U.S. guns arming Mexican drug traffickers

NOGALES, MEXICO -- When considering the vicious drug war being waged in Mexico,  it's instructive--and a bit disconcerting--to head south to look at it from Mexico's point of view.

While U.S. citizens are rightfully worried about the violence and the tons of cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine and heroin crossing the Mexican border into the United States, Mexican officials have their own complaints about the threats they face from their neighbor north of the border.

Mexican officials point out that almost all the financing for the murderous Mexican drug cartels--billions of dollars a year--comes from U.S. drug users.
They also note, and U.S. officials confirm this, that 90 to 95 percent of all the traffickers' high-powered weapons are purchased at gun shows, gun shops and
from independent dealers in the United States and are then smuggled into Mexico.

Because Mexican gun laws are so restrictive and very few Mexican citizens are allowed to own or sell guns, the traffickers purchase most of their weapons in the U.S. where the laws are more lenient and federal firearms agents are stretched woefully thin.  (Several sources have said that along the entire 2,000 mile U.S.-Mexican border, there are fewer than 100 federal firearms agents currently working weapons smuggling cases.)

On too many occasions, Mexican police have been simply out-gunned and overrun by the well-armed drug gangs. Just last week, the police chief in Juarez, Mexico, resigned after the drug traffickers began to make good on their threat to methodically kill his officers one by one if he didn't quit.

Federal, state and local public officials, as well as soldiers and journalists, are also targeted by the traffickers as they fight to defend and spread their narcotics operations. Innocent bystanders are often caught in the crossfire.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon and other officials have been begging the United States to tackle the drug abuse problem more effectively and to do a whole lot more to slow the illicit weapons trade. In a moment of frustration, the Mexican Attorney General told me once that too often the United States appears to be fighting the drug war on the wrong side--by financing and arming the traffickers.

No one suggests Mexico is devoid of responsibility on this issue.  The poverty, widespread corruption and failures of its justice system all enable to traffickers to operate with impunity in too many areas.  But, under the current presidential administration in Mexico, the government is fighting back and has sent more than 45,000 troops to confront the drug cartels.

In the United States, an increasing number of officials are realizing the Mexican drug war is also a serious U.S. problem.  Among other things, there is proposed legislation now to hire more firearms agents to stem to southbound weapons flood. Washington is also helping to train and finance Mexican authorities through its Merida initiative, although the amount of that aid clearly pales in comparison to the money and arms the traffickers collect from the U.S.

