Crossing the border: Mexico's deadly drug war

Posted: Tuesday, January 13, 2009 3:57 PM by Daily Nightly Editor

By Mark Potter, NBC News Correspondent

While reporting on the vicious drug war inside Mexico, which claimed more than 5,000 lives there last year, we were shown a U.S. map that really put us on alert.

The map showed all the United States cities where federal law enforcement officials believe Mexican traffickers have set up smuggling operations. Each of
these American cities was marked in red and together they filled the country, from South to North, West Coast to East Coast.

As one official put it, when it comes to drugs, weapons and violence, "Our southwest border has now moved to Chicago, Atlanta and New York."
For many people, Atlanta is the real shocker. News that Mexican traffickers have spilled over into Phoenix, El Paso and other border towns is more easily
understood, given their locations. But drug agents talking about Atlanta becoming a major illicit drug distribution hub for Mexican cartels supplying the entire U.S. eastern seaboard is a different story.

Slowly, the traffickers moved into Atlanta and other towns in recent years by hiding among the already established immigrant communities.  The drug
trafficking business model they put together is quite sophisticated and hard to crack.

Smugglers work in cells to ensure security, answer directly to the drug cartel leadership in Mexico and use the same trucks which bring cocaine,
methamphetamines, marijuana and heroin into the United States to sneak billions  of dollars in cash from drug sales back into Mexico.

In a radical departure from legitimate business practices, the cartels establish loyalty and efficiency among suppliers and distributors through the use
of threats and violence.  (Atlanta and other cities are seeing a rise now in drug-related kidnappings, torture and murders.)

Tonight on NBC Nightly News we'll take a look at this serious problem and hear from some of the officials at the DEA and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms who are trying to fight it.

And as you watch, remember what officials from President Bush and Mexican President Felipe Calderon to agents and police on the mean streets have all
pointed out. The buyers of all those narcotics who are sending $11-billion a year to Mexican drug lords are American citizens. Almost all the powerful weapons the traffickers use also come from the United States.

As an ATF official told us, "This is a problem not just in Mexico.  This is our problem."

How come the map that they showed on the news is not on here.  I would like a closer look at it.  Thank you
The drug policy in our country is based on the premise 'As long as I have mine!  As long as I have my beer, wine, martini's, gin & tonic's and nicotine I'm going to say no to the people who want Marijuana, cocaine and heroin because quite frankly there's something's wrong with them and there's nothing wrong with me.'  All the drug lords have to do is get their product across the border and its sold. People use drugs to escape themselves so until we have a policy based on the premise 'Stoned or sober it doesn't make a difference because you're responsible either way!', we're fodder for the drug lords.
well this is a problem not just for our borders its actually for more that 2 countries this become to be a global treat, and it will come even worst if we dont do our part, drugs lead to violence and money to greed, but high tech and work in team and anti-drug education lead to future, mexico and u.s.a whit power to let know drug lords that a wise law they will never gonna win and they will surrend for sure!no more drugs! we dont need them!
In all the years of the DEA's existence, they have been LOSING, LOSING, LOSING their "war on drugs."  Their track record is at least as bad as Mexico's and so, the idea of these two countries combining their efforts seems to me rediculous.  After 30 years of absolute failure, perhaps another approach is in order.
Marijuana should be legal and definetly should not be punishable by jail time besides even the us government has sold drugs.I am so tired of the government spending my hard earned tax dollars to house somebody over weed or a drug addiction. When will the madness stop?
It's becoming more and more evident that stopping the trafficing of illegal drugs is an impossible dream. Perhaps if the funds and effort that are currently used for the above solution were rechanneled into earlier childhood drug awareness and better rehabilitation programmes,we may have a chance at winning the war on drugs. Diminish the cartels' clients and diminish the cartels.
The USA just has to have its drugs. Thousands killed and more thousands of lives and families destroyed just to meet the demand. Screw the others as long as we get what we want...way to go USA, you even provide the weapons.
Make marijuana legal, at least that way you will take a portion of the business away from the drug smugglers and put some drug dealers out of work. The US will benefit from the tax dollars. As of now the US has zero control over the "war on drugs" and it's only getting worse. it's time to do something radical and take a stand. make marijuana legal and some problems will go away. not all i admit but at least this is a start.
decrimmalize small scale growing of pot by US citizens for personal usuage and that will eliminate the importation of illegal smuggling and stop the flow of some of the drug money going south
i want to see said map.
Until America realizes that there are many in leadership positions in this country being enriched by the illegal drug industry, nothing is going to stop.  Their are Judges in Michigan enriching themselves by sentencing users to publicly funded rehab centers that are owned by those very same judges.  Half the people in our jails are there for possession, creating a multi-billion dollar industry to house victims of this plague.  Who owns the food, construction, and materials companies, etc. that service and build our jails.  These are just the ones enriching themselves legally.  How many more are behind the scenes driving and promoting illicit drug trade by hindering law enforcement and border protection.  The decay of our country being caused by those enriching themselves is the greatest threat to America today.  Sure, al Qaida is our enemy, but the greatest threat to us may live right down the street.
Bring the troops in Iraq home, and set up a 10 mile buffer zone on the mexican side of the border.  If it moves, mow it down. Greatly reduce illegals and drugs.
"....may be crossing the border."  No MAY about it - is has crossed the border.  One cure for that - stop ALL border crossing from our side of the border into Mexico.  And allow our Border Patrol to shoot to kill if they are attacked in any way by someone crossing illegally.  Drastic?  This is a war on our southern border and should be fought as such -
i agree w/in fav of legalization, pot is a plant, grows naturally, does not have to be processed and it consumed in its original states, want to control this problem then legalize it.  1/2 the battle is gone. the biggest drug pusher is the drug companies and the doctors working hand in hand to get rich anyway.
Sorry to go this way but its time to arm the border like we do our cities, engage the drug runners and mules, if you shoot enough of them and take thier drugs and cash the message may finaly get to them, not in my back yard. Will this fix the problem? No, but its a radical shift that will have better results for less taxpayers money.
Your legalization idea has a sound theory and actually can be built up to be a very real solution to a number of problems in this country. My proposal actually involves treating it as we do alcohol and be more of a complete solution on several matters. The problem is, nobody would actually put together the plan that I have and put it on the front page of the news for people to actually think about it. I wouldn't use it if it were legal, but my idea has nothing to do with that. Heck, maybe I should publish a paper on my plan. Anyone want to read it?
I just wonder if your Nation can spend lot of money in a war against drug dealers then way not to spend in programs about avoid people consume drugs?
This should solve the whole problem: No clients = No sales, no sales = no dealers, no dealers = more money to spend in culture, cience, sports = )
Oh, just for the record, if you buy sell or use any illegal substance, you are still a criminal for now. Legalize marijuana, OK, but prison sentences for anyone dealing any harder drugs as this problem is turning into a disaster for the future of our country. Sorry, I've tried things, I've seen things, it's a bad situation.
For all of you - Law Enforcement Against Prohibition

