From the Washington bureau

We're in Washington tonight -- we'll be spending a lot more time here in the days and weeks to come -- where we will originate the broadcast from our NBC News Washington Bureau. Among other things, I will tonight attend the retirement party of my friend Brit Hume. When I replaced Andrea Mitchell as White House correspondent back in 1993, Brit helped to show me the ropes. As I constantly pointed out to him, because of the vast gulf between our ages, he had many more years of on-air experience than I did. He was always decent and fair, and he was a fantastic and easy traveling partner in a job that required a lot of miles in tight quarters. Back then, of course, Brit was ABC's White House Correspondent. Wolf Blitzer was there for CNN and Rita Braver was in the CBS News booth next door. It was a great working relationship, competition aside. At the party tonight we hope to take a reunion photo of the four of us. Only Brit looks younger than he did back then.

We've got a lot of news for you tonight, and we hope you can join us from Washington.

Brian - Wish Brit a happy retirement from all your 'peeps' here.  Having watched him myself for some time  - I agree, he does look younger now - maybe it's the retirement plans - golf, I think.

I can't say I'm sorry to see the old neocon go. He looked like he was going to cry when he and the other Faux Noise pundits were forced to call the election for Obama. Good riddance!
Dear Brian,

Brit Hume.  Yes, I remember watching him back in the day, when he worked with the great Peter Jennings.  And, somewhere, I have a photo I snapped of you, as you stood on the White House lawn, setting up for a live shot.  It was taken the day Secretary Ron Brown died, I believe.

Say it isn't so - are you REALLY going to feature a story on Michelle Obama's "fashion sense?"  REALLY?  I can only speak for myself, but couldn't you commit that time to another story - i.e. give us extended coverage of the Gaza/Israel/Lebanon conflict?  It's bad enough that Richard Engel had to cool his heels on a hillside in Israel yesterday morning, while Matt Lauer wasted his breath interviewing that horrible Ann Coulter woman!  Priorities!

I did enjoy the photo-op in the Oval Office yesterday.  I think it was a truly great moment, although the body language was certainly telling.  And, leave it to Bill Clinton to throw in such an amusing non sequitur!  I love that man!  Also, I took note of the fact that George H.W. Bush, the most senior of all the former and sitting Presidents, had the LEAST amount of gray hair!  Impressive!

Ladies:  Did you notice that Barack Obama used the term, "usual suspects" in his interview with John Harwood?  Maybe he reads this blog!  Ha, ha.  It just so happened that the film ran on cable last night, too!

Richard Engel:  I really liked the five o'clock shadow you were sporting on "The Rachel Maddow Show" last night.  You wear it well.  I think you should go all out and grow a little soul patch!  My boyfriend wears one sometimes, and I love it!  To each his own.  I'm just saying.  :-)

Celine:  I saw "Frost/Nixon," too, but preferred "Doubt."  Meryl Streep is superb!  I didn't watch the "Frontline" report about the man in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, but I did tape it.  I've seen him interviewed before.  What a humble man.  We could all learn something.

To the "usual suspects" (Lisa, Jackie, Stephanie, Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt):  Lots of love!  XOXO
Brian with Change comes alot of new people and news ideas. It always help when your wife is VP of Fox News as Brit's wife is. It's nice you have such close friendships with other Journalist.

All the NBC views should be proud of Richard Engel for the only Journalist who has fully reported honestly fair/balance reports in the Israel/Palestine conflict.
Engel: Israel waiting until Obama’s inauguration to let reporters into Gaza, when ‘viewers simply won’t care.’»
I am so proud and all the viewers should be. I pray this ends for the sake of lives of both Israel/Palestin people.

See you same time same place

ps: Lisa I know your proud of Richard's reporting on such a difficult conflict. I watched his report and knew you were so proud.
You report the condemnation of Israel for what is happening to civilians in Gaza.  You have never condemned the terrorists for their disregard of international law - never mention that they embed themselves among civilians in order to create maudlin sympathy for them.  You did not mention, either, that northern Israel was bombed today.  Where is your balance?
Brian, I wish I was in Washington this month!  Thanks for bringing it all to us who can't be there.

