U2's cool karma

Hope the overworked Brian Williams is getting in some good R and R, as yours truly helps keep an eye on the news of this day.

Breaking now: Federal prosecutors say a man tried to steal 130 million credit card numbers, in a conspiracy to pull off the largest case of identity theft in U.S. history, allegedly targeting 711 and grocery store customers.  He's under arrest.

The President took on defense spending today, telling the VFW that defense spending for special interests has got to stop.  There were protestors outside, including a few with pistols strapped to their legs.

"Health care coops" are emerging as an element in the President's health care plan, as the "public option" appears not to be gaining enough support.  (If you are confused, we will explain tonight.)

In spite of threats, an unprecedented number of women are running for offices in Afghanistan, a country where only 10 percent of girls go to school.  Will women finally get a chance there?

A new study finds that 23 percent of men and 9 percent of women ages 50-65 admit to binge drinking. And by "binge," they don't mean once in a while.

In a sign of the times, Readers Digest is facing bankruptcy.

The amount of H1N1 vaccine to be available in October will be dramatically less than predicted.  We are trying to get to the bottom of why this is.

And U2 is too cool.  Ok, that's not news.  But get this, the band that once used concerts to tell audiences what was happening in the Bosnian war, has gotten a little good karma from a survivor of the war.

This last story reminds me that all the cruelties and injustices of our world are met with an equal measure of generosity and kindness eventually.  Of course the more people care about the world, the sooner things will change.

HI Ann:

Such a nice treat to have you anchoring for Brian. I too hope Brian is getting some good R and R but I am not sure that he or any other news anchor even know what that means.  I was not able to respond on Thursday and Friday due to family stuff but your broadcasts were great and I am looking forward to seeing you tonight.  From what your blog reads I think this is going to be a very interesting broadcast.

Good to have you in for Brian

Good to see you on Nightly News, When you do the news story on the Swine Flu, you should mention that the swine flue vaccine could trigger "Guillain-Barre Syndrome; just like the swine flu vaccine of the 1970's did. Dr. Nancy spoke of this on her afternoon show on MSNBC but made no mention of it on 'todayshow'.  I don't think many people watch her in the afternoon show, although I like her and watch when I can. By the way 'did you take your nap?' I don't believe in naps, 'that is sissy stuff.' that's not for a tough girl like you.
I thought it was in poor taste to show the Obama family on vacation. The plane they fly is paid for with tax payer money, in a time when the tax payers are being squeezed to death. Families are living in tents and thousands of people are out of work, while the president and his family enjoy a vacation. I cannot believe that Nightly news showed that in place of honoring the many people that are making sacrafices to help those in need.
Good Evening Ann, Nice to see you this evening filling in for Mr.Williams. I hope Mr.Williams is enjoying soem rest and relaxation during his time off! Another great broadcast this evening! Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast! PLEASE STAY EXTRA,EXTRA SAFE ALWAYS!!
Now on to the broadcast. First of all Richard's report from Afghanistan concerning women and the elections in the region this Thursday showed how one woman is attempting to make a change in these elections by running for office. The 26year old is certainly brave going out with makeup and meeting people all without any bodyguards around her. It was saddening to learn only 10% of girls in the region go to school and just 13% know how to read. Seeing the classrooms of small children along with their mothers behind prison bars at a facility under 24hour watch is scary, yet the children and especially the mothers are escaping the brutality of the husbands and being there does provide protection. The young 25year old saying her husband would have forced her into prostitution unless she had escaped is sickening to hear and also being beaten by the husbands. The children were really cute and seemed so happy to see Richard. They need affection and love and seeing one of them wanting to have Richard pick them up was so heartwarming. Richard was truly sweet to them! One hopes the young woman candidate will be able to make some positive changes for women, yet only time will tell. The elections this Thursday are very critical and one only hopes the result will be a positive and peaceful one for everyone.
Excellent Reporting as Always Richard!!
PLEASE STAY EXTRA,EXTRA SAFE ALWAYS!

