Kick-off to summer

Greetings on this getaway Friday. The price of gas is going up -- though isn't anywhere close to last year's eye watering highs, and so a lot of folks will be back in their cars this Memorial Day weekend. Flying has also become a reasonable option with plenty of bargains, and cheap hotel rooms to be had. The only fly in the holiday ointment (or barbecue) may be the weather. It could be a show stopper in some parts of the country. Tom Costello will wrap up the holiday travel picture tonight.

President Obama, who yesterday vigorously defended his plans to close the Guantanamo Bay terrorist detention center, followed up today with another speech on national security. He spoke to graduating cadets at the U.S. Naval Academy today. Our Chuck Todd will have more on that.

And we've got a great story tonight from Jim Miklaszewski about a program that is giving badly disfigured war veterans a chance to live a more normal life.

Brian is off tonight. I'll look for you this evening on NBC Nightly News.

Good Evening Mr.Holt, Great to see you this evening filling in for Mr.Williams. A fine broadcast this evening as always. First of all the report by Mr.Costello concerning travel plans this weekend and during the summer really showed how people are finding bargains, but many are choosing to stay at home. Those travelling seem to be driving more than flying of taking the train and that can save much money. A tough economy affecting everyones plans for vacations. One hopes things will begin to take a turn for the better.
On another note the report by Ian Williams from the Swat Valley in Pakistan exhibited how much the Pakistani Army has been fighting back the taliban. Seeing the destroyed remains of the command center of the taliban showed how well equipped they seemed to be. The army wanted to show how much they had captured with all the guns, bombs and other weapons held by the taliban. Although the cameraman was able to show the devastated areas destroyed by the taliban which was awful. Hopefully, the taliban will be defeated by the army, but only time will tell. It is so very sad large numbers of innocent civilians have been caught in the middle of the conflict. One always hopes for peace soon.

The report by Mr.Miklaszewski about "Operation Mend" was truly heartwrenching and moving. Seeing the video of the soldier to his daughter and then hearing he was burned by a roadside bomb was heartbreaking. The UCLA Medical Center is doing some excellent work to help heal the wounds of these soldiers. Seeing this soldier after the surgery which is free of charge was amazing and his spirits were inspiring. These surgeons are rebuilding the lives of these soldiers and that is a wonderful thing because all our military deserve the best treatment. The founder is certainly making new lives for these soldiers and their families. It was great to see the soldier home with his family. On his way to healing. A wonderful thing!

The "Making A Difference" segment by Anne Thompson was truly heartwarming and moving. This touch therapy for the cancer patients gives them a chance to just relax and forget all the treatments of the disease. It takes them away and makes them feel good which is vitally important. The woman with Anne who had a facial and was looking in the mirror so happy with her beautiful glow on her face it was great to see. A very nice piece!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt! Hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend! Looking forward to seeing Mr.Williams on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" this evening! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Hope Everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO
Hi Lester,

I hope that you've had a good week and will be able to do some sort of celebrating over this Memorial
Day weekend. I'll be going to the Cherokee Indian Reservation. I have relatives there and of course they'll be having great festivals.

As for your broadcast: Jim's segment was painful to watch at first. But Scott and the other soldiers display a true meaning of resilience. The drs. are heroes and healers.

Ian Williams  brings alot of knowledge from Pakistan, and like Richard Engel, I hope that Ian stays safe.

In the "Making a Difference" segment, Vicky and Faye are other terrific examples of heroes and healers. I can only imagine what relief and comfort the massages and facials bring to the cancer patients.

Lester, I've been rating Brian's neck ties (just for fun),but I think that both of you are very elegant,
classy people. You had a nice red, diaganol, striped tie, perfect 10! I hope to be able to stay up to watch Brian on Jay Leno's show.

Lester, have a nice weekend and I'll be watching you next weekend.(I'll be out of town, but maybe my folks will have the news on there. They know a good thing when they see it.(NBC News and you, and Brian)

Goodnight,

Vicki

Lester,
It was great to see you this evening on
Nightly News for Brian, who may have taken
a getaway with family this Memorial weekend.

