Old man river at Obama's Inauguration

Posted: Monday, January 26, 2009 3:21 PM by Daily Nightly Editor

By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

With all the celebrities assembled in Washington for the Inauguration, it was nice to see some of the attention go to another promient visitor: "Sully," the Captain of US Airways fame, roundly regarded as a hero among us for saving the lives of 155 souls.

Sully (who got to meet the new
president at the Congressional lunch) was spotted at a Washington restaurant with his wife and two daughters on the eve of the Inauguration. The name of the restaurant? Hudson.

You'd think he would have had enough of anything named Hudson.

It's the start of a new week, and we sure hope you can join us tonight.

Hi, Brian! Hope you had a nice rest-full weekend.

(What a clever blog title for today, haha.)

It's great that "Sully" had the chance of meeting President Obama, I hadn't heard of that until now. Crazy that the restaurant he was spotted at was "Hudson", I too would think he'd had enough of anything with the name. Maybe it was his unique way of closure.

I went by Barnes & Noble Saturday night and finally found Jack Jacobs' book "If Not Now, When?", where there appeared to be only one copy left. So I'm hoping to go by there again soon to pick it up.

Looking forward to the start of the week on my "Nightly"!

Wishing you, and you all a great evening.
-Cary
Then again Sully might consider Hudson to be a lucky charm.
Please Dayly Night team, could you please update the videos of the weekendend night editions. They are not yet available and it is a pitty not to be able to follow NBC news for those who live abroad.

Thanks, Joan Morales
Brian,

I am so angry I could scream!! Thain and all the other bank CEOs need to be held accountable for their ridiculous actions. He and they don't have the slightest bit of remorse. It appears that it doesn't occur to them that they did anything wrong. I have never seen such disregard for ethics in my life. I am one of a few americans who did not accept a mortgage that I could not afford. I pay my bills and live within my means. I am sick and tired of my hard earned dollars going to save these banks that knew they were doing wrong from the start. It is outgrageous. Who is going to bail me out? I am a single 48-year-old woman, who's 401K has taken a major hit because of this financial crisis. I wonder if I will ever have enough to retire. When I hear about $1.2 million to redecorate an office because " Thain just couldn't work in it the way it was..." Was he being asked to work in a shoe box? If not, then how would he like to work in a cubicle all day long? How would he ever survive the horror of it all!! Is this ever going to end, I wonder.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, A fine broadcast this evening. First of all the report by Trish Regan showed grim news of major job losses and cutbacks by big companies. So many people effected by this economic crisis and it doesn't seem to be subsiding.

The report by Mr.Todd concerning the appointment of Treasury Secretary Timothy Geitner will mean much hard work on getting this economy is better straits. He certainly has a huge job ahead of him.

The report by Mr.Bazell about changes in the emergency rooms and how they can operate better and more efficently definitely can help pateints. Having many of the tasks carried out by other members of a team working with the doctor may improve the quality of care.

The report by Chris Jansing concerning packaging if products at the grocery store being smaller even though the price is the same certainly is frustrating to consumers. So many boxes, jars and bags contain less and it makes one have to go more often to buy more. I can understand that companies are having difficulties and must make reductions. I just hope things take a turn for the better and things will even out. Time will tell.

Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. It was nice that Captain Sullenberger, his wife and two daughters were able to meet the new President.  Ironic the name of the restaurant.
Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Keep Warm and Safe all in the path of the winter weather storm!
Stay Extra Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO
The Hudson thing is funny.

I'd actually not noticed my grocery products being downsized until I saw a story about it on the local news a few months ago.  Sneaky indeed!  The manufacturers definitely don't go out of their way to make it obvious.  I understand not wanting to raise prices, but this isn't much better.

Thanks to lnp and Lisa for the baby wishes on Friday.  (I said so on Friday, but my post was lost in cyberspace again!) We're still waiting for her arrival.  With the big winter storm barreling down on us the next couple days, watch it happen then!  Murphy's Law, you know!
Oh, I created a "Daily Nightly friends" facebook page, because I apparently have no life.  ;-)  It should be linked to my name at the end of this post... if my post doesn't get lost in cyberspace again!
Brian,

I love your broadcasts, and I watch you faithfully, but you've gotta throw us a bone.  Hearing bad news night after night is devastating.  I tune in each evening, cringing, knowing that the first words out of your mouth will invariably be something akin to "the news is bad."  Some nights you mix it up and say, "the news is very bad."

