Today's shooting death of a Kansas physician who performs abortions exposes the raw nerve that represents the social issue of our time. Without a doubt, it will lead to some passionate conversations and exchanges in the days to come. On our broadcast tonight, we will tell you what we know about today's attack in Wichita on late-term abortion provider Dr. George Tiller, who survived another shooting attack back in 1993. We're also working to learn more about the suspect who was taken into custody hours later.

We'll also take you through how tomorrow's bankruptcy filing by General Motors is likely to proceed, and what the broad impact of this might be across the American landscape.

Also, our chief science editor Robert Bazell is coming on with me tonight to share some news from a major cancer conference that you’ll want to hear.

Thanks for checking in, I hope you'll watch the Sunday edition of NBC Nightly News.

Hi Lester,

I just checked to see what you'll be broadcasting on tonight.

I hoped that shooting drs. who performed abortions wouldn't start up again.
I believe that women have the right to choose, but didn't know that there are drs. performing late term abortions.
It still didn't give a person the right to kill him.

You're right. This is going to add fuel to the fire and cause a lot of debate. I can almost hear Rode vs. Wade being overturned.
We take a step forward and two steps back.  See you tonight Lester.

Vicki
Hi Lester it was sad news to hear the doctor got killed by those who fight for the right to life. A little strange how murder is ok but a woman who is raped had to have a child, or one that will die. Strange times we live in.

Today we watched old confirmation hearing on Clarence Thomas and he had a close vote to be confirmed. Now to all the ladies in the house, Sanda Day O'Connor wasn't supported as a Justice by the GOP but President Reagan didn't care. So as loyal Party members to the President, Justice O'Connor was confirmed with a perfect score of 99 to 0. I did learn how Justice Gingsburg not only raised two kids and cared for her sick husband all while getting her degrees and writing a book. Now who says a woman can't do everything at once. Most of the current Justices used their immigrant family background during the hearings as things to look to. Now with all the race talk one can remember Justice Thurgood Marshall got confirmed with a 61 to 11 vote while 20 Law Makers didn't see the need to intergate the court yet. It was nice to see the hearing when most of our current Law Makers had black hair back then. VP Joe Biden even looked young.

GM will become a strong company with new leadership and direction. Things have a way of working out and our country is going in the right direction. A smart move would be to invest in GM when the company gets a smart wise CEO who looks to the future and not the pass.

Things seem to be moving along with the recall of Govenor Terminator. When you can no longer trust the Govenor, progress doesn't happen. Now Arnie is lost to correct the mess he made so he's looking to take from the poor, children and seniors. That's about the bottom and California wont stand for it. Arnie just might be gone by the time I get back from vacation.

Have a great and safe Sunday

Best to Lisa, Laurel, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Lori, Anna, Dixie, Ginni, Vickie, Matt and all the regulars on this blog.
P.S.

Lester,

I meant Roe vs. Wade. I just now had to read up on it since it will probably be overturned after 35 yrs. It's one of those things people take for granted.

* Moderators, Brian, Lester, etc., Please don't allow commenters to be personally attacked for their beliefs on this matter, on either side, by other commenters. Isn't that one of the rules?

Today is four yrs. of great blogs, posts, comments.

Thanks

Vicki

Hi again Lester,

I just want to thank you for your anchoring over the last four days. You're a class act. I wish that you could join us on Weds. along with Sat. and Sun., but I know that you're only one man. In a way,I wish you and Brian could co-anchor five days a week for a one hr. broadcast. Maybe some day.

I can see a late term abortion happening ONLY if a woman's life is in danger. That's the only reason, in my very personal opinion. But I hope that Roe vs. wade will stand.

I can't believe that Nadal lost the French Open even if he had been playing Federer. But it would be a mistake if anyone thought that it was over for him.

Queen Elizabeth should have been invited to D-Day ceremonies in Normandy. I didn't know that she had actually served as a volunteer. I'm proud of her for that.

Pres. Obama and First Lady Michelle should be able to come to N.Y. for a show and dinner without being practically mobbed. People should keep their distance out of respect. I feel sorry for the Frist Family in that they will never have many of those quiet moments again.

Lester, I hope that you have a really great weekend and I hope to see you and Amy Sat. morning. If not, I'll see you Sat. evening.

The tie was a 10!

