Cowboy dustup

So a friend of mine who is a proud product of the American West took issue with an event in Chicago today: the President-elect's choice for Interior Secretary, Colorado Senator Ken Salazar, wore a cowboy hat to a press conference. Indoors.

My buddy was not pleased. "A proper cowboy," he said in an email, "knows not to wear a hat indoors." I called another friend in Montana who agreed, while bemoaning the general dismantling of societal rules governing such things.

I'm just throwing it out there. Tossing it in the hat, so to speak. If we seem to be in a hurry to get off the air tonight, it's because we're having a little gathering for the holidays. It's my annual chance to thank the staff for being the very best at what they do.

your recent intro of c. kennedy said daughter of a martyred pres. he hardly fits the definition and you do her an injustice by trying to portray her as something she is not
Hi Brian
The hat look good to me as long as he can do the job.

Illinois AG did good at fooling the Media for attention as the Court turned down her request to remove the Govenor. Smart move on her part as most don't know the law and she used it for publicity for her campaige for the Govenor's seat.

Good news for the Madoff victims as some are reporting the Govenment might give them back the money that was stolen. It'is good to be friends of the White House. As millions lost their jobs, homes and life saving with no chance to recover anything. But using the Taxpayers money is a decision of the White House.

I hope everyone enjoys the Christmas Party. It seems some aren't effected by the recession like the Govenor of Alaska got a 25,000 dollar raise for herself only, Lehman Bros.'s CEO Richard Fuld's wife is spending big time. The Auto Company is closing for a month while paying white collar workers their salary and Union workers get nothing. Where's Santa?

See you same time same place 6:30 pm
Your friend is right of course, but somewhere the rules changed, just like with baseball caps, they are now considered "part of the outfit" and as such need not be removed.... My grandmother would roll over in her grave.

But then I'm glad I no longer have to wear white gloves as well as a hat... (Did I just date myself?)

Good Evening Mr.Williams, A fine broadcast this evening. First of all the report by Mr.Maceda concerning the war in Afghanistan. The Commander John Nicholson certainly faces a tough fight everday in  southern Afghanistan and has endured many horrible attacks by the taliban. He is dedicated and determined to keep fighting off the taliban and make the region safer for the citizens. Hearing that his office was hit on September 11th and he happened not to be there at the time makes him even more determined to do his duty. He does not have all the answers and certainly cannot fix everything as he stated, but knowing how he is tough, strong and brave making him such a good commander he made progress already and hopefully will make even more. I hope peace comes to the region someday and all the soldiers can come home. God Bless all our brave soldiers.
On another note the piece by Mr.Taibbi about Sears and its commitment to helping employees in the military was truly nice and shows how the company makes sure the employees don't lose any pay or benefits to them and their family. Hearing how they were covered for medical benefits and they received merit increases was encouraging news. Even in the struggling economy right now they still will make sure thet veterans are covered is truly wonderful. Good Piece Mr.Taibbi!
With regards to Senator Ken Salazar now nominated for Secretary of the Interior wearing a cowboy hat indoors, maybe he should have taken the hat off. I don't ever recall seeing anyone who was being named to a Cabinet post wearing a cowboy hat, but times change.
Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Have a wonderful time at your holiday gathering! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Safe and Well Richard! Great seeing you on the Today Show this morning! I read a posting about Richard on TV Newser today and if it works out it would be SUPER! Your Awesome! Excellent reporting always!
XOXO

Thank you for showing the piece on Sears supporting their employees who are in the Armed Forces. Like many Sears employees, I've known about this program forever, and forever is 43 years with the company. I would challenge other companies to do the same for their employees who serve. IT's the least we could do for them, when they do so much for all of us.
My wife and I enjoy your newscast very much. Thanks for giving us the news the way we like it.
Well Obama learned to wear the lapel pin, & show respect for the flag of his country. I guess the Interior sec will have to learn the protocol of the west. Its all for show anyway. Im still not convinced that any of them really have the interests of this country at heart. It about the resume. As someone said " Where have all the leaders gone?"
LMAO I'll bet you're right on this one Jackie. Seeing how Bernard "Made Off" is a big liberal democrat money man, most of his "victims" are probably the same, and banaancrats have total control of both houses and soon the white house they'll all probably be bailed out. You gotta love the logic of Barney Franks. Bananacrats set up the plan, but the reason it didn't work is because President Bush opposed it. I remember President Bush promoting the plan in pressers. I can't wait to watch these political cowards try to operate without a Bush to hide behind.

WTG Sears!!!! Given a "need" and choice I'll head your way next time.
Hi Brian Williams,

Our nation needs to remember its values of Freedom and Liberty!!

I have been a tremendous fan of yours. You are a phenominal anchor man. So I just want to give you a shout out to your incredible professionalism and being on top of these very trying and critical times our nation and fellow service-man and women are facing today! This country needs not to bleed its colors and stay united!!
I commend your brilliance and strong determination to dedicate your thoughts of the issues we face today in our sluggish economy with your broadcasts. Thank you very much  for all your support and admiration to challenge the views and issues today. You make history in  every broadcast!
Happy Holidays to you and your family!