On another note the report by Mr.Todd concerning President Obama and the healthcare reform bill is definitely causing tensions in every State. The town hall in Grand Junction,Colorado this weekend was interesting and good questions were asked by people in attendence. Hopefully, when Congress reconvenes in the Fall they will be able to make a healthcare bill that makes sense and is affordable to people. Only time will tell when the Fall comes.
The piece by Norah O'Donnell about the First Family and their great travels this summer really showed how many wonderful places the two daughters Sasha and Malia have seen over this summer. They were having alot of fun this weekend being out West seeing the Grand Canyon,Yellowstone National Park and white water rafting. They have had an adventurous and fun summer vacation!

The piece by Mr.Fletcher about the band U2 returning to Sarejevo to play concerts was incredible. The young girl attending the concert who was only twelve when all the war was going on really seemed to be overwhelmed with excitement at seeing U2 in concert after having endured such horror many years ago. U2 made a difference in these people's lives through their music and that is great. I thought it was great she got to meet them again after the concert. Nice piece!
Thank You for the broadcast Ann! See you on the Today Show tomorrow. Always great to see you Richard! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laure,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard! Excellent Reporting as Always!
XOXO
Martin Fletcher could use a lesson or two in the Ethics of Journalism.  Journalists are supposed to report the news, not influence it or become part of it.  On April 8, Fletcher was the reporter (and the star) of a story about his efforts to help a California family track down their relatives in L'Aquila, Italy after the earthquake.  On April 10, Fletcher searched for a different family's home in L'Aquila to see if it was intact.  It is not a journalist's job to involve himself in news stories.  Unless it is a matter of life and death, a reporter is supposed to be an impartial observer, not a participant.  Now Fletcher is at it again.  On Monday, he arranged for a Sarajevan woman to reunite in Zagreb with the members of U2, whom she had first met when they played in her home town over a decade ago.  At one point, Fletcher asks her, "Will you meet them again tonight?"  She says, "Hopefully."  It's obvious that Fletcher asked the question knowing that NBC was in the process of arranging (or had already arranged) the reunion.  Fletcher ends the story by saying, "But it wasn't the birthday boy who got the best present--it was Alma--with a little pull from NBC."  Indeed.  Fletcher and the producers clearly manipulated the story to build suspense, even though they already knew what the outcome would be.  Shame on Fletcher and NBC News.  This was more like an MTV reality show than a news story.  It's really sad what's happened to Fletcher.  He used to be a top-notch reporter when he was stationed in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank.  Now he's reduced to doing "fan-meets-idols" type stories.  Even worse, he's manipulating the story, rather than merely reporting it.  And that is grossly unethical.

Of course, it's no surprise that Nightly News did yet another story featuring U2.  Bono and the band have been FOB's (Friends of Brian) for many years.  They are featured in Nightly News stories several times a year for no reason other than to provide high-recognition entertainment value.  After all, Brian and the producers know that stories about celebrities--even stories devoid of news value--are very popular with viewers.  And attracting viewers means high ratings and high ad rates.  Well done, NBC.
On the Jan. 5 Nightly News, Brian Williams showed a clip of John Chancellor from 1976 pledging not to air stories about Amy Carter unless there is a compelling reason to do so.  Brian then said that's "pretty much the way we all feel about the Obama daughters."  Well, that didn't last long.  Monday night's story titled "Excellent Adventure" (as in "Bill & Ted's" or "Sasha & Malia's") was all about--the Obama daughters.  This is from Ann Curry's introduction:  "The Obamas haven't exactly been loading up the station wagon, but for Sasha and Malia, it's been an opportunity to see the beauty of this country nevertheless."  Then we see a clip of Sasha and Malia in an ice cream store.  There they are whitewater rafting.  And at Yellowstone watching Old Faithful erupt.  And at the Grand Canyon.  Now they're disembarking from Marine 1.  And entering Air Force 1.  We see still photos of the girls in Paris, Moscow, London and Ghana.  We're told that their next stop is Martha's Vineyard.  So what exactly is the "compelling reason" for NBC to show the Obama girls on their summer vacation?  Obviously, there isn't one.  It was just a gratuitous story about the presidential daughters--the same presidential daughters that Brian pledged not to cover without good reason.  The "good reason" was that Brian and the Nightly News producers know that Sasha and Malia equal good ratings.  I guess Brian figured that seven months later, no one would remember his pledge.   Well, obviously pledges go out the window when good ratings are at stake.  Anyway, what's a little lie between friends, right Brian?
Hi Ann

