Tumultuous events don't take a holiday

Carl Quintanilla, CNBC News Anchor & CorrespondentIt would be nice if, on this Memorial Day holiday, Americans could focus simply on the generations of soldiers and military personnel who've fought for their country -- and the freedoms we enjoy.

But it's never that easy. The tumultuous events around the globe don't take a holiday. And so, the news that North Korea launched a powerful nuclear test on Monday was a reminder of the geopolitical troubles that President Obama faces. Although the move was condemned by governments around the world, there is still no clear policy on how to deal with the North Koreans. Tonight, our Jim Miklaszewski walks us through what happened, and our Andrea Mitchell tells us what it means.

Normally, North Korea would be big enough news, but there continues to be fallout out of Iran tonight over the western proposal for that government to halt their nuclear research in exchange for no additional sanctions. Tonight, Ann Curry is in Tehran and speaks with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who is refusing that deal -- even as he faces a challenging re-election season, himself.

We'll pay attention to the homeland, too, with pieces on Memorial Day remembrances around the country, and we'll spend part of this holiday with the 150 soldiers of Viper Company, who are fighting in the most active battlefield in Afghanistan.

Finally, we'll close with a piece by our Jim Maceda, who looks at an entire generation of U.S. soldiers -- who served at Normandy and Iwo Jima -- who've been denied appropriate remembrances for years because of one reason: they were black. That longstanding oversight is finally being remedied. We'll explain how, and hope you'll join us tonight.

Good Evening Mr.Quintanilla, Great to see you filling in for Mr.Williams this evening. This Memorial Day we remember all the brave and dedicated soldiers and military personnel who serve our country. And remember all the fallen heroes of all the wars fought. God Bless All Our Brave Soldiers!

In reading the posting it appears to be an excellent broadcast for this evening. The North Koreans testing nuclear missles which creates a tumultuous event and reaction from around the world.
The interview Ann Curry holds with the President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad should provide some interesting answers concerning Iran's nuclear ambitions.
Regarding Viper Company I saw the video of Richard's report in the Korenegal Valley from the Today Show this morning and it really showed how the soldiers are coping with the loss of so many of their fellow soldiers. Looking forward to seeing Richard's report with the soldiers of Viper Company this evening. Always great to see Richard on the broadcast! PLEASE STAY EXTRA,EXTRA SAFE RICHARD!

The report by Mr.Maceda should be extremely moving too. No soldiers should be denied rememberances.

Looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Quintanilla. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Wel Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO
Hi Carl nice to see you on Brian's show.
Yes your right if actions mean anything the US is more about one day and those stickers on cars that complete the US support for our troops. I got some nice emails from some soldiers in Iraq today. Tuesday everyone will go back to their regular lives until someone reminds America about our troops. President Obama was correct we should honor the living and the dead soldiers everyday.

Nice to see the Iran election is taking pointers from President Obama and First Lady Michelle. It shows how smart the Middle East Leaders are as that take the best the US has to copy it.

Your right about North Korea being as must likely their jealous of all the attention Iran and Isreal are getting so North Korea has to do something.

Have a nice safe day all
Carl, good to see you on the broadcast tonight.  You did a fantastic job!

I don't know what I think about North Korea, other than to call them the biggest bully on the block.

It's just sinful - to be mild about it - that veterans & soldiers are not recognized because of the color of their skins.  I so appreciated Jim Meceda's story hearing that this wrong is being righted, finally.

I feel guilty because my weekly Monday volunteer shift doesn't end because its a holiday and thus, no parade.  I did stop and say thank you to a veteran who was saluting at a flagged grave.  I also said thanks to the current soldiers that are in my life.

To all those who have served: THANK YOU is just not enough, but all I have to give.
Good Evening Mr.Quintanilla, A fine broadcast this Memorial Day. A day to pay tribute to all the brave and dedicated soldiers who have served ou country with honor. We Salute All Our Soldiers! Now on to the broadcast. Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast. Richard's report from the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan with the soldiers of Viper Company showed how these soldiers continuing to battle the taliban always remember their fellow soldiers who have been lost. As the soldier stated it is good and bad because one reflects on the sacrifice they made and is proud of their brave service to the country. Yet, they miss their buddies who stood alongside of them and shared the living quarters. Having lsot 80 soldiers and 30 injured is so very sad and one hopes the fighting will cease and no more lives will be lost. Seeing the taliban attack not long after the interview proves how the battle stil rages and the relentless fight against the taliban never seems to end. At least the soldiers were able to enjoy a barbeque and sing songs alittle before enduring more fighting. As Richard stated over 500 firefights. But as the nightime came the illuminated tribute to the fallen soldiers was extremely poignant and meaningful in honor of them.
Excellent Reporting As Always Richard! PLEASE STAY EXTRA,EXTRA SAFE AND WELL RICHARD!!

President Obama laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers was very moving and I was able to see the President's speech which was extremely moving and poignant.

