Someone should pay for NYC air scare

I met an investment banker at a New York luncheon today who told me the mindset at her firm has been "re-set to a 9/11 mentality" after what happened in Lower Manhattan this morning.  Many in her office evacuated, along with many other firms and buildings. I'll link to the story here, but here's the lay version with my added bias: word started spreading through New York during the morning rush hour that a "jumbo jet flanked by a fighter jet" was flying low over the Hudson river near the southern tip of Manhattan.  Networks like ours switched our footing to preparation to report the incident. People who looked on from a distance were horrified at the sight. What's worse, people who were close to the "fly-over" were even more troubled -- as some of them recognized the world-famous livery -- the paint scheme on the fuselage: it was Air Force One. The real one. The fighter jet was real. Was the President on board?  Was he in jeopardy? Could this really be happening in the sky over New York?

The finger-pointing reached Olympian heights before lunch. The Air Force said they told everyone who needed to know, including the FAA and NYPD. The NYPD said they were told not to tell the public. It was apparently a "photo mission" (masked as a "training mission"?) to take pictures of the aircraft with the Statue of Liberty in the background.  I understand the need for pretty pictures of the aircraft against a dramatic backdrop, and I've flown a lot of miles with the air wing that operates Air Force One... but why was it staged during Monday morning rush hour? Why not make it a public event -- widely announced via electronic media -- and invite the public, a la an air show, to come to lower Manhattan with their cameras on, say, a Saturday morning to take their own pictures of this dramatic sight?

This was dangerously mishandled. As I said the other evening at a gathering of New York City firefighters: even after all these years, among many New Yorkers, 9/11 still feels like it was about 10 minutes ago. The pit is still there, though it's now a construction zone.  The losses don't go away. No one is bringing my neighbor back to me.  I will drive by his house on my way home from work tonight, and he won't be there. We still look up at the sky (in ways we never did before) when we hear low-flying aircraft, and we still worry.  Lower Manhattan is no place for an unnanounced low-altitude jumbo jet-and-fighter-jet flyover.

Someone should pay for this.

Now to the news of the day: we will have comprehensive coverage of the swine flu outbreak, and Mike Taibbi will cover the story above. We'll end on an uplifting example of Making a Difference... and we hope you can join us as we start a new week.

I am a military spouse whose husband is a U.S. Air Force pilot.  What bothers me about this horrific, unprepared, showing-off "photo op" is the cost in dollars it took to fly both planes for just ONE photo op!  Please, someone look into how much it costs to fly the President around our country in Air Force One (with all his backups, equipment, other cargo planes carrying the presidential limousines, etc.) amid all of our money concerns and 'bailouts.'