I'm wondering what the big crisis is if so many millions of us aren't digital on February 17th.  Is this really a concern because people need TV?  Are they saying this is a public safety issue, because I didn't hear that in your report tonight.  I got my coupon and I've got my box hooked up, but I'm not happy about it.  I refuse to upgrade to fancy equipment when mine is running fine, so I don't Tivo; I record to DVD and watch later.  I can't do that anymore.  Never had cable; didn't grow up with it; why take on that bill in this economy?  If the government is really worried about us millions who have over-the-air exclusively, then they'll mandate the cable and satellite people to give us just ordinary channels for a very fair price.  I simply live in a stinky place for signals; even though NBC now comes in color but it is now pixelated b/c it just doesn't come in here.  I bought my box before Wall Street fell; I can certainly imagine most people aren't into spending money on a converter box when they can hardly buy heat, food, and meds.
I saw the bit about awarding Purple Hearts to combat vets with PTSD on this evening's broadcast and I feel it is better to leave the system the way it is now. Physical wounds are impossible to deny while emotional ones can be faked.

I served in Somalia during 1993 with the 10th Mountain Division. During the October 3rd-4th battle, some of my friends were killed or wounded and I have never been the same since then. It has ruined my life. I became a different person after that.

I don't deserve a purple heart. We had people come home with hands and legs missing. They earned the decoration and the benefits that come with it.

I probably should recieve disability, but I do not. I applied in 1996 and was approved, but did not understand what it meant at the time. I did not persue the claim. In 2007 I tried again and was denied.

It makes me angry to think about the phony claims being accepted at VA centers by returning soldiers who never heard a shot fired.
Enough is enough.  Extra people on screen (in the background)while Brian presents the news are very distracing.  A young lady sat at her desk to the rear and right of Brian during the program tonight.  She sat there and did her job but seemed to be the focus of attention at the wrong times.  It's almost as bad when he's in New York and you can see people walking around behind him.  What's wrong with a set and a neutral background?
Good Evening Mr.Williams, A fine broadcast from the Washington Bureau. First of all the report by Mr.Fletcher about the crisis in Gaza. Seeing the young child crying for his mother who was killed was simply heartwrenching. It is awful to learn he was in that demolished home for four days along with his cousins and the bodies within the rooms. Hearing the aunt say there were 70 of them and then two shells hit the home is frightening. These people need the help of the humanitarian groups because without the proper medicine, food and other supplies they cannot survive. It was horrible the driver bringing supplies to the area was killed. The people depend on this help and I hope soon there will be an end to this conflict.
Excellent reporting Mr.Fletcher. Please Stay Extra Safe!

On another note the report by Margaret Brennan about the dismal retail sales showed how many stores struggled to make sales during the holiday season and their profits were down considerably. So many stores closing their doors and the ones staying open offering deep discounts. The consumer spending wisely and like it was stated in the report this is the year of the never ending sale.

The report by Mr.Costello concerning the switch over to HDTV certainly exhibited how much this change has been spoken about over the last year. I can understand why President-Elect Obama wants to delay the switch because not everyone has the converter box or can afford one since the coupons have run out. It has been talked about everynight on the local NBC affiliate here in Atlanta. They show each evening a countdown to how many days are left until the switch. Perhaps it will be extended. Time will tell.
(I am happy I have Direct TV!)

