What's in the news

By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

On Fridays, and not just out of work evasion, I like to feature some of the pieces of interest that we've come across. Today that would include The Candy Bomber, the Perfect-Gamer Bus culture and what we define as "necessity" these days.  And what may be the sweetest story to come from the White House Press Briefing Room (and the White House Press Corps, for that matter) in some time.  And after what's been a busy week around here, I will simply wish you a good weekend, and hope that you will join my friend Lester Holt this weekend, and hope that you'll look fo rus back here on Monday night.

Thanks for the bird story it helped with knowing new life is special.

As everyone tries to adjust to the fact the United States does Torture, the reasons are starting to sound like trying to lie their way out of trouble. Blame can be spread to everyone even the American people. It's shameful and illegal to torture but we have to now deal with it like adults. If the US decides not to charge those who committed the crime, others will follow suit now and in the future. I can tell you first hand all our troops need counseling after what they have seen and been through. Many who fine reasons to justify criminal Torture have never been in the Military and don't realize our troops follow orders. Yes I got put in my place when visiting Peaches as I felt different. A Commander was nice to me and said she's in the Military now she has to follow the orders of the Commander-in-Chief. We right now have soldiers in jail for torture while only following the orders of Torture from the Commaner-in-Chief. Yes I am a Mother so I put my two cents in anyway. The Torture crimes committed will be prosecuted by the other Counties who's citizens were held. What's sad is Americans don't realize some of those tortured were actully innocent people with no contact with al qeada.

I went on David Gregory's twitter and saw his list of members. I noticed Karl Rove is on the list I wonder if David will have him as a guest on Meet the Press. It's nice to see so many people using Twitter for quick information and thoughts.

I really don't blame President Obama with holding back on the gun laws. This country is so messed up and Fox News is spreading uneducated information it's no wonder people are confused. Rep. Bachmann is clueless about CO2 and would make a Junior High School teacher embarrassed she knows nothing. Rep. John Boehner is so far out there he thinks Cows gas is the cause of Globel Warming. Just think if our Law Makers are uneducated who will have the kids. I wondered why the Law Makers asked Tim Geihner such stupid questions, I realized all of the failed math so Tim was talking over their heads. We do have to start paying more attention to educating Americans.

have a great and safe weekend all

Best to Lisa, Laurel, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Lori, Anna, Matt and all
Good evening, Brian! It sure has been a busy week for you all, I could imagine. Though I hope it's been a good one!

Thank you for all the great articles you've posted today. I love "The Candy Bomber", I had never heard of that until now . . . how interesting! All great articles, and especially loved the sweet baby robin story. My Nana also has baby robins living in a nest right outside her door, but it's pretty amazing how these robins don't mind all the comotion of the White House. Also, loved all the small jokes in the article. Always look forward to seeing what you've come across, thanks!

I noticed your 'typo' at the end of your post this evening, but don't worry about it. It tells us we aren't the only ones who have the occasional 'typo'!

Looking forward to seeing you this nice Friday evening! For the entire east coast this will be one beautiful Spring weekend!

Take care, and have a great weekend, Brian!
See you soon,
-Cary

Best to all of you viewers out there, take care everybody!

P.S.

I loved your cameo on 30 Rock last night! The timing is so funny because I just recently heard from a fellow viewer of your first 30 Rock appearance during season one, unfortunately I missed it. So this really made my night! Such a great show, it's so great that you can take some time to have some fun. Always look forward to seeing you on Jon Stewart and David Letterman's shows, and pretty soon Conan's! Afterall, you have to do something with all of that humor, right? I hope you do host Saturday Night Live again, you did such an awesome job on the show! And what better musical guest than Feist? The two songs they performed on that night have been my current obsession this week...

Mr. Williams,

Nice cameo on 30 rock last night. Your part made me laugh out loud.
Hi Brian:

Saw the clip of you receiving your award last night.  Congratulations.  You deserve it.

Thank you for the great links to some terrific stories.  After all the horrible and sad news this week, this is just what we need to end the week on.  Happy feelings and some laughs.   Thank you for sharing these with us.

Saw David Gregory on Morning Joe today and it appears his Meet the Press is going to be a good one this weekend.  I really enjoy his reporting.

