If it's Friday...

By David Gregory, Moderator, Meet the Press

I was stuck on an airport tarmac today for three hours so at first I missed the news about signs of recovery for the economy. It shrank in the second quarter, but less than expected. This seems to a lot of people including the President like it may be the beginning of the end of the recession. But if this is recovery, with so many people still out of work and foreclosing on their mortgages, it makes you worry. We will try to sort some of it out tonight with CNBC's Steve Leisman. Also, with the administration under fire for the stimulus failing to post the results they promised, one of the rebate programs that WAS working - the so called cash for clunkers - ran out of money. Looks like Congress will act quickly enough to authorize enough money for the program for you to get your cash back over the weekend.

If you haven't heard Senator Chris Dodd has prostate cancer. He shared the news with Senator Kennedy yesterday and Kennedy apparently said, "If I can beat mine, you can beat yours."

Also tonight, Norah O'Donnell with a great story about how horses can make a difference in the life of a solider returning from war.

Brian is away today. I hope you will tune in tonight. And have a great weekend.

Hi David,

I always enjoy watching you on Meet the Press. Also look forward to seeing you fill in for Brian. Keep up the great work.

@ Lester Holt fans:

I was doing some searches on Twitter, including Lester's name. Joan Baez twittered that Lester interviewed her this morning - to be aired on 8/18(?)

Also, Eliza, a lucky NBC employee twittered that she had been hangin with Lester all day and that she had lunch with "Lestaaa." Evidently she's working on the Joan Baez interview with him. Some of us, including your fans on FC, Lester, were so concerned that we were wondering, where in the world is Lester! It's good to know you're doing fine. Hopefully we can catch you tomorrow morning and/or tomorrow night.

Hope you've had a good vacation, if you were on vacation. You still work too hard. So long for now.

Vicki

P.S. MSNBC: Please don't unleash Donny on Tamron again, or anyone for that matter. Thank God David S. is returning.

Good Evening Mr.Gregory, Nice to see you for the broadcast this evening filling in for Mr.Williams. Another fine broadcast this evening. Now on to the broadcast. First of all the report by Kelly O'Donnell concerning the popular program "Cash For Clunkers' which seems to have become even more popular than anticipated. The demand being so high from consumers that the program was about to run out of money is incredible. It is good the government extended to program to help many more people purchase new cars and help the dealerships in their sales.
The report by Chris Jansing from Los Angeles showed how chaotic and overwhelmed the car dealerships. The flood of calls and activity for sales certainly helped the businesses, but it surely was confusing at first for all the people working to figure out the pages of regulations. One can understand why this weekend will be a busy one for all the car dealerships. Hopefully, it will keep on an upward pathway.
On another note the report by Mr.Bazell about a liquid alternative to the shot for preventing swine flu was somewhat encouraging. It this liquid is more available in larger numbers than people whoa are highly susceptible will be able to receive it sooner along with many others. With schools opening soon the sooner those who need vaccinations get them the better.
Nice to see the Space Shuttle Endeavor landed safely at the Kennedy Space Center today.
The "Making A Difference" segment by Norah O'Donnell about the Maryland Therapeutic Riding Center was really moving. The horses helping the wounded veterans heal from the traumatic injuries from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan seems to be rehabilitating the soldiers very well and each day is a new step towards full recovery. The horses are helping the soldiers in so many ways and it is just wonderful to see. Seeing them building news trails and caring for the horses is great therapy for themm too.
Very Nice Piece!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Gregory. So very sorry you had to spend three hours on an airport tarmac today. I'm glad you made it back safely! See you on Meet the Press on Sunday! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!

Hi David

This is such a great surprise to have you filling in for Brian tonight.  So glad you are doing tonight's  broadcast.