The report by Mr.Cowan about the celebrations across different parts of the country showed much red, white and blue patriotism and inspiration. The tributes on the USS Wisconsin and the USS Intrepid certainly were very special honoring all those who serve our country. Great to see soldiers at Fort Dix returning home to spend some time with loved ones.

The report by Ann Curry from Tehran,Iran speaking with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad really showed how defiant President Ahmadinejad is towards the question of Iran'a intentions on building nuclear weapons. In the upcoming election he seems to be having some tough opposition especially in regards to the amount of support one of the other candidates received at a rally. Voter turnout will be the key. Time will tell after the votes are counted.

It was moving to see the soldiers at Camp Victory pay tribute to fellow soldiers this Memorial Day. God Bless All Our Brave Men and Women in the Military!

The piece by Mr.Maceda about efforts to remember black soldiers who fought in World War II is something that should never have been an oversight. These brave soldiers fought in Normandy and in the Pacific and should have been remembered for their brave and dedicated service. It is good these photographs are being uncovered and reaching museums and other memorials. All deserved to be remembered with honor.

Very Good Memorial Day broadcast Mr.Quintanilla! Excellent Reporting as Always Richard! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!

Hi Carl,

Happy Memorial Day! I'm glad that Brian had an extra day off and Lester could get some rest.

The reports were informative as always. Iran and N.Korea are becoming more dangerous. And it's strange; both leaders are acting like psychotic little brats who don't get enough attention.

I'm glad the woman returned with her son Daniel. But I really feel that she should be charged. At the very least, it was severe child neglect. Daniel could have died.

It was nice to see the vets are being remembered in different ways. I can't imagine what they've been through. We could never thank them enough. There are some many stories to tell, even from Iraq and Aghanistan that will never be told. My brother Shawn is in Iraq for his second deployment, and he's been to Bosnia, and Kosivo. But hopefully he'll be back safe and sound in appx. a yr.

For anybody who reads this and is interested:
the History Channel has the special about the 47 million yr. old fossil at 9(est). Bob Bazell suggested that some may be hyping it up a little, referring to it as the missing link. But it should be interesting to say the least.

Thanks Carl for siitng in and I've always enjoyed your reports. Take care.

Vicki
How nice to see you Mr Quintanilla ! Glad you were able to fill in today. I've never had the chance to tell you that you are something of a personal hero of mine. I am still moved to tears when I think of the coverage you and Martin Savage and Brian did during Katrina. I'm glad I had this chance to tell you how much I admired your work then.

I have a nomination for "Making a Difference" that will warm Brian's heart. It too is an overdue memorial to 3 Medal of Honor recipients, and the man who made it happen.

Our town has had for several years a memorial to all the fallen hometown boys. But in that list were 3 who stood out because they had received the Medal of Honor, a high number for a small rural county. Yet their honor was no where mentioned in the memorial.

Saturday we started to change all that by breaking ground on a memorial for the 3 of them, thanks in large part to the dogged determination of one man. A Veteran himself Bruce Salisbury has been the driving force in our area, not only for Medal of Honor winners, but MIA/KIA vets as well.
At last Marine Lance Cpl. Kenneth Lee Worley, U.S. Army Pfc. Jose F. Valdez and Staff Sgt. Franklin D. Miller. will be formally recognized by their hometown, I hope in some small way to recognize the person who is responsible for that.

You've got my email, and I've got most of the contact info and background you'll need. I hope to hear from you.
One more comment....
Richard, keep your head down, the blog regulars will never forgive you if you get hurt!
Tonight I was watching the broadcast, when I heard you mention Camp Victory.  My brother-in-law is stationed there.  So I looked up at the screen, and there he was, saluting!  He is a colonel there at Camp Victory, with the troops from Fort Lewis.  This is his second tour of duty there.  He will retire after 30 years in the Army in 2012.  His oldest son will soon be leaving for Afghanistan, as a 2nd Lt.  All of us are very proud of him, and look forward to his very safe return - sometime next year.  Thanks for a great shot of him!
It is almost June and we still have only 99 Senators.  Please Nightly News, report what is going on in Minesotta!

There should be continued national attention on a US Senate race that cannot be resolved in 6 months.  There is a continuing stream of big Republican money going to Norm Coleman that should be reported on like the $750,000 he received last week. This out of state RNC money is funding a travesty of justice.  Coleman is just dragging this out(at no personal expense)rather than conceeding per the bidding of his party.  Here is a tip for a story line...what is Coleman doing every day now?  Is he making a living some way or just being supported by the RNC?  Is he drawing a pension or still receiving health insurance benefits from our government?  Is he so wealthy he can just go without a paycheck for 4 months?

When was tha last time there was even a mention of this election on Nightly News? Maybe you could spend a little less time on the Making A Difference feel-good reports and a little more time on reporting real current events.

Please also report on Chavez sending uranium to Iran.