I look forward to your broadcast tonight and hope you and your family have a wonderful and restful weekend.  After the busy week you've had you deserve it.
Please have someone contact me.  I have jobs, marketing/advertising/sales in healthcare. Last week it was 30 per state, now I am up to 50 per state.  How can I find people who WANT to work??  You have people on your station who want to work, but I cannot get to them.  I only get people calling me from ads who have excuses and do not really want work.  I need help desperately, for people who want/desire/need work asap.  Can't someone call me and help me get my word out???
Thanks for that story from Luke Russert.  I'll be graduating from college on May 17, and if you go around asking my fellow seniors (myself included) what their plans are, most will say "Living at home with the parents until I find a job."

At this rate if I can find a job in retail so I can earn some money and then take the time to travel before I begin my career, that will help pass the time until more jobs are available.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, A fine Friday evening broadcast! First of all the report by Ann Curry from Baghdad showed how much concern Commander Odierno has for the spike in violence by al-qaeda in Iraq. Two suicide bombings today and two yesterday killing altogether 145 people is horrible and it seems to be in mostlt Shiite neighborhoods. Hearing the bombers were female is awful. And the fact the violence has risen it would pose questions as the whether the Iraq security is ready to takeover the region. It is also extremely disturbing the taliban are moving closer to Islamabad the capital of Pakistan. The police are really in no position to stop them altogether. It makes the whole region very chaotic and dangerous.
It is awful so many innocent lives are lost and one hopes for a peaceful resolution. It is a very hard battle, but I hope peace overcomes soon.
Great Reporting Ann! Stay Extra Safe Ann!

On another note the report by Mr.Bazell about the flu outbreak raises much worry becasue nothing can be done at the moment and as stated in the report one just has to wait. People need to pay attention and learn the warning signs, but it is difficult with no real vaccine developed by scientists. I hope the outbreak ends soon.

The report of the young 12year old girl who pitched a perfect game is great! And striking out all the boys! It is wonderful she gets to throw out the first pitch at the Mets game!

Nice pictures of the baby robins in the nest! Nature at its best!

The report by Dawna Friezen from London about slowing down is a good idea. The pace seems to be frantic and it is good to take time and slow down alittle. We all have to rush all the time everyday and we need to stop and enjoy some quiet time. Hopefully, we can all spare some time!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Have a wonderful weekend! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard! Enjoyed seeing you on Rachel Maddow's Show (Liked the maps!), Morning Joe and MSNBC News! Excellent Reporting!
XOXO

Evening, Brian!

So great seeing Luke Russert on the broadcast tonight! Wonderful report from him on college graduates looking for jobs. He's so great at his work, and is a big role model to people my age.

Also great seeing Ann Curry on from Baghdad this evening. Thanks to her for all of her wonderful reporting overseas. Stay safe Ann! And of course as always, stay safe Richard Engel!

Thank you for the broadcast, Brian. Many seriously concerning stories covered, along with some great uplifting ones! Great to see the ones you mentioned in your post today featured on the air. Here's the new cover of The New Yorker someone linked on Twitter, I thought was worth seeing: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/toc/2009/04/27/toc_20090420 They always have something interesting on their cover.

I Want to wish you a great weekend. We'll join Lester over the break, and see you back on Monday!

Take Care,
-Cary

Best to all of you viewers out there!
Hi Brian,

I heard this on MSNBC today and hope NBC will follow up on it next week. The two female american journalists (one is Lisa Ling's sister),is on trial or getting ready to face trial in N.Korea.I had been wondering what had happened to them over the last couple of weeks. I'd also like to know how the american journalist is doing in Iran. Her father said that she was on a hunger strike. The way that both of these countries feel about women,as though they shouldn't have a voice in anything is very disturbing, especially when they think they can push american women around who were just doing their jobs, reporting.

I saw Ann Curry in Iraq. The violence for the people have escalated again. There, women are now brainwashed into suicide bombing. My brother Shawn, will be returning in a matter of weeks. Even though he'll be in the same area, and it was safer back then,I hate to see him return. He's forty yrs. old.

On a lighter note, I saw you on 30 rock last night. It was the first time I watched it. I thought you were going to be doing more than answering a phone and be finnished in 10 seconds, if that long. But you were great and I fell in love with Tina Fey's character.

The photos at the White House of the robbins were awesome pictures, a great and innocent side of life. I was worried though, when the airplane invaded the White House airspace for a few min.