There's got to be something good to report about the economy.  Something.  If you can't think of anything, you can steal from me.

I noticed the change in package sizing a while back.  Since then I have made the switch from national name brands to store brands and/or generic.  The look the same and have similar ingredients.  And I don't notice a big taste difference.  You may get a few more stem by-products in a gereric but it is worth it in cost saving.

Take that national name brands.  If you hadn't made the size switch I wouldn't have noticed and made the change.
Been having troubles sending you comments.  Submit button didn't do anything.

This is a test to see if the submit works again after tinkering with my computer.

Thanks
Brian,

I must say I'm a fan of NBC news and considering all the difficulty facing our nation and its economy——can you please try to find the happy points of progress and success. Too many in the media only spin the worst and this could be adding the the lack of confidence in the hearts and minds of the working men and women. I found this on cnnmoney.com: "Finally, two bits of economic data were released Monday morning - and each was better than expected. The Conference Board's leading indicators rose 0.3% compared to the 0.2% drop economists were forecasting. Even more surprisingly, existing home sales rose 6.5% in December."

It's under the story titled: The market's illogical rally

Thanks for considering a positive vibe. In the long run it will be a more noble on your part. Do the right thing. Spread hope and joy as much as you can. The world has too much negativity.

NOT FOR PUBLISHING......

Mr. Willaims...

Loved the Letterman appearence.  Always enjoy seeing you on the talk shows, where the humour you once could display on the MSNBC news show.  Love it.

The next time you go over, you should supply them a "gag" tape for Dave to use at the end of his show to see if you made it back.  It would show the intro to your newscast and an empty chair as if you didn't make it back.  And then running in the studio door and starting your broadcast.  It would be very funny... and everyone who didn't watch your 6:30 east coast show live would wish they had.  Ratings ploy!!!!

Keep up the visits.  Love them all.  Hope you get to do another SNL.

David
Unbelievable.  Stupefying.  Mind blowing.  On Monday, Nightly News (the crown jewel in the NBC News family) actually managed to misspell the last name of Arnold Schwarzenegger.  During a story on auto emissions, an NBC News on-screen graphic identified the governor as "Arnold Schwarznegger".  Incredibly, Schwarzenegger may be the single most recognizable governor in the history of the U.S.  A google search of "Schwarzenegger" yields almost 12 million hits.  But Nightly News can't even spell his name correctly.  Is anybody at NBC even trying?  Hasta la vista, baby.
Brian, I was extremely surprised and disappointed by the title you chose for today's blog--"Old Man River At Obama's Inauguration".  The lyrics for the song "Old Man River" (also known as "Ol' Man River") were written by Oscar Hammerstein II for the 1927 play "Showboat".  Unfortunately, the song's original lyrics use the odious "N" word to describe African-Americans.  This is hardly an appropriate title for a blog that discusses the inauguration of America's first African-American president.  In the future, I would ask that you be a little more sensitive when choosing your blog titles.
Good morning! Appreciate you and your broadcast. The cost of getting care in the ER is a well kept secret, that is until multiple bills start arriving in the mail two weeks to two months later. There is no price chart to tell you how much the x-rays, blood work, or even a band-aid are going to cost. We just go in and place ourselves in their care ,they order tests {which by the way are used in ruling out what you don't have rather than treating your symptoms}and we just blindly consent. Guess what I am saying is if the prices for each procedure, CT scan, aspirin, blood panel and the basic charge were posted I could then have a say in my health care costs. Kind of like when you go to the Car Repair shop. I want an estimate of what it will cost me to fix my car. I then can decide that that is a reasonable price or I can get a second estimate. My choice.

