Another sad goodbye

By Lester Holt, NBC News anchor

We lost another member of the first generation of television newsmen today. Don Hewitt, like Walter Cronkite, was one of the guys who in those earlier days of television, quickly figured out its potential as a platform for journalism. He was behind the first televised presidential debate, and worked on a number of shows, including the Evening News.

It was "60 Minutes," however, with which Hewitt will forever be associated. He created it in 1968, and
served as its executive producer until just a few years ago.  Under his guidance it became one of the most successful programs in television history.  It also raised the bar in broadcast journalism.

We join with our
colleagues at CBS today in mourning Don Hewitt's death, and honoring his life, legacy and enormous contributions to our industry.

On our broadcast tonight we're covering new guidelines in the American workplace for dealing with swine flu.
Also, a day of carnage in Iraq leaves 95 dead, and hundreds injured, while American troops await orders from the sidelines. Plus, auto dealers have taken in plenty of clunkers in trade for new fuel efficient cars, but many are now asking "where's my cash?"

Brian is off tonight. I hope to see you later for NBC Nightly News.

Good Evening Mr.Holt, Nice to see you again filling in for Mr.Williams. Another fine broadcast this evening. First of all the report by Mr.Miklasweski concerning the deadly bombings in Iraq. So many suicide bombings happening today in Baghdad it does pose questions as the the ability of the Iraqi Security Forces to handle security for the country. It was horrible to learn how many were killed and the scene inside the meeting was frightening to hear. The reason of blaming al-qaeda is certainly possible, but also the Iraqi Security Forces being negligent goes along with that idea. US Forces should not have to return to region and when the time comes for them to withdraw it should be done. One hopes for the citizens of Iraq the violence ceases and a more peaceful existence becomes the norm. Time will tell.

The tension the day before the Afghanistan elections seems to be mounting. It was very sad to learnm five US soldiers were killed. The taliban appears to be determined to disrupt the elections. One hopes the election process will go smoothly. One waits until tomorrow.
On another note the report by Mr.Mott about the extreme weather around the nation really showed some of mother nature's drastic weather. All kinds of conditions from heat, floods, winds, tornados, lightening in the skies etc... Some major damage in some areas with much clean-up. One hopes Hurricane Bill as a category 4 hurricane will not effect the East Coast too much. Yet, there will be heavy and dangerous surf.
It was sad to learn about the passing of Don Hewitt. The creator of the  long running "60 Minutes" is definitely a giant in news. He made great strides in the world of television news and had "60 Minutes" is still going strong. It was a nice quote by Mr.Brokaw saying, "We were all students of his genius."

The "Making A Difference"segment by Mr.Barber was very nice and shows how sports can bring people together.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard! I enjoyed your report on "Morning Joe" today! I saw you had a live chat today and tried to submit a question, but it didn't make it. Sigh! I did read the questions and am really looking forward to your documentary!! If you are planning writing another book I will look forward to that too!Excellent Reporting as Always!! I will look forward to your reporting on the Afghanistan elections. Always keep extra safe!!
XOXO

Hi Lester,

Hope you're having a good week. Thanks again for filling in for Brian.

Things are really bad this week in the news. It's not going to be that easy for Iraq to take control of their country. I hope the best for them and our troops. Here again, my brother and his fellow troops have only been over there, (this time) for appx. 2 mo. Shawn is in the transportation unit. They'll probably be some of the last troops to leave. On a sidenote here--I hope that bastard Cheney starts running his mouth again. Someone, or several someones  should have to pay for getting us into war to begin with. I don't think we should just turn the page. Att. Gen. Holder was doing good there for awhile but dropped the ball; unless things are going on behind the scenes in preparation for a trial.

The Afghanistan election is also going to be tough for their people. There are so many countries trying extremely hard to make some dramatic changes. But when you have corrupt politicians, I'm sure it's like fighting an uphill battle. Hopefully things won't be as devastating as the Iranian election.

It's hard to believe that Scotland is allowing the terroist rssponsible for killing 173 people free under "humanitarian" reasons. I'm known for being an extremely left wing liberal, but who cares if he has prostate cancer? As one victim's family pointed out, they have excellent medical care in Scotland. He's lucky to even be alive.

I am so proud of Barney Frank for telling it like it is? What planet are these town hall protesters from? They're carrying guns and defacing the image of our president--and for those who wonder--NO, I didn't drink the Kool-aid. These people evidently don't understand what they're doing to kids growing up and hearing out president being compared to a monster who killed over 6 million human beings. That's so sad and dangerous to think that they're breeding so much hate into their children. I can just imagine some of the dinner conversations and the conversations that place down at the old shooting range, blowing up stuff with semi-automatics and grenades. Yes some do that. Anything that people can shoot or throw is available.

Lester, I always wondered this about the "cash for clunkers" program. Some of the cars don't qualify for the whole $4000. What if some of these people can't afford car payments? A lot of people are  getting  by on a car that works, period. Just wondering...

