Out of control

That big fire burning north of Los Angeles has almost doubled in size since our report on last night's broadcast. Thousands of homes are now under evacuation orders. We'll be going to live to the scene this evening for the very latest.

We also have an amazing survivor's story to report involving 3 fishermen who were missing for over a week in the Gulf of Mexico – so long that active search efforts had virtually been suspended. Our Peter Alexander has just spoken to one of the men who explained what happened to them and how they were rescued.

Suspicions are growing today over what other crimes Philip Garrido, the accused kidnapper of Jaycee Dugard, may be linked to. Those suspicions have now caused police to rope off part of a yard next to Garrido's as a crime scene.  George Lewis brings us the new developments from Antioch, California.

Plus, we'll tell you about why hard times in the lobster catching business have tempers boiling on a tiny island off the coast of Maine.

Thanks for checking in. I hope you'll catch us later for NBC Nightly News.

Good Evening Mr.Holt. Nice to see you this evening for the broadcast. First of all the report by Mr.Almaguer from California about the terrible wildfires which seem to be getting out of control. Hearing the wildires had quadrupuled in size overnight threatening the homes in all directions is awful for the firefighters trying to stop the flames and the residents living in the area. All the dry brush helps to make the fires spread along with the high temperatures. One hopes the firefighters will gain the upperhand very soon.
On another note the report by Mr.Alexander abotu the three fishermen who were lost at sea becuase their boat capsized certainly ended happily when they were found by a sport fisherman. The three fishermen really knew how to take care of themselves and didn't give up. As the man from the Coast Guard stated they looked good. Nice ending!

The report by Mr.Viqueira about the burial of Senator Edward Kennedy showed how much outpouring from the public and his collegues was really heartwarming. So many people came out tp pay their respects to Senator Kennedy and it proves how much of an impact he had on this nation.
May he rest in peace.
The piece by Janet Shamlain from Matinicus Island off the coast of Maine concerning lobster fishermen declaring the waters around the island only for those who live on the island seems to be a fight for the future generations and business of the people living there. It is a fragile business and one hopes things will work out for the people working so hard on the island.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO
Lester,
The story about the horror kidnapping totally
demoralizes me, and I am an eternal optimist
but I do not know how the young woman will
get through this alone.  She needs a loving
husband or Christian Counselling with
Frank Minirth M.D. Paul Meier, M.D. Don
Hawkins, Th.M. of the Minirth-Meier Clinic.
located in Richardson, Texas. who are
wonderful.  At one time they were on televison
and also came to Southeast Christian Church
which is in our backyard, in a manner of
speaking.

One story was as sensational as  the next
but I am only commenting on the kidnapping
this evening because of the sheer horror of
her ordeal.

I just got a call from my daughter to tell
me that my husband is on his way home, an
hour drive.  Her husband did not want to
go to the ballgame, so it was lucky her girlfriend could use the ticket and go with them. And
lucky for me that I finished a novel, which
was mesmerizing and so are you.

God bless the Kennedys, so much tragedy in
the family.

Phyllis

the ticket and go with them..
Lester,
I read that Jenna Bush, the daughter of
former President George W. Bush, will be
with The Today Show.

Also, Laura Bush will be a Special Guest Speaker
with the Get Motivated Seminar in Louisville
on September 29.  Other speakers include
Gen. Colin Powell, Terry Bradshaw, Zig Ziglar,
Rick Pitino, and Rudy Giuliani.

I pray for the people in L.A. and Greece. If we can build a fence hundreds of miles long, made of concrete, wood and metal.. why is it we cannot create a fence of water sprinkler systems around areas prone to fire? These sprinkler systems need not be fed by the drinking water supply either.
Lester, when you can, please put out the biggest "CALL" ever for people to evacuate their homes when asked to do so by fire officials. My son is on one of the HotShot Hand Crews on the Station fire, and they, like all others involved in the fight have their hands full and lives on the line dealing with the fire. There are injuries to firefighters that don't make the news. To further risk their lives because people refuse to leave, and then want to be rescued is flat out wrong. Unless you have done public service work or have family involved in it, there often seems to be an arrogance of positon that values property above the precious human lives working hard on behalf of all. Thank you for all you do. Connor Sauer
When will you tell the truth about Kennedy's successor.  The current law was cooked up by Kennedy and the Massachusetts democrats to prevent Mitt Romney from naming Kerry's successor if he won in 2004.  Brian Williams complains that he is not biased and this is a perfect example of biased news.
Lester,
Cheney for 2010?  According to the Wall Street
Journal, the idea is being taken deadly
seriously in some quarters. In effect,
that would be a third term for George W. Bush
but how hard would it be to circumvent the
Amendment of the Constitution and give Bush
another term which would change the world. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky could pull it off if anybody could.  Just my two cents worth.      Phyllis
Hey Lester,

I didn't get to watch you Sun. evening or your Dateline special about Steve McNair. Actually, I forgot about it until I did a quick twitter search to see what you and Brain had been working on this week. You got mixed reviews on it. I wish that I had seen it. Some twittered that the story went more into detail about his murder. I'm still of the mindset that he shouldn't have been messing around with a twenty yr. old. But of course he didn't deserve to be murdered. I can't imagine how devistated his wife and family were and are. I'm sure they'll never really get over it.
I also read that someone saw you enjoying the nice weather in N.Y., on Madison Ave. It's finally getting nice here. But I can't imagine what Madison Ave. is like. When I sent you a newspaper photo from an old N.Y. Times of the American Indians camping out on the old Alpine Hotel, I tried to find where the hotel was, back in the day. I'd really like to find some old Indian maps of N.Y. too. Check out this site for beautiful photos of American Indians by Edward S.Curtis:
http://www.edwardscurtis.com/

I have a book of beautiful black and white photos of different American Indians Tibes. I'd like to send Brian and you copies for Xmas. It's an excuisite book inside and out. I also have copies of photos of my Cherokee family, including Aunt Lil, who is still doing fine.

And I'm sure that someone has wriiten a great piece about Jupiter Hammon, the first African-American to be published in this country. I always thought it was Phyllis Wheatley.(I sent you info pertaining to that as well.)

I'll be seeing Mac Arnold on the 18th. I hope you've had time to check out his website.

So I'm just catching up here. I wrote you about my new cat who is 12 yrs. old. (Fri.) Pickles is 15 lbs., can you beat that? No, I didn't think you could.

I don't know if you read these comments. We'd like to think that you and Brian do. But here's one more little poem from the book of poetry "The Bone-Orchard Conga" by Ray McNiece--for anybody who like poetry, not that we have to in order for a poem to exist...

* see next post, this one's getting too long. And if you would be so kind, moderators...