What's happened to Nightly News?
Who decided to use precious world news time to show a clip from The View?
Hi Brian,
So....I am sitting flipping the channels and who do I see.... you on Letterman! I had just read your blog moments before and you hadn't mentioned a visit to Dave. Unfortunately all I got to hear was Dave saying "beautiful suit....nice to have had you on..."
I missed it. I decide to tape it later on the time shift station from Seattle at 2am but somehow I taped Countdown...which I like but it wasn't Dave and you. I will find you later on YouTube!
Great job on January 20th. Don't be so hard on yourself. All your loyal viewers know how hard you work.
Still freezing in Winterpeg, Manisnowba.....
Brian-
I saw your 'after-news' appearance.  You called him on 'bereft' and handed back a 'rankle.'
Also appreciate the candor on national politicians being on camera 18-hours a day.  I couldn't do that around my house!
A snow-day mom
Would that make Ol' Man River" one of the first Rap songs? snare drum. Sorry couldn't resist that one. Stay on them Norman!! So much fun watching these "rules for thee" but not for me democrats. Sam Fox couldn't be an ambassador to Belgium because he'd given money to the swiftvets, but all these tainted Obama appointments, no problem.
Hi there,
Don't be surprised when top managers stay aboard. I remember when Scott Paoer was going down the tube. First they "downsized", then they "right sized". I was talking to a welder asking if he throught that any managers would go this time?. He looked a sly glance at me and said" Have you ever seen driftwood get gid of driftwood"?
Hi Brian
I saw you on Letterman and he's a bad influence on you be really careful with David. He's confused now that he can't show Presidential Speeches. It just doesn't work now with Obama being so well educated and well spoken. What's with his fixation on Caroline Kennedy dropping out. I know he's from the generation where we loved JFK and watched his kids grow up. David's got to calm down he's getting old.

I know we'll be hearing more bad news from every area of our Govenment and of course the free Wall Street Bailout money that banks used to party.  Looks like the new booming career choice will be a lawyer with so many cases to be heard in the future.

I did agree with you that when Obama was sworn in it helped alot with the Middle East conflict. Oh and I couldn't believe so many people didn't know a Obama become President at 12 noon no matter how the swearing in went. Look this was a first for both Obama and Roberts and who wouldn't make a mistake with 3 million people looking at you. I noticed you had some missteps last not that  didn't make the news Brian.

Best to my friends Lisa, Laurel, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Anna, Lori and Matt
Perhaps I missed it during the broadcast, but, I didn't see any mention of the government of Iceland failing on Monday nights broadcast. I would think that would at least warrant a mention?
On a different subject, Brian, you do a great job of relating. I am always impressed with your ability to say things that people in American can relate to. You are truly "believable". Thanks to you and your team for your eeffort!
I am not qualified. I do not want any part of it;  I can not write when there are so many details; I do not have a political mind & you know, i am not sure that I didn't say something stupid. I am not going to watch the news today/ this is between me & God. it is not right. I know it is a big movie for yall.  bye tesa
Brian;
Just a note to thank you for the entertainment on election day! Your team working Al Roeker over was the best. I was laughing as you were telling Al that the President was on the way and he was on the wrong side of the street and having a fit because the TV truck was going to be in the way and he would not be able to see them. But he did get the first weather report from the new Prez.  Good stuff.
Hope to see you at the Ice Cream store on Block Is.

For those who use the "less for more" products now being sold in grocery stores for cooking and baking, there is another "problem", especially for those who use canned and boxed goods for baking.  Has anyone been wondering why their favorite casseroles just aren't as good as they were a short while ago, or that the six-serving size of your casserole now seems to only be a five-serving size? Or that a baked goodie seems drier or wetter than it has ever been?  If your recipe calls for a can of "this" or a box of "that", but doesn't also give the ounces or weight of that can or box, it will be a bit difficult to know how much more of a second can or box to use to make up for the difference in the amount of product in said can or box.  Don't forget, as I did last week when I used the last of my "fresh-frozen" blueberries I picked this past summer to make my Lemon-Blueberry Bundt cake -- I didn't notice that the usual container of lemon yogurt is now 6 ounces instead of 8 ounces, and my cake was a whole lot drier, because I didn't think to check ... 2 ounces doesn't seem like much, but it most certainly can make a difference in baked goods!!!  So, the next time you think maybe you are imagining that your chocolate chip cookies seem to have less in the way of chocolate chips, it's not your imagination!!!
Dear Brian:
Love ya on Letterman, BUT when you're on The Daily Show...well, it's the BEST!
WOW screening posts that challenge your thinking!  Lost me as a viewer and defender.   Goodbye from a  disappointed viewer.
Nobody who thinks outside of NBC's box normally gets posted on this "blog".  My past love of NBC is dying hard, but it is dying.
