If you've been following this space, then you know Judge Sotomayor was an early favorite of the analysts -- and you also know this piece was an early dissenting voice. I can safely report that the story got the attention of White House staffers, and it was quickly followed by this update by the author  -- including an apology for the original headline, and now the original piece is under great scrutiny, as is the author's possible motives. On another front, the New York Daily News has tried to clean up a biographical/geographic error that journalists keep making in profiles of Judge Sotomayor. Now we all get to watch it play out in the Senate, and the nomination will be among the background issues that the White House will be dealing with during our upcoming extended visit there.

After a Friday off for travel (my thanks to Lester) and a Monday off for the holiday (my thanks to Carl) I'm back on the job, and we hope you can join us for our broadcast tonight.

Brian -

I believe Judge Sotomayor will make a fine Justice.  Yes, women are different from men and often don't agree, but that is not because of intellectual capacity.  Our life experiences are not the same as a man's - they just aren't. Think about it.

I just hope the Congress gives her a fair chance and doesn't turn these hearings into a circus.  That would not be fitting for the serious work that needs to be done.

I know graduation season is not over yet but I am hoping that Nightly News will show a montage of the various commencement speakers from around the country.  The little bit that I saw of Secretary Gates at West Point was very poignant.
hello all
Looks like President Obama is making the Supreme Court look like America. The Senate confirmed every Bush appointee by saying it's the Presidents choice. Now we'll see the lack of respect for President Obama's choice. We've seen an Attorney General lie under oath 72 times and a Vice President that acted as President for 8 years. Justice Alito is still sending thank you letters to the Bush supporters and Chief Justice is looking for a quick raise in salary as Americans are in a Recession. Let's hope the World doesn't look to the US right as as an example.

North Korea is jealous no one is paying attention. Iran is using the Obama campaign plan in hopes of a new President. Israel is still made Obama wont bomb Iran and wipe out Palestine. Cheney is fighting for his life and many Bush lawyers will lost their law Licenses. Spain is going forward with the criminal charges as other countries will do the same. Even if the lack of headlines on the truth as it's much worse then we thought. Lies have a way of coming out and we will see and hear things that will shock everyone. Notice how none of the Bush Administration supporters/appointees did or said any to support our troops over the Memorial Day. While sending our troops to the Iraq invasion, allowing torture of innocent detainees and Stop Lock now our troops aren't given a second thought by the Bush Administration.  We will continue to send care packages and emails until every soldier is home, well that just what Military Families do anyway.

see you same time same place
Before all the Libs get on this blog and start accusing Republicans of being racist because of the judge pick, just remember what Demo's did to Thomas, Gonzalus, and tried to accuse Alito of being a racist.Sotomayor is a perfect example of a person living the American dream. That is what Republican's stand for. Work hard, be responsible and keep the Gov. and their money promises, out of personal lifes.
I continue to be concerned and disappointed that on the NBC Nightly News, references to issues related to the H1N1 virus continue to refer to the disease as the "Swine Flu" despite the WHO and CDC changing the name of the virus to H1N1.  I sent an e-mail feedback over a week ago expressing this concern, the night that you reported on the effect that the "Swine Flu" has had upon the pork industry, even though there is no link between eating pork and the disease.  All I received back was a generated reply thanking me for my communication.  So, my question is, why does NBC News insist on continuing to use the "old" name for the disease?  Even NBC affiliate stations now use H1N1.
The boy with cancer won me over when he
told  them to "back off", very gutsy for
a 14 year old.  I empathized with him
despite our age gap.  Three years ago I
had a Christmas surprise which I will not
detail, but my doctor said he thought I
had cancer and other doctors would tell
tell me the same thing.  In so many words
I told him, "I don't wanna hear it."  I
discussed it with my husband and bottom
line I told him I would do it on my own terms.
No chemo or surgery for me.  I researched
"my problem" on line and it made sense to
me that I had a harmonal imbalance. In
the meantime my doctor, a wonderful man who
was much younger than me and had a healthier
lifestyle, passed away which saddened me no
end.  I am not advising people to thumb
their noses at the medical profession, but
in this case I felt I was right, though
another time he was right and saved me from
leg surgery.  Anyway, I would have stuck
up for the boy too had he been my son.  Loved
the story!!!!  And the boy!!!!

