U.S. military to release prisoner photos

Posted: Thursday, April 23, 2009 11:56 PM by Daily Nightly Editor

by Jim Miklaszewski, NBC News Chief Pentagon Correspondent

U.S. officials tell NBC News the Pentagon and military are preparing to release as many as 2,000 photos from more than 400 separate cases involving alleged prisoner abuse at U.S. military prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan, and for the first time may include prisoner abuse photos from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The photos are being released in response to a federal lawsuit filed by the ACLU.

One U.S. official said the photos are "not as bad as those from Abu Ghraib," the prison where U.S. military guards stripped prisoners naked and threatened them with guard dogs, but "they're not good."

Descriptions of some of the prisoner abuse photos include:

* A prisoner shoved up against a wall as military guards or interrogators appear to threaten to sexually assault him with a broomstick.

* Female soldiers posing with hooded, shackled prisoners who were stripped naked.

* Hooded prisoners on transport planes with Playboy magazines opened to pictures of nude women on their laps.

Most of the 2,000 photos are those that were confiscated in more than 400 military investigations into prisoner abuse between 2001 and 2005.

The military at first was prepared to limit their response and release only 21 photos sought by the ACLU in a federal lawsuit, but Centcom Commander David Petraeus ordered that all 2,000 photos be released at once to keep from "dragging this issue out forever."

As of now the photos are expected to be released May 28.

Critics are already claiming the still unreleased photos will provide proof that prisoner abuse was not the result of  "a few bad apples" but was widesrpead and sanctioned by top Bush administration officials.

I'm glad they are emptying Gitmo. Now there will be room for bias reporters and all the legislators that have seen fit to spend my tax dollars to keep a float the greedy bankers so they can cash their bonuses I've helped in providing as a hard working American. Give them all the "broom handle" for me!
Why don't we go ahead and release the names of all our CIA agents around the world to show how open (or should I say stupid) our new administration really is.  We have reached such a pathetic state of appeasement its no longer funny.  In no time, we will be the laughing stock of the world.
Peter Hoekstra knows what he's talking about when he worries that documents showing that Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats were briefed on all interrogation procedures and approved them.
Those documents need to be found NOW!
Remember Sandy Berger's trip to the National Archives, where he stuffed documents (faulting Bill Clinton for not dealing with terrorism) in his pants and stole them?

Obama and Reporters seem to be pleased at destroying confidents in our Miltary and Intelligence people by showing ONLY one side of the situation, durning the whole war efforts in Iraq. There has been little to NO reports of what the enemy has done to our troops or others as a comparison. I believe that we were a lot more humane. They reportly skined our people, burned them alive, burned their eyes out, broke their limb,or raped the women, all before killing them by cuting their throats or shooting them in the head. That is why our people remains were protected on their returns to their families. The press would sure like to show all that gore, as it would sell more news, but destroy the families and prevent volunteerism of our young men. War is HELL as related in the pass. So they wanted to destroy somebody, to sell news.
Thank the ACLU for getting these photos into the hands of the very people who are killing us. Maybe the ACLU should go defend our captives that are in the hands of the enemy. Forgot they behead them in a few days. ACLU is never on time
What possible good can this do?  There is only one reason to release these photos, and that is to try to further damage our reputation.  War is ugly, and ugly things happen.  And when military laws are broken, then military punishment should be dealt.
This administration is a disgrace to the people of the United States. Most people could care less if some terrorist who was part of the group who killed 3,000 innocent Americans gets tortured.
Why don't you realease photos of what was done to American prisoners in previous wars??? It is far worse that stripping people naked and putting dog collars on them.Wake up!
I have NO compassion for what is done to POW"S by the US. That is war, it is pretty. You are killing our soldiers fighting as we speak by doing this.
You people NEVER EVER side with AMERICA.
I think it is treason to release these pictures. I also believe that the aclu is anti american.
Why isn't the ACLU seeking release of photographs depicting the charred, mutilated, and dismembered corpses of the thousands who died in the US on 9/11 at the hands of Islamic terrorists?

I have yet to see one such photograph.

Where is the balance?  Where are the photos of Gitmo prisoners reading Harry Potter novels, eating Halal dishes, and receiving medical care?

