Judge, jury and Tribeca

I warned the organizers. I warned my fellow jurors. I know nothing about filmmaking ... but I love movies, and I watch a ton of them (It's kind of like saying, I didn't direct "The Godfather," but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night!). They asked me anyway. I was a juror this year for the Tribeca Film Festival.

The jury I was on judged the entries in the "World Documentary" category -- a dozen of them. Deliberations were last evening, in a Midtown hotel ... and we had a blast. I developed so much admiration and respect for my fellow jurors and for their viewpoints. It was a great evening. Voices were raised -- but never in anger, just with passion over a great movie or a clunker. We had consensus, we had compromise -- and we were all thrilled with the dynamic and the result. I was sorry to say goodbye to my fellow jurors at the end of the night. It was an unforgettable experience, and I want to thank the good folks at the Festival. It was born in the aftermath of 9-11, and now in its 8th year it has become a New York institution like the neighborhood in its title.

Back to the news: we're preparing tonight's broadcast, and we hope you can join us!

Good evening, Brian!

Wow, that sounds great! How in the world did you have time for all of it all yesterday? I'm a huge movie fan myself, old and new. Glad you had such a great time! Really though, how do you do it? Coffee and energy bars?

Something I just read on the famed website, Twitter. By Michael Phelps - "Chrysler going bankrupt now? With all these car companies going bankrupt, we'll have to start swimming around instead driving!"

I think he has a plan, haha.

Also, being on Twitter I've talked a lot with @NBCNewsCrew -- photo journalist for NBC News -- and so I already know what "Making A Difference" story will air tonight. Such great people at NBC News! I can't wait to see this one.

See you soon, Brian! Have a great Thursday, and take care!

-Cary
I love your making a difference segments. it shows that all is not lost in this sometimes inhumane world. if we all could go back to the lessons we learned in "sandbox 101" I believe the world would be a better place.
Hi Brian,

I may not make it back to the computer tonight. My husband and I are really beginning to race each other to the p.c. after dinner.

I'm glad you had a great time in Tribeca judgiing the documentaries. That's one place I've always wanted to go to in N.Y.C./Manhattan. I've heard about Robert Daniro's resturant.(can't spell)

We have 10 cases of the swine flu here in S.C. A private school had students who went on spring break in Mexico. I think they've all recovered. Not sure.

It was nice to hear Cpt.Phillips talking in front of the senate. He has some great ideas about security that should have already been in place.

I was wondering if there's going to be any reporting in the near future about the three female journalists who have been imprisoned. There's Ms. Saberi in Iran, who is on a hunger strike. Then there are the two in N.Korea.

As far as "Making a Difference". I don't know if the other NBC affiliates are doing this. Our local NBC station is doing a segment called "Paying it Forward." They give someone four hundred dollars and give them an hr. to give it away. It's great to see how much joy people get out of it.

I hope to see you tonight. If I ever get a divorce, the computer is coming with me. If/when I get remarried, he(the new one)will have to give me the best computer on the market and have someone teach me how to use it.I'll ask for a TV too. The new one (TV) is great, but still have an old anolog that works for another mo. or so. There's something to be said for old technology.

Hi Judge Brian nice report on the World Doumentary Event. Now my pick is War, Love, God and Madness. Yes the read the reviews of all films selected.

Brian if you ever wondered by the teen crime rate has been so high for 8 years with billions put in the OJJDP to help these teens I found out way.
Direct Robert Flores was investigate with the following results:

Report: Justice Dept. Official Violated Ethics Rules in Grant-Making
Bush Administration Appointee Awarded Sole Source Contracts to Ideologically Favored Companies, Individuals

Yes and I really should have been a Bush friend for those 8 years. One dude who is a citizen of Colombina was paid a salary yearly of $281,000 dollars of taxpayers money for doing nothing. You have to love America when a done citizen can get a job paying that kind of money. Plus no charges or civil suit. Just think a crime was committed with stealing billions yet no Charges will be filed. Greed, Crime, Lying is good in America. No wonder our Budget Debt is so high with money for 8 year just being given away to friends.