Well, before I forget--Brian if you're reading these comments, I heard your BFF, Jon Stewart reporting on CNN. Evidently they've come up with a "news" segment called "just sayin'". Sound familiar, about the bedroom temp. and that little home run you hit? And if you're still with the muppets, give the Count a kiss for me. You have to put all of these great airings on DVD for us.

Lester, I hope you can be with us tomorrow night, but please get some rest after the broadcasts and during the mornings. Have a great evening. Sorry for going overobard there, but pleease people, don't come and burn my house down. I'm just sayin'.

Vicki
Hey again Lester,

Just one more thing. Jon Stewart had a guest on the other night who was saying in a comedic way that eventually white people will be the minority some day---pointing out that there are so many different U.S. citizens from diffrent ethnic groups. The guest was black and maybe you had to hear him in order for people not to take offense. But they were showing a clip of the woman who was crying at a town hall meeting and saying that she wanted her America back. The guest suggested that she not tell the Indians that. That's an excellent point. Considering this is the United States, it's everybody's country. Some people need to read their history books.

Lester, I haven't sent you a poem in a long time. Tonight might be my lucky night with the moderators.

This is taken from the book of poems by Ray McNiece,
"The Bone-Orchard Conga."

       First Woman on The Moon

  This song is gravity
  pulling the dead light
  from the full moon
  into the lungs and sung
from the top of the escape
  alone and above love
  filling the empty alley.

  She's up there alright,
  bounding dunes weightlessly,
  somersaulting crators,
  deserted evening gown
  fluttering through the dark
  like breath through an oboe.
  And she's not coming back.

  Who hears the sad chant
  of the crickets at dawn?
  Who hears the whippoorwill
  anymore? Hank, stop drinking
  that milk laced with whiskey
  and tell me, who hears
  the moon going down solo?

Hope you like it , Lester, and hope it gets past the poetry police.

Vicki
Hi Lester:

Great to see in you again tonight for Brian.

Glad to see that now not only schools but businesses are also taking steps to help combat the spread of Swine Flu.  We all need to do what is necessary to help stop the spread of it. People need to realize that if we are sick we need to stay home until we are well, we need to follow the guidelines for what we need to do each day, like washing hands, etc., and once the vaccine is available we need to get it.  If we all do our part we can help stop the spread of it.

It appears that our leaving Iraq in the hands of their own security force was a bit premature.  They don't seem to be prepared to handle what is being thrown at them.  The conflicts are getting worse and worse and the killings and injuries the Iraqi people are facing each day is horrible.  I hope the security forces can overcome this soon.

It is disturbing that the Taliban will do anything they can to stop the elections.  5 more of our troops were killed today as well as many people injured because the Taliban does not want them to have a democratic vote. This election is so vital to the lives of the Afghan people. I hope the Taliban is not sucessful in halting the election.

I hope the President is doing the right thing in holding out for Republicans and Democrats to come to a meeting of the minds on this health care reform.  There is so much false information being brought out each day and it is hard for the White House to be able to thwart all of it but if the White House has to get this bill passed without the Republicans then so be it.  Something has to be done for all those who are in need of medical care and can't get it.

I am an assistant to three attorneys here in California and there has been an influx of DUI's invovling women.  I am not sure what the reason for the rise in numbers is, but it is serious.  I would assume that the ecoomy, job loss and depression is taking its toll on women as it does men.

Cash For Clunkers program is such a wonderful program.  It got the economy started up again and now it seems that it's going to end in a bust because the dealers have not gotten their money.  Why is the government letting this great program possibly fail?

Your Making A Difference story was great.  What the New York police officers are doing to connect with the teens is outstanding.  They are building a line of communiation that will help them reach these teens and try to keep them off the streets and out of trouble by focusing on sports like Crickett.  It also helps the police to understand what the teens are going through every day and hopefully in the end they will be able to work together to make the lives of these teenagers better by instilling the confidence they need to trust the police.  It would be great if more cities across the Country would take this example and put it to good use.

Have a great evening Lester and hopefully we will see you again tomorrow evening.
How come NBC sells Obama items in it's store and did not Sell Bush items?
Why does NBC sell Obama mugs and T-Shirts in it's store and never sold Bush items?
Hey Lester,  (Thur.)

I had a few min., so I need to make a correction. Last night , when I was commenting about the Lockerbie bombing, I typed in 173. I should have written 270 people were killed by the terrorist they released. Sad and so wrong to allow him to leave for "Compassion" reasons. I heard that Omar Kadafi's brother picked him up at the airport. I think we're talkin' some back door deals like oil.

I won't be able to watch the broadcast tonight. But during a twitter search I read that an organization called "Good Food Gardens" is going to be on with Brian tonight. So maybe that means Brian is coming back. I also read the interview that "Making Music Magazine" did with you. I knew you liked to play bass and I'm glad you still find time. The pics of you are great too. For those who want to check it out, click onto this: http://www.makingmusicmag.com/

Well Lester, have a good evening and remaining week. I'll see you Sat. morning.

Vicki
Where has Doreen Gentzler been?  She is fantastic and hasn't been on for quite awhile.