Where are the photos of their American counterparts, Americans in al-Qaeda prisons?  They're around: shredded corpses, beheaded, mutilated.

Certainly the US is imperfect in its war against terrorism - that is already abundantly clear.  But has the US truly been harsh to its al-Qaeda captives?

Let's televise a debate about the subject between a Gitmo captive and American captive of al-Qaeda.

At one podium you'll have a guy in a clean, orange jumpsuit, accompanied by an ACLU lawyer, well-fed on a Halal diet, eager to go home and eager to complain about waterboarding and harsh interrogations and air conditioning.  At the next podium you'll have a coffin attended by a medical examiner reading an autopsy report detailing disembowlment and dismemberment.

The ACLU's outrage is inversely proportional to the harshness of the rigors of captivity.  Only an enemy of the state would behave in such a manner.
what the heck does the aclu have to do with the prisoners at gitmo?  I say if it works, continue to do it.  Obama has now made our country weaker.  When we are attacked again, on our soil, maybe the people who voted for him will see him as he really is.
These photos should be printed right next to pictures of Daniel Pearle being beheaded and pictures of our service mens bodies being dragged the the streets after being burned. You lilly livered you know whats need to wake up. We don't do real torture. My God quit slamming the United States and thank God you live here not some third world country.
While I do find it sad that Americans were forced to deploy tactics of such a nature, I also realize the need for information in a timely fashion. To date the intelligence community has done a fair job of stopping another 9/11 type of attack, and to be honest I don’t care how they got the information, I’m just damn glad they did.

I must also acknowledge the fact that the young soldiers that may have acted outside the permissible range of tactics were under tremendous pressure, to get any and all information. These young men and women were doing what they could to protect American lives. Dailey they have to read about attacks that injure or kill other young American soldiers and wonder if there was some thread of information they might have obtained.

Let us not forget that this is a media generation of young people, we feed them a constant diet of good guys doing questionable things for the good of humanity.  The most current of which might be the character “ Jack Bauer “ on the top rated show “24”, this is a man that will do what ever it takes to get the job done, and Americans love it. While some may argue that these TV and Movie characters are make believe and should be thought of as such, I think they perhaps have the same impact on this generation as perhaps “John Wayne” might have had on their parent’s generation.

As for my own belief, if lives were at stake, I’d go medieval on their ---.

Someone please tell the Anti Civil Liberties Union that thier focus is supposed to be "protecting" Americans... not Terrorists. Re-read the entire front section of any newspaper from September 12, 2001! I support torture of even the lowest level terrorist, and waterboarding is not torture.. it's annoying at best. If ripping the fingernails out of 100 terrorists saves the life of even 1 liberal American I'm for it!!! As a Republican I was never much of a fan of Dick Cheney but he is absolutely correct. You cannot just release 1 side of a story unless you clearly have an ideology and an agenda! 5 current and former CIA chiefs including Paneta(Obama appointee) and Tenet(Clinton appointee) all agreed that releasing these documents was bad. I am a US Army soldier and a veteran of Iraq. Some things should transcend politics and this should be one of them! Pleae put differences aside and realize that the safety of soldiers over seas are effected by the release of these documents. And being afraid to use torture (I won't insult anyone and use the phrase "enhanced interrogation") to save the lives of Americans, even liberals, should be supported by any American who remembers 9/11!!!
why is N.B.C> doing all this trash. Do youall hate the american  people so much.  Bush is gone now print some of the good he did. Getting tired of all the bad that comes out of your network
if these photos are releaased im sure it would bring nothing but trouble in different countries to who this may offend and besides these are not pictures that we should in joy just by looking , i would  say keep them private or classified and release them in the future when permitted not a good time now.
Reagan had a vision we are the City on a Hill.
Yea, Boot Hill.
George Washington introduced torture punishment in West point Military Acadamy and they all left and no recruits signed up. A letter of apology is on exibit in the West Point Museum. Then the Cadets came back. One torture was to put your foot on a spike all day until the pain was unbarable in the hot sun. The white Man took the scalp of the Indian first to frighten him from entering a happy hunting ground when he would die. The belief of an indian was you cannot go to Heaven without your hair. Fear tactic. This is also in the west Point Museum. When will we ever learn All the western movies tell us only indians took scalps. No it was us we did it first. If we torture we get tortured. Cheney and co are sorry they were caught not sorry for what they did.
Why is the "AMERICAN" "CIVIL" Liberties Union defending Terrorists???????!!!!!!!  If they are "Americans" then they are TRAITORS and do not deserve the same priveledges.Even when a citizen is convicted of a felony, some of his PRIVLIDGES are taken away and justly so. It is the price you pay for the freedom to be a criminal if you so choose!!!! It is a great PRIVILEDGE to be a citizen of this country. That should be respected. Maybe a clearer line should be drawn again between RIGHTS and PRIVILEDGES. I think that this is undermining America's self respect as a nation and  our ability to fight such "unseen" malevolant forces. How does it make us look to the rest of the world? But more important how do our ENEMIES percieve us? They love it! Maybe we should use some stimulus credit and buy them a nice house to use for there sleeper cells!!!! Is there some conspiracy to bring our nation to civil unrest or even a civil war???? God Help Us !!!!
I'm curious if anyone would take on General McCaffrey's reaction on NBC to the release of the torture memos?

