It was reminding us of something...

Leave it to the good folks at Gawker.  If you watched any part of the President's AARP event today, perhaps you were bothered by the same nagging question: "What does this remind me of?"  Gawker got it.

I should also thank them for the time-lapse photography of the Manhattan Bridge, which we ran on the broadcast last night -- I first spotted it on Gawker.

We have a few non-Gawker items on the broadcast tonight, and we hope you can join us.

Hi Brian:

Thanks for the blog and the links. I didn't get to see the AARP event due to working but checked out your link and unfortunately this did remind me of Jerry Springer, who I never did like, and most of his guests.  Hopefull this did not turn into a 3-ring circus like many of Springer's shows.  Truly, I hope the AARP event went well and something was gained from it.  I am sure MSNBC will have something on it on the Web or on later shows for us to see.

Can't wait to see your broadcast tonight.
So will the Liberals paint any retiree who isn't on board with the AARP as "unauthentic" like they do escapees from "other groups"?
Martin Fletcher's story about Palestinians going to the ocean for the first time is my favorite "feel good" story in a long time.  As someone who lives within a short driving distance to the ocean (and it still feels too far away) I can't imagine being able to put my toes in the salt water.  The ocean is just so important to me; I can't imagine the lives of all the people who have never been able to touch it!  It is a small gesture for the two countries, but its going to be something the kids remember for a very long time.
Have to stop by and just say, keep them "What Works" pieces coming. Excellent work people.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Another fine broadcast this evening. An interesting link you posted. Always something out there to remind us of something else. Now on to the broadcast. First of all the report by Mr.Bazell concerning the swine flu outbreak and how it could possibly get worse during flu season. It would make sense for people who are most vulnerable so receive the vaccine first because of serious risk to their health. Pregnant women should be one of the top priorities. Hopefully, more information will come out of the meeting at the CDC in Atlanta tomorrow.

The report by Adrienne Mong from China about students on vacation ending up in quarantine due to the swine flu outbreak definitely showed much vigilance in China to the swine flu. It is awful some of the students had to be hospitalized, but it does seem they will get better. Good to know the students who were cleared are coming home with many stories to tell of their overseas vacation.

The report by Mr.Pete Williams about Judge Sotomayor being confirmed by the Senate is the next step in her becoming a member of the Supreme Court. I agree with  Senator Graham than it is a first for the court and it can inspire women wanting a career in law. It can be a change for the better.

The "What Works" segment by Janet Shamalian from Peoria, Illinois about Excel Foundry and how they did not have to make any layoffs was encouraging. Hiring good workers who can be versatile  and do whatever it takes to make the company better is great. Cross training people in different jobs within a company makes sense and obviously it is good for this company. The sales being up 7% is a great indication. Good job done by all!

The piece called "A Day ay the Beach" by Mr.Fletcher was so sweet and touching. The Palestinian children being permitted to go to the beach put such smiles and excitement in their in their faces it was really special to see. The young boy wanting to get seashells for his father really made one feel so moved. It was wonderful seeing him collect the seashells from the sand and then get in the water and have such fun. I liked it when he returned to his father and gave him the seashells then asked if he could go again. I truly hope he and all the children return to the beach and have fun soon!
Very Nice Piece Mr.Fletcher!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and WHO (World Health Organization) has estimated one quarter to one-third of the US population will be infected with H1N1 (Swine) flu when it makes a return visit this fall.

That's up to 100,000,000 Americans.

This means millions of Americans, many without health insurance, will fill hospital beds and emergency rooms without the ability to pay their bills.  This also means many hospitals will be in dire financial straits if this comes to pass.

So why is the Congress so hesitant to pass health care reform?
mr.williams i have never done anything like this in my67yrs.i just had to let you know how much i enjoy your show.6:30-7:00 is my time .i think you are very much a gentleman and a very good speaker.hope you will be there for a long time . mrs.rood
Just as a follow-up to my suggestion in a comment to yesterday's blog about providing us with an in-depth discussion of health care issues in August, it seems that Paul Krugman is saying the same thing:

"But I think there’s another lesson here that I’ll have to remember — namely, a lot of people are hungering for a discussion of the basics. It’s way too easy, as a pundit, to focus on the latest story or the current state of negotiations. At least once in a while, I need to bring it back to the underlying principles."