No surprise about Chrysler and I look for Ford to end up being the biggest US Auto Company in America. I knew when Ford didn't fall in line with the Bush Administration and they decided to speak with President elect Obama, smart move.

see you same time same place
Hi Brian:

Thanks for the post.  It sounds like you really had a great time being on this kind of jury.  It must have been so much fun to listen to everyone's opinion. I am sure there were some very intersting ones.  Don't know how you do it after a day like yesterday then this into the night.  Like I said before I guess sleep is not on your agenda.

Can't wait for tonights broadcast and of course the "Making a Difference" segment.
Brian,
It's amazing to me you have time to do anything. It is super important for people to take time to enjoy the things in life that truly interests them. It keeps us fresh!
On a side note: Park City Independent School District in Park City, Utah, USA, the Home of the 2002 Winter Olympic's has closed eight (8) of its schools due to the Swine Flu Scare. I will include the link in the, Your Website Area Below, in case you might find it worthy to look at.
During this time of changes across America, it is vitally important for everyone to re-examine hobbies and interests and revisit them. This is a fabulous way to blow off steam and will cause us enjoy life more! Congratulations on your Successful Journey!
Good Evening Brian,
I have always watched the Nightly News even when I was a little girl in my Grandma's house. Back then, it was David Brinkley, and Chet Huntley or as I would say "Huntley, Brinkley"!
While watching this evenings broadcast and seeing the piece on Chrylser I just had to share my comments! My husband has been with Chrysler as a "parts guy" for 20 years and we all own Chrysler or Dodge vehicles and are proud of it!! When the Chrysler 300 first came out and was named Motor Trend's 2005 car of the year I fell in love with it and it was the very first car I ever picked out all on my own. I researched many vehicles and when my husband who is a real car guy told me I had "made a great choice" how happy I was! I and my family will continue to drive these fine vehicles very proudly. Especially now to show our support for this great American company and it's awesome employees. I feel very confident that Chrysler will around for a long time to come.

Hi Brian, I couldn't hold this one back.

People should come down from the mountains and join the real world.

I personally don't think that women are just running to get pregnant so that they can have an abortion.
I don't  think it's a decision that women take lightly.
Universites(Notre Dame,)religions, churches, some aren't religions, law makers should NOT have the right to tell a woman what to do with her body. I personally wouldn't have an abortion. I had my baby at sixteen and was forced to give it away-sorry for too much info.
Parents should realize there is a strong chance that their teenagers will have sex with or without birth control.
I don't believe that it's practical or emotionally healthy NOT to know each other in the biblical way. You should know everything about your future spouse. So I don't believe in abstinence. It's not a sin people.
I don't believe that homomsexuality is a sin or it's a mental disorder.

Please, let's go forward into the 21st century.

And Notre Dame : You don't deserve to have President Obama speak. You deserve Ms. California.

Vicki
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Another fine broadcast this evening. First of all the report by Mr.Bazell concerning the outbreak of the H1N1 disease or swine flu which at least has no new reported deaths although it seems ot be having a huge effect in many States. Hopefully, the people who are taking the proper medicine will recover quickly.
The report by Janet Shamlian from Fort Worth,Texas showed how this outbreak is shutting down all the schools which is quite alarming. It appears the parents learned the night before about the closings and have to stay home with the children. It certainly is being taken very seriously because of all the scrubbing down of the rooms. Hopefully, all the schools will be able to reopen by the date of May 11th. Time will tell.
On another note Captain Phillips testimony on Capital Hill really exhibited how piracy is such a rampant and dangerous thing. Allowing the crews to be armed in order to defend themselves in these situations could help in preventing takeovers of ships along with other measures of protection.