Maybe if their gun laws were not so strict, the average person could defend their family from these thugs and fight back.  Change comes from the masses, when the people have a unified goal and the means to accomplish that goal nothing can stand in their way.
Mexico needs stronger enforcement, not less guns.  We have a hundred times more guns per capita than the Mexicans do, but do we have the out of control level of violent drug related crimes here in the US?  NO, quite the opposite.  Because we already enforce our laws 1000% better than the Mexican Government will ever enforce theirs.  Why do they have this problem?  Because though we all acknowledge that our politicians are corrupt, out of touch with the common man, and do not have our best interests in mind, theirs are much, much worse.  And their government (AND the Drug Lords) use gun control to keep control of the citizenery who cannot defend themselves.  What we probably should do is re-arm the entire Mexican population (they were once armed as we are).  Most Mexicans are good and hard working people, if you were to arm them as we are armed they would take back their country from the Drug lords and then deal with their corrupt government themselves instead of being "colateral damage" on the streets.
Gun Control does not stop crime ! this should be lession to us ! Mexeco has had strict gun control for 35 years an look at this ? .New York is an another really good exsample , LOL , Nations with little or no gun control , have little or no crime .
Remember there were gun shows in the us BEFOR the problems exploded in mexico--so it's not about guns.
The discrimination campaign about against american firearms owners the media launches, depicting our rights as A Threat  to justify the brutality of REMOVING RIGHTS is being revived!
  This report is an example.
Americans are urked by discrimination campaigns! They do not help find solutions , for Mexico or the USA.
Another emotional hype and spin story in order to social engineer American society into Marxism. You can't use America to blame for Mexico's 3rd world culture.
So ALL of Mexico's problems are caused by some of them (the criminals) getting OUR guns?
The news broadcast mentioned that the guns in question were being bought by "straw purchasers".  If the show was really "NBC News", instead of "NBC Left-wing Propaganda", they would have mentioned that making such a straw purchase (in which an eligible person buys a firearm for a non-eligible person) is already a felony under current law. (If anyone cared to enforce existing gun laws...  No one seems to want to do that, but liberals always want more gun laws.  Their own peculiar version of putting criminals on "double-secret probation"...)
How amazing that when it involves guns and possible restricting them in our country it suddenly becomes national news.My brother lives near the border and this has been going on for over a year. Now when it could possibly meet an agenda(gun control)we have a problem. It doesnt matter that scores of US citizens have been kidnapped or killed or millions of tons of drugs are flooding the country. Its becoming apparent that the government is chopping at the bit to regulate our lives as much as possible. But as many of my fellow citizens and lawmakers in my area think we will live by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights regardless of what the Fed thinks or does.
I think the NRA is slightly responsible.  Where do people think the lax gun laws have come from, the NRA is glad handing to the American Politicians in exchange for votes or other services...
This article is so liberal biased it's not even funny.  You think drug cartels, who bring in billions of dollars each year in profits, have to send their soldiers to U.S. gun stores to buy WASR semi automatic weapons.  Are you kidding me?!?!  All the drig cartels have to do is get their fully automatic weapons from any number of cash strapped countries looking for hard currancy.  To think that a Mexican citizen can just hop over the border to buy any weapon he wants without being a U.S. citizen or passing a background check is laughable.  But this is waht the U.S. Government wants you to believe so they can rid the U.S. consitution of the 2nd amendment.
Gun restriction is clearly not working for Mexico. I too suggest that Mexico take a more libertarian view of personal firearm ownership and allow those citizens willing to assume the responsibility for persoanal defense that opportunity. Secondly, the "drug war" is based on an illegal market. If drugs were legalized there would be much less crime, better control of substances (making their use safer) and no more dependence problems than we have today. A significant portion of the tax revenue from recreational drug sales could be spent on drug treatment. While I do not use any kind of drugs or alcohol, I believe all recreational drugs should be legal and controlled; this is a far more enlightened approach than war and corruption.
It does not matter where they get the guns what matters are the crimes they are doing this story makes it look like its the fault off american guns.WRONG.
This is just the first step of the propaganda the Obama administration will be unleashing to try to restrict U.S. citizens right to firearms ownership. It happens with every Democratic administration.  If people are legally or illegally buying firearms in the U.S. and illegally transporting them to Mexico, find them and lock them up.  You don't stop everyone in the U.S. from driving because some people break the law and drive drunk.  Let's get a grip and rigorously enforce the laws currently on the books as opposed to putting new oppressive laws on the books that only affect the law abiding and do nothing to the criminals who pay no attention to any laws.
I am wondering how the traffickers are able to purchase military grade weapons, (fully automatic weapons, live explosives), in the United States.  A normal U.S. citizen can not purchase such ordnance without special permits and licenses from local, state, and federal governments.  I also find it very difficult to that such a high pecentage of arms originate in the U.S.

I also agree with the other gentleman's post:  if their gun laws were not so strict, ordinary Mexicans my have been able to fight back against the traffickers, both gun and drug smugglers.
So all these automatic weapons were purchased at American gun show? Automatic weapons have been regulated in the U.S. since 1934. If the Mexican authorities have been "out gunned", it's because they have furnished the wrong weapons to their men. They should try fully-automatic assault weapons. These weapons are NOT available at American gun shows because they are illegal to own without a permit from the government (BATFE). This is just another Democatric snow job that we aren't buying.
I would like to see this "report" of how 90 to 95 percent of all weapons are from the US.
you ever stop and think of where these Mexican Drug Cartels get their drugs? from Columbia and Bolivia. These are countries with active rebel forces. Did anyone stop and think that maybe they are getting their guns from the same cartels they get their drugs from? the FARC have backed Drug Cartels before. It only makes sense if you going to get drugs from them why wouldnt you get your firepower from them too? and really how many gun stores in the US sell fully automatic weapons, handgrenades, and RPG's?
having been a owner-operator and traveling into canada & mexico many times delivering loads and going through customs.Canada is doing a better job of policing there borders.crossing into Mexico I was never even asked any questions.Crossing back into the states I was checked by the military team from Ft. Hood Tx.at Hildago Tx.border crossing returning to the US.at the Dept of Agriculture. Our servicemen processed me through a full insp of my rig better than any other crossing point. If they checked the so bnd traffic w/same professionalism I am sure they could intersept most illegal currency&weapons crossing.Traffic out of Mex into US has vast distances to cross,Why can't we do a better job of intersepting the illegal cargos on our soils w/the exray tech being used to scan trucks as is used in the Fla. ag inspection stations? We could do a better job of aiding our neighbors.I can see a big effort   being made by the pres of Mexico to stem the rampant corruption of the past.I wish him the best on his stand against this cancer on society God speed.
The paranoia of the gun nuts on this page!
Get a grip, lads!