Hi Brian:

Great broadcast tonight.

What comes out of the CDC tomorrow will be vital to the efforts to combat the Swine Flu.  I know that it targets young children and teens, pregnant women and those with serious other illnesses and these people should receive the first vacines.  As I tell my kids and others it is our responsiblilty to do our part in doing what we can to help stop the spread of this flu and hopefully not catch it.

I was amazed at the Sotomayor confirmation today with one Republican voiting for her.  Way to go Senator Graham.  His statement as to her qualifications and what she will bring to the Court was outstanding and he was correct, she will be a great asset.

The controversy around Michael Jackson's death just keeps growing. We do need to see the toxocolgy results.  What is so hard for me to understand is, if this doctor was giving him such a serious drug on a regular basis to help him sleep, how was he able to get it without any questions asked so frequently?  If this was such a serious drug that was used in hospitals for surgery patients, Murray should never have given it to him no matter what Jackson was paying him.  There had to be something else, less lethal than this drug that could have been given to him to help him sleep.

I know Thursday the "Beer Summit" takes place at the White House. I hope once this is accomplished this issue of the "Stupid" word being used will come to an end for good and we can move on.

Loved your "What Works" segment tonight.  It is encouraging to see employees and employers working together to keep jobs and this foundry operating.  The time that is being invested by the employers to cross train their employes to be able to do anything needed wonderful.  Everyone doing no matter what it takes to make it work.  I hope your segment passes on this example to many, many more employers and employees.

Another great "Making A Difference" story.  It is hard to believe that there is someone, young or old, that has not seen the ocean, played in the water or in the sand.  What a wonderful gift these kids and adults got.  The excitement and the thrill on their faces and in their voices when they first saw the beach was wonderful. I loved that the one child did bring his dad the sea shells.  Such a great, happy way to end your broadcast.

Hope you have a wonderful evening and will look forward to your blog and broadcast tomorrow.
Evening, Brian.

Today I only caught a glimpse of President Obama's AARP event, but after seeing the photo from Gawker and the clips over the news, that's just hilarious. I'm sure anyone remotely familiar with the set of Jerry Springer couldn't help but think of that. Thanks for sharing the laughs!

I am finally starting college this Fall at our community college nearby, and I have to say that I am a bit nervous thinking about flu season in a populated environment like college, of course by flu I mean both enfluenza and H2N1. I don't know if there's anything to worry about, but I'd like to know if there is...or what I could do to avoid it. I'm actually going for the placement testing in the morning, and am a little nervous about that as well, having not taken an actual test in a couple of years. I guess more than anything, I'm nervous about the first day of school. I'm hoping it's nothing like my first day of high school all over again. Then again, I'm hoping to have another first day of school after this one.

I wish I could guess what choice of beer President Obama will choose for Thursday's beer date with the three amigos, but I couldn't begin to.

I thought it was very thoughtful of you to mention what would be the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' 80th birthday today. It's unbelieveable what all she went through in her short life. Also very hard to believe it's been ten years since John Kennedy Jr.'s untimely death. Too many lives in the Kennedy family were cut short, but what they all left us with will never die. Just as Senator Ted Kennedy says in one of my favorite quotes...

Your Making A Difference story was very touching. I've always tried never to take anything for granted, not even a beautiful day outside...but there are things like this that everyone needs to see to get beyond the "big picture" and look at everything through the eyes of people like these kids.

Take care and see you tomorrow evening,
-Cary
Hi Brian,
Brought the lap-top on vacation to Niagara Falls,ON so it was great to be able to read your blog. We are here for the World Ballet championships. The TV only has 4 channels so reading that link from Gawker, well my daughter can actually experience that for 5 days. We do get NBC however:)The hotel looked nice on the internet. We must be paying for the great location.
It is so warm and humid here. Hopefully NYC and The Jersey Shore is getting the same kind of weather.
I hadn't seen the AARP event but Jerry Springer does come to mind.
Off to the "Maid of the Mist".....will watch you later and would even if we had 200 channels!