Vicki

Good Evening Mr.Holt, Great to see you this evening for the broadcast. First of all the report by Mr.LeBeau about the final hours for GM before filing for bankruptcy on Monday. Being that it is the largest restructuring of a company on history is staggering and one hopes after the 30 billion and 50 billion to "clean up" the company there will be a positive outcome. The hardest task is to convince buyers to coutn on their automobiles and the warranties because of such tough times. Sad to hear of some of the brands of cars going away on a year or so. As stated in the report the faith in the company is vitally important.
On another note the report by Mr.Yang concerning nominee Justice Sotomayor for the Supreme Court certainly gives a overview of a tough discussion this week as Justice Sotomayor goes to Capital Hill to face questions. As President Obama stated with Mr.Williams the discussion needs to focus om merits and not political silliness. She has much experience on the bench and making vital decisions on many cases. Hopefully, the process will go smoothly this  week on Capital Hill leading to her confirmation to the Supreme Court.

The report by Mr.Maceda about Queen Elizabeth being left out of the invitations to the 65th D-Day Anniversary Commeration was hard to believe since she served hery duty during World War II. Hearing President Obama and President Sarkozy will walk the beach at the American Cemetery certainly should have included the Queen. All the British Soldiers served and died for Queen and Country. Hopefully, Queen Elizabeth will attend in some way.

Nice to know that Big Ben the famous clock in London celebrated 150years!

Sad to learn the last survivor of the Titanic disaster has passed away.

Good to see that President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were able to go to New York to have dinner and see a broadway show! They looked great! And I'm sure they had a wonderful time!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!!
XOXO
Lester-- The Queen's non-invitation to the D-day anniversary ceremony is a definite snub if not an outright insult. She us due an apology and a sincere invitation. What petty behavior on the part of the European leaders!

THE important question for Brian: he interviewed both the president and the vice-president, but was he able to "interview" Bo (read--spend quality time with him)?
I'm really looking forward to Brian's report on Tues. and Wed. nights.

I'm back from vacation having gone by boat up the Hudson River, through the Erie Canal and 4 of the Great Lakes ending in Chicago. The overall impressions I brought back with me were that the Hudson and the Erie Canal are beautiful waterways--but I already knew that. The biggest shock was the dearth of shipping, or even boating, on the Great Lakes. The farther west we went, the fewer ships of any kind to the point where I did not see a single other boat on all of Lk. Michigan. Is this evidence of a severely crippled mid-west economy? It is really weird to have Lk. Michigan all to yourself!

Jackie-- I think you must be headed east to D.C. shortly. Since I know you are interested in both news and history, it occurred to me you might enjoy the Newseum which is dedicated to the news media. I haven't seen it but I hear it is good and will be #1 on my list the next time I get to D.C. Also the American History Museum on the Mall may by now have Michelle Obama's Inaugural Ball gown on display along with all the other First Ladies gowns. They also have many other Presidential artifacts as well as a real neat HUGE steam locomotive complete with the sound of its bell and whistle. Cool. Great museum--and free. Tax dollars you know!

Laurel-- good to have you back and I am sorry to hear of the loss of your grandmother. My condolences go out to you. Please take care.

It's late to do so, but I'd like to weigh in on the hugs issue. I'm for hugs. Humans are strange beings. All the other primates engage in frequent physical contact-- often grooming. With us it's ok to pet your dog, but God forbid you should touch another human. Something is wrong with that.

So a big hug to all! Take care--
A sidebar: I wish someone would teach uber-New-Yorker Andrea Mitchell how to pronounce "Wichita."  In her live reporting on this story, she's pronouncing it "Wichi-duh," voicing the "t" and reducing the "a" to schwa.  It's pronounced "Wichi-taa," with a voiceless "t" and a long "a."  I'm not asking her to put on a phony regional accent - she doesn't need to diphthongize the final "a" - just lengthen the "a" and tap the "t" that precedes it.
Hi Brian / Lester,( Mon.)

Brian, if it's you, welcome back. Lester, if it's you, welcome back. If it's someone else, well, welcome back. I'm going to miss the broadcast. God, I hate it. My day doesn't seem complete without watching the NBC news.

Listen Brian. I hope NBC news will go to an hour broadcast. That's been rumored quite a lot but it seems to have died down. It would be a dream come true for some of us, and also if you and Lester were co-anchors. Please, NBC execs., think about the possibility. You would be unbeatable.

Brian, I'm looking forward to your special at the White House that airs Tues. and Wed. From the clips, we could see that you were having a good time. Thanks to you and NBC for giving us a behind the scence look. Really, why not do that with the Nightly News too?
You could show us how you and Lester prepare for the broadscasts and how things work behind the camera.

Anyway, I'll check back on the computer on your blog... speaking of blog, you guys are starting another yr. of blogs! May 31,2005, 4 yrs. ago if my math serves me right. I think I can figure that out.
Congratulations!!