This report is NOT a first shot aimed at promoting your Obama Administration's supposed gun restriction agenda, or anything to do with left wing/liberal fascism, or whatever you've been fed by the exploiters of the gullible: hate radio jocks.

How about focusing on the things that can be accomplished here in the U.S: enforcing the current gun laws more strictly(which I'm sure will also be seen as fodder for gun nut paranoia), and making a greater effort at preventing drug use and addiction. It's the drug users that are paying for the guns, and the gangs both here and in Mexico.

But you boys cherry pick your pint s to prove your raging paranoia: the majority of us reasonable people are beginning to see that you have no intention of engaging in reasonable discussion - and all you do is cut yourself off from the discussion all together.
Sure arm the people and peasants of Mexico and we will have real fun between are border security and the illegals .That`s the perfect solution more Guns. bada bing badda boom badda bang!!!
Mexico is not the only country with a gun or drug problem.  Its arrogant of the U.S. to think that this is not our problem too.  We need to face this now, before it is out of control like it is in Mexico.  Its only a matter of time.
How about we stop buying and consuming drugs? What about the demand for these in the States? While all of you are so concerned about regulation for firearms you are no paying attention to your sons and daughters sneaking on you to use the drugs. The problem here is not the guns is the huge demand for the product, and yes we are the cunsumers of this product.
Mexico has been a maelstrom of corruption and government inefficiency for Lord knows how many years. American business has been the same way.  Looks like both countries are paying the piper for the way each country has been run
Gun control itself endangers the common citizen.Crime has decreased in states with concealed carry for law-abiding federally checked out citizens. Gun control in Chicago & New York has grossly failed. For Mexico,
the fastest way to lower murder rates of the innocent is to allow the lawful citizen to be able to arm and defend themselves & their families. No form of law enforcement can do it for them. Capitol punishment & long prison terms w/o parole are the ONLY solution to drug distribution and use. The dealers should be executed for all the deaths they have caused & lives they have destroyed.
Hey Simon J....Go take a flying leap off that high horse you believe you are riding so highly on.  Pro-gun citizens aren't "gun nuts" nor are they paranoid.  The truth is the paranoia comes from the other side of the gun issue.  Most who don't own them or believe they shouldn't be available to the average, law biding citizen are the "paranoid gun nuts" as you so eloquently put it.

You know there are plenty of other places you can choose to reside if you are so critical of our freedom.  I believe you can be a SUBJECT of Great Britian, but the rest of us will choose to be a CITIZEN of the US.  Sincerely, John
I saw for myself how Mexico enforced their gun laws when I went on a dove shooting trip last August. We were repeatedly searched and subjected to demeaning interrogation by 19 year old soldiers who were 100 miles from the border when even a cursory examination would have revealed no connection to the drug trade. None of us will return and another opportunity for legitimate business is lost
they are trying to  get america to put  gun bans in to effect  again ,, which wouldnt do a single thing but  take and keep guns from law abiddin citizens ...the crimials will always  have them
Shut down the border and do a 100% check on all individuals and vehicles going North or South and Mexico will solve it's money & gun problem going to the drug gangs.   Might help our illegal and drug problem to!!!!!
Will death penalty implemented will it do any good to stop the violence? If so what are they waiting for.
When I saw the firearms represented on the television, I saw a goodly number of select fire weapons, something very strictly regulated here in the US. If I can buy M-60 lmg's, like I saw there, perhaps someone could tell me where. Think of this: if a drug cartel can import tons of drugs from another country, why not tons of guns? Why bother to get them here? And why won't the media elite give us the serial numbers so we can run down these criminals? I'm afraid it's just another false reason for the government to remove another of our rights.
If the Mexican government thinks that the US is "arming" the drug cartels, and wants us to restrict gun sales, the cartels mearly bring them in from anywhere else. Too many other countries sell without any restrictions.

The kinds of weapons the cartels have, most could not be bought here. These are military weapons and the military dosen't have a yard sale of these weapons.