On a humorous note the video of the parrot moving to the music was great and the bird seemed to have some rythmn.
I think your reporting on the newest Barbie doll with stick on tatoos was also humorous especially when you added Ken to your comment. You can always give great deliveries of humor with a straight face!

The "Making A Difference" segment by Mr Mott from New Orleans truly showed inspired kids wanting to learn great music. The man who founded the band to help these kids is providing them with a good future because he is at the same time reminding them to concentrate on their studies. The grades of the kids are going up and they are having fun playing in the band. Very nice piece!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. It sounds liek you had a wonderful time judging those world documentary films at the Tribeca Film Festival. You do always keep extra busy and I don't know how you mangaged to find the time! Great Work Mr.Williams! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO
Hi, Brian!

Thank you for the broadcast tonight, it was great as usual!

Loved tonight's "Making A Difference" story, I was happy to hear it coming from New Orleans!

P.S. I don't know if you caught the Late Show with David Letterman last night, but it was sort of another "sign of the times", as his voice is pretty much completely butchered! He turned a from in his throat, into one of the funniest nights on the Late Show I've ever seen. Felt bad for him, at the same time, he had us laughing in tears!

Wishing you a great night. See you on Friday night!
Take care,
-Cary

Since the people in charge wants to keep swine out of the picture and call the Swine Flu H1N1 in order to protect pork prices, the needless killing of pigs and a host of other concerns, why don't you introduce a new name for it beside H1N1.

The new flu is a combination of bird and swine DNA so on tomorrow's newscast you should start calling it The BS Flu.

As serious as H1N1 is to the general public some people are taking advantage and using it as an excuse to get out of things.  Therefore the BS Flu is applicable as the correct description.

Agree?
John Edwards makes me sick to my stomach too.
Hi Brian:

What a great broadcast tonight.  Thank you for the up beat information on the Swine Flu.  I am so glad that things here in the U.S. are looking more like regular flu than this horrible Swine Flu.  Hopefully this means that people are really listening to your reports with Dr. Bazell and doing what it takes to stop the spread of this flu.  I know only time will tell but thank you for the reports.

Thanks for the humor stories of the bird and Barbie. Your adding Ken was great but I don't know how you do these with not even a smerk. You're good!!!!

Goog to see that Captain Phillips is bouncing back and good for him to want to return to the seas. I just hope that the right people are hearing what he is saying.  There were some good ideas that should be checked into.

I am a Catholic.  I am not sure that Notre Dame is right in their views on Obama speaking.  I know that we are not supposed to agree with abortions and gay rights, etc but in this day and age the Catholic religion needs to take a deep breath and listen to why so many of us are changing our beliefs.  This can be a very hard and cruel world we are living in and as Catholics and Christians we need to have compassion for the people who have to make the decisions regarding abortion and not look down on those that are pro-choice or have found themselves gay.  As a Catholic I do not believe that I look bad in the eyes of God because I believe a woman should have the right to choose.  It is her decision and she has to answer to it.  I do not believe Obama should be shunned for his views.  I think he would be a wonderful speaker.  We need to get out of the clouds and into the real world and realize that our younger generation needs people to back them in their decisions on abortion, gay marriage etc and to not only be there to judge them.

Thanks for a great "Making A Difference" segment.  What a great thing to do for these kids.  He is not only helping them with keept their grades up but his is giving them a future through music.  What a wonderful gift to give a child.  They are seeing how their hobbies and likes can also be a building block to their future.  He is giving them the confidence to succeed.

Looking forward to tomorrow's post and of course your broadcast.

Barbie with a tramp stamp?! Holy cow, what is the world coming to? Little kids love tattoos, but there is just something wrong with Barbie heading in that direction. I am in no way a prude, but why can't little girls just be little girls anymore? I don't understand why the toy companies are are sexing up all these dolls for our little girls.
I wonder if our parents complained about our Barbie Dolls the same way? -I'm suddenly having the horrific realization that I might be turning into my parents!
Complaining aside, the line about Ken liking the tats was pretty funny. I actually imagine Barbie spends her time out in the clubs, trolling for Ken's younger replacement. He's probably been stepping out with Skipper anyway.