Bye, for now.

Vicki

P.S. I'll go to Weight Watchers in the mornings from now on. I can't miss your broadcast.
I have just e-mailed Brian Williams and will restate that e-mail here.  I think that there should be a much greater emphasis on contraception in America, since, IF THERE WERE NO UNWANTED PREGNANCIES, THERE WOULD BE NO NEED FOR ABORTIONS !  Why is this apparently such a difficult concept for the "pro-lifers" to understand ?
Jackie is entitled to her opinions, but so are others. Why should only one side of an issue be expressed?
i am from israel, and this kind of thing brings me back,to our darkest day in recent history, when yithac rabin was mardered-after extreme attacks from the right, and we dont even have right wing media....
in israel we had before and still have put  lots of resources to fight right extreme terorisim, its sad that that seems the situation here, becouse i cant see the goverment puting such an effert to stop terorisim form the right
Brian/Lester--how about coverage of the military recruiters who were shot and one killed.  Can you also indicate that the blame was caused by msnbc for its strong support of the miitant muslims and its hate for the American military.  Thank you.
History shows that attitudes common during a particular era proved to be wrong as time passed.
The genocide of American Indians; the enslavement of other human beings; the forced employment of
children; the 12-hour work day six days a week; forced racial segregation and forced military service are some of the practices that are long gone.

The people who enforced these practices or operated the businesses were regarded as upstanding citizens necessary for society’s survival.  Today abortionists are advertised as providing health services. These persons are welcomed as church members and are accepted into society and even admired by some.

Those of us whose hearts weep for the dead babies and for their misguided mothers, can only stand by, watch the slaughter, and hope that someday this barbaric practice will also pass into history.  Until then,
innocent blood continues to flow and small human beings are tossed into the garbage and labeled, “medical waste.”

Pregnancy is a temporary condition that resolves itself. Is killing the baby the only solution to an undesired pregnancy?

The slave traders, the sweat shop owners, the cavalry sent to massacre Indians, the segregationists, the militarists drafting teenagers to die in unnecessary foreign wars, all operated within the law and received society’s approbation.  The unstated goal of all these people was the subjugation of others for personal benefit.  The same can be said of the pro-abortion crowd today:  subjugation of babies by murder for personal benefit.

No small, innocent, unprotected baby died at Tiller’s abortuary today.

I am truly sorry for Dr. Tiller's family, and for the Church.  However, He did something very horrific, killing those poor innocent babies.
But he will be harshly judged by God the Father, where there are no Attorney's pleading his case. The Shroud has no pockets.
Those poor innocent babies are little Angels in heaven with Jesus.  Same on Kansas!!!!!! JJ
Hi Lester/Brian---why did msnbc choose to censor my comment yesterday about the outrage regarding the shooting of the Army recruiter by the muslim?  My guess is that it doesn't comply with your propaganda requirements...right?
Hi Lester, Having been a patient of Dr. Tiller's in 1986, I believe, for myself and my husband, he provided an invaluable service.  I had been married for 5 years and had one healthy child.  I was pregnant a third time and in the beginning of the 6 month it was determined that this child would be born but not even close to being a viable life. I wont go into details but we knew what was going to be because we already had another child, aside from our healthy son,  who had lived in a nursing home on life supports and died at 19 months.  This was going to be the same.  We couldn't put ourselves and this unborn baby through the same suffering,  Dr. Tiller's clinic was the only place we could go to get help.   We arrived there and had to cross screaming picket lines and entered a building that was boarded up because it had been recently bombed.  Inside was a doctor determined to help women in my helpless situation.  My husband and I were shocked and saddened to hear of his murder.  Walk a mile in my shoes and then judge me.
Andrea
Hey Lester,  (Wed.P.M.) (3rd of June)

You may not get this, but thought I would try.

I'm visiting my great aunt here in Cherokee, N.C. Her name is Lil and she's a young 97 yr.s old. She's doing so so.

As I wrote on the blog for Wed.(Ann's), Aunt Lil is crazy about you. I think she has a crush. But she watches the weekend edition of The Today Show and The Nightly News when she can.
She insists that you have Cherokee or other American Indian blood in you. I'm just passing this on. I don't argue with her. No Sir! No Mam!

Anyway, I'll probably be here throughout the week and probably weekend. I told her that I write you sometimes, I didn't tell her exactly how, like this.
As you probably know or may not know, I'm very outspoken on politics, she is too as my grandmother was, but you know some things I discuss, uh, she doesn't need to know. Know what I'm saying here?

Anyway, bye for now, have some fun in Paris.

Vicki, Lil, and gang