Remember, An armed person is a citizen, an unarmed person is a statistic, and 911 is state sponsored dial-a-prayer.
This campaign to link U.S. firearms ownership with the problems in Mexico heard it's first shot when Obama was inaugurated and someone asked about the so-called "assault weapon" ban...his answer, "It would help in Mexico." Then, two weeks ago, Daniel Schorr, left-wing toady on NPR, was commenting on how the Mexican drug cartel "liked our Second Amendment." Most of these posters are right on target (no pun intended). This is Obama/CBS/NBC/NPR/ABC ginning up the push for getting the "when the issue is ripe" for Nancy Pelosi, who said Congress would revisit guns when...

As I recall, our friend Hugo Chavez in Venezuela is in the business of building AK-47s and with the price of oil down, I'm certain Mexican drug gangs can buy all they want.

You blind lemmings who hate the Second Amendment and attack it with the First are the one's who'd better get a grip!
It is time for the United States & it's people to march south to Mexico & wipe out all the drug lord's & anybody caught in the cross fire.  We have to militia's to do it & many home town sharp shoter's to finish this thing befor it get's here so let's do it....
Everybody is missing the point!!!

If there was no demand for drugs there would be no traffic, and therefore no cartels and no crime.
All you do is complain about your guns but no one says anything about the rampant use of drugs in the US.

Come on, the only way to stop the drug lords is to stop buying their product! As long as there are people here using drugs and just getting a slap in the arm whenever they get caught, there will be people willing to supply those drugs. Pure and simple capitalism!!

You can flood Mexico and the US with guns, and the cartels will continue to do their dirty work as long as you continue to buy their product.
All this hype on "guns going to Mexico" is a prelude to more gun control here in the US.  Attorney General Holden has already spilled the beans that he wants to revise the Assault Weapons ban...under which anything can be classified as an "assault weapon"...anything with a detachable magazine, a revolver, a pile of rocks, you name it.
Laws are effective on those who follow them. How fast did you drive home from work, vacation, to te beach?  what speed was posted on the sign?Nothing stopped yo from breaking the law...and its on a sign  to remind you!
State By state Activate the National Guard, seal the Border. rotate NG troops, using curently deployed units. Pre-deployment troop could hone their patroling skills before being deployed to Mid-east. This may also be more cost effective.
The title of this article by Mr Potter is US Guns Arming Mexican Drug Traffickers. Obviously his main point is about guns and his bias towards the availability of Americans to own guns shows through loud and clear. If, as mentioned by some, that this is not an attack on gun ownership then why title the arcticle in the way he did. He could have simply called it Trouble on the Southern Border, or some thing else concerning the real issue which is drugs and the Mexican government's inability to handle the problem. No, it does not take a genius to pick up the real agenda here, no paranoia needed, just an ability to read and an understanding of the Democratic Party platform. This is a shot at guns and those who enjoy the shooting sports. I say enforce the existing laws and focus on drug control, not gun control.
REWRITE THE US  CONSTITUTION, REWRITE THE  MEXICAN CONSTITUTION, SEAL THE BORDER!!  AND  PUT  THE  GUN  COMPANYS OUT  OF  BUSINESS..PROBLEM SOLVED.
Our Government gave the Mexican Government US $1.4 Billion to combat these people. To buy weapons better than they have.
We need to stop our drug users here, and we need to get our National Guardsmen on the border.  If not, then the states need to organize their own Militia to put on the border to stop any illegials from coming into our territory.  That is the reason we can own Firearms here in America. It is a State's right given to us in the original 10 Bill of Rights of 1789 - 1791. It is time to get tough.  Legal Guns aren't the problems; illegal use of drugs and illegal aliens are.
Seth:
There was an article in these pages not too long ago saying most of the firearms the drug cartels have came from China.
The real problem is illegal drug use. The US market for illegal drugs is the source of cash that actually funds this drug war. Also the greatest fans of drug use are on the left. A population that is stoned is more easily controlled by a government. Prime example: Holland. It has very tight gun control, but lax drug laws. Parents should do a better job to encourage young people to stay off drugs. How about mandatory yearly drug testing to maintain your driver's license. Pot stays in your system 6 mo. and coke 1mo..If you test positive no driving.
OK, I watched the 'news' and have read the comments on this page. I don't consider myself the derogative 'gun nut' but I am a firearms dealer, promote shooting sports and teach firearms safety. With all this said, I have a few questions about the report.
1. All of the firearms shown in the report looked like military firearms, but did they operate like them, i.e. automatic or burst fire? Probably not since those types of firearma have been regulated since 1934 and the regulations updated in 1964.
2. The comments from this as usual deal with the emotion rather than the facts.
Fact 1: Straw purchases are a felony.
Fact 2: Automatic firearms are regulated by 2 Federal acts, 1 in 1934 and another in 1964.
Fact 3: We DO need more ATF agents to police the firearms movemement across the border as well as the 1 in 100 bad Firearms dealers out there.
Fact 4: This has been going on for a while now and as far as I can remember, the only mention of the problems on the Mexican border are when people of note or importance are killed or when the media can sensationilize it to promote it's agenda.
Fact 5: The NRA (insert horrible epethet here) has amazingly supported stricter enforcement of ALL 14000 plus firearms laws already on the books of the United States Government as well as the State governments.
Please, if you are going to comment, do so with a modicum of intelligence as well as facts. Otherwise, it's opinion, and you all know opinions are like....
For you bleeding heart liberals who and are all too willing to surrender your rights to own a firearm or to protect yourself(we already know you wouldn't protect your child), feel free to do so, there are enough of us law abiding citizens that will protect ourselves, you and your children from the drug pushing mexicans who come across our border to do us harm. Just bring me food water and ammo, and I will sit out there and pick them off all day long.
The main solution to this problem is; 'STOP CONSUMING DRUGS". If people do not buy drugs the drug cartels are not going to have money to buy guns, they are not going to corrupt police in both sides of the border. As long as there is demand, the drugs are going to keep comming from Mexico or any other country. Another important issue is that in the U.S. most of the people buy guns to prtect themselves and keep them at home. On the other hand in Mexico,  the drug cartles buy guns to kill each other and get control of the territory.
Delmar Fairchild wrote:

Sure, it's NEVER the US's fault. Such evil things must have originated from commies like China or those lazy Mexicans. Wake up, people! This article stated that US officials admitted that 95% of the drug cartels' guns came from the US. Not to mentioned all the American users who are financing them. Yet, so many "patriotic" red-necks simply deny the facts and continue to look for ways to lay the blame on someone else. It's just amazing.
Drug dealers do not buy weapons for $1-3K per item, then spend more money making them full automatic! They go to any number of neighboring nations where many military personnel are poorly paid, bribe or give a cut of the money to buy FULLY AUTOMATIC MILITARY-GRADE WEAPONRY for 1/20 the price!

This article is a crock!  I am tired of feeling like an outcast because I own a firearm. All tools and technology can be abused!  How many people die in car accidents?!  Will they ban cars for public safety?

The issue itself is Mexico.  They never have been able to stabilize their government...a large part of that is the education system, the other part is that the people may have to reinforce the government with militia volunteers.  The government is only as strong as the people they protect...unless your are like former President Fox and simply appease the drug cartels, which is how this got so out of control to begin with.

I agree with Patricia from Seattle.  Our fellow citizens are funding the violence.  Perhaps we should change some laws.  I have never consumed drugs, but I think that if marijuana production and distribution were legalized, we might reduce a lot of the violence.  Also, if our country is so great (I love it dearly.) then we need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves why such a disproportionately high percentage of our fellow citizens have a desire or need to consume cocaine, heroin, and meth.  Why?  We are the largest consumer of hard drugs in the world. Too many citizens feel the need to self-medicate.  Our way of life needs a spititual renewal.  (And no, I'm not promoting any particular religion.)  I think our addictions are a symptom of a larger problem.
The real problem is that we baisicly have open borders and no interest in enforcing our laws. I have yet to understand blaming an inanimate object for the actions of people.
My fellow gun-owners and believers in the Second Amendment need to calm down and ramp down the rhetoric-- you're making us all look like raving, paranoid lunatics. Furthermore, if you can't be bothered to spell correctly, and use proper punctuation and grammar, don't post anything. It's an embarrassment. I swear, sometimes the worst enemy of the Second Amendment is its most unhinged defenders.
Japan / England have strict gun control and only about 1/20th the gun related deaths as the USA.  We need easy access to guns outlawed in the USA as well.
Legalizing drugs and have them regulated by the Fed. would put the cartels out of business.  That worked when they repealed the prohibition of alcoholic beverages and put the Chicago etc. gangs out of business - Capone etc.