Good Evening Mr.Williams, Great to see you back at the newsdesk this evening. I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend! I really enjoyed your appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on Friday! You are always very funny! Also, enjoyed BriTunes segment on Friday too!
Now on to the broadcast. First of all the reports on the new Supreme Court Nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor. The choice is historic being the first Hispanic woman nominated and she has much experience for the job. She is an inspiration especially to the students at her high school. Believing that despite the odds if one does the work one can make a difference in the world. It will be an interesting process towards to confirmation in the summer.
Hearing from Mr.Gregory on the decision of Justice Sotomayor it will be a confirmation battle. The President certainly has a huge amount of issues along with this choice for the Supreme Court. His trip to Saudi Arabia to discuss the Middle East peace plan is always an issue if vital importance to the world as well as the nuclear intentions of North Korea and Iran. Delicate matters of high importance. Interesting to see happen in the coming weeks.

The report by Mr.Tibbles concerning the return of the mother and her son stricken with cancer having returned home was positive news. Hopefully, the cancer can be successfully treated and he will get better.

The "Making A Difference" segment by Mr.Taibbi was another inspirational piece in this series. Seeing young students from New Orleans who were Freshmen when Hurricane Katrina hit the city now as High School Seniors really showed how much of an impact they had on others through generosity given to their families. Hearing from the young man who stated after leaving New Orleans and coming to Texas to have the generosity of a stranger pay for the meals at a restaurant truly had a effect on him. Both the young men in the piece had great success academically and in their activities in school. Helping other children in other schools and doing fine work. They have made great strides in their lives and helped others too. Very Nice Piece!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Nice to have you back! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO
Good evening, Brian!

It's so great having you back. I hope you had a wonderful long Memorial Day weekend with your family, while Lester and Carl did a great job filling in.

It was great seeing you on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno Friday night. Very good points from you, and some really great laughs as well. (especially loved all of your expressions.) I thought it was a great guest lineup for you, too. Also, thanks for your BriTunes post Friday. Tori Amos has always been a “household listen” for us. One of my greatest memories as a kid is riding in the car with my mom singing along to Tori Amos, Jewel (especially Jewel), and many others like them. Besides growing up with my cousins who've always being a musical bunch, my mom's singing is probably one thing that introduced me to, and has made me love music so much. It's really refreshing and wonderful that you can share your love of music with us, and we can share our love of music with you. There's nothing like sharing your love for music with someone who loves it just as much as you do. I have a weakness for all string instruments (including pianos, if not especially). And by accident I came across a beautiful cover of “I'm On Fire” by Tori Amos, about a month ago. It's a really beautiful take on the song. I love the original, and wasn't expecting the cover to be as great as it happens to be. I love Tori Amos because she is so unique, her music has always stood out in the crowd...  I'm not forgetting all of the other musicians you told us about, thank you for introducing us to them!

And of course, thank you for tonight's broadcast! I hope you have a great week!

Take Care,
-Cary
Hi Brian, welcome back! I hope you and your family had a nice Memorial Day weekend.
Lester and Carl did a great job as usual.

I don't know that much about Sonia Sotomayer, but from her experience in career, education, and upbringing, I think she makes a great nominee. But republicans and some democrats are going to put up a big fight. She was chosen by Bush 41, so time will tell.

The prop. 8 still standing: I still don't understand how in this day and age, and in Ca. how there could be a ban on gay marriage. It seems we take one step forward and two steps back. It's almost as if we have to move into the 21 century kicking and screaming.

Brian, I watched the History Channel documentary that Bob Bazell blogged about. It was extremely interesting. And I just wanted to thank him for giving us a heads up.

The tie, shirt, suit, great, great , great. 10! Although...Lester got an 11 on Sun evening. It was just a matter of that octagon tie and striped shirt.
I'm just playing here. But see you tomorrow evening and have a good great day. We love you and Lester to death in the south.