Sorry for the late post but I saw the broadcast last night but was not able to respond.  It was great to see you in for Brian and I too hope he is having a great vacation with his family out here in California.

It appears that the President is in trouble with his health care reform.  Now even some of our Democrats are against his removing the Public Option and I think it is really going to affect the outcome of this reform.  This is important to so many people who are struggling with no health care.  I hope he can find the solutions he needs to get this back on track and fast.  Then maybe he can get to work on the banks and credit card interest rates that are killing the middle class.  He promised that he would be for the middle class but I don't see how he can pass this one off any more.  Banks are getting money to give out to the big guns to the tunes of millions in bonuses but they are still laying off us middle class people saying they aren't making it.  Why can't they use the bonus money that these executives really don't need and put it to work keeping middle class Americans working?  Can you imagine how many people can still have a job if the exeuctives would only get one-half of the bonueses they are slated for?  The President is loosing ground on health care and he is not sitting to well with middle class Americans right now with the bank bonuses that will be given out.

I think it is such a wonderful thing for Afghanistan women to run for office.  I know this is very scary and risky for them but if they can accomplish this there might be hope in the future for some real change to the Afghanistan people.

What a wonderful site to see U2 doing concerts for some of the same people they performed for in 1997.  They made such an impact in 1997 with the music they performed and what they do through their music.  They are incredible musicians.

Ann, thanks for the great broadcast and hope to see you on the broadcast tonight.
Thanks Ann for keeping us posted. I noticed no one else commented and I wanted to make sure that you knew people are reading. I guess this is your week to sub, huh? With Brian and Meredith taking time off.
Bono (real name Paul Hewson) uses the band U2 as a political magnet.
Even George W. Bush gave Bono time to gripe about the the Aids efforts in Africa. Bush even upped the anti to Africa but, of course, never got credit.

Bono thinks he deserves the attention of all presidents and leaders of all nations. He doesn't.
He uses his popularity and exploits the band for his own self-serving special interests.

It is admirable that he presses on without the name calling that anyone else might use if they don't get their way but when does the band get tired of it?

Paul McCartney, worth 1.2 billion, has always been an activist against land mines, the slaughter of baby seals and strongly promotes a vegetarian diet, but this was done on his own or in conjunction with a spouse, not using his bands popularity as an exploitation piece.

Kudos to Bono. Kudos to McCartney. Just don't get mad if the answer doesn't go your way.
Ann,

I saw you about to start crying at the end of that U2 story.  That got _me_ going.  Love U2!
Good evening, Ann.

I've been a little busy with family this weekend, and at the start of this week, so I'm a little late getting to your posts and the broadcasts.

First of all, you've done a fantastic job filling in for Brian late last week and yesterday.

Yesterday's broadcast was great, as usual. I have been a huge fan of U2 for a long time now, and last night's story is just one reason why. It was such a touching story. Some of the things you can do in your profession are amazing, and so inspiring. To be able to get reunite this woman with the band she met years ago that had such an impact on her life, was just incredible.

I had to say something about this before I was too late.

Thank you for the broadcasts, Ann! I hope Brian Williams has been having a wonderful vacation with his family.

See you on Today!
Take care,
-Cary
You may feel that U2 is "too cool", but many other people think of the band as an overhyped, bloated relic desparately trying to cling to relevancy, aided by their friends at NBC, who set up an arranged meeting with an enthusiastic fan from Sarajevo, while portraying it as a chance occurrence. How dishonest of you all! Could you please just report on stories that actually matter?
