Details emerging in Air France crash

By Lester Holt, NBC News anchor

I was in Paris earlier this week covering the Air France disaster, including a memorial service for families of the victims at Notre Dame Cathedral. Their grief was compounded by the fact that no one knew where their loved ones were. Outside the cathedral, Yvonne Lazouett told us, "I don't know where my husband is," and she explained that was why it was so important for the families to all be together.

I thought of Yvonne, and the rest of those families this afternoon when we learned the bodies of two male passengers had been recovered from the ocean, along with a briefcase and boarding pass from the flight. After several frustrating false leads in the search for signs of the doomed flight, it appears searchers are finally on the right track. Hopefully all of the families of the 228 victims will soon find closure in knowing for certain the fate of their loved ones. We're covering today's discovery at sea, as well as the puzzling electronic trail the doomed Airbus left in its final minutes, and what those automated messages may tell investigators about the crash.

We’ll also be covering the 65th anniversary of D-Day. We'll have the president's message to veterans of the invasion, including the poignant story of a survivor who made one last trip to Omaha beach this week – but won't be coming home.

I hope you'll join us tonight for NBC Nightly News.

A backpack and a blue airplane seat was also found.
Good Evening Mr.Holt,Great to see you for this evening's broadcast. I watched the coverage of the 65th Anniversary of D-Day and it was extremely moving. President Obama's speech really honored all those brave men who fought the battle on D-Day. Now on to the broadcast. First of all the report by Stephanie Gosk concerning the search for wreckage of the Air France Flight 447 and the recovery of two male bodies along with some luggage and a briefcase. The search area is narrowing and hopefully the subs will be able to find the black boxes. Yet, for family members that lost loved ones it is so very tragic because so many have not been found. It appears the speed sensors were not working properly sending false information about air speeds to the pilots. Also, the bad weather being a factor in the crash.
The report by Mr.Costello showed the plane either going too fast or too slow in this terrible weather could have caused the crash, yet the investigators may never fully know the reason. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families who lost loved ones.
The report by Mr.Todd concerning President Obama's speech at Normandy which brought much emotion and his speech in Cairo truly showed a message of peace. President Obama's speech honoring the fallen was emotional with a great tribute to the brave men who fought so hard for freedom. Seeing the Veterans at the ceremony was so moving and the thousands of white crosses marking the final resting place for brave, heroic soldiers brings tears. God Bless All Who Serve in the Military!

The piece by Mr.Brokaw about the two brothers named David and Gene whose father flew a  B-26 plane during D-Day showed how the two sons learned so much about their father and his mission. The maps, notes, flight path and how he led a squadron to protect the infantrymen really brought to mind what a brave and dedicated soldier their father was during the war. It was nice the two sons are financing the expansion of the museum honoring D-Day and feeling honored by their father and his legacy.
The report by Mr.Allen concerning the Muslim reaction here in the United States to the President's speech really showed President Obama brought hope for them and the better understanding of the culture with no stereotyping for all the people of the region. Learning more and lessoning bad interpretations of people will be a first step in a path to peace.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO
65 years ago as a 12 yr old boy I got off a train in DC.  The paper boys on the platform were hawking the papers on the invasion.  A couple of days later at Ft. Belvor I saw the first invasion films.
To this day it is a strong memory.
Lester, I  tuned in to the Today Show before
going to the ballgame, so I started the morning
off right.  I found the "love chart" interesting.
Speaking of which, you are the consummate professional and off the charts.  Kyle was
awesome Saturday, and hit the ball over the
fence.  Won one game, lost another.  I learned
more about twitter from him, but I am not sure
if I fully understand it. A fun day, and I
got a tan.  I copied President Obama's speech,
16 pages, and I was one of those who loved it.
I did not know his Uncle was in WW2 until I
listed to Tom Brokaw's interview with him.
Well, I suppose, it is true, you learn
something new every day.

Hi Bro. Lester,  (Sun.)

I hope that you had a nice time in Paris and relaxed a little.

I'm back from my little vacation in Cherokee. One of your biggest fans, my great aunt "Lil" is doing great.
I'll be returning throughout the summer and hope to move there eventually.
Lester, you really should visit the Great Smokies, if you haven't. With all of the fog rising up from below, it looks and feels like Heaven.

I know or I think that you're a big fan of aviation. I hope they find out what happened to flight 447 soon.
But that won't change things for the families. Maybe it will offer some sort of closure though. And if they could find something for every family or loved one, as simple as a wallet. It's just hard to imagine.

If you're still in Paris as I write this, (I see that you anchored on Sat.which I missed) maybe you will be able to see The First Family. That would be great. You have a pleasant personality like everyone in that beautiful family. You should get access to interview the girls. I was hoping you would be the first to show us Bo up close, but that went to Ms. Nora O'Donell.

I'm going to get some sleep before I start getting giddy here. It's about that time.

The tie rating begins again. I was trying to see how many striped ties Brian has. Now I've gotten interested in how many navy suits Pres. Obama has.
But don't forget, pastels, Lester.

Bye for now.

Vicki

Hi again Lester, (Mon.)

Problem solved, sort of. I checked out the Mother's Day special that you did a few yrs. ago with your mother in Jamaica. There was some insistence on the part of Aunt "Lil" that you have american indian ancestry, in particular Cherokee. I called her a couple of hrs. ago and told her that you are of Jamaican descent. She said,(paraphrasing here),
"That's good, but he's still Cherokee whether he likes it or not." So you can consider yourself, and Brian too, an honorary Cherokee, bestowed onto you by  "Lil", Bro. Lester.

Maybe I won't get in trouble for sending you this little poem I found in, Trouble The Water, 250 yrs. of African American Poetry, edited by Jerry W. Ward,
in 1997.