Vicki
Hi Brian:

So glad you're . Hope you had a great holiday weekend.  Saw you on Jay Leno Friday night and you were outstanding.  You are very entertaining.  Maybe in your next life you'll be a stand-up comedian.  Also thanks for the music video blog  from Burbank and the suggestions.  Looks like you didn't get much rest on that trip.

I am happy with Sotomayor as the choice for the Supreme Court.  Because of her life experiences I believe she will bring a lot of strength to the Court.  She has shown that with a lot of hard work and strong determination you can achieve your goals and be a success.  What an insspiration she will be.  I think we are in for an exciting addition to the Court.

Well, why would anyone think that California would do anything easy.  We never have in the past.  I guess we are now in for another fight on the same sex marriage issue all over agian.  I do not find anything wrong with it but my husband does not agree with me.  I guess while they are debating this issue out agian into next year so will we.

I was happy to see Daniel and his mother return home. Being on the run was not the way to handle this.  It broke my heart when she said he was planning on running away because the Chemo made him so sick.  I truly hope the doctors are right and the Chemo will be a success.  I have had too many family members who have had to go through Chemo and it is not easy and has taken its toll on them.  I truly hope Daniel can handle it.

What a great "Making A Differnce" story tonight. These kids lost everything, home, family, school, friends, during Katrina but now they have grown from that horrible time into wonderful, caring Seniors ready to graduate and have a want to help and encourage others.  I hope their lives flourish.  Thank you Brian for another great ending to the broadcast.

I can't wait to see your special "Inside the Obama White House" in June.  We are so lucky that those seven presidents put their trust in NBC to do this now and in the past, so that we can get a look at the workings of the White House and the West Wing.

Hope you have a wonderful evening and I look forwar to tomorrow's blog and broadcast.
There were numerous conservatives who praised and showed support for the troops over the Memorial Day weekend. The media, except radio, refused to show or talk about their remarks. Rawlings from CA. might try and get a job with MSNBC.She would fit right in with her whining, story telling and know it all attitude. Why be so hateful and crabby each and every post? Get a life and try to knock off the arrogance. How sad to be so negative your entire life!!!Which lawyers lost their license??? You never have any proof of 99% of what you write
I have been trying to find articles on Sotomayor and have found more on the Republican strategy (written prior to Obama's announcement)to discredit the candidate than on the judge.

And now that the announcement has been out for a few hours it makes it that much more difficult to find factual articles and fewer opinionated articles.

Even with your coverage tonight there was more about her back-story than her legal career.  I couldn't watch your Olympic coverage because the back-stories were more important, at least that's the way it seemed to me, than the event(and if the US lost the race there was no longer any mention of the event).  I see it all happening again with your coverage of her Senate hearings.
My husband and I were hugely disappointed in tonight's brief reference to N. Korea's nuclear test.  We'd not heard the news all weekend due to guests and thought your broadcast tonight would enlighten us after that few-word teaser, but it did not.  We assumed that something that important would be recapped for those who'd been away, or otherwise unable to hear any news over the weekend, but we were wrong, apparently.
We look forward every day to the Making a Difference segment because it's so nice to hear good news.
Thank you for your Sunday "news story" in which you devoted two-and-a-half minutes to British singing sensation Susan Boyle.  Meanwhile, on that broadcast you did not report on a single story from Africa, South America or Eastern Asia.  But at least we know more about Susan Boyle.  Congratulations to everyone at NBC on the great job you're doing.  You all must be so proud.
To Nightly News and NBC and company regarding the headline over the story about Judge Sotomayor that MSNBC presents on their online front page, which reads:
                  "Bronx cheers Sotomayor justice nomination."
How could such an insensitive reference to 'bronx cheer' be allowed to stand in a headline?
The Bronx celebrates...or Bronx celebrates...would have been appropriate, but not the headline offered. Which editor let the tasteless, implied slur stand in the headline? Shame on NBC and company.
I posted here on May 7th and 8th about Jeffrey Rosen's extremely flawed National Review article on Judge Sotomayor and his possible hidden agenda. Nice to see that you NBC folks are just a little late reporting on it. Typical.
Regarding court-ordered chemotherapy, I agree with the ruling, as well as the way it was resolved, in the recent Minnesota case.  Parents cannot be allowed to endanger their children.  However, only when the odds are greatly in favor of a cure should the courts be allowed to dictate treatment.  This was, of course, the case in Minnesota.  I wish the boy and his family a happy ending.
Notice how none of the Bush Administration supporters/appointees did or said any to support our troops over the Memorial Day.

