Back in New York: New music, and the NYT

My thanks to Ann Curry for allowing me to travel back from London and rid myself of much of the jet lag from our week's trip. Back in New York today, where the following got my attention:

Correction of the day

This is a verbatim quote from today's New York Times corrections: "The Basics column on Tuesday about using quantitative reasoning to find an approximate answer to complex problems, misstated the number of utilities in a game of Monopoly. It is two, not four." Brilliant. Bravo.

New music of the day

While overwrought music writing always sounds like overwrought wine reviews, ("a hint of plum and accents of oak, with a woody finish...") the song "Kingdom of Rust" by the Doves is interesting for the influences that you can hear on just one listen: the Moody Blues, The Edge, the E-Street Band (keyboard and glockenspiel, for starters) not to mention the Chris Martin-esque vocals.  In the mellow category, another nice new one is "Everything Is Moving So Fast" by the Great Lakes Swimmers...their song "Palmistry" is also good. And longtime Leonard Cohen fans and followers may be surprised at the banter and humor on his new live recording.  I was. Especially strong are "The Future" and "Tower of Song." And it’s been a while, so it deserves another mention: the great song "Dirty Dishes" by the Rhode Island bar band called Deer Tick. I've received a few emails from fellow fans...I notice they are getting a bit more traction. The new single by the 17-year-old Australian phenom Gabriella Cilmi "Sweet About Me" is hooky and great, and for something heavier, try "To Lose My Life" by White Lies...a couple of Brits who sound a lot like Interpol. And that's today in music.

Back to our day jobs: tragedy in Italy, three awful shootings in three days here in the U.S. The President continues overseas, and we'll end the broadcast with a Making A Difference report tonight. We're glad to be back at home base, and we hope you'll join us.

Congratulations, Brian on winning the Walter Cronkite award-----well deserved, and I am sure a thrill, as I know you have often spoke of growing up not being able to have dinner at your house until Walter Cronkite's newscast was over.  All your fans are proud of you!
Brian it's early how here in Calie but reading your post I think you need a few more days of rest as the Brits got to you. Yes your right about Apple's Father Chris Martin but to much information my friend.

Ok now to business. Looking over the web I notice good old Bin Laden's name is popping up again. It made me think of 9/11 when I was back east. I saw what happen and listen to the only real tape response from Osama. One he said he was proud but he couldn't take credit. Next he said Americans would fine out what was really going on. That has always stuck with me for some reason. Now little by little it's seems he knew something we didn't know. 2000 our country had friends around the World and even a Budget surplus. Life was good. 8 years later look at the mess we're in and still lies and spin are going on. Even the GOP is black mailing the President's appointees if he releases Bush/Cheney memos they will block Justice appointees. Something is clearly worng here. One Law Makers said Obama's appointees are taking a big drop in salaries so they should stay in the private sector. Now what's really going on. We watched for 8 years some of the dumbest appointees by Bush with no questions asked. Some even lied under oath while at hearings. Why not appointed qualified people?

I heard Obama's speech to Turkey and I even questioned his statement. America doen't hate Muslim. Well that knocked me over as for 8 years that's all the Bush Administration as said and even called some countries Axis of Evil. Yes we painted all Muslim with one brush because of a few. Even today some TV Host, Law Makers and articles in the Press continue the hate calls. One might have asked President Obama where's the love and respect for him in the United States?  Presient Obama has his work cut out for him in repairing the damage not only done to the World but to the United States too.

I feel bad for the people of South Carolina as they Govenor will surely put the citizens in the poor house. He will wait until the bottom falls out before giving his citizens the help they need. Just this it's their money he's denying them, because he wants to use it to balance his budget. The citizens elected Stanford and they can recall if they choose to.

Paul Krugman who marched attacks on Geithner and Obama as he said their plan would fail at the G-20. Yes he knew more then them because he won a Nobel Prize for Economics and Obama didn't pick him as the US Treasury Secretary. So he wanted us to know he knew more then Geithner. Well let's say he had to eat crow as yes he was totally wrong. Sometimes people think their more then they are at least Krugman did. We have many knowledgable people in the US.