         Word Game

Once upon a time, i a poet transformed myself into a poem
i was very happy
my line was intriguing and audacious
it could take many forms - a gun, a sword, a heart that throbbed
a hand gentle as a kiss
it could express any emotion i sought to convey, as well as i could master it

then one day i was published
now i do not know whether i am a poet writing a poem
or a poem writing a poet

What do you think?

See you Sat. And give us a heads up as to what project you're working on next, if you can lester.

Hi again Bro. Lester, ( Tues.)
I hope you're having a great week. I was looking over the old posts and realized that your son had graduated and I wasn't here to respond. I really don't remember what happened. But belated congratulations and it's easy to see that you're a great dad.
I'm hanging out on the computer and I found something you might like.( I hope I don't get sued from copying all of these wonderful things. I'm definetly not taking credit for anything.)

   What the Stars Are Like

There are different opinions about the stars. Some say that they are balls of light, others say they are humans, but most of our people say they are living creatures covered with luminous fur or feathers.
One night a hunting party camping in the mountains noticed two lights like large stars moving along the top of a distant ridge. They wondered and watched until the lights disappeared on the other side. The next night, they saw the lights moving along the ridge, and after discussing the matter decided to go and see what was going on. In the morning, they went to the ridge and after searching some time, they found two strange creatures very large (making a circle with outstretched arms), with round bodies covered with fine fur or downy feathers, from which small heads stuck out like terrapins. As the breeze played upon these feathers, showers of sparks flew out.
The hunters carried the strange creatures back to the camp. They kept them several days, and noticed that every night they would grow bright and shine like great stars, although by day they were only balls of grey fur. The creatures kept very quiet, and no one thought of their trying to escape when, on the seventh night they suddenly rose from the ground like balls of fire and were soon above the tops of the trees. Higher and higher the creatures went, while the wondering hunters watched, until at last they were only two bright points of light in the dark sky, and the hunters knew that they were stars.

I hope you like it, Lester. I mind end up going to jail for these little jewels. But we only live once or twice at the most.

Vicki
Hi Lester, (Wed.)

We've just had another horrendous hate crime, extremism continues to rear it's ugly head. But then again, any crime, in particular a hate crime, is a lash out at humanity.
It's hard to believe an eighty nine yr. old would still have that much hate in him. And it's sad to believe that people would want to cause violence in a place that represents the worst crimes against humanity. That in and of itself is sacrilegious. But I guess he was getting rid of a lot of hate in one fell swoop.

I am listening to a retired criminologist on MSNBC. He noted the rise in supremacists. And the KKK is still lurking around here in the south, my observations. I have a very distant relative who brags about the fact that he belongs to a chapter and that they even have a black member. And this distant relative sees it as a normal way for people to live.

I can't believe I'm stuck in a place like this. But then I've been to Phili., where my husband is from, been to Arizona and Fla. It's not that much different. Narrow minds flourish with hate in any environment, even in places you'd least expect, like cults that pass for religion. I am so not going there now...
I don't know if you're back from Paris yet, but I'm hoping you're getting rest. I really don't know how you and Brian do it. And I definitely don't know how you keep going on weekends. I wish to God that you and Brian could be co-anchors during the week.

Anyway, I've hit onto a great website,(where the other quotes came from), www.brainyquote.com :

"I wish they'd had electric guitars in cotton fields back in the good old days. A whole lot of things would have straightened out."  Jimi Hendrix

Have a great evening, Lester.

Vicki
Hi Lester,  (Thur.)

This may be the last comment I get to post until the weekend, considering how things work with the blog.

I went out and took care of business today. I talked to somenone that I've known for awhile. After everything that's going on with the right wing extremists, I finally realized how bigoted this person is. He doesn't believe in the killings that are taking place. It's just that he made particular comments and I can see now, where here and there he's said things that made me wonder. Now I know.

I don't know if you like Bob Dylan, but he'll be coming to Greenville,(here) on July 29. I can't wait to see him. He represents a lot of change that went on in the late 60's and early 70's.

I've only seen the documentary of Woodstock and wasn't quite old enough to go. But if I had been, I would have taken off like a bat out of hell from the south. I did make to Arizona when I was 18, and tried to hitch a ride to Calif. Is that where you're from? I wish that we could have been able to cross paths long enough just to enjoy a Coke together. I wish they would bring back that Coke commercial; something about teaching the world to sing.

Lester, Brian wore a lavendar tie last night. I first thought, "No, that Lester's color." But it's a tie now. You were the first to get an 11 though.

Hopefully I'll get to see you on The Today Show this weekend. When I talk to Aunt "Lil" , I'll see if she's going to be watching you too. That would be a  redundant question though. The woman would probably mother you to death if she ever got to meet you.

Listen Lester, I hope that I didn't insult you in the way that I phrased what she said. She didn't mean that you shouldn't be of Jamaican descent. She meant that it's good but you also have that "blood brother"
feel about you.

Anyway, see you this weekend and hope that you've gotten some rest.

Vicki

Hey,

It's you know how. I'm soo embarassed that I've been misspelling "lavender."

Vicki, bye Lester
Lester,

Mark June 29, Monday on your calendar.  There
will be a Federal Court hearing on the isssue
of Pres. Obama's birth certificate.  Some anticipate
more fireworks on  The Fourth.  In any case, I
hope it is put to rest, one way or the other.
Americans need closure.  I will continue writing
my novel with one eye on the calendar and then
when it is resolved it's full speed ahead and I
am putting politics behind me.  Of course, I will
be an informed citizen, but I want my life back. Anyway, AOL is spinning off and  that takes care of
that. I'll get back into circulation and have fun.
Bye and good luck.
Phyllis
