Someone should pay for NYC air scare

I met an investment banker at a New York luncheon today who told me the mindset at her firm has been "re-set to a 9/11 mentality" after what happened in Lower Manhattan this morning.  Many in her office evacuated, along with many other firms and buildings. I'll link to the story here, but here's the lay version with my added bias: word started spreading through New York during the morning rush hour that a "jumbo jet flanked by a fighter jet" was flying low over the Hudson river near the southern tip of Manhattan.  Networks like ours switched our footing to preparation to report the incident. People who looked on from a distance were horrified at the sight. What's worse, people who were close to the "fly-over" were even more troubled -- as some of them recognized the world-famous livery -- the paint scheme on the fuselage: it was Air Force One. The real one. The fighter jet was real. Was the President on board?  Was he in jeopardy? Could this really be happening in the sky over New York?

The finger-pointing reached Olympian heights before lunch. The Air Force said they told everyone who needed to know, including the FAA and NYPD. The NYPD said they were told not to tell the public. It was apparently a "photo mission" (masked as a "training mission"?) to take pictures of the aircraft with the Statue of Liberty in the background.  I understand the need for pretty pictures of the aircraft against a dramatic backdrop, and I've flown a lot of miles with the air wing that operates Air Force One... but why was it staged during Monday morning rush hour? Why not make it a public event -- widely announced via electronic media -- and invite the public, a la an air show, to come to lower Manhattan with their cameras on, say, a Saturday morning to take their own pictures of this dramatic sight?

This was dangerously mishandled. As I said the other evening at a gathering of New York City firefighters: even after all these years, among many New Yorkers, 9/11 still feels like it was about 10 minutes ago. The pit is still there, though it's now a construction zone.  The losses don't go away. No one is bringing my neighbor back to me.  I will drive by his house on my way home from work tonight, and he won't be there. We still look up at the sky (in ways we never did before) when we hear low-flying aircraft, and we still worry.  Lower Manhattan is no place for an unnanounced low-altitude jumbo jet-and-fighter-jet flyover.

Someone should pay for this.

Now to the news of the day: we will have comprehensive coverage of the swine flu outbreak, and Mike Taibbi will cover the story above. We'll end on an uplifting example of Making a Difference... and we hope you can join us as we start a new week.

So I guess that photo op won't make it into the first 100 days primetime show. Stoooopid..., Y'all go ahead and keep the "perception" alive.  I miss the adults

Well if the federal government handles a pandemic outbreak of swine flu the same way they've dealt with the financial melt down It won't matter if you do everything right to prepare. They'll just take it all away and give it to New York, and of course the New York media will lie about what's happening.
Why does every "event" require that somebody "pay"?
It was "plane stupid" especially since in today's economic environment that photo shoot should have been photoshopped!  However, as a resident of Battery Park City, who's building was used as a temporary morgue during 9/11, I say forgive and forget the stupidity.  We have to  concentrate on spending our energy on the other significant problems we're facing (i.e., the economy, terroism and the swine flu).
P.S. forgot city and state...New York, NY
I am feeling a flashback to plenty of gaffes by the Bush Administration with this "flyover".  I can't help but yell out: what the h*** was something thinking??? Why did they think it was a good idea that the public wasn't told about this?  Do they think we the public are that stupid?  It's not like 9/11 is decades ago and there are few alive to remember it.  If I had been in Manhattan this morning, I would have panicked and freaked out, too.

I spent an extended weekend tending and photographing a friend's wedding and traveling back and forth out of state (including a trip to Logan), so all this business about swine flu that I discovered this morning is taking me by surprise.  It's feeling like deva vu from a few years ago.

Bravo & thank you to Dr. Wilson for taking in all the unwanted animals!  Such stories just warm this animal shelter volunteer's heart, even as it breaks when I see families and animals crying, sobbing, and being torn apart because of the financial crisis or worse calamities.  We need to care for the smallest and most helpless among us to be a good nation, a healthy nation, and Dr. Wilson has taken that message to heart.
I live in NH, was not even in NYC on 9/11, but I get anxiety when a plane flies too low. I can't begin to imagine how horrible this experience was for the people in NY. With all our tools to alter pictures on the computer, why was this even necessary?
Brian-keep this type of story coming.  It keeps reiforcing the American Spirit of helping others, including those who can't help themselves, our pets, and pets of others who can't take care of them.  This wonderful Doctor in Phoenix is inspiring.  Thanks for telling her story to us.
Someone should pay for this... and someone should pay for crashing the economy, and for making torture an American practice, and for myriad other things.  Apart from the long-suffering American people (a term that used to be applied to Russians) do you really imagine anyone will?
Am I the only one concerned about this?  There is something more here, folks.  Who is going to figure it out.
Brian,
THANK YOU!  I could not have expressed myself as well as you did regarding this fly over debacle.