See you same time same place
Brian, do you have the Sam Roberts Band on your iPod? Download Detroit '67 (and check out the video).
Brian-

Congratulations on the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism. They got it right--you are an excellent journalist! Bravo!

BTW--I once saw a wine described as having hints of "pencil shavings". It was a fancy place, an expensive wine and they were using the description to extoll the wine! I kid you not! Would you buy it? Our entire group got a huge laugh out of it.

Take care and welcome back---
I've been so saddened by all of the horrible news heard over this weekend, and I'm sorry you had to return to home to all of it. Despite all of it, I really hope you had a good weekend with your family. We're happy to have you back home.

All of my thoughts and prayers go out to the victums and families of the tragic events occuring over the weekend in the state of New York, and in the state of Washington. I just don't know what to say about all of this. It seems, from what we're heHas America become numb to tragedy?aring, the economic dive has been having a profoundly tragic effect on people, but I still can't begin to comprehend how someone can do something like this. I guess that last part of that sentence is what keeps most of us human, not being able to understand something like this.

After staying up Saturday night reading "Tweets" from Ann Curry about North Korea (who has actually started following my brother and I, after we tried helping with her spam), I found it very hard to sleep, and waking up to the news Sunday morning wasn't the greatest idea. Especially after reading a particular article on MSNBC.com (which was also featured in our local paper), titled "Has America become numb to tragedy?". I somewhat agreed with a few of it's points, but it really upset me. I know horrible things are happening left and right, but I can't agree that we are becoming "numb" to tragety. I have to be an optimist, and keep the strong faith I have in our country.

Now, onto music:
Thank you for mentioning "a few emails from fellow fans" of Deer Tick, it tells me you got my message! I wouldn't be a fan unless you had told us about them, thanks again! I needed a new listen. They were so psyched to hear you say "Deer Tick", and "Dirty Dishes"! Thank you for sharing with us you "New Music of the Day". Your description of the Doves' song "Kingdom of Rust" couldn't get any better! I love all of those mentioned in the description. The Moody Blues "Nights in White Satin", is my favorite of theirs. All the rest in the mention is just perfect, wonderful song! I will check out all the rest tonight.

Thank you for your blog today, it was nice and uplifting. I have a few good stories to share later on, which I suppose I'll post after the broadcast. Small, but big, acts of random kindness! Just another thing that brightened up my weekend (+ getting up to Mill Mountain on a beautiful day)

Have a great evening!
Take Care,
-Cary

P.S. As I read now from fellow viewers, congratulations on your Walter Cronkite Award! Wow, that's wonderful!

P.S. As read by fellow viewers, congratulations on your Walter Cronkite Award! What an honour that is!

P.S.S. I'm reposting this, because there was a huge typo in the original post. Hope you catch that...
Staff Sgt. Meyers' family has my deepest condolences and prayers at this time of loss.  I am, however, grateful for his family who allowed us to see this.

Watching the polar bears running over broken ice breaks my heart.  Who explains environmental problems with them?

New wealth is nice for the future, but we need a lifeline now.  I loved today's Making a Difference.  Thanks to Lee Cowen for being it to us!

Pardon me... *yawn* baseball again?  The only thing good about baseball is that it means spring is officially moving forward!

Happy Monday to everyone!
This isn't about helping others in the economy, but I want you to know about a lady whose little girl has a rare form of cancer.  In her treatment room there was her large supportive family but when the mother walked down the hall she saw in the next room a little boy having the same treatment, only his room was dark & he was alone, hugging toy bears & watching cartoons. The mother found that he was a ward & had no family.  So she adopted him, & now he is part of a large, happy, cheerful & still growing family! [story in the St Paul Pioneer Press of April 6.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Welcome Back! Great to have you back here in New York safe and sound! A fine broadcast this evening! CONRATULATIONS MR.WILLIAMS ON WINNING THE WALTER CRONKITE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM!! VERY TRULY DESERVING!! You do AWESOME work!! Now on to the broadcast. First of all the report by Mr.Todd concerning President Obama's visit to Turkey really showed how President Obama is reaching out to the Muslim world to improve relations with these regions towards a path to peace. Seeing the Presdent meet with Parliament and speak about uniting against other nations about nuclear ambitions is certainly a positive note and hopefully will create less chaotic situations for the civilians of these regions and a more peaceful environment. Time will tell.
On another note the report by Stephanie Gosk from L'Aquila,Italy hit by the 6.3 earthquake showed some awful destruction left by the quake. It is terrible to hear some towns are cut off which could make it harder for rescuers to reach them. And seeing some very old buildings destroyed is tragic. I hope everyone is able to get rescued.