McCaffrey, a highly decorated four star general, describes US actions as in some cases "torture" and "probably murder".  He supports investigation of those who authorized these measures and is open to their prosecution (though, like Obama, he opposes prosecution of interrogators who acting on the basis of OLC opinions).  He made these comments on NBC (with Norah O'Donnell).
Are you kidding me? The American Civil LIberties Union has filed siut? What the hell does the A in ACLU stand for? These are prisoners of WAR!What aload of crap. The ACLU will file suit over anything apparantly. They have no business in this arena. What a bunch of hogwash. Are they going to file suit on bhalf of the TERRORISTS who were waterboarded. Ahhhhhh!!
What's wrong with America? The ACLU is defending the people who are trying to kill us.
The Obama administration is doing this now to keep the focus off of all the wrong that he is doing in office --- ruining our country, and making the US a country of socialism.
Obama and the liberal left is doing what 40 years of Soviet communism failed to do - unravel the fabric of this country by weakening every institution that made it great and weakening America in the eye of every two-bit wannabe in the world.
ONCE AGAIN, THE ACLU AND OUR SPINLESS JUDGES HAVE YIELDED TO OUR ENEMIES NEEDS. WE HACE BECOME SELF DESTRUCTIVE AND THE ACLU HAS BECOME AS DAMAGING AS ANY TERRORIST GROUP WE FACE. We are at war in case you forget. Please don't wrap yourself in self rightoeous tripe about how we don't do torture. i saw torture in the Nam...waterboarding is not torture
The media refuses to show images of 9-11 so as not to promote anger,   but they will show this?   What a slap in the face of our military.   Sometimes  I wonder how American the media really is.
I'm far more concerned about damage done to the US by the ACLU than I am about abuse to prisoners.  I myself served in Vietnam and it is totally unrealistic to expect there to never be any abuse in war or prison situations.  Is it right, no.  Does it happen under the heat of the moment, yes.  Getting back to my initial statement, the ACLU has done more damage to the US than our military or prison officials could ever hope to do.  I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times they have done anything that I would agree with.  In my opinion they're the true "enemy within".
You won't print this, I know. because you have an agenda. I am going to say it anyway. They killed more than 3,000 people on 9/11. They are terrorists. We are at war. I do not understand why the Obama administration seems so bent on making these criminals into martyrs.
OK then, by the same token, let's release all of the photos we have about abuse (torture) from terrorists and extremists, inflicted on Americans and other nationalities, including their own citizens.
Seems like our government has declared war on USA
Please do not give away all our secrets -- they are also our strategies to keep us safe.
I'm sure these photos will show conclusively that these methods resulted in a "treasure trove" of information.  Youbet'cha!
Jim I'm a Military Mom and all the information about how the US has been kidnapping people transporting then and torturing them as been known for so many years it seems only the US wasn't told. As you have already heard Law Makers and some Americans are in denial as the pictures wont make a differnce. We were once the leader of Human Rights, no longer. Soldiers often talked about how detainees were torture, but my shocker was we tortured kids.  How sick is that. Just think the US sentenced Japanese soldiers to 15 years in jail for torturing US POW's now we are Torturing men/woman/children and justifying it. Many detainees have been tortured to death, at lease 7 were tortured so much their now medically insane.  President Bush said many times the US doesn't torture he out right lied. Cheney was so proud of Torture he clearly admitted it on Fox News and said he's do it again. We waterboarded Mahommad 183 times and yes we got information as he confussed to killed Abe Lincoln and John Kennedy. The information Dick Cheney is claiming saved our lives was that information Bill Clinton annouced long before Bush took office. China had reported how two Chinese men were captured and tortured by the US which had nothing to do with al qeada but were question about information in China. Look the smoke and mirrors set up by the Bush Administration was clearly more then terrorist. What's sad is all this was happening right under the noses of the American people who had no one giving truthful information. No more Journalist like Edward R. Murrow who put the public interest first. Now everyone is acting like all this is new when it's really old news. Many countries are waiting to see how the US Justice System will work. Will we allow these crimes to go unpunished? Unlike Nixon who's crimes were against the American people, the Bush Administration's crimes are against citizens of other countries. Many countries are getting ready to try those in the Bush Administration.  The young soldiers who were sentenced to jail for following orders from the top. I guess this is what Americans mean when they say We Support Our Troops. President Obama has reversed the Torture Policy for the USA. But he can't change the pass 8 years and in the future a new group of terrorist will use the Bush Torture Policy and maybe even on US Soldiers and American citizens. What will the US say then? As we were against Torture in the pass, for 8 years Torture was ok and now as of Jan. 20,2009 Torture is illegal.  It's the 8 year Crime Torture spree that future terrorist will use to defend that actions. This is a clear example of by the US is ranked so low in education, morals, values and saddly even Religion. When we look in the mirror we look no different then the enemy.
i dont see a problem, at least they were not beheading prisoners, or putting them on tv then executing them for America to see.
You know Jim, that's mighty nice of Com. David Patraeus to order all 2,000 photos to be released to keep from 'dragging this issue out forever.'
I understand that there is a chain of command in the military and the environment of working in a prison is no picnic. My brother has been deployed five times in various places over the last eighteen yrs. It isn't easy for our family to have him retuning to Iraq for a second time. And it isn't easy for any soldier, so I'm not being naive.
As for me, I worked in a state prison for eleven yrs. I was a correctional officer. I wasn't there to punish anyone. But this was the mentality of some supervisors. They tried to drive their subordinates crazy, along with the inmates. One supervisor put a muslim inmate who wasn't causing any problems at all,in a holding cell and had him sing Christmas songs before the inmate was allowed to return to his cell.
This may sound funny to some. But I'm proving a point, power corrupts in that kind of envirnonment. And it's up to the higher ups to maintain civility.
It's sad at this point that the ACLU has to put things into proper perspctive, rather than our militaary leaders. Other countries have always looked at us to set an example. And we've always set high standards for ourselves, which as it should be.
I'm so glad that in this country we do have the ACLU and we are accountable for our actions.