Please do not sign my name.  Thank you very much!
Hello Brian, thank you for your blog and video -- my friend Dawn, after hearing about what happened, said it was the stupidist thing she'd heard of in the last six months.  She's right.  Everyone's comment that heads should roll & that whoever's behind it should be fired -- that is very right and fair and just.  It is extremely cruel, not just incredibly stupid and insane -- forcing people to relive something that traumatic is another type of torture, not to mention post traumatic stress.  Is this what the "training" is all about?
Brian--- Reading all the news on this event I have to ask:  Doesn't anyone in the Air Force know PHOTOSHOP?!  So many pix exist of Air Force One, the NY skyline, the Statue of Liberty, etc.  With some great art direction, the same graphic could be achieved without endangering NYC, let alone the costs of manpower and fuel used, etc.   C'mon, we know its been done before.
I get it.  I see what's going on here.  Obviously, the moderators of this board are intentionally delaying certain unflattering comments for up to a week to ensure that they are read by as few people as possible.  That way, NBC can claim the moral high ground by maintaining that they print the comments.  But since hardly any people go back and re-read old Daily Nightly posts, the delayed comments don't actually get read.  That was the case with my 4/17 and 4/20 comments.  They are now buried in oblivion, intentionally strangled by the red tape of the NBC bureaucracy.  Fifteen comments have already been posted to today's blog, but comments from Friday have yet to be posted.  Is this the Orwellian manner in which NBC deals with "enemies of the state"?  Is this NBC's idea of a free and fair exchange of ideas?  It's ridiculous that some comments leapfrog others.  Has anyone at NBC ever considered posting the comments in the order they are received?  I know that sounds subversive and revolutionary, but it might actually be worth a try.  I would be very interested in hearing a response from someone at NBC.  They can respond on this board or post a comment on my blog at www.nightly-daily.blogspot.com.  If people take the time to post comments on this board, I think they have a right to know about the politics that govern the way in which the comments are posted.
Dear Brian,
You are absolutely right.
Someone needs to pay for this.
Louis Caldera will certainly be gone within days.
(He approved this flight).
Other heads will probably roll too.
This "Photo-Op" was beyond stupid and badly handled.
This whole task could have been easily accomplished
in a computer with Photoshop.
What an idiotic waste of time and money, and even
more, what a moronic and needless source of distress
and pain for the people of New York.
It is absolutely inconceivable that Nightly News would allow Vesicare (a GlaxoSmithKline product) to sponsor Monday's "Making A Difference" segment about a woman who uses her Arizona ranch as a rescue shelter for animals that are unwanted or unable to be cared for.  Did anyone at NBC even think about this?  Did it occur to any of the producers that Glaxo is one of the world's largest utilizers of animal testing?  More animals probably died in order to bring Vesicare to market than have been rescued by Debra Wilson!  This is from Maria Menounos's Monday blog: "Visiting Dr. Wilson's ranch outside Phoenix, I immediately saw just how much she loves animals...She is so passionate about the plight of animals that she's scheduled another day of surgery into her full-time job as a gynecologist to help pay for all the expenditures.  She has forgone luxuries and vacations as well, all to finance the animals...Her belief is that animals are God's creatures and we are supposed to help them, too.  They provide us with love, companionship and even healing as proven with therapy animals.  So why not save them?"  Why didn't Maria Menounos ask Ms. Wilson what she thinks of Glaxo's use of test animals?  I wonder if Menounos even informed Ms. Wilson that her story would be sponsored by a company that tortures and kills animals.

Amazingly, this is not the first time Nightly News has allowed Glaxo to sponsor a MAD segment about animal rescue.  Last Jan. 2, Glaxo sponsored a segment about Jon Wehrenberg's organization "Pilots 'N Paws", which flies dogs from crowded animal shelters to other less crowded shelters where they can more easily be adopted.  And last Nov. 21, Glaxo was allowed to sponsor a MAD segment about Lorita Lindemann, who rescues former race horses and keeps them from being euthanized or turned into dog food.  I wonder what Mr. Wehrenberg and Ms. Lindemann thought of the fact that their stories were sponsored by Glaxo.  Is anyone at NBC paying attention?  Why is no one at Nightly News connecting the dots here?  Allowing Glaxo to sponsor these segments is so inappropriate that it boggles my mind.  I guess it's just a question of money.  If NBC was paid enough, they would probably allow Anheuser-Busch to sponsor a segment about families that have lost loved ones to drunk drivers.  NBC obviously doesn't care about the morality or appropriateness of their sponsorships.  This is inexcusable.  Brian Williams is always talking about how much he loves dogs. This makes me wonder.  Brian and the Nightly News producers owe apologies to Debra Wilson, Jon Wehrenberg and Lorita Lindemann.  They also owe an apology to the viewers.
A photo-op?  Please, you guys can't be buying that nonsense..... how much did this little "photo op" cost the tax payers? Yeah, someone needs to be fired and a true explanation given - by the  president, no one else.  No one spends this kind of money on just a Photo op.  That's why we have satellite pics and photo shop for....
There SHOULD be accountability for the plane photo-op fiasco, just as there should be accountability for the illegal torture of prisoners in our name, the illegal wiretapping of the phones of American citizens, and the outright lies that were told to get the public to go along with the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq, which has directly resulted in the deaths of many thousands of Americans, Iraqis and others. Letting the past go and just looking toward the future is not an option.
Another blunder from the Nobama administration-had this happened while GWB was President-this would be blamed entirely on him-whose fault is this? How insensitive-I know that this administration calls terror attacks "man-made disasters" but really!!!!!
Regarding the Air Force One flyover of NYC:  I am a bit perplexed that the Administration that is advocating a Cap & Trade tax on carbon emissions, and which has gone on record committing to comb through the federal budget line-by-by, to eliminate wasteful spending, would authorize such a "photo-op" event?