I worked downtown on 9/11 next door to the twin towers, I was blessed to make it home that day, though the images I saw will be with me forever.

I still work downtown albeit for a different bank in a different location, one that can see the Statue of Liberty.  In a nano second the people in my office were back reliving 9/11 - petrified -- could this be happening again?

You are so right --- someone should pay for this.  Mr. President, what do you have to say?  How can it be justified to do this without informing the public?  Did the FAA, Air Force and Department of Defense think nobody would notice?  Answers please -- and more importantly do not ever do this again
Hi Brian - Thanks for the comments about the 'training/picture oppourtunity flight above Manhattan today.  You're right what were they thinking?  I was in my office at Yale when I heard the news on WCBS Radio and I will never forget it.  This idea that things should be kept from the public is getting out of hand.  Secrecy is what tainted the last administration.  I admire this one for their open ness and human response to stuff like this.

Joan
How incredibly stupid this photo flyby was. The reaction of the people of New York says that the 9/11 fear is not gone. Heads should roll for this stupid stunt. I hope we have not heard the last of this.
Brian:  thanks for writing what was on all of our minds.

An all too typical government bonehead disconnect.  It scared me even here in Florida, thinking about my colleagues who had to evacuate the Javits Bldg. on 9/11 and not knowing that two of their co workers (Marion Britton and Waleska Martinez) were on United Flight 93.

We have an inspirational new President, but the Federal arrogance still runs deep.

Hi Brian:

Hope your weekend was a good one.

I just read your post.  How could anyone justify doing this or even think they could by saying they told them not to alert the public?  Do they think people can't hear or see any longer?  That the people of New York don't have a memory?  What a horrible feeling it must have been for anyone within ear and eye shot when this happened.  The feelings, memories and nightmares that the people of New York had to go through all over again must have been horrific.  I agree, why was this not done on a Saturday and everyone given enought of an alert that it was to take place?  You might feel you are biased but you are totally right to be outraged.  Sorry, just had to vent on this.

Looking forward to your broadcast tonight and of course your "Making a Difference" segment.  Friday's post and the links to it were terrific and really ended the week on such a good note.  Thanks we really did need it.
Brian I remember and will never forget as I heard the first plan but saw the second. Even out hear in California I find myself looking up when I hear a plan it's just become normal after 9/11. I was in Jesrey on Sept. 11, 2001.

Everyone's talking about the Swine Flu out hear in Calfornia. I wish the Republicans hadn't demaded the funding be taking out of the Stimulus Package. Many people mainly on boarder States with Mexico really could use the help now. Rep. Obey really push for the Pandemic Funding I guess he turned out to be right after all. I'm glad that Texas Gov. Perry didn't go ahead and Secede as now the citizens of Texas not only have the recession but the swine flu to worry about.

It was interesting to hear Dick Cheney ask for transparentcy for the memos and torture documents. For 8 years the Bush Administration had every listed as classified for National Security reason only allowing what they choose to leak out. I really think President Obama might want to keep the really horrorible things done out of public eye. Things done to the prisoners would shock you to the bone most are unhuman. At lease we know what topic can bring the former Vice President Dick Cheney back to Fox News as we see President Bush has nothing to say about anything. It was nice to hear Judge Bybee feels sorry for helping pass the torture policy. As even Senator McCain said we did torture and it is a crime, but we should just move on and forget about it. At lease we know if no one is prosecuted for the crime of torture it will allow other countries to do the same in the future.