The report by Amy Robach about Michelle Obama's style of clothing showed how the future First Lady always looks great and at afforable priced clothes. All the clothes she's worn have been really nice and reflect her style. She will always look great!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra Safe and Well Richard! Great to see you on Morning Joe this morning and on Rachel Maddow's show last evening!
XOXO

I sent an e-mail to NBS's general e-mail address on this subject and got no response, so now I'll try this route.  Let me first say that Brian Williams and NBC are my first choice for the nightly news. However, I've become increasingly irritated by the commercials for erectile dysfunction during the evening news hour.  I do not believe it should be NBC's decision as to when parents should have to educate their young children on erectile dysfunction.  Please advertise these products after the children have gone to bed and advertise products that are more appropriate for the dinner hour during the nightly news.
Mr.Brain Williams question? What about the soldiers that have gotten ALS it is not a bullet but is it a slow degenerative death. Should they recieve the purple heart.
Brian,
With all of the coverage on retailing's problems, how about a story on those firms that are RAISING prices amid this distress?  One that hit us directly was Kitchenaid prices going up 12% the first of the year?  We would call the item "Courageous?"

Don't forget to bring some eggnog to Brit Hume's retirement party.
Good evening,
I just finished watching the broadcast tonight and i must say NBC Nightly news is becoming another Access Hollywood. Do you really believe it is necessary to have a segment on the news about Michelle Obama's wardrobe?! Linking it to the current economic crisis does not excuse you from wasting several minutes speaking about the clothing a woman wears. There are more important things going on in the world than where Michelle buys her clothing!
For all the hoopla about big name news anchor blogs...it's kind of startling that this thing only gets a few hundred views!  Reminds me of when Brian was on MSNBC and would say, "...we are watched by tens and dozens of viewers."
This is the second night that you reported that they have not put Bernie Madoff in jail.  What is the hold up?
I am so sad to see Palestinian children maimed and in need. But, you also need to show Israeli children hit by Palestinian missiles. Both sides have learned nothing in 60 years. But, you need to keep your coverage balanced.

As for Mrs. Obama being compared to Jackie Kennedy-Onassis.....you need to stop that. Mrs. Obama is a remarkalbe woman who stands alone and needs not be referred to as the lower budget Jackie-O. Let us see Mrs Obama recognized for her intelligence.
Mrs. Obama is a remarkalbe woman and needs not become the lower budget version of Jackie Kennedy-Onassis.

Would you please respect Mrs. Obama for the person she is? She is nothing like Jackie-O.
Hi Brian great report tonight. I can see woman's fashion isn't your best topic. Mrs. Obama will make her personal mark as our First Lady. Every talks about Jackie Kennedy and I think Michelle will make her own History as her own person.

Good to hear things might work out in the Israel/Palestine conflict. The Media is reporting Obama will meet with the Democratic Election Hamas to try to end his conflict and save lives.

Right now some Republicans and Democrats are not supporting Obama's Economic Plan but after Jan. 20th when all the Law Makers see the turn out here in the US and the celebrating overseas they will change their mines. We allowed Bush to put us in the biggest debt in history and no Law Maker said a word and Congress gave Bush a blank check. Now to help the American people the Law Makers want to wait. The 700 billion dollar bailout was done quick on the word of Hank Paulson and President Bush. Now all the money is gone and not accounted for as the Law Makers don't say anything. Law Makers got a big raise in salary will Americans are in a recession. Only in America can a Govenment who has done a poor job get a big raise like the CEO's.  John Boehner doesn't want to allow the help to the American people but the people from Ohio that he represents are one of the States in the worse Economy.

Best to my friends Lisa, Laurel, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Anna, Lori and Matt
Brian,

I've decided to stop watching your online nightly news as I am tired of watching the 40 SECOND GENTITAL HERPES commercial you guys air after EVERY STORY.

DITCH THE COMMERCIALS!