How many tons of carbon emissions were given off by Air Force One & the two F-16 chase planes?

How many tax payer dollars were spent on this photo-op?

It has been said that government should lead by example.  Government missed the mark in this case.
another Obama gaf! amazing! whats next he'll say he had no idea?
Honestly, this incident is just not a big deal. Get over it New Yorkers!
I am livid that the administration I helped to elect not only terrified the people of NYC, but wasted thousands (if not millions) of taxpayer dollars doing it.  What happened to the Obama administration reviewing the federal budget line by line and trimming the fat?

With so many Americans struggling to make ends meet and learning how to make due with what they already have and spend on only the absolute essentials, our government, and the Obama administration, needs to learn to do the same.
I work in downtown Dallas where Southwest Airlines flies out of Love Field Airport directly over the downtown area. Since 9/11 I still get a sick feeling in my gut everytime I hear a jet and just reflexively watch a flyover with suspicion. The incident in NY yesterday was the most boneheaded, cruel and insensitive act for this agency to pull. It's sad, but I almost suspect that it may have been part of some hidden scare tactic pulled by forces unknown. I feel for the victims and NYers who had to relive that tragegy for no reason.
We got more imprtant things to worry about people. DUMB for sure but get a GRIP. Swine Flu may become a pandemic. The Econ still needs work...

This is a distraction
Did BHO do that on purpose?  Or just another case of "head up orifice syndrome"?

Wasting money flying those airplanes is bad enough, just to show off his toys, and what a big shot he thinks he is.  BUT over New York, that low, come on!   Those poor people's hearts were beating out of their chests!   Jesus!!!!!!!!
I think what happened in New York yesterday was a terrible thing. I can just imagine how scared people were. When I was watching it on the news, I felt sick. I cant believe they had the nerve to do that, they should do more than just apologize!
President Obamah should fire Louis Caldera and be done with it.  This is too serious to just fluff over.
Greatly disappointed in your decisions Brian.
The city of New York and the Governor were notified last week and nobody chose to question the "plan" not to notify the public? If you find a large rock in the road, and leave it there, your more to blame than the one who left the rock in the first place. Not the exact wording, but I read it a long time ago in The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran and it works for me
My stomach still feels like I'm about to vomit.  Tears came to my eyes and i'll admit that I felt panic again.  It would make me feel better if someone admitted that they had a lapse in good judgment and resigned.
Even if they had warned people before hand, this was a horrible idea.

If I have seen somebody being gunned down, you don't point a gun at me and say "it's only fake, don't worry."

Somebody should, at least, get fired.
Einstein once stated that the truest example of infinity that he could actually see was "human stupidity."
But this “photo op”, a true high school prank, was way beyond that.
This was no stupid stunt, but was a direct threat - but to whom?
If Obama doesn't fire someone, then it's time to really worry.
BRIAN,
PLEASE LET MR OBAMA KNOW THAT IF HE KEEPS UP THIS KIND OF STUPIDITY(NO WAY TO SUGARCOAT IT), HE'LL BE OUT IN 4 YEARS WITH THE PUBLIC DISLIKING HIM AS MUCH AS BUSH.  IT DEFIES COMMON SENSE WITH OBAMA AND HIS ADMINISTRATION.  OBVIOUSLY THE PRESIDENT HAD TO KNOW ABOUT THIS OPERATION.  WAS HE TRYING TO SCARE NEW YORKERS DELIBERATELY? CALL ME CRAZY, BUT IT SEEMS HE'S TRYING TO SCARE AMERICANS IN ANY WAY HE CAN-ALMOST AS IF HE HAS DISDAIN FOR AMERICAN AND ITS CITIZENS.
there are 3 big airports with 6 approach/departure patterns around Manhattan, an air corridor for small planes on the Hudson.....and you guys are scared because a 474 if flying at 3000' 170 knts flaps full out and tailed by not one but TWO f-16's with 12 sidewinders between the 2 of them. Get over it NY. What do you think Palestinians feel when they hear a helicopter, a tank or a jeep ( EVERYDAY BY THE WAY)... and those are actually shooting.
Oh Brian, get a life. Here in DC, planes have been flying over the Pentagon and the memorial since 9/14/1. Nobody whined about that, because we all understand that Congress needs its private airport.

