Man's best friend--but more 'like a marriage'

"Like a marriage"--Stephanie Rankin doesn't mind that her husband uses that phrase to describe another relationship. And she admits her spouse of 25 years spends far less time with her than he does with a different companion.

Sergeant Clay Rankin was severely wounded during combat operations in Baghdad.  He has a brain injury you'd be hard pressed to detect and physical wounds evident with his every move. Doctors told him he'd have to live out his days in a wheelchair, a decision he was unwilling to accept.

A service dog might keep him on his feet, he was told, but they were hard to come by. Some groups charge tens of thousands of dollars, others ask veterans to solicit friends and family for donations.  A Texas woman does neither.

Working on a shoestring budget and sometimes using abandoned pets, Lori Stevens loves and trains them --  before giving to disabled veterans who will love them even more.

That's how an 8-year-old black lab named Archie came to move from the plains of Texas to the mountains of West Virginia and, in the process, changed the life of an American soldier.  Clay says there are no words to express his gratitude to Lori.  There are, however, pictures.  Tonight, in our Making A Difference report, you'll meet the woman who helps man's best friend live up to that billing.

Hi Ms. Shamlian

I wanted to thank you for the wonderful story of Lori Stevens and what she has done to help our disabled veterans get through their days.  She has given them, through these service dogs, a second chance at life.  She has given them a dog that will not only help them but will also provide the love and companionship many of them need to get through each day.  I used your link and got on to their web and will be sending a donation to help this cause.  What a wonderful woman she is.

Thanks for the story.
What a great story and a great organization.  Thanks for bringing this to us!
Ms Stevens

I want to thank you for you are doing for our Vets. We need more americans like you. I would like to learn more about how I can get more involved. You are one in a million.

Thanks for all you do. Larry S,
I know Lori personally and she is the most giving, generous (and modest) person in the world.  Please go to the website, www.patriotpaws.org to learn more about providing service dogs to our disabled veterans. Lori gives of her time and energy 7 days a week to help people have independence (that so many take for granted)! Great job, Lori - and PatriotPAWS.org!

Lori Stevens is truly a blessing. And some may say I am partial, as I have the privilege of being a Patriot Paws Volunteer. First Lori steals your heart from the loving, giving person she is, then the dogs take the next part, and the rest of your heart is taken when you get to witness these men and women given back just some of their freedoms we take for granted, with a very precious life long friend. God Bless you Lori for all you are doing and allowing us to be part of, and most of all, God Bless our Troops and our Veterans. Thank You Nightly News for letting the rest of the World know about Lori and Patriot Paws.
Thanks for bringing us this great story.  As mentioned above, some of the dogs have experienced hardship, too.  Their past suffering makes their aptitude and loyalty even more amazing.  They are helping our wounded warriors maintain their independence and dignity.

Thanks, Lori and Janet, for making a difference.
The work that Patriot Paws is doing is amazing and, as a counterpart in the service dog world, I understand the INCREDIBLE impact these dogs have on individuals with disabilities.  I thought the video segment was amazing but I am disappointed in the article above because it, in a sense, glorifies Patriot Paws working on a shoestring budget and how other organizations may charge for the dogs .... and in the same breath talks about how hard these dogs are to come by.  If service dog organizations didn't have to scrape by on a shoestring budget and spend so much of our time fundraising to pay for essentials (such as dog food and vet care, not to mention electricity, our own food, transportation, etc.) we could be getting more of these dogs trained and placed with our veterans!!  On average it costs between $20,000 - $25,000, and takes up to 2 years of training, PER DOG.  I hope I'm not putting words in Lori's mouth but I'm sure that she would rather not HAVE to operate on a shoestring budget and would prefer be able to focus her time and energies on training and placing!!  One solution would be to get the insurance companies to view a service dog as an "assistive device" and cover the costs.
Until that happens and because it is what it is, please do support service dog organizations (particularly the smaller ones as we don't have the resources that the larger organizations have and we have been established to help cut down that 3-5 year wait for assistance dogs)
Lori & Patriot Paws, way to go and keep up the fantastic work!!
Janet, all of you at NBC, did a wonderful job helping us look good. I want to say “Thank you”, to everyone for all the kind words and support. I, wish they would have had more time to tell the story about  all of the wonderful volunteers and friends who have spent so much time helping me with Patriot PAWS. It is not all about me it is about Americans who care enough to give back to those who have given so much. We also have to give SPECIAL THANKS to Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Wardens and Staff at the Crain, and Lane Murray Units for all the hard work with this program.
I was invited to visit with 80 Wounded Warriors this weekend and it just reinforces my heart to keep on keeping on. Thanks all.  www.patriotpaws.org

My name is Priscilia, and I was very lucky to be apart of the Patriot Paws program in Gatesville.  I've recently returned home last month.  Patriot Paws and Lori Stevens has given me a whole new out look on life and the new road that I want to travel.  Being able to learn how to train these dogs and be involved in the process of turning them over to the disable veterans was amazing.  I plan on staying involved with them, because I have seen the results to all of our hard work.  And it is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life.  I just want to say "Thank You" to Lori and Warden Nelson for giving me the opportunity to be in the program.  As I look for employment now; I will also hold my head up high and show society that this program makes a huge difference in our lives.

Thank you,
Priscilia Lucero