Oh God, I almost forgot. I understand about Blago and the NBc reality show in Costa Rica, "I'm a Celebrity,Get Me Out of Here". I wish now that the judge had allowed him to go. I'm sure after eating bugs,Blago would have tried to make a few back door deals with the other contestants. That man is an old fashioned flim flam man.

Brian, have a great weekend. I'll be catching Lester narrating the "Future Earth" on Sun., MSNBC at 10p.m.

Vicki
I think Brian Williams needs a larger type font on his teleprompter.  Or maybe he should start wearing his glasses on the air.  On Wednesday's Nightly News, Brian informed us that Hillary Clinton had called the instability in Pakistan a "moral threat" to world peace.  Meanwhile, over Brian's left shoulder we saw a picture of Ms. Clinton along with the words "Mortal Threat" (Thursday's New York Times confirmed that Ms. Clinton had used the word "mortal" rather than "moral").  Maybe Brian is suffering from eye strain as a result of spending too much time playing his favorite video game--Moral Kombat.
In case there is anyone out there who was unable to watch Friday's Nightly News, here is some of what you missed:

*A three minute segment on the U.S. auto industry.  The segment could have been done in half that time, but we all know how much Brian loves American cars.
*A discombobulated three minute segment from Ann Curry in Iraq.  I think it would really help if she was given a teleprompter instead of making her rely on her written notes.  Also, it would help the viewers if Curry's comments could be subtitled.  She speaks so fast that it's often difficult to understand what she's saying.
*A two-and-a-half minute segment from Luke Russert on the difficulty in finding jobs even for people who have college and graduate degrees.  That was actually the entire story.  Russert could have said it in fifteen seconds.  I had to laugh when Russert asked one woman, "So you thought going to grad school would better your job prospects?"  Her response was, "Isn't that pretty much why everybody goes to grad school?"  If there was a cartoon bubble over her head, it would have read "DUH!"  Brian introduced Luke as "a special member of our family."  Why is he special?  Because his father worked for NBC?
*Another two-and-a-half minute segment on some Londoners who want to slow things down.  I'm not sure what the point was.  This story was mostly about Dawna Friesen.  There's Dawna gazing at some flowers!  There's Dawna writing a letter!  There's Dawna eating lunch (twice)!  There's Dawna switching off her phone!  There's Dawna sunbathing!   This is what airs on a network news broadcast?  It looked more like a reality show than a news story.  How about showing Dawna reporting some news?
*A forty second story about some robins that hatched in a bush on the White House lawn.  I guess Bo was unavailable.
*Brian read a twenty second promo for Matt Lauer's interview with Capt. Richard Phillips that will air next week.

Meanwhile, there was no mention of the South African election, the protests going on in Bangkok or the fighting in Sri Lanka.  But we certainly know a lot about Dawna Friesen.  Well done, NBC!
Brian,

You are the best, and I never watch any other news!

But lately, Chuck Todd has been making me crazy!  Please tell him that the President is always called "President Obama" even if he doesn't like him.  The "Mr. Obama" is so disrespectful, I might have to rethink watching NBC Nightly News!

Thanks for the wonderful job you do!!!
The news media should be ashamed of yourselves for feeding off of the "Hybrid" strain of the Flu. Not only will you not change the name but you continue to panic the public with your continued coverage.

You no longer report the news you make it then you make money off of it. You, the news media, are no better than lawyers or any other bottom feeders. If you all had an ounce of dignity or any ethics at all you would give this issue it's five minutes and move on!

The media only adds fuel to fire storm of your own making. Tonight your going to have extended coverage! That's outrages. What the hell are you going to talk about?

P.S. If you don't have anything new to report then don't waste our time by pretending you do either.
Brian

It's a shame you are only showing emails of what people are doing now, but not recognizing people like my father, who showed acts of kindness for over two decades.
Until he was diagnosed with lung cancer, my father, Mario D'Auria, went to the local hospital, every Sunday, to offer haircuts and shaves, free.
He made people feel better, and while he did it, he sang to them, since everyone called him the singing barber, which was his trade, his whole life.
He just stopped doing it, last year, due to his illness, but his acts of kindness, was for many years, and everyone from Norfolk, Va. loved him for it.

                         His Loving Son
                               Mario D'Auria Jr.
