Remembering James Brady

A few odds and ends that otherwise may get by us: first, the astounding story of the 17-year conference call. For those of us who came to know the principals by covering the Clinton White House, this was a fascinating piece of work. From the same source, and just as entertaining, is a treatise on our national attention span these days, and the pace of change.  Tonight we will remember James Brady who wrote a lot of our contemporary history during his career in journalism. I happen to think his greatest contribution was his work on the Korean War. James was a First Lieutenant, rifle platoon commander (Bronze Star recipient) who I believe told the gritty story of combat in Korea as well as Paul Fussell did with World War II or Michael Herr did with Vietnam.

Speaking of all things military, some after we aired our story on "challenge coins", and I showed off my own collection, proudly gathered from years of covering the military, I continue to receive coins from some very nice viewers. While I note that the Marine Corps is so far in the lead among all branches of the services, I want to thank the kind and generous folks who have thought of me.

We have a lot of ground to cover tonight and we hope you can join us.

If the Government will go after small businesses and owners for price gouging after a crisis where we are speaking maybe thousands of dollars in fraud and ethical violations, why will they not go after big business for ruining the world economy? I believe every single financial industry leadership group would be guilty of fraud and/or ethic violations in the trillions.
Hi Brian

It's so sad to hear all the States unemployment increased and the stories told are heart breaking. Once piece of good news is Obama/Biden bill to help Americans won with all Republicans and a few Democrats voting against helping the American people. I was shocked at Ohio/Michigan Reps as those ar two the the most in need. I jusr remembered how quickly these same Law Makers pass a 750 billion for Wall Street without any conditions applied. We now have a President who is looking out for all Americans even if the Law Maker's aren't.  Most States have to borrow money to stay up water, while they could be getting billions to rebuild.

I guess Eric Holder wouldn't give in to the Republicans demands to follow the Bush Policy of the DOJ. Even Senator Specter did his best to stall the confirmation in hopes Holder would don't follow the Law. I guess Eric Holder thinks more of up holding the Law and representing the American people then he does of the title of Attorney General. An honest man for an honest job.

Most don't know but Iraq and Afganstan will have elections soon and will have new Leaders. Without the direction of the former White House now the people of those two countries will choose their Leader.

see you same time same place
You all put the picture of the WRONG JAMES BRADY up on the obituary for James Brady. The initial picture you showed is the former Reagan press secretary!! He is NOT the man who died today!
I'm not sure a stimulus package is going to help us this time around, either.  It sounds great, and I certainly won't pass up a check if it lands in my post office box (hopefully the post office will be open so I can retrieve it!) I wonder if its going to be worth it to go into more debt.  I still think if any bailout is going to happen, it should go to homeowners loosing their homes.

I have two words for the Postal Service, taken from its past:  Pony Express.  Would save on emissions & all costs associated with autos!

I am apparently too preoccupied watching snow fall down outside my windows, because when I saw James Brady's name in your post, Brian, it didn't connect that he had died until I saw the broadcast.  I have so enjoyed reading his columns in Parade during the years; I will miss his prose.

I join the president in his & his daughters' amusement that school was canceled due to "a little" snow. I have the same feelings when I see cancellations in Maine!

I missed the coin story the first time around.  Thanks for "showing" it again.  Quite an impressive collection, Brian.

Hello to the regular readers!  I am going back to hibernation until I see sunlight again.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, A fine broadcast this evening. First of all the economic news simply was terrible. The report by Mr.Costello concerning the United States Postal Service cutting back service to five days a week could present a real problem for people even though there is a deep recession. It is vital bills, medication and many other important pieces of mail get delivered. I really hope it stays at six days a week. Time will tell.

On another note the report by Mr.Bazell about the peanut outbreak showed how serious and large a problem this has grown. Hearing this plant had so many violations is awful with so many peanut products being contaminated. One cannot understand how if these products failed tests they were still shipped out. I hope things get resolved soon and more people do not become sick.

Sad to hear of the passing away of James Brady. I recall many of his writing from Parade Magazine. He made great contributions in his journalism career.