Thanks to you also, and your great reporting.

Vicki
Thanks ACLU!  Here comes another Abu Ghraib scandal, which means more ticked off Iraqi and Afghani citizens, which means more dead U.S. service members.  From the descriptions of the photos listed above I agree that that actions in the photographs are wrong (and should never have been photographed in the first place), but why show them to the entire world?  Generate more anger towards the U.S. perhaps?  Releasing these photos will ultimately cause more harm than good.  I hope they understand that.
THIS IS WONDERFUL NEWS.  NOW WE CAN BEGIN TO HEAL.

WE ALL ARE ACCOUNTABLE FOR OUR OWN ACTIONS.  FREEDOM OF THE PRESS; WITH REAL FREEDOM, NOW THOSE ACTIONS CAN BE OBSERVED, JUDGED AND EVALUATED.
Why is this issue so important? Why now?  Why does the predsident say at one time this will not be pursued, than the next day release memos, now pictures, etc.  What is the hidden agenda?

I ask, so what if we tortured these terrorist?  How many lives have we saved in the process?  If it means that we have to abuse an individual with waterboarding to save 5,000 lives, well that individual is lucky that he will only recieve the method of waterboarding.

We are at war people, with an element that has no respect for life, look how brutal the terrorist were when they beheaded the reporter Daniel Pearl with a knife, or how they tortured and mutilated the four American civilian contractors in Irag and hung their burned mutilated bodies from a bridge on the Eurphrates and remember 9/11 (5,000).

