call for creative solutions and we found one of them in central Tennessee. That's where families who used to own homes in suburbs near the campground are now living in it. It's a step toward stability, an effort to keep their kids in the same schools as they try to regain financial footing.

You'll find tricycles and strollers on Timberline's pebbled roads, and the campground office is stocked with school supplies -- free to any child in need.  For now, it's home...and one with a silver lining at that. These families who've lost so much financially say they've found something money can't buy; a neighborhood of people who care.

The school bus makes a daily pick-up at the Timberline Campground.

Such a sad, yet sweet story. Thanks for sharing.
Steinbeck brought us the Joads, and you brought us the Renaults.  At least they are able to live in the same area.  Let's hope that they won't have to take to the highway to survive, and will be able to return home some day.
I WILL PRAY FOR EVERY PERSON THAT IS LIVING THERE WITHOUT A JOB THAT GOD WILL HELP EACH ONE FIND A JOB. GOD IS GOOD AND HE IS ALL POWERFUL YOU PRAY AND TRUST HIM AND HE WILL GIVE YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED.  I CARE MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES.
We have a tent trailer that is going into winter storage. We are wondering if the Renault family in your story would like to use it. It would get them off the ground and it is equipped with a sink, heater, stove, toilet and shower. Let me know if this works and we can arrange to drive it down there. Thank you.
Where is the government NOW????  The government bails out the filthy rich car companies, yet these children and families suffer! No jobs! No help! Where is the government NOW??  Why isn't it HERE HELPING THESE PEOPLE????
this story shows how some of the nicest people in this country have been hurt by the economy, the recession, and the poor decisions made by some of our politicians. Lets hope that things will get better for everyone.
Get ready ...Coming to a city park near you... I will see you around the campfire. Do not call these Obamavilles. They are Bushtowns, plain and simple. Brother can you spare a dime?
alot of us take it for grantite that we have a home to go home to.camping is one of my favarite things to do.in new mexico we went camping for the whole hunting season.we loved it.i hated going home.in colorado we are only aloud to camp at the same site or area for no more than 14 days.more and more people across the country are find it helps pull family closer together without all the technoligy in the way.they are acualy talking to each other over diner, getting more rest, and just simply enjoying life for what it is.breathing in one day at atime.at least they are trying to keep it together.
I grew up on the campground my parents had owned.  I was 11 when they built it.  Over the 27 years I spent there, I saw people with 100k motorhomes who sold their homes and chose this lifestyle, parents with very young children living in tents, a man who had a 50k job with Philips that lived in a teepee for atleast 10 years (so long we sometimes forgot he was there), and a family with 6+ adults and their children living in a 24ft. trailer.  There is everything you need at a campground.  Store, gameroom, clean bathrooms, laundromat, swimmingpool, playground (which is more than what my kids have now and we live in an HOA) and some have resturants (0urs did). There are always kids to play with in the summer and depending on the owner and time of the year, you can work off your rent. Honestly, I honestly don't see the downside. I don't see how it can be that sad either.  My kids and my brothers kids lived on the campground also until they were 6, 8, 9 and 11, and they still miss it (the campground sold in 2003).
You save about $100/m in rent as opposed to living in an apartment.  If something breaks down in your camper you pay to fix it.  I see a lot of people who camp out on the side of the road or in parking lots who live rent-free but with no electricity and no running water.  What if more and more families start doing the latter?
I love the camground by choice not by have to ( I don't live there).
Maybe this is a different feeling. I wish these people luck so they can live where they want to.
There is hope in this story.  This is a situation of hope.  I've been telling my family that 'if' we lose our home we at least have our 16ft. vintage trailer and tent to live in.  Of course, I don't want to lose our home and we are trying to refinance right now so that we don't.  The only problem is that the campgrounds here in California have restrictions on how long you can stay.  So we would have to move around.  UNLESS...campgrounds decided to show mercy towards those having to live this way until they can get back into a home.

How wonderful that one of the commenters above is offering their RV to a family there in Tenn.  I just love that!
I'd really like to help this family financially.   Is there a way to do this?
This happens every day and it has been happening for years - 12 years ago my family spent the summer at a campground (we were waiting to move into our home - delayed due to financing, mortgage co, etc).  There were many families staying in the campground for the summer, due to low income, no jobs, moving, etc.  I worried about the people that were still there in September/October, it gets cold in Michigan.
