Another loss

By Lester Holt, NBC News anchor

We've lost a lot of famous names over the past week: Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson – and today we were surprised to hear another household name has died, TV pitchman Billy Mays. Like “The King of Pop,” he was just 50 years old.

Billy Mays certainly didn't travel in the show business circles of the others, make movies or records, but he had taken his rightful place as a cultural icon. If you've spent any time in front of the television the last few years, you've probably seen his commercials, pitching everything from cleaning products to kitchen knives. Even if the name isn't familiar, chances are his distinctive loud voice is. We'll tell you more about him, as well as a rough commercial airline flight he was on yesterday that could be connected to his death.

We're also reporting new developments in the investigation into Michael Jackson's death. In addition, we’ll have my conversation with one of the victims who will speak at tomorrow's sentencing of crooked financier Bernie Madoff.

I hope you will join us for NBC Nightly News.

Hi Lester,

Hope you're having a good day. I spent most of the day watching Michael Jcackson videos on MTV2. There were some that I'd never seen. It was amazing to see the genius in him and it's sad that people can't concentrate on that and not the other.
Toure, the writer who was on your special edition of Today Show yesterday gave us so much info. I didn't realize who Tour was until I watched you interviewing him. I checked him out on the various websites and saw that he's written extensively about musical artists. I'm going back to reading the Rolling Stone magazine because of him and I want to read his books. I wrote Brian to see if we could possibly have Toure on NBC more often to be a music commentator. What do you think?

I'll be watching you soon to see what's going on in the world, besides Gov. Sanford. I didn't think he and his story would make the New York Times, but I can understand the stakes involved in politics, especially here in S.C.

Bye for now. Have a great evening and week.

Vicki
Good Evening Mr.Holt, A fine broadcast this evening. First of all the report by Mr.Aspell concerning the pullout of US troops on June 30,2009 from cities within Iraq including Baghdad after six years of war. It is the first step in sending all the troops home by the year 2011. So much violence has occurred this week with around 250 people killed in attacks and one hopes that after the troops pullout there will not be a spike in violence by extremists. The US troops being on bases within Iraq as stated in the report will still patrol the streets and look for roadside bombs, but the Iraqi security forces are responsible for manning checkpoints and other factors of security to the region. One hopes for all the citizens of the region things goes well and there are not any violent attacks. Hopefully, peace will befall the region.
The crisis in Iran shows continuing protests to the election results and the system of government in the country. The government doesn't appear to be giving in the protests and stays with the results. Time will tell if any changes are made at all.
On another note the report by Rehema Ellis concerning the sudden passing away of Billy Mays at only 50years old is certainly a surprise and shock. The impact of the US Airways landing causing him to be struck in the head was so very tragic and awful. He will be remembered as a really excellent pitchman for any sort of product. Such a tragic loss and ones thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
Many questions as to the cause of Michael Jackson's death as reported by Mr.Cowan.
Hopefully, the questions will be answered in the coming days.
Meanwhile, many tributes planned in his honor by music artists who were inspired and influenced by his work.
Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO

Dear NBC Nightly News,

over the past days the news over the death of four famous celebrities have flooded media's all around the world. Their art of touching people's life's and influencing the flow of the world in way that nobody could have ever imagined was undoubtedly remarkable.

Though, they have not been the only ones who have lost their life's this week. Servicemen in Iraq and Afghanistan lost their life's this week for that very reason that the four celebrities mentioned above could perform their art of entertainment freely and independently. Those men and women's recognition was lost this very week.

I simply ask for a moment of tribute to recognize their life's, families and friends. I believe we owe it to them and to every soldier, marine, airmen, seamen, and coastguard men to show them that we as nation never forget what man and women in the uniform of this country can do and that the people behind the flag will never forget their service.

Respectfully,

Danny Miller

Hi again Lester,

I was able to watch your broadcast and watch you on "Dateline."