It appearsa the "Cash For Clunkers" program is going to continue with the help of funding from the government.  This has been a good jump start to our ecoomy and has broken through the stalemate of no spending by most people.  I know that some are saying this is costing another two milliion of tax payer money but not really. If what was said is true this money was already earmarked for another program that has not started yet.  So it was already budgeted in the stimulus package.  I truly hope that the Senate passes this through so we can contiue to see people getting out there and buying cars which gives our ecoomy a boost it really needs.  I hope that this is truly the last negative quarter that the gentleman from CNBC said economist are saying.  Maybe we will then see the start of our economy begin to recover.

Good news on the Swine Flu vaccine.  With the problems the manufacturers are having with the shots, this spray and possible use of drops being so readily available is such great news.  It appears  to be much easier to manufacture and administer and hopefully could be ready as soon as possible.  This is so needed especially with the start of school just around the corner.

I loved the "Making A Difference" segment.  To see these soldiers that have been wounded, emotionally and physically, getting the physical and emotional therapy they need to get better, build up confidence and strength and possibly return to duty from a horse is outstanding.  What wonderful work these people are doing for not only the soldiers but also those with special needs.

Again, it was such a a great treat to have you fill in for Brian tonight.  I hope you do it more often.  Will look forward to seeing you on Sunday. Hope you have a great evening.
David, Brian and anyone else who cares - I find it incredible that NBC has not had a story from Iraq all week. Yes, the situation in Iran is important, and things have been heating up in Afghanistan and will continue to do so. But we still have over 100,000 troops in Iraq. Maybe Richard can't handle it all. I noticed someone else suggesting you go to an hour of coverage. Like that's going to happen given the economics of your business. Maybe it's time to reexamine your priorities in selecting what you air. As good as some of the Making a Difference pieces are, why not run them once or twice a week and allow time for more breaking news. Without getting ugly, I've sensed for some time that I can no longer rely on NBC to tell me what is happening in the world.
When I saw Brian Williams's ridiculous 10-second promo that followed Friday's Nightly News, all I could think was:  how condescending.  In his most earnest anchor voice, Brian says, "The President has called the economy job number one.  People are scared--they're uneasy.  But we're all in this together.  You want to have someone with you making sense of it all."  We're all in this together?  Really?  So with his 8-figure salary, Brian is in the same boat as the rest of us?  I'm sure.  And this isn't the first time Brian has pretended to be just a regular guy struggling to get by during a financial crisis.  On March 12 he said, "And if we're all feeling poorer, the Federal Reserve put some actual numbers on that today."  Yes, I'm sure Brian is really feeling poorer due to the effects of the economic downturn.  I hope he can manage to keep up the mortgage payments on his vacation home in Yarmouth, Maine.  Here's some advice for Brian:  Don't pretend to be one of the regular "folks" (a word you use way too often).  It makes you come off as patronizing and superior.  I mean even more so than usual.
Hey David,  Just wanted to say you did a great job filling in for Brian, and how much I loved the story on the therapeutic horses helping the army soldiers get better~ and how neat it is that they can also, in turn help the autistic children who get to ride the horses as well.  It's like they are all patting each other on the back.  My oldest son who is 13 and has autism tried the horse back riding therapy at a wonderful facility in Sandston; unfortunately, he is also allerigic to horse hair, much like dog hair.  Sigh.......we were so disappointed as I used to ride horses when I was growing up and always loved it.

Anyways, I'm so glad the wounded soldiers can enjoy the horses and get some benefit from them as well.

Hope you have a great weekend everybody!
When you discuss  Healthcare Reform please interview Wendell Potter former Vice President of CGNA.  Thank you, Carole
I'm going to tell you black people something; Obama is going to set the black, (African Americans) people back 40 to 50 years.   You had it made, Free or discount homes, Free energy, Free phone,  Free medical, Free transportation, (Lynx) and Free food, (food stamps).   Now Obama has woke the True Americas up and they are starting to see what is going on in America and being to speaking out. It's scary to see WHITE PEOPLE speak out, ant it?   I must admit, it's about time.  My Personal Thoughts and Comments.  Sincerely,   Ronald Chambers