Please use your anger about this subject and get some answers on the subject of why the United States joined such fine countries as China, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Syria, Turkey, Uganda, and Uzbekistan in the use of torture.
GOOD FOR YOU, Brian Williams!! The fly by was shockingly insensitive to New Yorkers and all Americans. Even worse than my surprise at finding no metal detectors or security personnel when I walked onto the National Mall for Obama's Inauguration. And after all that hype of what to expect.
It may have been bad timing to fly Air Force One over Manhattan at rush hour, but don't people realize that announcing the flight may put the plane in jeopardy?
I agree that this "photo op" should have been done by Photo Shop in today's economy.  It's an OUTRAGE on so many levels.  There was legitimate reason to be terrified and we had to pay for it with our tax money??!  Is it true they were also planning on flying over the CAPITOL but it was only after the Liberty debacle it was scrapped?  Someone does need to pay because I'm getting sick of paying for insensitive, thoughtless, egomaniacs.
This "photo-op" was nothing but the Military Industrial Complex reminding Obama that even though he is the President he is still not in control of the military. Why else would the Whitehouse be out of the loop? The explanations I have heard regarding this "photo-op" story are bogus. This was meant to scare Americans, it was done with the President's plane, and it was done by forces in the government who don't like Obama's policies (Cheney-loyalists) of releasing torture memos. Think about it. Now the media is screaming about this and not about torture.

This was a dramatic reminder and a message to Obama "Don't think you can go after the previous administration without us retaliating" Just watch - I bet Obama in the coming weeks will back off the torture debate.

THERE IS NO OTHER EXPLANATION.
Can anyone say FEAR.  Over the weekend non-stop flooding of the airwaves with pandemic news, not to mention every day wall street corruption, unemployment, torture, Pakistan, Iraq, Afganastan and now.....someone ok's a 747 and two fighter jets fly over area near WTC.  Instilling fear does seem to be the motive here!
This is just another good example of why our country is in such mess. The governemnt wonks inside the beltway have a very loose grip on the day to day reality of the working man.
The government spends millions of dollars and thousands of hours on planning for macho graphics when they could have spent a few hundred to Photoshop Air Force One into a graphic in a couple minutes.
Brian,

Just a few short months ago, Pres. Obama and Congress blasted the auto execs. for flying to DC on thier private jets.  Now we have Louis Caldera authorizing a photo op (disquised as training) to fly an empty (no VIP's) 747 from DC to NYC, fly around for 30 min. and fly back to DC.  How much did the tax payers get to spend on this photo op?  Oh, you have to figure in the cost of the F-16.  Some things in Washington will never "CHANGE".  "I'm not fuss'in, just say'in".
Brian do you remember when a small single plane was circling the Washington DC area and people were afraid and thought we were going to be attacked again. Yes building were emptied and people were running in fear. Well Geroge W. Bush was  President and no one demanded the person's head on a plate. Yes we finally found out the aircraft was off couse and apologized for the mistake.  It seems when a mistake was made after 9/11 by the Bush Administration no problem, but with the current Administration we look for everyone who blinked to get fired.  When Cheroff made several mistakes with wrong statements and even hiring illegal immigrants to clean the National Security Offices of Homeland Security were these people could get what ever informtion they wanted for years and years. Not one person demanded firing nor did any New Yorker seem to be bothered with that problem. Yes we will always remember and look but it seems we over react more now then we did all those years after 9/11. I guess because I now live in California drama is an everyday event here.
Hi Brian:

This upsetting and terrifying. Just watching the video makes my skin crawl and makes my nerves on end. I can imagine how the people of NYC felt.