So they're changing the story about Michael Jackson's dr., that he stayed with Michael and accompanied him to the hospital in the ambulance? I hope that's the case. The tabloids are going to have a field day with his death for yrs. I think someone pointed out on "Dateline" that there were two sides to Michael, and he had gotten to the point of literally not being comfortable in his own skin.

I also saw on "Dateline" the twin girls and their parents who were tryiing to save them. Their mother and father are extremely strong. I wish the best for them and hope there can be an update about their progress.

Lester, I really wish NBC would consider Brain and you being co-anchors throughout the week. I can't imagine how stressful it is for you to be on "The Today Show" and then be on "the Nightly News" and everything else you do. But maybe you wouldn't have it any other way. I hope you get plenty of rest and take care of yourself. I'm sure you do.

I hope you have a great July 4th weekend. Can't someone sit in for you? Well, I'll be settled in at Cherokee by then and will be able to watch your broadcasts. My family has a ton of poetry books there and I'll try to find you something special. I hope the moderators realize by now what it means and what it doesn't mean when I post it, for God's sake.

So, have a good week til then.

Vicki

What a week! 30 years of my culture wiped out in 5 days!
when it comes to the dog days of summer - what dog are we going to use ?
Lester,
Your Broadcast blew my mind, and you aced
the interviews.  You are the best in the
business, which I have said once before.
And I mean it  NBC cannot do better than you.

Michael Jackson left us great music and something else.

He left us memories of Peter Pan, the boy who didn't want to grow up, who wanted to live in Neverland, who didn't know about finances.

It brings to mind the politicians and media commentators who appear to also suffer from arrested development, who seem to live in a Neverland, where spending (personal and national) can exceed income.

How many parents today inhabit their own Neverland, where plastic surgery makes them look young enough to be mistaken for their children, where they can actually date the friends of their children, where they sanction whatever their children want to do...because to do otherwise would be to leave Neverland.

Michael Jackson wasn't the only adult living in Neverland. Some of them are still there.

Lester,

Time Magazine FDR Cover Story

Regarding the young protesters:  "That they are now a global inspiration is a revolution all by itself."

Further, "Whether or not to negotiate now, that
the Iranian government has disgraced itself in the
eyes of the world, it is sure to be a defining
moment for the Obama Administration."

Have a nice day!!!
Famous names  of the past has been vanishing now but the issue about michael.. I myself believe that its because of the medicines he take. As what the news says that can be the reactions of the medicine.
While there have been some interesting items on Michael Jackson, enough already!  Please cover the cap and trade bill and how it is going to hurt our economy and really hurt the poor.  Let's remember what is really important for a news show.
Hi again Lester,

I don't like to think that anyone feels excluded. I don't think that was the point anyway. You and Brian have a lot of fans. And I don't think that either of you prefers this one over that one. I have never tried to be in competition with anybody. What's the point? I don't consider anyone my enemy unless they attack me personally or in any other way. And I definitely don't want to play mind games.

So why can't we all just do our own thing and get over it, whatever "it" is?

Vicki

P.S. In my mind, I've already moved to Cherokee. Bye bye Greenville.

Hi Lester:
I believe Michael's innocence cause the media gaints like you, Brain and others pundits twist his lifestlye & behavior into something that was not true (on the non-musical sized). Like most often of what happens in American often (they) demonize and try to destroy what we don't understand and the one with the mic controls the headlines, for the most part. Why is major media parroting the same poison about Michael's breif legal issues of which he was found innocent. Was it not also revealed the some, if not all, of the witnesses were gold diggers or exploiters. But that's not been mentioned in any of your discussions to bring up this dark period. Where are the polls that gives the media liberty to paint Michael guilty? Most people don't believe he was guilty but I never hear that from your dark comments. The media basically stop being journalist years ago- they are as voltures and parrots-anything to sell a story or hold attention. Excuse my spelling & blutness but I find no value in stirring flith/lies when life/truth is so much needed in these dark times.