I hope all those in the path of this fierce winter storm get their power turned back on and stay warm and safe. I am looking forward to Spring!

Iraq holds elections on Saturday and this will be important to the region as to troop withdrwals and whether the region can be run without the US Troops being in the region. Richard has a great Question and Answer on the Iraqi Elections on the web which really explains the situation well. Excellent reporting Richard!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Big Hug to you Laurel!
Stay Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO

Regarding the man that kiled himself and family, the handwritten plea,"is there no hope for the widows son ?" is a plea from a MASON for help. I didn't see that on your broadcast.Brian,I had ancestors in Elmira. Also, do you have a Navy DDG-101,USS GRIDLEY challenge coin?  Bill Gridley   (hence the coin)
Brian i have been watching you on tv for over ten or eleven years but was afraid to write because i dnt know how you would take it. i am a big tie fan and you wear the most admirable ties ever. i would go to work and tell my co-workers did you see brian's tie last night. it became so common that my phrase it usually, didyou and my co=workers would finished it, see drian's tie last night. where you you buy your ties i usually get mine at bloomie but now that i am not working i cant afford nothing. now job hunting can you just hire one more staff you would be doing a great deal to an individual who is in great need......where can i send my resume.....thanks much
brian you were great on the late show the other night you do have a great sense of humer but please dont do SNL again
Hi Brian,

I really liked watching Nightly News tonight (as always), but I have a small gripe about tonight's program. I was really hoping you would spend a minute at the end of Nightly to show us the pictures of the new Pandas that were recently born in China. With all the suffering in the world, sometimes we need to see something heartwarming. I think it's especially poignant because so many were born and kept alive after the earthquake. And clearly you like animals.

On another note, I just wanted to say that myself and my family truly enjoy that you have a sense of humor and are not afraid of letting it show. When are you going to be on SNL again?

Thanks for another excellent news report Brian.

I found the news that the Postal Service is considering cutting service by one day per week disturbing. As you said, Email is part of the cause, but the USPS is also having the same trouble that every other delivery business has had these past few years - fuel costs rose dramatically.

And why should our Post Office have to turn a profit? It is a public service. No one expects the Fire Department or the Police Department to turn a profit. Our USPS mail service is an essential part of our economy.

Perhaps Obama and Congress can re-examine the structure of the USPS and consider reorganizing it. That hasn't been done since Richard Nixon - and then it was done after a two week postal worker strike. No doubt that system too needs modernization.

I hope the administration and Congress offers at least short term assistance to the USPS so that they can continue to fulfill their mail delivery responsibilities to the American public.

Our economy can't handle that level of disruption - also - in these difficult times.
I would like to know why everytime you, Mr. Brian Williams , always refer to President Obama as Mr. Obama. I was watching the show that aired tonight, Jan.28th, and I think you said Mr. Obama more than you did President Obama. Were is the respect? He is OUR President and he deserve the same respect that the other 43 previous Presidents have had. That is not only disrespectful to our President but also to America! It seems as though he has only been in office for seven days and is already being disrespected by the county he will lead over the next four years. Former Presidents are still being refered to as "President", and they should be, so why isn't the current president getting the same respect? What happened to respect for our country and the indivdual? I would love to speak to someone who work with this news broadcast about this matter. You can email me back and then exchange numbers. Thank you for your time and understanding.
I like Robert Beacham above, have to say, what are you doing. Announcing the death of James Brady the journalist while showing a picture of James Brady the former Reagan press secretary. It's hard enough to believe that you allowed that on the air and more incredible that you didn't correct the error during the show.
Hi, Brian! Thank you for tonight's broadcast. It's great to hear that some very nice viewers were so kind to send you new additions to your challenge coin collection. It's really an awesome collection, of course just because of all the stories behind each coin.

I loved that you said Blagojevich has been on a "media tour proclaiming his innocence", I just really can't believe what he's doing . . .

It's funny what President Obama was saying about the schools closing over a little ice, because our schools here were closed while it was only freezing rain. Of course the rain that fell Tuesday eventually froze on the roads over night.