Americans have become soft: this is not a war where we can win the minds and sing happy songs, nor a time where we can negiote with the enemy.  This is not a war where you raise a white flag and meet in the middle of the battlefield to discuss surrender.  Wake up, this is about civilization, the protection of our Western cultural that the terrorist wish to destroy and erase from the world.  IF we fail to match the enemy and defeat them, it will be too late.

You people that decry the methods of extracting information to save lives from terrorist have no clue, you are dillusional about what it takes protect and secure a peaceful and prosperous nation.
Wake up folks a crime was committed sticking our heads in the sand wont change the truth. Now I respect those who feel the US should be able to kidnap and torture people and no one should be charged because in the US it's not really a crime to torture the enemy.  As my daughter served in both Afghanistan and Iraq I have first hand knowledge of the facts. And yes she had to have a councilor because of the horror. Americans might feel it's no problem with Torture, but let's see what's said when the Bush Torture Policy is used by others aganist US Soldiers and American citizens. Most of the Law Makers and out spoken people never served in the US Military. Just be glad their not showing the photo's of the children Bush had tortured. The truth hurts but we have to deal with it now.

We have to remember Dick Cheney leaked CIA Covert Agent Plame's name as she was working in Iran. President Obama understands CIA agents were ordered to torture by the Bush Administration. We have right now several US soldiers in jail for following the orders of the Bush Administration who lied and said " We don't Torture".
We don't have a free pass to torture anybody just because we are the U.S.  If anybody thinks that releasing these photos is a bad idea, It should not have been done in the first place.  Our reputation was damaged by us when we stopped doing the right thing & allowed Bush to think for us.  I love my country and sometimes the right thing to do isn't always the most comfortable/easy thing to do.
ACLU = anti: christian, anti: liberty(freedom), anti:U.S... Of course they'll sue anybody, any time, anywhere; they are LAWYERS, lawyers make Money by sueing and going to court where judges(lawyers) put up with their BS.  I wonder how many ACLU lawyers are combat veterans?
"Why just to give our military an even worse name. Those judging the military, are to afraid to join or have drug issues, felones and rapist."

"This statement is so funny...All the felones and the rapist are in your military. Thats all you freak take in. Any soldiers that can RAPE or even abuse children to get info. Those soldiers should be killed on site. And any C.O that can give orders to rape and kill children should also be killed on the spot. A few bad apples? O.K lets go there. Bush and Cheney, Giuliani, Rumsfeld as will as Condeleeza Rice and Karl Rove. You can put Colin Powell into this small group of terrorist. They have ordered the killing and ordered the rape and torture of children and women. They are the one's that are the true terrorist. They tortured, They order the rape of child soldiers. You American's are nothing but racist and out and out cowards. No remorse for any of your war-crimes, No remorse for  your brutal and stupid war on terror. If you freaks can dish it out then i hope that you can take it also. 9/11 was an inside job and the WHOLE world knows this but you racist low lifes. Your so corrupt and disgraceful as will as disillusional and gullible it really is so funny when you try to scam the rest of the world to believe your crap...You folks are the biggest joke of earth...I hope and pray that you American terrorist burn in hell were you all belong. Plus please stop your whinning on 9/11 and go get the real criminals that killed your people as will as alot of other counties folks. Those criminals names are: Bush,Cheney,Giuliani,Rumsfeld,Rice,Rove,Powell. You can also put in the Bilderberg Group in this list of war-criminals. They are the money and you are the thugs that do their dirty work. So stop whinning because your coming very close to becoming an emotional retard. Stop criticizing others for their mistakes. Why not try and clean up your own act before whinning about someone elses. Your two face and your NO friend of anyone's. So i will take Russia and China as will as Germany and anyother counties side that are againist you American terrorist. So if World War 3 does happen. I am not on your side. You are the true terrorist. So i hope you burn like one. Have a great day folks and i hope that you americans have a BAD day. Stop your abuse then maybe folks from alround the world will stop theirs. But you folks are to stupid to understand that. Traitors!!!
27 yrs. Army, 2 yrs. Vietnam, I had thought I had seen the last of non-supporting Americans to the military, guess I was wrong, they are still in office running down the country, with ACLU help. Now I'm called a "Right Wing Terrorist" for serving my country. Give me a break.
When the photos are released, Al Quaeda will have new tools to recruit soldiers to fight the great Satan. There is no reason to grant this request today.  Can no one point in the administration point this out and "lose" these photos for a few decades?
what's wrong with you all?  you don't care that your country's leaders condone torture?  ya, you are so worried about "our enemies"--well, they will get theirs!  but what about "ours"?--don't ya think our torturers should meet justice too?  or, are we, as americans, just too good to be held to the same standard (war crimes!) as the rest of the world??
What is wrong with the new administration???!!!! Did they forget about 9/11, Nicholas Berg or Daniel Pearl!!!!!!!!! Those were very extreme forms of torture. We as a nation have become so soft, why don't we invite Bin Laden to dinner and beg him to stop his attacks. Stiffen up America, the terrorist are no different than the Nazis, just look at what is happening in Pakistan. The Taliban want to enforce sharia law world wide. Wake up and smell the extremism all around us.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH ALL OF YOU IDIOTS?  The US does not torture prisoners.  We are not an eye for an eye society like those barbarians we are fighting, or are we?  I'm starting to think that a little Bush rubbed off on you guys.  We are supposed to be the shining beacon of light in the world.  We are part of the Geneva Convention and those who use barbarian tactics should be punished.  GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF YOUR BUTTS!!!  WE ARE AMERICANS...Start acting like it.  This kind of revenge, vigilante justice attitude is part of the reason the world hates us right now.  GET OVER YOURSELVES!!!
Obama has just returned from an extensive International Tour, where he humbled himself before Foreign Leaders in an attempt to help America's image.

