Binding us together: John Updike, 1932-2009

John Updike has died. We'll remember him on the broadcast tonight, but already one of the interesting things I've heard said about him was an old quote from Norman Mailer, who, along with Philip Roth, was a member of Updike's "graduating class" of American novelists--all three men never missed an opportunity to stress their manliness. Mailer said Updike was "the kind of author appreciated by readers who knew nothing about writing." Faint praise?

Word of Updike's death, from lung cancer at the age of 76, brought all kinds of praise for the author today. I found the word "erudite" in the
first two obituaries I read this afternoon. Updike was a member of our national upper crust--Harvard and tweed blazers--but was fascinated by the American middle class of the nylon jacket, and the post-War America that gave rise to their lives.

The Associated Press remembers him as the "tall" and "hawk-nosed" author who was "prolific, even compulsive" about releasing new works. He was a two-time Pulitzer winner for his "Rabbit" series, and as long as I live I could identify, from a great distance, the stripes on the dust jacket of "Rabbit Redux," which was considered the least of the series in terms of literary value. I remember the artwork on the binding of the book because it sat on the shelf of our living room when I was growing up. Updike had a similar presence in millions of American homes and lives.

Hey Brian,

With the Super Bowl on Sunday, the album released today and the tour schedule announced today, could this finally be the scenario that gets you your first interview with our man Bruce?

And what do you think about "Working on a Dream?"
Hi Brian

I listen to President Obama's interview to the Middle East, it was good. I had to tape it because I was watching you on Letterman.

As Republicans continue to block the bailout of Americans I heard today a man killed himself and his family because he was such despaire from losing his job and no help coming our way from the Govenment.

We did lose a great man John Updlike he will always be remember with his books.  Let's hope Americans start reading again.

see you same time same place
Good Evening Mr.Williams, A fine broadcast this evening. Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast! (Handsome in his blue shirt as always!) First of all of course, I will begin with Richard's "In Depth" report on President Obama's first interview with an Arab television station. As Richard stated it was a surprise to the Muslim world and hearing President Obama speak with candor and respect about the region. Saying that he has lived in these countries and has some Mulsim background would certainly be something the people of the region would be interested in knowing from him. He would work on the relations between the Israeli's and Palestinians to try and bring some peace to the region. Having the envoy to the Middle East arrive in Egypt is helpful in beginning any sort of peace process. As Richard stated there was respect and the tone was different from the past eight years. Hopefully, some peace will come to the region. Too much suffering has happened already. Time will tell.
Excellent reporting as always Richard!
PLEASE STAY EXTRA SAFE ALWAYS!

On another note the terrible winter storm is certainly bringing problems to many States. Seeing all the ice on the trees as Mr.Cantore spoke just brings about power outages and frigid temperatures. I hope it doesn't last long. All you are in the path of the storm stay safe and warm!

Sad to learn the passing of John Updike at the age of 76years old. He was a great writer.

The report by Mr.Bazell about doctors manking house calls is good news for people who have difficulty getting to the doctor. Even the clinics in the schools for the students because the students receive care and feel safe. Keeping everyone healthy. I hope the program goes to many other States.

And nice to know all eight babies and their mom are doing fine. Hope all keep growing nicely! Happy and Healthy!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams! Great reporting Richard! Always wonderful to see you! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Keep Safe and Warm!
Stay Extra Safe and Well Richard! Great Reporting!
XOXO
Brian, I enjoyed the visit on Letterman last night.  Funny as always! I'm not sure if he really tries to back you into an opinion, or just likes to rant.  ;-)

It's interesting how just the different tone of President Obama may make such a difference in Middle East relations.  Hopefully his approach really can lead to some positive changes.  It's so volatile there, it's hard to know at this point.

What a story about the octuplets born in California.  It was funny to hear that they were only expecting seven, but discovered a eighth baby in there.  I guess at that point, what's one more?
And here I was nervous about adding a second child.  That sure puts it in perspective!  Wow is right.

We're smack in the middle of the big winter storm. Lots of snow, now lots of ice... to be followed by lots of snow.  Lots of fun.

