The fourth star

I'm thrilled to have just received an advance galley copy of the upcoming book, "The Fourth Star," by David Cloud and Greg Jaffe. It profiles four contemporary U.S. Army Generals: Casey, Abizaid, Chiarelli and Petraeus. It just so happens that I've come to know all four men (in varying degrees) and have found myself at the same social and public events with several of them, in addition to having spent time with each of them individually in Iraq. I have my feelings about each of them -- a collection of my own observations and those of other former senior officers whose opinions I trust. Every American generation has its own military commanders -- and in the post-Vietnam, desert-and-mountain warfare era of today, these 4-stars will be among the big military names, and will be much-dissected. In the few minutes I've had the book in my hands, I've already speed-read a chapter or two, and there are already some familiar scenes, names and circumstances in these pages.  I can't wait to get to the rest of it.

If you are -- shall we say -- less than riveted by the Sotomayor hearings, the author of this piece is of like mind -- and it may sum up your mindset as well. We'll cover it tonight, along with the missing piece of fuselage, and our popular Making A Difference segment. We hope you can join us.

Brian, don`t you think when you announce to the world how many people who are associated with the subject of your stories  make over 900K that you
in all fairness  should announce how much you make, and how many people with GE and affiliates make that amount and more. Cmon, be fair.
Hi Brain,

It's sad that protesters of any kind would interrupt the hearings of Judge Sotomayer or anyone. The Congresswomen and men are trying to get something accomplished on our behalf. That's what we pay them for. Take it outside, as they say. Sen. Graham from our state here in S.C. always shows what an idiot he is. He must have been a grand inquisitor in a previous life. I know they have to ask tough questions but he doesn't have to continue asking stupid questions.

May as well take this chance to report on Gov. Sanford and then go to your good news. The local NBC affiliate repoted (if I heard correctly), that Gov. Sanford's Chief of Staff tried to get in touch with the Gov. fourteen times throughout June 19-22. He finally responded on the 23rd. Gosh, I wonder what he was doing?

Your "Making a Difference" segment was great as usual. Sister Bridget has done some wonderful work over the last fifty yrs. There's no telling how many people she's helped and will continue to do so.

Brian, your purple striped tie was superb. BTW, I would join your billions of fans on your Facebook page, but my computer is slow enough. And not all of us want to have a Facebook account. So the moderators (have they all gone on vacation?) will have to post our words of praise throughout our comments on the news.

Have a beautiful evening. We'll see you tommorrow night.

Vicki

Good Evening Mr.Williams, Another great broadcast this evening! The book you mentioned in the post that you are reading called "The Fourth Star" by David Cloud profiling the four US Army Generals sounds extremely interesting and you are so fortunate to have spent time with each of them. I will definitely look forward to getting the book from Amazon. Now on to the broadcast. First of all the report by Mr.Costello about the Southwest Flight 2294 having part of the roof of the plane rip open during flight causing a large hole. Quite scary to hear the accounts of the passengers hearing a loud rush and losing pressure in the cabin while the masks dropped down for them to breathe. It was good the plane landed safely in West Virginia and everyone was safe. Yet,there definitely needs to be better inspections done on these 737's to make sure this never happens again.
On another note the report by Stephanie Gosk from Great Britain about loss of so many British Troops in Afghanistan was simply heartbreaking. Seeing the long line of hearses brings tears and knowing how so very young the soliders. All the people coming out to pay their respects and honoring the fallen soldiers is heartwrenching. One hopes the conflict will end very soon and all the troops can come home. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of the fallen soldiers.

The report by Janet Shamlian from Texas about the severe high temperatures and the drought conditions certainly showed dry devastation all over the State. Lakes down extremely low, corn crops dried up and cattle eating on withered pastures is disturbing scenes and one hopes the State will receive adequate rainfall very soon. I hope the temperatures come down out of the triple digits too.

Must have been exciting for Mr.Todd to be on Air Force One and see Willie Mays! It is great President Obama is throwing out the first pitch!

The "Making A Difference" segment by Mr.Alexander abotu Sister Haase was truly inspiring. Sister Haase has done such great work helping people all over the world and she is certainly bringing much hope and joy to the wellness program treating people for chronic diseases. Bringing love, hope and friendship to so many people. Very Nice Piece!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra Safe and Well Richard!
Congratulations to You Richard for receiving two Emmy nominations for your report "Tip of the Spear"! Well Deserved! WOO! HOO!
And to You Mr.Williams and all of NBC for recieving 10 Emmy Nominations is All! WOO! HOO! All of you do and EXCELLENT JOB!!
XOXO

Hi Brian:

Another great blog and broadcast today.

I only got to see a glimpse of the confirmation hearings today but I saw that she was answering the questions with ease and precise statements. I thought Graham was jerky as usual.  Thanks for the link on your blog to The New Republic regarding Confirmations. I printed it out so I can read it tonight.  I hope that they do not drag this on for too long.