Yesterday it was 91 degrees today it's nippy and wet talk about Climate change. I saw the pictures of New York City this weekend that Lester showed. Looks like I made the wrong more it's not so sunny anymore in Southern California.

see you same time same place
Good Evening Mr.Williams, A fine broadcast this evening. First of all the report by Mr.Bazell on the swine flu outbreak seems to be reaching global proportions. The cases of the flu seem to be mild in the United States, yet with 44 cases reported in 5 States one should  definitely pay attention to developments.
The report by Michelle Kosinski from Mexico City showed heightened measures of alerts with all the public buildings closed including the schools. The rising amount of deaths due to this flu and seeing people walk around with masks on their faces is really disturbing. All the patients flooding the hospitals with pneumonia is terrible and especially being separated from the family members due to spreading of the virus. Testing does take time and until the threat is confined and stopped the risks of infection continue.
The report by Mr.Costello about travel warnings is certainly something to pay attention and caution. Hearing from different correspondents around the world regarding preparations and testing people coming through the airports makes one just want to stay at home. This will have an effect on the travel industry with consumers not choosing to travel to certain areas for vacation. I hope things take a more positive turn soon.
The report by Mr.Taibbi concerning the look-a-like Air Force One Jumbo Jet flying low followed by an F-16 fighter jet over Manhattan is inexcusable. The video of the jet flying over was very scary and brings to mind September 11th. Seeing the people evacuate from the buildings scared of what they were seeing in the air was frightening. This should not have happened and whoever is responsible should be reprimanded. As you stated Mr.Williams, "Someone should pay for this." I don't think a little apology is going to make up for what happened and hearing the New York City Mayor's reaction he was definitely furious. Somebody should be hel accountable.

On another note the "Making A Difference" segment by Maria Menounos was really nice this evening. The ranch in Arizona taking in all kinds of animals left by owners who can no longer take care of them due to foreclosures and losing jobs is a nice haven for the animals to spend their lives. It is heartwrenching for the owners to leave the pets behind at the ranch. but all the animals seem to be happy and at least the owners can have the comfort of knowing theier pets are in a good environment. This woman is certainly doing her best for the animals. Nice Piece!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO

Hi Brian,

Welcome back. I hope that you had a great week. It looks like it's going to be a busy week for you and your colleagues.

Dr. Robert Bazell has been doing an outstanding job keeping us informed about the swine flu. Also
Michelle Kosinski has been covering a tough situation in Mexico, not only the flu cases and deaths, but an earthquake today. She definitely deserves an award after this is over with, and hoping that it will be.

It's inexcusable as to what happened in New York. Someone in The White House Military Ofc. should be fired! It's not enough to basically say,"oops!" after thousands of New Yorkers were having to relive scenes from 9/11,as in a 747 flying low over Manhattan. For God's sake Pres. Obama, they didn't even tell your Press Sec.,please fire someone!

Ms. Glendon, who is declining an award from Notre Dame,
because Pres. Obama is giving a speech and his views differ form hers? Who do you think you are, Ms. Glendon? You are a very narrow minded person who is also extremely shallow, superficial, ungrateful, and really just a plain old witch! How did you ever graduate...don't tell me,and don't lay this on the Cathlic Church. They're probably embarrassed by you.

Anyway...

Thank God for the Dr. Wilsons of the world. Not only does she take care of humans, she takes care of beings that have no hope whatsoever but to depend on humankind. Thank you, Dr. Deborah Wilson.

See you tomorrow, Brian. I won't be quite so stirred up.

Vicki

I work in 101 hudson street. This was not a simple photo-op with plane just flying low over the Hudson river. The plane was flying between and at the buildings only to bank sharply at the last minute to avoid a collision. Anyone who was in the building and saw the plane coming at them thought that they were experiencing their last moments on earth.  It was beyond cruel and irresponsible. I felt so scared, my body was shaking and I still feel sick and scared and I cannot stop crying.   The plane approached jersey City three times and I saw it bank directly towards my building on the first run through. Then it came back and almost clipped the Goldman Sachs building and it flew between the Goldman Sachs building, the new office-condo towers and hudson street towers.
Didnt someone have the forethought to make this unspeakable act of inducing panic to a city publicly known beforehand. Imagine a realitive that lost a loved one on 9/11 sitting in an office building and seeing this. Emotional damage is hard to put a price on. A crime was committed and
someone should pay.
How shocking!  And for an official to offer the equivalent of a "my bad" as an apology is certainly not acceptable.  I don't live any where near New York, but to see the video clip was very disturbing to me, and I can't even imagine how frightening for those in the Manhattan area.  Those who planned this debacle should have considered photoshopping the photo that they wanted.  Someone's head should roll for this.
I hope the person  who made this horrible decision is fired.  This was just not a bad idea, this borders on lunacy.  Whoever made this idea a reality should not be anywhere near Air Force One.
I hope the person  who made this horrible decision is fired.  This was just not a bad idea, this borders on lunacy.  Whoever made this idea a reality should not be anywhere near Air Force One.
Good evening, Brian. Great to see you back this evening.