Lisa, I think that was more of a gray shirt Richard had on this evening.  ;-)
Jackie Republicans don't have the power to block the stimulus package. Democrats can pass it anytime they want to. ANYTIME THEY WANT TO.  Trying to blame the death of that family on Republicans on the hill is sick.
Isn't interesting how what our Mother's told us still works. Repect is what Obama is giving the Middle East. Most can remember when as children we were told to talk to the other person we said we didn't like. You find out you have more in common then you thought.

To many babies for me, no time to just play with them there's to many. May God bless the Family.

Brian I notice we pay the families for those we kill. With so many murders over the pass 8 years looks like that's where most of the debt came from. Richard just gave the bottom line and as usual he's right.

I saw the bailout plan for each State to get help. Republicans don't seem to be interested in it as they will block the bailout. Now most States are borrowing money from the Federal Govenment when they don't have to with this bailout money. John Boehner of Ohio said he will vote no but his State is in the worse trouble. I really feel bad for the Ohio citizens. Arnie better take the money California is in big trouble but not as bad as Ohio/Michigan.

Best to my friends Lisa, Laurel, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Anna, Lori and Matt
Hi, Brian. Thanks for the broadcast tonight!

Again, very nice blog title for today. You always seem to come up with the best titles! "Binding Us Together" really is a sweet dedication to the author John Updike, I'm not too familiar with his books myself, but I'm sure he was a great writer from what I heard on tonight's Nightly News.

So many things to think about right now that are in the news: The Stimulus Plan, Blagojevich (which I noticed you fumbled with Monday night, I don't blame you! You shouldn't have to be reporting on him again, haha.), and gosh . . . countless others.

Anyways, I saw your interview on Letterman Monday night, great interview! I'm always delighted to see you as a guest on any talk show, and I think you should visit Conan one more time before he moves off to California. One thing I've learned from your interviews is keeping your opinions to yourself, you do a very good job of it. I know it isn't always easy. I think I may start doing that in my own house . . .

Also thought I might recommend you see the film 'Gran Torino' if you haven't already. That is if you are interested in seeing it, I don't know any man (or woman) who couldn't love Clint Eastwood. Plus I hear it's his last acting role. I also love the theme title song, perfect for the movie.

Have a great Wednesday, looking forward to your Wednesday night broadcast.

YOU WERE A RIOT ON LETTERMAN. WHEN YOU STATED"AS A NEWS-PERSON I CAN'T GIVE MY OPINION ON POLITICS" YOU ARE SO FAR LEFT THAT WHEN YOU APPEAR ON MY TV SET IT FALLS OFF THE STAND.
Brian Williams has committed an egregious violation of the public trust and he owes his viewers an on-air apology.  On last Friday's Nightly News broadcast, Brian "revealed" that during Tuesday's inauguration, Yo-Yo Ma's quartet had been performing to recorded music because of the cold weather.  There's nothing wrong with that--the cold would have adversely affected the instruments and the quality of the music.  But Brian presented this story as if NBC News had just learned of it.  Not true.  According to a front-page article in last Friday's New York Times, NBC producers had been informed on Monday (the day before the inauguration) that in the event of cold weather, Ma's quartet would play to pre-recorded music.  Considering the frigid temperature in D.C. on Tuesday, it's a certainty that NBC knew at the time that Ma's quartet was not playing live.  But Brian didn't report this until Friday--three days after the inauguration.  And it seems that the only reason Brian reported it at all was because NBC had been outed by the Times.  So why didn't Brian report on cello-gate earlier?  Because Brian was protecting his friend Yo-Yo Ma from possible embarrassment.  On Dec. 26, Brian devoted an astounding four minutes of Nightly News to a profile of Ma and his Silk Road Project.  There is even a video on this website of Brian playing Ma's cello.  Clearly, Ma is an FOB (Friend Of Brian) and Brian withheld the story to protect his friend.  This is nothing new.  When the Times recently revealed that FOB Gen. Barry McCaffrey had been using his on-air time as an NBC News military consultant to promote policies that benefitted companies in which he had a financial interest, Brian remained silent, refusing to say a bad word about McCaffrey.  And on the Dec. 25 Nightly News, Brian spent almost four minutes interviewing FOB Col. Jack Jacobs about his new book.  A four-minute book promotion on Nightly News is practically an infomercial.  (I wonder if the book carries a "Brian's Book Club" sticker in its cover.)  And of course we all remember Brian's ridiculous softball interview with Chrysler's Jim Press (FOB) when Nightly News devoted an entire broadcast to promoting Chrysler cars and trucks.  In these cases (and many others that we probably don't even know about), Brian used the power of his anchor chair to promote and protect his friends.  This is completely inappropriate and Brian should offer his viewers an apology and a promise to immediately discontinue this Blagojevich-like practice.
Brian,
Please tell me you're working on a story about this...This is the beginning of what I'm really worried about. What happens when these banks start giving back some of the money we loaned them. I bet I can't expect a check in the mail....