I'm sure all of the Obama merchandise was very flattering to the new President at first, but now it's just turned a little creepy.

Thanks again for the broadcast tonight.

Take care!
-Cary
While I was meaning to, I forgot to mention the passing of James Brady. I love learning about people who I'm not too familiar with during Nightly News, of course I only wish I could under other circumstances. I hope he lived a long, happy, healthy life.

Also, I thought it was great that you made your correction right after coming back from commercial. Everyone makes a mistake, but not everyone corrects themselves. So kudos to you and NBC, for always correcting yourself and setting your viewers straight.

Take care,
-Cary
Good Evening Mr. Williams.  Something in tonight's newscast sparked the need in me to share something I've been troubled by when watching all the ads for inaugural memorabilia in general.  But, specifically, my interest is in the design of the presidential coins of others that have a bust of President Obama added in the foreground.  I find myself wondering why the coins in their entirety, except for the rendering of Obama himself, are in highly polished gold and silver while President Obama ia simply colored.  Perhaps I am reading too much into the decision to depict our president colored and not polished, gold, silver or platinum, or perhaps I still need to step back away from those days in the 40s and 50s when colored was a common term and not a pleasent term to carry as a label.  Just wondering...

Hey Brian,
Didn't see you this morning. Just wanted to say, "I hope you have a really great day.".  I'll check into the web through-out the day.  I always do.  Oh, thanks for the movie Sun & Mon, to you and all who put that together.  Gonna get dressed now, to see what my day holds.  The letter yesterday, was a first for me, as you could tell, it was a little different stance from God. I liked your note too.  I always do.
Glad you survived the weather; knowing that- makes me glad. Hope to see you today, tesa
I'VE BEEN LAY OFF MY JOB, I PAY CHILDSUPPORT I CAN'T PAY RIGHT NOW WHAT CAN I DO SO THEY DON'T COME AFTER ME.I DON'T WANT THEM TO TAKE MY LICENSE
Before the beleaguered Post Office stops delivering mail one day a week, why don't they require everyone who is not disabled to have their mailbox out by the street.  Numerous homes (in particular, Charlotte, NC) have mailboxes at their front doors rather than on the street.  The USPS could save a lot of manpower by requiring mailboxes on the street unless you have an exception.
to Brian Williams,
Why should the American people bail out the Automobile Industry. The Auto Industry could sell off their cars by selling cars on the thousands of lots by selling them at cost, plus a $1000 profit for the lots. They would also make a profit by financing the purchases. This would give them money for retooling their plants for making (Green Cars), and would put people back to work.
Just think of how low it would go if our "watch dog" media wasn't part of the AFL-CIO mafia that's feeding on the rest of us like we're a piece of soylent green in their candy dish.
Brian,   I used to love watching you every night but since Obama won you and during the election you were so biased torwards him!!!  What happened to being neutral in your reporting?  I want to know the truth about our politicians not just the good stuff.  Our government is specifically set up with a checks and balances system so we can keep BOTH SIDES OF THE ISLE IN LINE.  Come on now!
Hello Brian:Just a note to let you know how much I enjoy your evening broadcast.  You probably won't get this but, you do a wonderful job KEEP IT GOING
Brian, enjoyed seeing the comic chemistry you and Letterman had going on his show this week.  Interesting to see a different side of a person such as yourself who excels at the serious business of reporting the news.
Chris Dudley is all bent out of shape because you, Brian Williams, did not refer to Barack Obama as President Obama. First of all, he can be referred to as either MR. or President. Chris Dudley should watch the tapes of the debates between Clinton and Bush 41, where Bill Clinton NEVER called George H.W. Bush...President Bush. It was certainly a campaign strategy. Are you upset by that Chris? After the disrespect that the media handed George W. Bush for eight years, I don't feel sorry for Barack Obama. I respect "people" but Obama is going to have to earn it like everyone else. He will have much help from Brian Williams I'm sure. NBC is the "National Barack Channel.