Don't you guys have enough money aleady?
Mrs. Obama is not Jackie Kennedy-Onassis, and please stop comparing them. Mrs. Obama is an accomplished person whose dress style is a microscopic part of her personna.
It is sad to see the media starting to focus on what our First lady Elect is wearing versus her intellect.
I was very confused by the report on the broadcast by Margaret Brennan about the slide in retail sales.  She reported something to the effect that sales are the worst they've been in 25 years.  What does that mean?  To me it means that the total revenue for the sector is lower than it has been at any time over the last quarter century--or perhaps that the sales per store or the sales per consumer were the lowest.  However, later in the story, she said something to the effect that WalMart's sales were up only 2%.  If they were up at all, then they wouldn't be the lowest in 25 years, unless WalMart is a total anomaly.  Stil, it would be useful to be clear on the point to distinguish if the sales were the lowest, or the rate of change from the previous year is the lowest.

Thanks.
I was watching the news last night and saw about the purple heart issue, and I am a veteran with PTSD and I personnaly believe that PTSD is like a real wound. I have nightmares and flashbacks everyday. My whole family goes though this with me.
Reference your broadcast yesterday sharing the position of the Pentagon regarding the Purple Heart medal is not authorized for PTSD.

I would like to share a letter to the Star & Stripes Newspaper submitted this week.

Why is Public Law for awarding the Purple Heart to wounded POWs followed only by the USAF?

Guidelines during 1943, and 1944 describing circumstances for the Purple Heart recognized severe frostbite as a wound during combat.  Since 23 August 1951, frostbite was classified as an "accident".

The following is a portion of a letter by the Army Awards Branch:

29 June 1998

Change 5 to AR 600-45 dated 11 Nov, 1944, which permitted award of the Purple Heart to personnel severely frostbitten while actually engaged in combat.  Again, trench foot was not considered as meriting award of the PH.

On  23 Aug 1951, Army policy changed and award of the PH was no longer authorized for frostbite injuries.  Such injuries incurred thereafter were considered to accidental in nature and not the direct result of enemy action.

Conclusion:  It is concluded from the above referenced documents that the PH was authorized for severe cases of frostbite between 13 Nov 1943 and 21 Aug 1951.  Trench foot was never officially recognized as meriting award of the PH.

Military Awards Branch___END.

What is the justification for Army Board for Correction of Military Records (ABCMR) denying the Purple Heart to former WWII wounded POWs?  According to AR 600-45, dated 22 September 1943, (initial guideline providing definition of a wound for the Purple Heart to WWII military and civilian personnel), C4 3 May 1944, (establishes severe frostbite as a wound), and Public Law 104-106, dated February 10, 1996 authorizes the Purple Heart for any wound identified in the definition. (PL applies to POWs held prior to 25 April 1962).

Today members of ABCMR, and Army Awards Branch continue to ignore or misinterpret the guidelines identified.  I base the previous statement on action by AFBCMR approving the Purple Heart for like wounds experienced by former WWII AAF personnel that came under jurisdiction of the AF in 1957.

Furthermore, the legal opinion by a retired Colonel JAG officer (currently a local attorney) states they are eligible for the Purple Heart.

I believe the track record of the Army reveals lack of support, basing their decisions on more recent guidelines that are not retroactive, and do not pertain to WWII era. Where is the enforcement members of Congress?

Brian looks like a very nice person.  Since he is in Washington, DC, what are his thoughts on the U.S. Supreme Court approving of bribery and perjury by allowing the Supreme Court Clerk, William Suter, to deny the meritorious case Suzanne Carey v. Valerie Johnson (EEOC)?  All nine Honorable Justices ruled in favor of Carey on or about October 6, 2008, but Mr. Suter issued a letter claiming that her case was denied.  Most recently, a Justice Official informed her that Mr. Suter denied her case because he was under the impression that she was a Republican because she has familial ties to the late President Richard Nixon.  Mr. Suter is extremely left-wing and hates anyone who doesn't share his creed, and Carey is a politically neutral party, since she is one of Jehovah's Witnesses.  The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals was very mean and sarcastic to her, telling her things that weren't true.

Anyway, my understanding is that the U.S. Supreme Court is willing to straighten out this mess, but I thought I would ask you just in case.

Best regards,
Mr. Williams,

Are you in need of an assistant?  I am a loyal fan of nightly news and would love to join the team.