John was a great man and he will be missed; he set an example for us to follow.  He was an asset to our community for all of us who seek the truth. - Raymonty.
Brian, thanks for your support, this is not to you or President Obama, but if if for us too.

Begin paying off your debt, He says, as a result, the time to start is now, to help save your future.

---What if 'banks' were in trouble and everyone's ability to pay was in doubt.
---What if the 'credit system became unworkable,' we would have a system by which people would be severely disrupted and 'could it be corrected?'
---What if the Rising spiral of inflation and a collapsing market caused a deep recession, and mass unemployment in the cities?

The analogy is almost perfect.  Would you call it an emergency. Well, I say she might be crying wolf, and that is sad, because it is in this one piece of advice, in my book, in which there is no risk, whatsoever, I say.  I hope I've made my point- God

Think of your emergency storage program as though it was a target. The most points are in the bull's eye, and you recieve lesser points as you move to the outside of the target. The ideal food storage program will be arranged in that manner. Howard Ruff

THis is exactly the reverse of what your present eating habits are.  In an emergency your 'problem' is exactly reversed, because your nutritional needs increase under stress, and obviously, we are talking about stress.

We can not afford to get sick.  Staying well becomes a matter of someone's life and death. I hope you are a little more convienced.  For all these reasons, and more I prefer the natural forms of vitimans.

I wrote to the church, but some who want to be first, will have nothing to do with us.  So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, gossiping maliciously about us.  Not satisfied with that, I will put them out of the church.  Dear Friends, I do not imitate anyone.

Though you already know all of this, I want to remind you that this passage was very significant to me today. My life seemed filled with worries and anxieties.  It was the kind of day when I just wanted to pull the covers over my head and forget everything.  Have you ever felt that way?  Prayers are not answered and one more thing; ANYTHING resembeling her silence, you do not want to behold.

The true Americans will stand, side by side whether there was a handout available or not. A true american hss strong beliefs and committments to her community and families. It is time to stand together because we have been divided so long by our own selfish greeds.
1998 we were warned of a recession-Did anyone go to the hill and inform the President that they could help? No because the foors to the church was always closed because the American public turned it's back and shutdown thier own government. Write to your Congressional staff when you need issues resolved, Speak now or forever hold your Peace. I'll tell you this our government cannot run on it's own. It's time to Face the Nation People. Write a letter of dignity and a letter of hope. Instead of grappling with your thoughts, write them down. Rome was not built in a day and if you have to disagree with any and everything that comes across the table than you should have faced the Nation a long time ago, like in 1998-The Great Recession. We as a People can make things happen, let's be a part of the solution, there are already too many problematic issues out there.
The banks can ban together a create a larger branch, the Agency's that are not working can be reorganized, the borders can be controlled by Naturalized citizens, the people that purchased homes and could not afford them can all move in with one another, the Wall Street movers and shakers can finance bigger corporations overseas, the rest of us can hush up or go join the ranks of the military, or sit it out in a house, or get up and make some positive moves and get involved.  America's not ready for trailertrash picnics, we have a lot to be thankful for-don't become a sideliner-become real. Let's rebuild our nation. Should have been done a long taime ago, but everybody was running into each other and greed divided us all up.