It infuriates me to think of what the people in New York city went through this morning see that. I can't believe there wasn't any word spread about it, and you're absolutely right, it could have been a special event taking place on a Saturday afteroon with people highly informed and ready with their cameras. There's just no explanation for it. I'm sincerely sorry you, and all of you in New York (especially all of the evacuated people), had to go through this feeling once again.

Great "Making A Difference" report tonight.

Thank you for the broadcast, Brian!

See you tomorrow evening!
Take care, and have a good night.
-Cary

I couldn't agree more. But who will be man or women enough to stand up and take the blame? Who will be man or women enough to say I'm responsible. As with alot of things, it is amazing how no one seens to ever know whose fault it is and no one will take the blame. I don't live in New York but the times I have visited, the sound of a plane catches my attention. In my opinion, this was very disrespectful to all New Yorkers and especially to the families of those who lost loved ones on 9/11.
Anyone think something being tested. defence system i hope.
Listen. I live in california. I love New York City. However, holding the Whitehouse accountable is too much for me. The Whitehouse did all the necessary precautions prior to the flight; by notifying the military, the FAA, and NYPD.

Once again, before making headlines by putting frustration towards Obama (because you get press when you do that), show that same disgust towards the FAA and the NYPD. That's who should have notified Bloomberg's office, not Obama
It seems to me many people have forgotten 9/11. especially now that people feel the need to release our security and secret documents. Big deal, just a fly over. It was just a reminder.
As I watched this evening's news about the Swine Flu I couldn't help but rewind what I was seeing on the screen.  As I replayed it I couldn't believe that the Mexican nationals that were wearing the masks were being treated by health professionals who were not  wearing gloves themselves.  Temperatures were being taken and tongue depressors were being used without  gloves.  Can't help but wonder who's actually spreading the flu?
Brian,
I think the problem is us people in the midwest outside of NY and DC, simply do not get it.  We should but we need people to remind us of the level of fear within NY and DC.

I am sure it was clearly that those who planned this simply did not think.  I am sure they will never make this mistake again, they may make mistakes, but not this one.
Brian:  You led off your broadcast with the question, "What were they thinking?" but when you got to the story you never answered it.  What was the point of the ohoto-shoot that caused so much consternation?  What was the "mission"?  And BTW, what did it cost?  Air Force One doesn't fly cheap; neither do F-16s.  Bad job!
Hi Brian:

Talk about dumb and dumber.  How could anyone in the Air Force or the FAA even consider such a stunt over downtown NYC, like that 747 (Air Force 1 duplicate) being chased by an Air Force fighter jet?  If I were the President I would have some military officer relieved from duty, and some civilian official fired within the next 48 hours.  Thanks,

Robert Seidenberg
P.S.

Brian, I didn't even read what you wrote in your blog first. I just responded to your broadcast and was watching MSNBC today, when the fly over happened.

Louis Caldera took responsibility for it. But it just doesn't make sense.

All the phone calls and pics that took place during and afterwards. All the extreme panic that could have taken place as in people trampling each other, possible heart attacks, panic attacks, And oh,read this Mr.Caldera : Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome being reactivated! I suffered from PTSS 10 yrs. ago, the first time. Now when I see something that reminds me of that time,I have nightmares and can't function.

Anyway, it just sounds too convenient to sweep it under the rug.

I'm just tired of all the coverups and just want to know the truth about things. That would keep us from going crazy with paranoia.
Look at the Vietnam war, J.F.K.'s death, Nixon and Watergate, Bill Clinton's tryst, Iraq, waterboarding, etc.
I'm sick of it all.

Vicki
Brian, I thought you should've had your press-pass pulled after the "interview" that you gave to McCain and Palin, which basically gave them a free 15 min commercial on a major network (contrary to the interview that David Letterman, of people, did with McCain where he actually called him out and asked him to explain, or justify his statements), but I really couldn't have put this sentiment better, and I think you really captured the fear that still lives in so many of us here in NYC.