So, the Swine Flu isn't supposed to be called Swine Flu anymore? I'm guessing the poor pigs appreciate that.  Someone should let them know in Egypt. Slaughtering all those pigs seems like overkill (literally). It's not like some infected pig from Mexico is going to book the next flight to Egypt for a visit with his piggy friends. Did no one explain to the Egyptians that PEOPLE are spreading the virus to each other?

Still on the subject of this virus... I was out shopping at my local supercenter and noticed that the shelves are almost cleared of antibacterial wipes and gel. (Yes, I was buying some myself.) This is probably a good thing, as Vicki noted yesterday that too many people don't bother to wash their hands to begin with. (Ick.) Maybe if anything good comes out of this, more people will start practicing some basic hygiene.

Oh, and Vicki, you crack me up. Does your husband know you've already got the divorce and remarriage planned out? ;-) I'm going to suggest you instead get another computer.  We're a two computer household here. It makes for a happier marriage.

Greetings to everyone else as well.
Is anyone else as excited as I am about the opening of a seat on the supreme court? Should be an interesting ride. I wonder how large a margin a judge will get sworn in with given the democratic lead of at least 8 votes in the senate. Someone else please tell me your excited about this! This is Huge!
I love movies too.  A favorite is "THe Juror"
with Alec Baldwin and Demi Moore.  His obsession
with Demi reminds me of Heathcliff's obsession
with Catherine in Wuthering Heights.  Except in
the end of the movie, Demi shoots Alec and in
the classic novel Heathcliff comes back for Catherine
and digs her out of grave, which was chilling.
The new flu is a combination of bird and swine DNA so on tomorrow's newscast you should start calling it The BS Flu.

Agree? Dewey Quong, Reno, NV (Sent Thursday, April 30, 2009 9:26 PM)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You have my vote if the censor here let's it through.
Lori,

I agree with you about Barbie,Ken,and Skipper. Remember the car co. Nissan, whatever, where the G.I.Joe type came to Barbie's house and picked her up in the snazzy sports car? Poor Ken was up on the balcony as if he was asying," Barbie,so what if I was sleeping with your friend? It's not like we could do anything!"
I'm glad that I crack you up. I really would rather have a new, younger husband and a new TV. And I want my MTV.

Vicki
Brain,

I am a student at USC where we have, arguably, the best film school in the country. Next time you are out here, you want to stop by? We'd love to have you judge any of the myriad of competitions that happen here every semester.

I am also the programming manager for the local Trojan Vision Television station. You're pressense would certainly do a lot for our morale and visibility, not to mention help beef up our lagging news coverage. I hope you can honestly think about it.

Congrats on your upcoming 50th!

Michael
@ Dewey:  Too funny!  I like the BS Flu comment.

@ Matt:  Happy 21st!  To be that young and smart again.   Enjoy every thing life has to offer in your 20's.

@ Vicki:  I met my birth mother at age 35 after the death of my infant son.   We all have our heart aches.  In the end it makes us more compassionate and stronger.   You and I understand the meaning of motherhood, sacrifice and sisterhood.

@ Brian:  Happy 50th Birthday!  Wow! You are looking good each and every day!    If I saw you getting out of a nice baby blue Bentley convertible, my head would turn.  (Not for the car!)

Peace and love to all!
Brian, I have a question for those who say waterboarding is a acceptable means of interrogation and not torture.  Is it acceptable if a member of our military was captured by Terrorist, or some other enemy, to be waterboarded.  In the exact same manner we used it as a enhanced interrogation method. And Is it a fact that the previous administration has now made these enhanced interrogation method now acceptable for use throughout the world - even against us.
