Back to Earth: Shuttle touches down safely

I just finished anchoring coverage of the space shuttle Discovery's successful landing at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. No matter how many times I cover andings and launches, I still find myself in awe, and even a little anxious. We keep hearing that the space shuttle concept is outdated technology, yet the idea of a "space plane," still seems cutting edge. There are fewer than ten shuttle missions planned before the fleet is retired for good. Despite the early promises that the shuttle would someday make space flight routine, the ungainly spacecraft will end its run as it began – as a technological marvel.

Now it's back to work for tonight's Nightly News broadcast. Our big story this evening is a possible victory in the fight against the rising waters of North Dakota's Red River. At this writing it appears the river has reached its highest point, and that the sandbag levees are holding. This story is obviously still developing, and we'll have live updates from the scene on the program tonight.

Hi, Lester!

You're absolutely right about the space shuttle. Even though the technology of the Space Shuttle is aging and updating, the fact that we can even get up into space is still mind-blowing to me. Great point made there! I'm looking forward to seeing this tonight.

It's great to hear that the sandbag levees, created by all of these amazing people with so much good in their heart, are appearing to work. I've been thinking about this over the weekend since we heard that this weekend could worsen the flood, also it's hard not to think of it as it is raining here. Of course, as I've been telling people, I'm certainly not complaining.

See you soon,
Have a great evening.

Lester, lots of us join you in your awe watching launches and landings. It's one of the things we like about you...you're not jaded when many are. Always nice to see you.
Good Evening Mr.Holt, A fine abbreviated broadcast this evening. I watched the video of the Space Shuttle Discovery landing and it looked great coming into Kennedy Space Center. Now on to the broadcast. The report by Mr.Tibbles from Fargo,ND showed how all the residents are just holding their breath as the Red River reaches record flood stages. At least it hasn't reached the 43ft that was predicted and hearing it receded by a few inches was a little good news. The temperatures keeping below freezing prevents any extra melting and flow by the water, but I hope that more storms and wind do not cause more rising of water. Seeing the people looking at their home across the river and not knowing what the conditions is heartbreaking. It was good people's pets are kept at the humane society until their owners can pick them up because the animals can be safe. It just looks so hard to leave any pet and see the face of the cat or dog. Being someone who likes cats I especially liked seeing the kitties, so very cute! And all the adorable doggies too! The efforts by volunteers and residents has been incredible to see and all that hard work has done alot of good. I hope for all those effected by things improve quickly and families can leave the shelters and return home.

On another note the report by Mr.Costello concerning the threat of bird strikes and the fact the FAA has really not disclosed any information to the public was very disturbing. With the threat of strikes on the rise it should be necessary for them to tell people not only about the threat, but which airports are more apt to have them happen. Hopefully, in the near future the public will know more.

The piece by Mr.Lewis about cities and towns turning off the lights for an hour is a good thing to do and sends a message about global climate change.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO
Hi Lester

I been following the status of the flood and I'm praying things go well. It was such a relief to see President Obama take action quickly before the problem damaged everything. He's preparing in advance and that's good. FEMA under new leadership is already in position.

Looking forward to this evenings news
See you same time same place
I empathize with the people in Fargo and
they are in my prayers. Such a God-awful
situation.

And you, Lester, are a technological marvel
as well, what with so many riveting stories,
covered in the abbreviated space,.

Have a nice weekend!!!
Hi Lester,
My husband and I were traveling in Fla. a few ago. We stopped by the Kennedy Space Center. We were struck at how many people were there. Guess why. There were more tourists than usual because the space shuttle was coming back that very day, within a few hrs. of us arriving! I'd never been so excited in my whole life. After a couple of sonic booms, there it went.It was and is mind blowing.
I admit that I take the space shuttle for granted,as if it's an every day thing. But it really is still something to be awed by.

Thanks,
Vickie
Great show Lester

I must say Chuck Todd's report was factual and excellent as this is what the public needs to hear. This is the kind of reporting done by the great ones. Chuck get's two thumbs way up for today's report. We really enjoyed the facts.

I notice President Obama is using every resourse we have available which is great. I will not say what the weather is here in California.

We will be leaving our lights off for one hour tonight.

Best as always to Lisa, Laurel, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Lori, Anna and Matt
I think Chuck Todd's report tonight on members of Congress accepting campaign contributions from the banking industry was misleading.

I should begin by saying that I am not in the banking business and neither is anyone in my family. But I do know that corporations cannot make Federal campaign contributions, yet Mr. Todd referred more than once to donations being given "by" the banks that had received bailout money. The clear implication was that some of the bailout money was being recycled in contributions to members of Congress. Later in the report he did acknowledge that these were PAC contributions, but then observed that those giving to the PACS were executives, "not bank tellers." My understanding is that PACs, by law, are not allowed to solicit contributions from hourly workers at all -- they MUST take money only from the management. And of course, since political contributions are the most discretionary kind of discretionary spending, chances are that only the higher paid executives will participate.

Look, I'm as furious with those clowns as everybody else is. But I think that report was misleading and unfair, and I hope that next time Mr. Todd will be more careful. There has been so much overheated rhetoric used in commentary about this problem. I count on responsible news sources like NBC to shed more light than heat on matters like this, and tonight I felt you let us down.
Response to Stephanie Vardavas, Portland, OR

Chuck Todd's report was correct as several Senator's reported the same information live as they explained their positions. As Chuck said many other Law Makers both Republican and Democrats were on the list. It's something that has always been done but without the Public's knowledge until this transparentacy policy.

As you know being your in the banking business the CEO who said he would take only $1.00 in pay got shares to replace his salary. Most of the information being released in hard for no corp. people to understand such as the role of the Board of Directors and the Shareholders. Corp. have their own contracts and they can do what they want, but as we see when you are treated like anyone who goes to the bank for a loan their are rules. The subdivisions of the Banks gave to the Law Makers. Each large Banks has subdivisions of other services in the US and Foreign countries. Money has been given and we might not know the connection but the person receiving the money does. Tim Geithner explains that on his website. So because Bank of America is a large bank it also has other services and divisions.  As you have noticed Goldman Sachs is a large well known Investment Firm who changed to banksing for as to be allowed some of the TARP money. As my GrandMother would say " if there's a will, there's a way".  After listening to John Boehner explain the money he received was legal and Reid say he didn'nt cash the check one might think this wasn't a crime just another way of doing business as usual. I'm sure most bank employees didn't know when the Executives give out bonuses in the millions to top people even when the bank or investment company is failing or going out of business the regular employee never sees a dime of that money.  Chuck just gave the facts even if we don't like to hear the truth.
I thought the I-Pod gift from Pres. Obama to the
Queen was wonderfully cool; an expensive gift
would have been totally tacky and inappropriate. Just
my opinion, Lester.