Thank you for opining on this, and for your honesty on how this affected both you and so many residents of this city. That the federal government would torment their very citizens in this manner is egregious at best, and near criminal at worst. Your alternative was a great one, and should've been an obvious one, and it's a shame that nobody in our elected, or appointed office could possibly have thought of something similar.
I was so upset after seeing this news of a plane flying over New York, and seen how people ran for their lives and I say that literly ran for their lives! I can not believe our own goverment would let this happen to the people who live in fear of planes flying in this matter! Do our goverment not remember what happened on 9/11! Or do they just do care that many people could of been hurt by this matter! Its just very upsetting to see people running in fear, and in your news broad cast you didnt say if anyone was hurt but this stampe of people running in fear from office buildings or busineses! Our goverment should be held accountable for this action! Like you said "what were they thinking".
Shame, Shame,  Obama  Adminstration, they talk about wasteful spending??  It looks like they set a GOOD EXAMPLE!! How much do you think that flight COST?? Mr. President
At one time I watched NBC Nightly News almost every night. I don't anymore and tonight's episode (4/27/2009) was a perfect example of why I don't. The story was about Air Force One flying over Manhattan with a military fighter jet in close pursuit. On the NBC broadcast I got a lot of "first-hand accounts" of what people saw and how they felt, but it was never really clear why the plan flew over the city. I heard that it was Ok'd by the White House Military Office and it was FAA approved, but I never heard why it was done. If it was reported, it was not clear to me. I thought it was for a movie shot or something.

On the CBS broadcast the story was easily a third the length of your spot. I would say CBS ran the story for maybe 30 seconds. At the end, there was a shot of the plane, with the fighter jet in pursuit, flying past the Statue of Liberty and Katie Couric said something like, "The White House Military Office wanted to update footage of Air Force One flying past major US landmarks." The story was summed up in a matter of seconds. True, I didn't get all of the first-hand accounts of how people felt, but I got the news. That is why I watch the news. I want the news. I don't want to know how people feel about the news.

Good luck,

Greg DeBacker

Hi Brian:

I just wanted to thank you for the very, very good information you provided us about the Swine Flu.  All the reporters are so informative, I just with we could have gotten even more information, but God help us if we would have to forego one of those dreaded commerical breaks.   Robert's report was so very informative and I am sure eased a few nerves for now. I hope you continue the good work of reporting this story to us.

I already did a good rant on the stupid stunt in New York this morning so all I'll say is that the people of New York did not deserve this cruel and very disturbing incident and for the White House War Department to just say "I apologize", nothing more is horrible.

Your "Making A Difference" segment was so very touching and loving.  What Dr. Wilson is doing for these animals is fantastic but what she is doing for those who have to give them up is even more astonishing.  Some of these pets are given up by people that truly loved them but could no longer care for them and to think that someone is out there that will take care of them and not leave them to end in suffering and neglect is so loving.  Thanks again for the great report.

Looking forward to tomorrow's post and broadcast
Granted, my experience with New York ~ the people & the city ~ is minimal. And I was not in NYC on 9-11. But to pull this stunt at any time of day in any American city without public warning, but ESPECIALLY in NYC, is cruel. It was cruel & insanely stupid.
I am furious!

My family and friends all work in downtown Manhattan. My father is a retired firefighter as well as a past president and vice-president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association.

The panic in my brother-in-law's voice today was unnerving. He was accross from the World Trade Center on 9/11 and called us to find out why people were jumping off the building that day (this was before it was put on news). Today my nephews in Jersey City running down 38 flights, because they thought their building was going to be struck by the planes (they have photos of the planes). All of this for a PHOTOSHOOT.

With all the bumper stickers that say NEVER FORGET, I guess our own government forgot! Shame on them!

I only hope that this photoshoot has nothing to do with President Obama's 100 days in office and his feelings on terrorism.

I watched all the news channels tonight and I cannot believe the limited news coverage this event has received. Thank you for a least reporting it tonight as well as this blog.

Shame on the rest of the media!

