There's news on Christmas Eve

Posted: Wednesday, December 24, 2008 4:48 PM by Sam Singal

By Ann Curry, NBC News anchor

Christmas Eve but news doesn't stop, and Executive Producer Bob Epstein starts our 2:30 talking about getting live pictures of the Midnight Mass underway at the Vatican at 6:30 ET tonight.

The good news is prayers are being answered today in the US. A break in the weather is allowing flights to take off and trains to run, so finally stranded holiday travelers are on their way home.

That isn't to say the weather nightmare ended. In Seattle, during the deicing of one plane the fluid got in the cabin and sickened some of the passengers.

Ron Allen has that story tonight, and will also have the other lingering weather problems nationwide, along with the forecast for Christmas Day.

We also have some news a lot of people can really use right now, there are huge discounts, by as much as 70 percent, in stores.

There is also a fantastic story by Jim Maceda about a man who gave up his law career to be a humanitarian 19 years ago, and has since become a force for good in the lives of children victimed by war in Afghanistan.

And Brian's story about the 40th anniversary of Apollo 8's flight around the moon, meant to run last night, will definitely run tonight. With all the troubles America faces on this Christmas Eve, seeing this first long view of our planet from space, may again lift us, reminding us we will rise again.

Always enjoy you Ann. Check out www.espn.com the story by Rick Reilly about the Texas Football Teams. Really a good story.
On tonight's broadcast it was mentioned that the president elect and his wife will be attending up to ten inaugural balls on January 20.  Considering the current economic and political turmoil this country is experiencing, perhaps it would be prudently patriotic for the Obamas to attend a dinner with the several thousands of unemployed Americans who will be spending that night not indulging in excess, but in a homeless shelter.
Dear Ann Curry; Thank You for an excellent broadcast tonight. we hope you have a merry christmas and a great new year.
Hi Ann,

Great broadcast tonight. I hope all of this horrible weather people are having calms down soon. If only it would even out to where no one would get too much snow, and everyone would get a little.

Brian's report on Apollo 8 was wonderful! I love that story. The perfect timing for the horribly eventful year of 1968. I also really love that out of everything that those men could say they choose to recite Genesis, what an amazing moment in our history.

Thank you for wishing us all a Merry Christmas! I wish you and everyone at NBC a very Merry Christmas full of Love, Laughter and Family and a blessed New Year to come!

I pray for our soldiers safety, especially on this Christmas Eve night.

Take Care,
-Cary
Good Evening Ann, Merry Christmas to You! I thought I would comment on two reports tonight that were very nice to see. The first one being the "Making A Difference" segment by Mr.Maceda from Afghanistan. The doctor Alberto Cairo working at the International Red Cross and rebuilding limbs for those injured by the terrible conflicts in the region shows how one person can really help so many others. Hiring disabled people to help the disabled is a good thing and gives such hope to each person. Seeing the effects of war over so many years is devastating and if those people can be given a new outlook on life and express a real gratitude it is all worth it. A good piece!
The other report by Mr.Williams concerning Apollo 8 and its orbiting the moon in 1968. Bringing new light and hope with all the images brought back by the astronauts. They didn't realize what an impact they were going to have after a tumultous year. Accomplishing what they set out to do. Truly a great moment!
Thank You Ann! Merry Chritmas to You and Your Family! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Safe and Well Richard! Happy Holidays to You!
XOXO
merry christmas and Happy new year to all of you
Ann, exactly what do you mean by, "The good news is prayers are being answered today in the US?"  Clearly, you believe that the break in the weather is directly attributable to divine intervention.  If prayers are being answered, you're stating that god exists.  If you (as a representative of NBC News) have concrete evidence of this, then please share it with your viewers.  We would all be very interested, as it would be quite a major news scoop.  If not, you should refrain from making statements supporting the existence of a deity.  You are supposed to be a journalist, and journalists report actual news.  Journalists don't offer conjecture about the existence of beings that have no basis in fact.  When acting as an employee of NBC News, please keep your religious beliefs to yourself.