Ask any of the law enforcement pro's aligned with this group what the real solution is, it's the same as it was in the 1930's.
This story does n                          ot depict the severity of  Mexico's Drug problem. I live near the border and there has been many that have been abducted and many found tortured and decapitated or both! Mexico is on the verge of Collapse and noone is covering the story. The media covers bits and pieces but when you add them all up together..you get a threat more severe than the current wars. The threat has already been reported by military leaders as being more severe, yet the Government focuses on what they see as a priorty. In the mean time, Americans are being abducted, tortured and killed in the most in humane ways. I encourage you to take a look at the missing person's report in cities along the border.
Why only in the Mexican side exist the "Carteles" of Drugs? Here in USA does not exist "Carteles" just drug  dealers?
USA need to stop the demand of drugs, NO DEMAND = NO OFFERS = NO DRUGS.
If USA will not stop the internal consume of the drugs, them will still crossing the border.
AS A PERSON WITH TIES TO THIS DRUG EPIDEMIC,I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY TO THE PEOPLE OF THE USA THAT BY LEGALIZING POT IT WILL HELP FIGHT SOME OF THE PROBLEM AND REDUCE THE POCKETS OF MANY. THUS GIVING THE U.S THERE FIRST VICTORY!
If the U.S legalizes pot, than we might as well legalize all drugs. Pot is only a small percentage of what is being brought over the borders. We still have to deal with cocaine, methamphetamines, and so on...
Yea so lets legalize all drugs, build more drug rehabs and also build larger prisons. Either way we are still going to be fighting a war, whether its with mexican cartel or our own citizens. It's all just an impossible dream. It will never go away.
So, if people just can't resist lighting up, I say buy American.  It boosts local economies, keeps all that money from ending up in Mexico (or elsewhere) and reduces our dependence on foreign imports.  If domestic supply meets demand, the thugs will be out of business.
I agree bring in the troops from iraq to help fight
along the border with mexico.and put my money to good use keep the gangs and drugs out this country if they want to kill themselfs let them do it in mexico thats the way i feel.
IN THIS REPORT MARK POTTER STATES THAT THE GUNS USED BY THE DRUG CARTELS ARE PURCHASED AT GUN SHOWS AND PRIVATE DEALERS HERE IN THE U.S.. WELL, I GO TO THESE GUN SHOWS HERE IN CALIFORNIA AND KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THIS STATEMENT IS IN FACT A LIE. FRIENDS OF OURS WHO ARE LICENSED GUN DEALERS CAN'T PURCHASE THESE WEAPONS. FULLY AUTOMATIC WEAPONS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, EXCEPT BY LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES. PERIOD. YOU CAN'T EVEN GET A MAGAZINE THAT WILL HOLD MORE THAN 10 ROUNDS HERE. YOU CAN BUY A SEMI-AUTOMATIC WEAPON HERE, BUT THAT'S IT. I DON'T KNOW WHERE HE GOT THAT TIDBIT OF INFORMATION FROM, BUT I CAN ASSURE YOU, THAT THAT STATEMENT IS SIMPLY UNTRUE. PEOPLE LIKE THIS REPORTER TELL THE PUBLIC THESE "FACTS" SO THAT THE PUBLIC, WHO DON'T KNOW WHAT THE LAWS OF OWNING A GUN ARE, WILL BE IN FAVOR OF GUN CONTROL OUT OF FEAR. THIS WILL BE YET ANOTHER RIGHT TO YOUR CONSTITUTION YOU WILL BE GIVING UP, NAMELY THE SECOND AMENDMENT, YOUR RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS. THIS REPORTER SHOULD CHECK HIS SOURCES OF INFORMATION BEFORE MAKING THE STATEMENT HE MADE.
the problem in U.S.A is because we never stop ours closer relatives to use drugs no users no dealers
