A can-do hairdo: Free cuts provide recession relief

Every Monday for the past month, Joyce Deliyiannis, a master stylist at D'Spa by Dellaria in Burlington, MA, has come in  on her day off to offer free haircuts to clients who are cutting back on expenses due to layoffs. Some need a touch-up for an upcoming interview. Others just relish an opportunity to get out of the house for a little while.

"It may seem like a small thing, but when it's needed, it's big," says Joyce, who has set no expiration date on the recession special and offers the free service to her clients' family members as well.

As Joyce's client Ilene Sapienza put it,"It's more than a haircut -- it's therapy. When you lean back in her chair, she makes you feel important. Her vibrance and energy leave every customer feeling uplifted."

After their haircut, each client writes in Joyce's journal. Some share words of wisdom and encouragement.  Others leave their contact information in hopes that the next person in the chair will read about their situation and be able to help.

Joyce's generous sprit has caught on and has motivated others in the community to give what they can.  Some clients are paying it forward by donating their own free services ranging from real estate consultations to baby-sitting to computer training. And in a matter of just one afternoon, friends and clients brought by $170 to contribute to the Burlington Community Food Pantry in Joyce's name.

Roberta Damelin, director of the pantry, was overwhelmed with gratitude. Damelin does her part to stretch every dollar that comes in, spending hours bargain shopping and clipping coupons, but with 50 new families to feed in the last six months, she's seen the need for donations grow in these tough times. "We don't turn people away," she says, "but we're overwhelmed."

Brian, can you explain here how comments are chosen for posting.

Do you instruct those who manage the website as to who and what to post?

Thanks.
Dear Amy,

I watched that story last night. You never really think about it but these 'Making a Difference' stories really bring out the best in America. The one about the birthdays for homeless children was probably my favorite story.

The thing that I found the most shocking about the story is that boss is the one helping the workers. It really is touching. Another shocking thing was that in just 1 afternoon they raised 170$ by paying thier own money forward to a food pantry!! Truly inspiring.

                              Sincerely,
                                 Collin Clemons
My comment is on the Sorkin explanation of the AIG bonuses.  I think that was the dumbest explanation of paying the bonuses.  Bonuses are pay for performance!  I don't think losing money (not their own) would be classified as a good performance.  Sorkin said that they were in the business of making money!  Well, duh, when I was working in manufacturing my objective was to make money.  Those people did not make the company money if they needed to be bailed out, did they?  And again they were gambling with other peoples money, and they lost it.  So why would that warrant payment of a bonus?  And why would a contract call for payment of a bonus if they didn't do the job they were hired to do?
I was truely impressed after reading about this top notch stylist, Joyce, who came in on her day off to give free haircuts to those especially hit hard by the recession. I know this has great value toward self-esteem and can make the difference in getting the job. Cudos to Joyce! Also the way goodwill has spread in other areas including the food bank restores my faith in humanity. Joyce has inspired me.  I, too, am a stylist, and I'm going to see where I can help as well. Thank You, Joyce from all of us.
Please get back to reporting hard news.  'Making a Difference' stories were at first cute, then simply annoying.  People helping people is expected, not unusual and doesn't warrent national news.
Hello, I am a client of Joyce Deliyiannis in Burlington. Today I had my hair styled by Joyce and have been having my hair done  on a regular basis with her for the last 3 years.  From the first day I sat in her chair I knew she is truly a special caring motivated woman.  She said to me "people can move mountains with there honest kind living".   So when I seen her on the World News I knew she had moved the mountain and continues to give hair  services to people in need.  I am a paying customer with a good job at Shire (manufacturing dept.).   She is truly a Jewel and hard working woman.  I will continue to have her style my hair I always leave the design  and cut  up to her, and she makes me look beautiful.     Joyce is a god sent.
