The wall in the DC school building

I want to direct your attention to the last segment in tonight's broadcast. In its simplest terms, it’s a story about a wall, in a school building in Washington, DC. But it’s much more than that--it’s about children, about education, and the so-far incalculable effect the election of a new President has had among some. It’s an interesting item -- I hope it’s a story well-told, and we'd like you to pay special attention to the very end of our broadcast (for that matter--to ALL of the broadcast) tonight. We hope you can join us.

At the end of the story, Brian Williams said, "the magic of a mirror".  This is true.  However, in my opinion, it is the magic of a GREAT TEACHER!!!
You did a wonderful job on the last segment tonight, Brian.  I loved it; it was very inspiring.  I was once told I should run for president in 2012, once I pass the age requirement, because I have the leadership skills.  I never took that "advice" seriously, but I understand the importance of allowing kids the freedom to dream.  Such a great story!

I am in mourning, though, to hear that the Rocky Mountain News is folding tomorrow.  Oh, the death of my beloved newspaper industry... I never laid hands or eyes on the Rocky Mountain News, but its a sign of the times of the industry, and it so pains me!  However, I did appreciate seeing my beloved local paper, the Portland Press Herald, in the story!  How could I miss "Becky's Diner" mugs?  She's a cornerstone of the waterfront!

I can't handle my very meager budget; I struggle with it all the time.  I simply can't comprehend the nation's budget.

I am not sure how I feel about the Pentagon reversing the decision to not allow the media to photograph the fallen troops coming home.  On one hand, reversal is good, but are there enough ethical and respectful journalists and assignment editors who will allow families to grieve in peace if those are the wishes, or will this simply be used as another ploy for exclusives and ratings?

I have been away from the blog longer than I thought; I've got reading to catch up on!  I applaud Mrs. Obama for wearing no sleeves; I'd rather be sleeveless all the time, too, and wear no sleeves, even in the dead of winter - with a sweater or suit jacket nearby.  Each person's style is of his or her own making and I'm glad to see that the First Lady is comfortable enough to make her own.

Hello to our regulars; hope your week is going well!
Loved the story with the bulletin board and the mirror. As an educator, I see daily, the huge impact the election of our new president has had on our students.......... I have been hoping for a story that reported, how these same children, have not had peanutbutter in months. With school lunch programs funded by the federal government name brand peanutbutter is not available for them. With all the staggering amounts of money I hear daily mentioned that the government is dishing out I had hoped some Jif or Skippy peanutbutter might appear in our schools. Many of these same children get food from the local food banks that also depend on a lot of government food. It might not seem like much, but when a child has to go without peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches I would agree times are in fact very hard. Love the NBC news family and wouldn't watch anyone else.MB
The Wall in the DC School Building brought tears to my eyes, As an old retired Professor of Early Childhood Teacher Education, I was so very happy to see what you did in letting us see the children's and teacher's responses. It was so very simple and powerful. Thanks to the teacher and children and, especially to you for seeing the beauty in that experience.
the bulletin board was absolutely great!  I was brought to tears.  The kids interacting with it will be inspired by it for years to come.  Personally, as a teacher myself, I know a version of it will be on my wall next year.
Beautiful segment on a story about a wall, well done to the teacher of these young students. Sure made me smile.

Good Evening Mr.Williams, A great broadcast this evening as always. First of all the report by Savannah Guthrie about the economy really showed some huge numbers which simply are difficult to comprehend. Trillions of dollars needed in the budget with a deficit in the trillions is staggering and it seems an impossible thing to fix. Alot of spending will be taking place over the next few years.
Hearing in Mr. Liesman's report that 250 banks are in trouble and 100 may close is scary and one wonders where all the money will come from to save these banks.
The report by Mr.Cowan about the Rocky Mountain News publishing it's last edition tomorrow is sad for everyone who worked so hard at the newspaper. And for the readers. Learning that 4 other major newspapers are filing for bankruptcy shows declining revenues for the papers which again is sad because many people do read the newspaper everyday. I suppose the onset of the internet is making it hard on the papers, but it is still a vital way to receive local and national news.

On another note the report by Mr.Miklasweski concerning the ban being lifted on the coverage of the arrival of flag draped coffins of the soldiers is good because it pays tribute to the fallen heroes who fought so bravely. Yet,it is certainly acceptable to have the family decide whether coverage of their loved one should be shown. God Bless all out brave men and women in uniform.

The piece at the end of the broadcast about the school in DC was simply wonderful. The mirror on the wall near the picture of President Obama where the children can look and see themselves does say they can be whatever they dream of being in life. They can accomplish anything. The future is bright for all these children. A great piece Mr.Williams!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams! See you on the Daily Show this evening later. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO

I'll be waiting to see what's up with your posting.

Now to the news of the day. Yes President Obama's budget is big but Bush made more debt then all the former President all together with nothing said. I'm looking forward to the record of how much taxpayers money was used for Iraq/Afghanistan that should be a eye opener.

Gov. Jindal did the right thing taking his vacation to Florida's Disneyland after reading some of this Parties comments. Smart move as he knew the Lt. Govenor will accept the unemployment money for the citizens.

Out here in California things are still crazy as even a Mayor is sending racist emails and then saying he really didn't know it was racist. As I read the article I kept thinking " sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never harm me". It's good to remember.

see you same time same place.
What an amazing teacher. She has captured the essence of bringing children's minds and hopes to a new level, black, white or any color. The expressions on those children's faces when they looked in the mirror were profound and priceless. I hope I live long enough to see that last little one fly into space!
I saw this segment tonight about the school that made this mirror wall- nice.  I hope that these teachers are telling kids that they can be whatever they want to be because they are unique individuals who make their own choices, because they work hard at something, and because they have a lot to give to this world.  This story led me to believe the kids at this school are being taught that their RACE determines what they become and how successful they are in life.  I really hope they’re not telling kids that.  That kind of message for a child of any race could be damaging to their view of themselves and how they view others.
Brian -

The look on those little faces will stay with me for long time.