Seeing the ceremony at Dover Air Force Base of the return of fallen soldier Phillip Myers bring tears. He fought so bravely and with such dedication to his country it is a honorable tribute to him. Very deserving of the Bronze Star. So very tragic to lose a fallen soldier. We salute him proudly with honor and dignity. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Nice seeing the start of baseball season and all the first pitches being thrown. Play Ball!

The "Making A Difference" segment by Mr.Cowan from Lancaster,California showed how the town just decided to help itself without waiting for the government and produced great results. Creating all the new jobs and helping the businesses with the coupons. Great ideas to help the city's economy. Good Piece!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams! Again, Congratulations on the Cronkite Award! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra Safe And Well Richard!
XOXO
I nominate this entry from yesterday's Times Magazine for correction of the week:

The crossword on March 22 gave an erroneous clue for 57-Across, “Showcase Showdown Prize, Perhaps?” — for which the solution was “dinette set.” Such a prize could be awarded only during the “Showcase” portion of “The Price Is Right.” The “Showcase Showdown” is a preliminary round.

Thank you for another great broadcast this Monday night, Brian. I had meant to mention earlier the horrible earthquake in Italy, my heart goes out to them. The ban to air footage of US Troops returning home, lifted by President Obama, I think for the most part is best. Though I do always seem to see two sides of things, in the end it all matters what the families of these soldiers feel about it. I hope it's for the best.

I felt bad for President Obama flinching, as shown on the broadcast tonight. I can imagine how he must have felt, being somewhere he knew he wasn't completely safe. It reminded me of the firecrackers that made Bobby Kennedy flinch as he rode through China Town embracing his supporters. Of course for Bobby, it was obvious why he would flinch at the time.

As my Brother, Nana and I were sitting on a bench on Mill Mountain, a couple and their baby boxer walked by and gave a friendly smile. As they continued up the hill I noticed the man (wearing a USMC T-shirt) hand his wife the leach and started jogging up the hill. I looked over and wondered "Why is he running?", and then saw him pushing a man in a wheel chair up a crossing hill because the man's wife was having trouble getting her husband up the hill on her own. It was a small, but meaningful thing I glimpsed over to witness that has stuck in my head ever since I saw it. It made my day, just knowing that there are those out there who will jump into whatever they see to help a fellow human-being, no matter how big or small that deed is.

Because I'm not the original writer of this story, I felt I should send the link in, as apposed to rewriting it in my own words: http://www.roanoke.com/community/virginia/column/wb/199081

I love the band Great Lake Swimmers you recommened for us. I'm a huge fan of "mellow" music, epecially if they're a great band! A musician friend of mine, who I met when my (ex)stepdad had a band a few years ago now, told me of Ray LaMontagne. I've become a huge fan since, and would strongly recommend him to anyone. You've most likely already heard of him since he's appeared on Saturday Night Live now. All of his albums are great, I'd have a hard time picking just a few songs...

Have a good night, Brian.
-Cary

Mr.Williams,
Congratulations on your well deserved award. And thanks for the music review!
Bill Kelly
Brian, congrats on the Walter Cronkite Award! What a great honor to add to all the others you have received.