How scary it must have been for the people and crew of the Southwest flight.  Such a great job the pilot did in landing that plane safely.  I'm glad to see an investigation is being done as to why and how this happened.  It amazes me how and airline like Southwest could remain flying when they had been fined 4 moths ago for inadquate inspections in 2007 to the tune of 7.5 millon. And then to hear that there is a possibility they were buying off the inspectors. You would think that the airline would be under such strict inspections since that day. I guess we'll have to wait for the report to find out how and why this happened.

I know the police are saying this was a robbery but for 7 men, one from the Airforce Special Ops and National Guard to do what they did for a home robbery just does not sit well with me.  There has to be something else invovled.  They were after something in that house to work, train and practice for a month before executing the invasion.  Not sure if we will ever know the realy truth.

I know that it is great that Goldman Sachs is posting 33% quarterly earnings and their employees will each get $900,000 this year but Brian, how does this benefit all of us tax payers that bailed them out?  Can you explain it?  To me we are still in the same place as we were yesterday except for those lucky employees.

I saw the web only report on MSNBC about the 2 year old, Hannah Clark, now 16, who is definitely a miracle.  It shows what our technology is doing each day. To have another heart grafted to her own heart and living like that for so long.  Then to have it removed and find that her own heart is now functioning and she is doing fine at the age of 16.

This weather is so strange.  Here in California we are still having record heat.  Where I live which is in the San Francisco/Bay Area, it is very close to the ocean but you would not know it today.  Hayward is 96 today.  This is just not normal for us and it is taking its toll on everyone.

Your "Making A Difference" story about the "Flyning Nun" was wonderful as usual.  What wonderful experiences she has had throughout her travels and what joy, hope and encouragement she has brought to so many people suffering with diseases.  Her passion for llife as she said has kept these patients spirits up and has helped them in so many ways not not give up and keep going on.  It was so great to see the smiles on each of the patient's faces when she came around them.  God Bless her for what she has done and her accomplishmens.

Brian, I loved your blog today.  Your enthusiasm over the new book "The Fourth Star" was delightful.  You should really think about writing a book about your adventures, the people you have been lucky to meet, and come to respect along with all of your observations.  If it is anything like your blogs each day it is certain to be a best seller.

Thanks again for a great broadcast.  I will look forward to tomorrow's blog and broadcast.

Very nice tie tonight.

Good evening, Brian.

First of all, thanks for the broadcast this Tuesday evening. Really great Making A Difference story tonight. Thank you for all of it.

Also, thank you for sharing this article from The New Republic. I really enjoyed it! While I'm really not a huge fan of so-called "reality shows" (with a couple exeptions), it was interesting to learn that in a sense I was watching a reality show today of the Sotomayor hearings, which really would make a lot of sense. Though they are hardly as riveting as it was (or is) to watch Senator Ted Kennedy. After watching HBOs wonderful documentary "Teddy: In His Own Words", I could certainly see one of the reason's why they call him the "Lion of the Senate". Besides, of course, the reason being all of the experience he's had over his 47 years in the senate, just seeing him in that hot seat is a thrill to watch. I hope his health is improving. The last I heard , his cancer was in remission, but I haven't heard much since then.

While I'm sure the democrats are anxious for the Sotomayor hearings to come to an end, I'm sure no one is more ready than Judge Sotomayor herself. Especially after being put on the spot by Lindsay Graham this afternoon. I think it's pretty remarkable that she hasn't lost any amount of her temper during these hearings.

It just blew my mind hearing Southwest Airlines flew their planes with cracks, and failed to inspect their planes back in 2007. The thought is just incomprehensable, especially after hearing of so many tragic accidents this year. People who fly, put their trust in the airlines. I hope that the safety of airlines only continues to improve greatly over the months and years, so that everyone who flies is more comfortable with giving them their trust.

Good night, and take care,
-Cary
Brian;
Re 'Ban smoking in the military
I was very surprised to see Morning Joe's Meka stubbornly refusing to see points by her colleagues and just repeating that she is right. If tobacco helps our troops cope with the constant threat of death, the smells of the dead and dying then why not? They have earned the right. Would Meka be capable of refusing a dying soldier a cigarette on the grounds it was bad for him. Now if this anti smoking brigade was really serious they should concentrate on bringing our military home. Look how money that would save in medical costs.
Stu Thomas
Hi again Brian,

I agree with Stu. I didn't know how to put it why I saw the segment. I think restaurants, bars, and other places should ban smoking. If a person can't wait til after a meal to light up, they definitely need help. But the military is a whole different matter. My brother's in Iraq. He doesn't smoke. But if he wanted to, I would hate to think what would happen if he couldn't. Drinking would be an entirely different matter. One of the reasons people smoke is to reduce stress. Don't you (meaning everybody) think the soldiers need as many stress relievers as possible?

Vicki
Did you or did you not cover the death of Ed Freeman, Medal of Honor winner?  He died June 25th 2009.  I know that you and Tom are sticklers for that sort of thing but I don't remember hearing about Ed.  I appologize if you covered it and I missed it.