I tuned in to both speeches of President
Obama and VP Dick Checny this week and both made their
case.  My problem with the Obama administration
is their criminalizing the Bush administration
for the Iraq War.  I suppose most will have
to agree to disagree and not be disagreeable.
Others may see CHecney as attacking the
president, and he is after all not in office.
However, I still think former President Bush
was the right man at the right time and am
grateful for his strong leadership.  I
admire him tremendously.
Bravo to Pres. Obama for the credit card
bill which will be of real help to everybody,
a great accomplishment.

Your tie tonight is one of my favorites;  the other
the sapphire-blue stripe. I like all of
your ties, actually, but you make the ties,
not vice versa. You are the essence of style..

Have a nice evening, Lester.

Warm regards,
Phyllis
Hi Lester I'll be watching you on line during these holidays. I do wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. Yes many will be with family, but this year once again I'll be helping our troops still overseas have some care packages.

Now they say have you seen it all and I can say no. George W. Bush was guest speaker at a Texas High School Class. While Cheney's daughter Liz says Dick is fighting for those loyal appointees who might lose their law license for criminal activity. I think Cheney is more interested in protecting himself as we now know he signed the illegal torture orders. What was shocking was that money of the detainees were innocent but the US got bad information.  If that action becomes US Law for an excuse looks like others will add that law to their country. Yes I can see it now an American family held on bad information and tortured. What you give out you get back 7 times.

The Obama/Biden Administration is making history every day as Vice President Biden is now visiting a country the US never has before.

California needs an educated smart Govenor that puts the people first. Governor Terminator is clueless and his advisers are robbing the taxpayers blind. Most of the State Law Makers have been getting kick backs from Lobbyist and the Govenor is over his head. He can't keep using excuses like he doesn't speak English well, or he's learning the job. The Govenor is right now looking for a job for himself as Hollywood no longer will  hire him. The Obama Administration isn't interested in giving favor jobs like the Bush Administration did. Looks like Arnie will soon collect unemployment. Word is Gray Davis is the smartest in the group and even Republicans now realize he would have really helped our State with this mess. It's good to have a Leader who is smart and has the best people to support him/her. Arnie was put in office to cover up Enron and make sure California citizens didn't get the money that was stolen. Arnie did a great job at making sure he followed the orders of Enron and fellow GOP.

Have a great holiday all
Mr. Williams:
Last night's broadcast began with covering the two national security speeches.  You mentioned that President Obama had made a speech but that "we had to contend with a speech" by former Vice President, Dick Cheney. I would like to know if you read the introduction to the segment off a script or if you consciously said something to the effect that "we had to contend with" Mr. Cheney's speech.  Since Mr. Cheney's speech had been set up for over two weeks and promoted by his daughter on national news, surely you must have meant that "we had to contend with" President Obama's speech, which was a quick rebuttal to Congress for not voting him the funds to close GITMO.  I've always had faith in you as a broadcaster but now I'm beginning to wonder if Fox news has a point about MSNBC being liberally biased. I am most disappointed.  Please respond ASAP as I will need to make some cable changes.
Hello,
I watched Brian Williams last night With Jay Leno.  It caught my attention when he spoke about how we all need to wrap our arms around this Guantanamo Bay problem.  First, I can't see where it causes a problem to begin with. Here's why I can say thisl.  The answer that I want to give to you requires that I give it to you in the form of a question, just as I did with Brian, in order to make it as clear as possible for all who are listening right now.
First of all,  we are housing those of whom were a part to all of those poor people who had their heads cut off in such an evil manor.  The same who had been a part to that are now, or have been exposed to water being poured over their faces, Give me a break.  We've sat here everyday now for months talking about this so-called abuse. But, while this is so important to be stopped because of the American belief factor, this gets all the attention, while yet in "EVERY" American Federal Prison in this country, on a weekly basis, Men and or Women are being Murdered inside the prisons by other inmates.  But yet, where this is concerned it is just accepted and swept under the political media coverage rug?  Or am I to understand because there aren't any outside countries involved to whom we have to answer to, it just doesn't matter, so therefore it doesn't fall under that same American Belief system of humane treatment?  How much more hypocritical can we become at this point?  Or do the politics override this also?

Artie in Utica
Lester,

We will spend Memorial Day at a GE Luncheon
and many of The Greatest Generation will be there,
and it will be an honor to be with them. I have
listen to many fascinating war stories and
been brought up to speed.  My Uncle, who
is now deceased, was stationed in England
during the war.  I also have Tom Brokaw's
book, "The Greatest Generation".  And
they were!!!

Phyllis