Although many have criticized him for the bowing and apologizing; it could not have been an easy thing to do. But he just grinned and beared it.

And his reward ?

The ACLU demands hundreds, or thousands of new photos of Arab Prisoners. What jerks !

All the effort our President just made on our behalf will be more than nullified. Whether you like Obama or not, he did try. And his job just became much harder.

People like the ACLU, and the fools in Hollywood are not helping America, and they're not helping Obama. You're making his job impossible.

You're making us all less safe, and you're going to get us all killed. You know who you are.
All day long and by the days and weeks.....
I set and watch the talked about the Bush administration
handling the terrorist attack that was make on USA and the handling of the torture on the prisoner of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba......... and by the Bush administration.
That was done in the past. We American and the men that is doing the job of protected our country should not be treated this way.
they take there orders and carry them out as they are told to do. They shouldn't be punished for trying to kept out country from danger.
I believe in what our country represented and how that treated the enemy that goes against us in war.
What I hear on TV, It isn't as bad as if we were the enemy or prisoner ... they would beheaded us or shoot in a firing range.
look in Iraq wht they done to our men and women.
other country wouldn't be as nice as we are . so what i hear from waterboard and setting in a box  etc  !
Isn't as bad what they would do to our Military men and women.
Just leave former President alone he done what would had to be done for the sake of our country.
don't keep bad mouthing our former president. This look bad  for our country. they see our way of punishment or tortured to prisoner is like handle out candy to the terriost & prisoner.
FREEDOM COMES WITH A HIGH PRICE TAG. I FEEL WE SHOULD TAKE ANY MEANS NECESSARY TO PREVENT ANOTHER TERRORIST ATTACK. EVEN IF THAT MEANS A FEW PEOPLE GET HARMED. EVERYBODY WANTS THE FREEDOM AND SECURITY THAT THE USA IS ACCUSTOMED TO BUT DONT UNDERSTAND THAT WE MUST SACRIFCE CERTAIN MORALS TO OBTAIN OR SECURITY.
These photos will help recruit more for the extremists who hate the U.S. Any chance the ACLU will reach out to those potential extremist recruits and ensure they see the videos of people screaming in pain as their heads are being cut off of their bodies - sinew by vein by muscle by nerve by bone... until they take a last gurgling breath? Well, thanks to what ACLU has just accomplished we'll be seeing more of THESE atrocities as extremists become more angry and emboldened. You've messed up royally - Obama, ACLU and anyone else involved. We are in the middle of a war - WAKE UP and stop aiding the cause of the extremists.