Kathleen Sforza, Staten Island, NY

Hi Brian!
You would look great in a bow tie.  Have you ever thought about wearing one?
As New Yorkers, all of you should be appalled at the antics over the Manhattan skyline today.  As those who lost loved ones on Sept. 11, 2001, we are aghast at the stupidity of the beaurocrat who allowed this to happen.  Not only is it insensitive, but a waste of manpower and jet fuel.  Perhaps next time they will think twice and send the equivalent amount to someone like the lovely lady who protects those unfortunate animals.  It would be a much better use of taxpayers' dollars.
Thanks for all your sincere and considerate reporting.
“All those little porky things that the House put in, the money for the [National] Mall or the sexually transmitted diseases or the flu pandemic, they’re all out,” Schumer said.

Jackie no one in California is going to be without a vaccine because of anything a Republican did, or didn't do. That money didn't make it into the porkulus bill, but it did make it into the ominous bill the democrats porked out and claimed "that's Bush budget bill" President Bush asked for 7.1 billion for influenza pandemic back in 2005 before the children took over congress in Jan 2007. I'm not sure how it turned out knowing how much more important Lawyers and leaches are to democrats than the greater good. Good luck out there.
Brian, a journalist of your caliber, what are you doing writing for this rag called MSNBC?  NBC has little to no credibility these days, and I hate to see your good talents go unnoticed by the millions who watch "the other news network" every night.
The apology from the White House stated that they were sorry if this action caused confusion or disruption.

How insenitive! The confusion and disruption wasn't the problem, it was the fear and panic that this stunt caused. The people of NYC who lived through 9/11 had to relive their worst nightmare.  I can't believe there there were no warnings or announcements to the public and the local NYC government.

The worst part of this experience is that it was for a photo opp!  When would it ever be justified to create so much raw emotion, panic, lost time on the job and confusion throughout the NYC government for so little!
The disregard our government seems to have for our nation's financial situation is underscored by decisions like this, notwithstanding the obvious likeliness that such an operation would cause panic among those in NYC today.

As has already been mentioned numerous times, a simple Photoshop project could have achieved whatever the objectives of this mission were and would have certainly saved (dare I say) millions of taxpayer dollars.

I'm sure that it would likely take weeks of (costly) congressional hearings to find out exactly how expensive today's operation was (this will probably now happen, exacerbating the fiscal impact of this project), but I feel that I can safely say that the return on investment would never pencil out.

These days, everyone in business is having to get creative to function within their budgetary constraints.  I find it infuriating that our government can't seem to hold itself to a standard of increased fiscal responsibility.

Brian, I think that your idea of making the flyover into a public event is brilliant, but only after making the determination that the activity is truly beneficial to our nation in the first place.

It's clear that our government isn't thinking like a business.  It doesn't have to.  Too bad the same rules don't apply for the rest of us.
This was CRUEL and THOUGHTLESS -- and all so they could make a buck off of souvenir pictures and waste taxpayers money.  I PROPOSE that any money made off those pictures goes to 9/11 funds to help victims of the tragedy.  Try and make something good out of the pain and fear that was caused today. This impacted people outside of NYC, too.  There were many people that didn't live there but were there that day and there are families just now beginning to put back the pieces back together from how 9/11 impacted their families. There are children that are still healing from what they saw on the TV that day.  This was CRUEL and THOUGHTLESS -- and all so they could make a buck off of souvenir pictures.  I PROPOSE that any money made off those pictures goes to 9/11 funds to help victims of the tragedy. Try and make something good out of the pain and fear that was caused today.
My best friend is from Staten Island and when he saw the video of this event, he said: "What insensitive imbecile ever thought this up without advising the people of New York?" I hope the President addresses this incident publicly and heads roll for this insanely and indefensible action by government bureaucrat. Sadly, this lack of sensitivity is not uncommon when people reach higher offices(public and private).
Instead of scaring the people of NYC to death, has anyone considered the use of Photoshop?  The plane could easily be placed electronically in front of any landmark picture.  Not a very fiscally responsible decision, but not a big surprise coming from this administration.  CEOs are crucified for the use of private jets; I would like to find out the actual cost to taxpayers for this debacle.
I remember September 11, 2001 very well and was deeply saddened by the loss of life and the attack on America.  All of this for a photo opportunity...a photo opportunity??? What's next, a practice bombing run over Chicago?  I had real hope for this Administration and yet stupid people keep popping up all over.
Brian,

To say that this was dangerously mishandled was an understatement! As I watched the footage during the west coast broadcast, the thought that struck me was the message it sent to the world... how effective the terrorist attack was all these years later. It showed the terrorist states just how scared we really are! That is something the White House can't erase with an apology.