Speaking of other great journalists, along with Cary, I was up reading Ann Curry's tweets about the North Korean missile launch. Now there is a woman who keeps her reporter hat on at all hours! I appreciated the real time news updates. I've said it before and I'll say it again, social networking is an amazing tool for getting instant news, no matter where you are. -I was reading the updates with my BlackBerry while juggling the baby. -Not literally juggling the baby. I'm not THAT good at multitasking.  ;-)

I have two college degrees, but I still had to read that NYT correction a couple of times to fully process what it said.  -My husband will say it's because I'm an alum of the University of Cincinnati (a rival to his supposedly superior alma mater), or I could chalk it up to motherhood turning my brain to mush.  More likely, someone went a little overboard with their correction there. What a great example of overstating something simple.

Stephanie, you so wouldn't want to live at my house! Even before (the supposedly superior - see above) Xavier University gets knocked out of the NCAA tourney, my husband starts counting down the weeks and days to spring training, and then to opening day, which is a major holiday in this area.  Then, it's all baseball all the time. Good thing I like baseball!

~Hello to everyone else as always.
And lnp, we know that wasn't you who posted the snarky comment on Thursday. No worries!

It was cool to hear you like Great Lake Swimmers. I thought I was the only one. And Leonard Cohen is one of the best of all time. I didn't know you were into so much new music.Keep up the good work with your newscast.
Brian-
plainly speaking (cuz I don't need any bombast language for this) - you are awesome. Truly charismatic and absolute embodiment of what a journalist should be. An inspiration- so human and accessible. Keep being hopeful and spreading ur good will (it's contagious)
Congrats. But please explain what you mean in your NBC promo spot when you say, "We live in extraordinary times.  Our nation's in crisis.  And yet there's that uniquely American feeling of hope." Do you really mean that people of other nations have no hope? Were you aware of what you were saying? It offends me every time I hear it.
Hi Brian:
So glad you are back.  Congratulations on winning the Walter Cronkite Award For excellence in Journalism.  No one deserves it more than you.  You are an awesome and excellent journalist.

Sorry that after a wonderful trip you had to come back to so much sad news here at home.  Hope you had a chance to unwind and enjoy some time with your family this weekend.  Unfortunately, the news is still sad.  Here in Northern California (Bay Area) we are now having to deal with the sad news of finding the body of the 8 year old girl here in Tracy who had been missing for awhile.  The only good thing is that tonight on your "Making A Difference" segment I am sure that what the people of Lancaster, California have done is making peoples hearts feel a little better.  Again all it takes is people joining together to make a difference for so many in need.  It was a great story.

I think President Obama's trip was a great success.  I truly believe he has strengthened our relations with all nations and how the world looks at us.

Seeing the return of Phillip Meyers body back home was very touching.  It reminds us of the huge sacrifice these men and women make everyday for us.  Our prayers are with his family.

Again, glad to hear your voice back on the nightly news.
I echo Andrea's comment.  The Cronkite Award is a well deserved honor.  I was an ABC junkie but found that NBC and, in particular, your newscasts, more informative.

Congratulations.  I hope that Walter himself can be there to present the award to you himself.
Brian,
Glad to hear you finally got some rest!Congratulations on a very well deserved award,I know you must be thrilled.Looking forward to hearing all about it soon.
Hi Brian:
Glad you like Doves music.....
Love the coverage of Making of Difference, it's touching in these times......... (besides those news makes ppl sick of those Mass Killing,,, but it's surely understands why it happens),,
anyway...
Did you hear their first album from Doves, the Lost Souls?
What music did you get from UK as well?

THanks for your coverage of news and keep it up..
:>
Doves sound a little too much like Coldplay for my taste. It's good music don't get me wrong just nothing groundbreaking. I see we share a love for Deer Tick. Check out Blitzen Trapper if you like them. Also if you don't have any Tallest Man on Earth I highly suggest this Norwegian early Dylan-esque folk singer as well.
Hey Brian,

Where's a blog where you fawn all over Obama?

I used to watch your news program every evening (since its inception), but the constant Obama-praising in which you've chosen to engage yourself began to eat away at my trust in you as an objective news journalist. I now watch ABC. Too bad. I really liked you.

PS: No, I'm not Republican. Nope, not Democrat, either.