====================================================

typical disgusting trashy lies from this one.
Some would rather continue to believe the fake stories of the troops. Sorry as a Military Mom I get the facts from the soldiers themselves, many of us knew about Walter Read Hospital before Washingtonpost exposed the truth. When you have a child or a love one serving our country you pay attention. As for Dave's comment well Monday we saw our Vet's honored all over the US and overseas by fellow soldiers. You might not like the truth but it is fake. For 7 years our troops have been overseas and those who sent them there it the airwaves and the sites of our lost soldiers. I visited graves of our troops here in California and saw many many Americans showing respect. I just pointed out we didn't see those how ordered the invasion honor our troops this year. No Rummy, Bush or Cheney and I wondered what was so different this year. We lost three more soldier two days ago and again we stop to honor with a prayer of thanks. I know most Americans who don't have family serving in the US Military look at the truth as lies but all I can say is as the Military Families comfort each other 24/7 with the fear of losing a love one I hope one person not even Jane or Dave have to live with that fear. I've gone go so many funnerals for our fallen soldiers but that's another story. Today we continue to do what we do everyday and that is emailing soldiers and sending packages as the rest of Americans go back to their daily lives until next Memorial Day.

I'm a Military Mom and proud of it as I've gotten to meet the brave young men and woman who serve our Country with honor.
Brian

The President today again made a speech discussing wind and solar energy sources and how these sources will help relieve the nation's dependence on foreign oil. Why doesn't the media call him on the fact that wind and solar are sources of electrical power and do not displace one barrel of oil, since this nation does not obtain electrical power from oil. These sources may displace some coal and natural gas sources, but not oil.  These types of speeches rally support for this "green" technology by using false representations. News organizations should tell the real story.  Thanks.
As far as Rawlings is concerned she still didn't explain her comments about Bush not commenting on the military during Memorial Day weekend. The media was so busy showing Obama at Arington there was no time showing millions of American's showing respect, including Republican's. I am also a military mom and believe Bush, as president, cared and showed emotion for the Military quite often, even when the cameras were absent. Bush has repect for the military and supported their every move and action.....just ask my son!!!
Jackie,
Kudos to you for all you do for our military....and kudos to the others who do it too....among them many, many Republicans.
Sorry, but your tone is often hateful toward a whole group of people...just because they exercise their right to express opinions different from yours.
Hello Brian and Chuck and Pete Williams. Here is a question I have for you about your Wednesday night story on Sotomayor.
Everyone, including you folks, quoted Sotomayor as saying a Latina could make a better choice ("I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life.")----why did you not display and read the entire quote ("Each day on the bench I learn something new about the judicial process and about being a professional Latina woman in a world that sometimes looks at me with suspicion. I am reminded each day that I render decisions that affect people concretely and that I owe them constant and complete vigilance in checking my assumptions, presumptions and perspectives and ensuring that to the extent that my limited abilities and capabilities permit me, that I reevaluate them and change as circumstances and cases before me requires. I can and do aspire to be greater than the sum total of my experiences but I accept my limitations. I willingly accept that we who judge must not deny the differences resulting from experience and heritage but attempt, as the Supreme Court suggests, continuously to judge when those opinions, sympathies and prejudices are appropriate.")?

Folks, I respect your expertise and integrity; I do not want or expect that you would be an Obama partisan, but in " objective reporting " is it not necessary to include an entire quote and not just one that inflames and encourages vitriol from fearful racists?
Omission is allowing untruth to be accepted as fact. Untruths not challenged is how we got into the mess (war, economy) that we have today, and you have a huge responsibility to make sure the truth is reported.
When you report, do not just accuse or charge or regurgitate---tell the whole story and do some analysis on the whole story.
Thank you.
Jan