These are the kind of INCOMPETENT IDIOTS that are running our Country.  They are running our Country into the ground.

ITS TIME FOR A REAL CHANGE OF A WHOLE NEW GOVERNMENT.  A GOVERNMENT THAT CARES ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND THE COUNTRIES, SAFETY, FREEDOM AND WELL BEING.

If this happened under the Bush administration, heads would roll.  Under this new administration they always seem to turns their heads.  America needs to wake up!

I believe action should be taken and heads need to roll.  We need more than an apology, we need to see some action!

Thanks for reporting Brian, keep up the good work!
Marcia
The Presidents Press Secretary needs a slap in the face; he is condescending, irresponsible and finds a little too much of everything funny.
It is truly a matter of luck that no heart attacks or strokes resulted due to this master stroke of idiocy.  I live downtown (although not that far down), and had I seen that, I probably would have fainted. Not as resilient (or as young) as I was before 9/11.  No one should have been put through this.
It was completely irresponsible on the part of the administration to allow something like this to occur.  Common sense should have prevailed.  The fact that even the Mayor was not notified-shame on them.  I feel for the people of New York who had to re-live the horrors of 9/11.  Has everyone in our country forgot to use their brains!
So THIS is how we spend the taxpayers' dollars more wisely!  Same clowns, different suits.
Brian

Someone should pay for this? We the US taxpayers are paying for this stupidity as well as the trillion dollar budget, bailing out the banks, the auto makers, the insurance companies and all the other nonsense that our government can think of. If they wanted a picture of the plane with the Statue of Liberty in the background they could have photo shopped it. How much did this cost?
You're all a bunch of sheeple. Seriously. What happened on 9/11/2001 happened. We can't change that. Stop causing mass pandemia over every little thing. especially 'swine flu' garbage. The fly-over was for a promotional thing. If it was widely announced, it would have been grounds for an attack by some terrorist organization. So sit down, shut up, and enjoy the view. You have bigger things to be worried about. Like the whole country being under control by the government. It's already started happening, so stop worrying about little things that have no significance in your daily lives.
Brian, some one should pay, right?  Just no one important in the Obama administration?  Keep up the good, "unbiased" journalism.
How did I know, you criticize anyone in the Obama administration and your comment gets banned. I posted a rather good thought 2 hours ago and of course it didn't get posted.....
I'm sorry, but how can so many believe that someone is to blame, while inexplicably reasoning that whomever that may be, they can't be someone high up in President Obama's administration?  Is it not possilbe that in the midst of all the pomp of the first 100 days, President Obama's administration made a huge gaffe while trying to set-up incredible photo "opportunities?"  Seems not only plausible, but highly probable.
The White House official who approved the NYC Air Force One flyover should do the decent thing and resign.  If he does not, he should be fired.
The President should pay for this stupid mistake
he should have to make a apology to the people of New York City...just another STUPID mistake by the goverment
When is the administration going to roll out the "A" team?  This is beyond stupid!  I hope that not one person suffered a heart attack or stroke!  I do know for sure all New Yorkers had to relive the highest anxiety level since 9-11!  The entire staff responsible for this so-called "mistake" should be fired and stand trial for psychological terrorism with intent to do harm.  I'm not sure it was unintentional.
If I were the President, someone would be fired by now, no questions asked.
If I were the President, someone would be fired by now, no questions asked.
I was impressed to read Mr. Williams' blog on the Air Force 1 incident.  I am amazed that people do not hold President Obama responsible.  President Bush was held personally responsible for everything that happened in the US for 8 years.  Not many people seem to comment on the expense associated with the photo op, not to mention the carbon footprint of such an outing...