And the teacher whose idea it was deserves some praise for her creativity.

Thanks for airing that segment.

Joan
Mirror, mirror on the wall . . . want an insightful and creative esteem builder this fine teacher is.  To realize that self-image is the foundation of success at even this young age is role-model behavior.  God Bless you and your wonderful school.
BRIAN WILLIAMS; GREAT REOPRT - WHISH THE SAME HAD BEEN DONE FOR THE GM REPORT. WHISH THAT YOU HAD INQUIRED HOW MUCH SPENDING WAS DONE ON THIS PARTICULAR TRIP BY THE CEOS. THEY KEEP ON SPENDING AND NOTHING HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED, OTHER THAN JOBS AND HEALTHCARE CUTS.
Hi, Brian.

Thank you for the broadcast tonight. The end segment was as great as I had expected it would be, what a beautiful story. I hope that all children dream as big as these precious children do. It's so very important that the young children of our generation dream as big as they want, they are our future and we need them to dream big as they need us to help them grow into this beautiful, messy world.

I hope you have a great night, Brian.

I'm looking forward to Friday night's broadcast!

P.S. Hello back to Stephanie and Lisa, and howdy to everyone else out there!

Take Care,
-Cary

Could someone please send the name and address of the Wash.DC.school featured in tonight's segment re: the mirror on the wall as a way to build the children's self- images of themselves and relate to our new president. I am going to have my class send congratulations notes to the teacher and students.

Well approached. Well produced.
Congratulations on a great segment. Brilliant teacher and the kids were amazing. The cameraman and producer did a fantastic job.
Twenty years ago my son wrote an essay to get into USC student program as a high school football player. The essay was titled " When I look in the mirror".  I asked to read it and was shocked. Preppie told his life in pee wee/pop warner/high school footage and his fellow team members as he concluded he didn't know about being a black player until a man at his last high school game called him a black defensive linemen.  For all his life until that day color was never used to idenfy anyone nor did his team mates every use race.

Now 20 years later I get to see young kids that will look in the mirror and have their story to tell. Dreams do come true if you truely believe in yourself.

Best to my friends Lisa, Laurel, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Lori, Anna and Matt
What a great story on the wall.  I think every school and every child could benefit from a mirror on the wall like that.

I just caught the Daily Show a few minutes ago.  Funny as always!  I love the dynamic between you guys.

Mr. Williams,

The last segment was amazing...almost as amazing as your appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart! Great job! I love watching you when you're not in front of the camera working! Hilarious!

Make sure you make it out to LA to visit Conan! Those are the best :)

Mr. Williams, if you point out a segment, do you think you could provide the link for those of us who might try to watch online? I can't find the story you're referring to in the playlist, but I'd really like to see.
Unfortunately, I missed the piece.  Which school in D.C. was it about?
"It's better than winning the lottery." For anyone that saw and heard that, and it didn't move and have an impact, I'm not sure I want to know you.
Brian ,you are truly a great newscaster with  presence and substance. As your news coverage has so pointedly made us aware of the economic downturn in our economy I ask that you consider that people and their habits are shaped by the confidence in our economy. The economic news stories tend to harp on the negative in our economy and not on some of the more positive aspects our economy. People are distraught and depressed and sinking more so everyday. We are not at the end of the world. However, viewers think we are because all we hear is how everything is in a 'crisis'. How about 92% of the country is still employed for a positive twist. Or that we produce $2.5 in goods for every $1 China produces. Confidence goes a long way in restoring peoples spending habits and a faster turnaround in our economy. Broadcasters owe it not only to their viewers but, to our country to enhance our reality that we have overcome all major obstacles that this country has had to deal with. It is our will and determination that has made us the country we are. It is time to build us up not tear us down. We are only shooting ourselves in the foot by perpetuating strictly negativity rather then showing our strengths. Viewers, I believe, will start turning off the news (as many have done) if the news doesn't have a more positive aspect and less dire descriptive terms. Lower viewership will help lead to less advertisers thus helping to fuel the economic downturn. We have arisen from every major juncture in our history as a stronger nation, we will transcend into better times.
Best Regards,
Michael Penn
What an inspiring idea and what an inspiring teacher. As a fourth grade teacher myself I hope that some of my ideas inspire others as this teacher's idea has inspired me. I hope to replicate this idea in my own school. My students live in rural southwest Virginia and often don't see any future ahead of them. I hope this will inspire our students to look towards a future that can be bright and full of promise.
I loved that segment on the DC school! As a young adult, it inspired me with hope to keep trying for my dreams even when things are tough and I can't find work. I don't think I'll ever forget those little kids. And hats off to that teacher!
I have to say my favorite little one was the cutie who shyly said, "I want to be a firefighter", as that really hits home. Good luck little man!
Brian,
I liked the segment too.
But you looked like an idiot trying to speak with Rick Santelli last week.  Sorry.
Good luck in the future,
Mark Young
That's why teachers need to be paid more!!!!!!!!
I viewed The Wall in DC story the other night and noted the success that this private/public school is having.  However, I wondered if this isn't one of the charter schools that the Democrats are seeking to stop funding. The reporting failed to cover this issue.
that report was awesome. when will a video of it be posted? it's very inspirational.
Hi,
We are international students in LA who are watching Nightly News with Brian Williams.
We enjoy watching the reports and would like to know about his English pronunciation.  Where does it come from?
We like it a lot and hope that a day we will reach the same clear and elegant voice.

Thanks
