Running from trouble

It was an impulse buy. A few minutes too many at Reagan National, and I drifted into the airport equivalent of a mini-mart. Determined to resist the call of Reese's, I opted for Runner's World magazine instead. It's there I read about the young woman you'll meet in tonight's Making a Difference report.

It started as a small gesture between strangers. A simple wave. The guys at the shelter were curious about the petite blond who ran past each day before dawn. This was one of those so-called transitional neighborhoods. She was tiny and alone and they worried about her. In the days to follow they would call out warnings, 'be careful' and 'stay safe.' She'd smile and nod and continue on.

It's a day that changed her life and, in the time since, has changed hundreds of others. Her decision has even saved a few lives, like that of James Singletary -- a man who thought he lost it all until he found Anne and the group she founded, Back on My Feet.

Anne jumped off the pages of the magazine. I had to meet her. Tonight, you will, too.

This story was truly touching, and brought me to tears. I only wish and hope more people will reach out as Anne did and treat people with such kindness.
With all the depressing news today this story was such a nice way to end the day.  Hope, inspiration and the power we all have to make the world a better place with this story.  Loved it!
When the story began I thought,"Just another story about...". Until it unfolded and I realized there was more to it than I thought. How inspiring, fortunate and courageous of this young woman to take on a project such as this. And to have it spread to other areas is even more inspirational. To her I say thank you for everything you do.
How can I get a copy of April 3 night news about Back on your feet?
Just an amazing story. Right on for making it. It has inspired me to better myself. Right on to Anne Mahlum and the fact that one person can make a difference in people lives. Thank you NBC for running this story.
Nice job on this story Janet. I'm Anne's mom back here in ND.  I never get tried of my daughter's story--she is truly an inspiration and my heart swells with pride every time I hear her story told.
You guys keep running and continue to be blessed.  We need to hear of true compassionate people.  I will continue to pray for all of you.
I'm glad you gave this wonderful woman more attention. She was a "CNN Hero" last year and a finalist for "Hero of the Year."
This is the second time I heard about this girl, This is what true love is. Anne is truly Blessed .
When my brother Jose told me he was running with a group I thought "Good for him", he didn't really go into details about it.  When the story came on the news I really was overhelmed with his progress and ability to want to change. "Back on my feet" has given him something to live for and I can trully say I'm proud of him, he has been through alot and God has a great plan for him and those men who continue to run for a change!
This story with no doubt is my favorite from NBCs' Making a difference. Great job NBC News!! Continue to air more stories like these.

Anne,
You have been a blessing for those who were down and the Lord has used to bring them up. Continue to do God's Work.
