Hollywood offers up some reality programming

by Carl Quintanilla, NBC News

Carl Quintanilla, CNBC News Anchor & CorrespondentA fascinating chapter in recent American politics is coming to an end tonight, as Sarah Palin officially steps down as governor of Alaska. The question is: is she about to open a NEW chapter – with her plans to write books, speak out in favor of political candidates, and form a new center-right coalition?

Either way, tonight brings the kind of homespun theatre we've come to expect from the governor, complete with a Twitter message about the country music she's been listening to in her "camper full of kids & coffee." Our Norah O'Donnell is in Fairbanks tonight and will bring us the latest on what's next for Sarah Palin, and we'll talk all things politics with CNBC's John Harwood.

We'll also highlight the ongoing drought in Texas, which has gone from being a very serious situation to a critical one. Lakes and rivers are drying up and cattle are going thirsty. In some cases, water levels are so low, cars and motorcycles once dumped at the bottom are now at the top and being towed. NBC's Janet Shamlian brings us the pictures and tells us how long experts say the situation will last.

Finally, I don't know if you've noticed, but Hollywood has been incorporating the nation's weak economy, lately, into their storylines. From "30 Rock" to "The Simpsons," characters are dealing with the same hardships as everyday Americans. Has Hollywood finally "gotten real"? And what happened to the escapism it has typically provided in past downturns? NBC's Chris Jansing reports from Hollywood.

We hope you'll tune in and join us.

Still pushing the Gates incident as a news story? Shame!
Carl,

Good show!

I’m always delighted to see you anchor Nightly News.  (I no longer watch CNBC  - can’t handle Joe or the constant slant defending “super capitalism.”)

Your on-air delivery is elegant, smooth, you’re simply a credit to the network (I worked in TV for a decade in another lifetime!)

I hope they've got you in their sights for a permanent Nightly News assignment!
That was a Somerville police car responding to a call in the story about the Cambridge PD.  Oops.
Good Evening Mr.Quintanilla, Nice to see you this evening for the broadcast. You always do a great job on Weekend Today! Now on to the broadcast. First of all the report by Mr.Viqueira concerning the negotiations on healthcare reform. It appears it will not meet the August deadline before the recess and there is not enough votes to get it passed. As Secretary of State Clinton stated there is no longer time to wait for reform and at least they are convinced there is a problem. The public deserves some continuing deliberation on the bill and hopefully something will get passed to help the public with the rising costs of healthcare and the system itself.

On another note the report by Janet Shamlian about the extreme drought in Texas shows the conditions are trememdously serious. So many lakes down so very low vehicles are being found and towed away, plus boat docks up on rocks. The scorched earth drying up crops is not helping farmers and the cattle having little to graize it making the farmers sell off the herds. I hope the areas effected receive some very much needed rain soon.
It is quite and acheivement for Lance Armstrong to come in third at the Tour de France at the age of 37yrs old. Even though that age is definitely far from being old at all the effort needed to compete in the bike race is incredible and he did a great job.
Good Race Lance!

The piece by Anne Thompson concerning the carp becoming a major problem for fisherman was interesting. Seeing the fish jumping out of the water right into the boats does help those wanting to catch them, but not for the other fish in the area being driven out by the carp. The electric fence with all the cables far beneath the surface at least doesn't kill the carp, but keep them out. Especially of the Great Lakes region. Hopefully, the fish will be kept out of the areas needed for fisherman to catch other types of fish for their business.

It is cloudy and rainy at the moment, but maybe from here in Georgia one will be able to see the International Space Station go across the night sky later on this evening. It is always interesting to see these types of things.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Quintanilla. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO

I could never use the title Politician for Sarah Palin - she is a media/celebrity wanna be.  No legitimate politician would leave their office mid term for no reason.

She will never be elected to another office, anywhere.