Yours truly patriotic,

Scott R. Green
Brian, I work in Wickenburg, Arizona, the fourth most western town in America (according to True West Magazine, Feb., 2008).Seems like there is no hard and fast rule about cowboy hats indoors. It's all up to the individual cowboy as is in keeping with western tradition.
Checking in from Colorado...I live on the high plains (ranching country) and I always see cowboys wearing their hats indoors.   (This includes cowboys of all ages, not just the young ones.)  I didn't think twice about Senator Salazar keeping his hat on for the news conference until reading Brian's blog.

Have fun at the party tonight
Sears is good to their military employees and it's nice to see them treated well. Good news this year my food/gift I sent through the US Post office and they now give discounts for packages sent to the troops. Since I saved money I brought more and sent more. No worries the packages have already arrived safely.

Madoff is being investigated and the investigaters are being investigated. It was smart to keep the Family out of investing in the business so they don't lose any money. But now the Attorney General's son is involved. How deep does this crime go and now many more inside players were there.

Brian I have a feeling things will be much better in the Middle East in 2009, at lease for our soldiers. Aghanstan can't be won with combat it takes stronge honest Leadership and respect with talks not guns. We have a stronge President/Vice President and a super Secretary of State who can true this thing around and bring our troops home. We have to stop policing the World and forcing US Democracy on other Countries.

Have a great night

Best to my friends Lisa, Laurel, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Anna, Lori and Matt
And that report gives us an excellent reason to shop Sears!

Take care all-
Mr. Williams,
I am one who is beginnin to think that President-elect Obama missed something in his unpbringing.  Why would he let that fool wear his hat at such a serious matter as this.  I suppose the fool will wear his hat insdie the White House to cabinet meetings. He does not deserve the appoitment.

Perhaps our Presidentpelect needs a crash course in "social graces."

Shalom.,
James C. Vaughn, Jr.
In this time of layoffs it was so nice to hear how loyal Sears is to their employees. Most people I know couldn't qualify for a 5 year gold watch let alone a 50 year gold watch. Sears promotes loyalty and I, for one, value this very much.
Nice reporting!!
I find it interesting that Caroline Kennedy has always used her married surname - Schlossberg - for many years - yet suddenly has dropped it lately . Why is that ?
Thank you for the wonderful story about Sears. I liked it so much, I wrote about it in my blog and provided both a link to Sears and to your MSNBC video on this topic. You can read about it at http://mrterrycreditcardhelp.blogspot.com/

I have not shopped at Sears in some time, but I now have them on my list for this week. Plus I sent a link to all my friends to go view your story.

Great job, and a wonderful topic, especially in a time when there is so much bad news on the corporate front.

Thank you for that story!!
Brian Williams is, in my opinion, the best broadcast journalist on television hands down.

However, Chuck Todd is making NBC Nightly News increasingly harder and harder to watch.  It was bad enough to watch him practically beam with happiness as he would present the latest poll numbers showing then candidate Barack Obama with a considerable lead during the campaign.  Then on this evening's broadcast (12/18) he leaves little doubt about how he feels about Obama asking Rick Warren to deliver the invocation on 20 January when Chuck Todd said Obama should "fix" the situation with some fellow Democrats upset with the selection of Rick Warren, who favors marriage between a man and a woman.

Fix it?!

Who says it's broken?

Maybe some of us viewers agree with Obama on this selection of Warren and that Obama should stand behind his decision rather than cower because of some outspoken people in his own party.  On top of this, viewers like me don't care and don't want to know Chuck Todd's opinion or political leanings.

If it's not too much to ask, be objective.

Tim Russert left very big shoes to fill, but so far Chuck Todd hasn't even put his socks on.
SENATOR SALAZAR- ALL HAT AND NO CATTLE. JUST ANOTHER BANANACRAT. ALL OF THE MANURE IS NOT ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOOTS, AS THE OLD SAYINGS GO.
greetings I am verry displeased about the so called presidents because they are all idiots they have no idea about how to build a house they think that giving zillions of dollers to the deep pocketed billionares will help the ecconimy  they are wrong you build a house from the bottom  which are the homeless and low income people give the money to us the down trodden and we will fix the ecconime because everyone who ever built a building knows you never build a roof first  you build the foundation first well the poor and homeless are the real foundation of our planet but the politicions and media are so stuped they forget about us give me several hundred trillian zillian dollaes i wiill fix the ecconimy with in three years and repair the whole world and bring about world peace in the p[rocess to boot  because i know just what to do
if i were the world leader there would be no more daseases no mpore sickness hunger no more fighting just peace on this planet obama has three years if he doesnt fix the problem im going to start pushing my way to become world leader and i will bring this world into a much needed new erra
Brian:

A huge fan here.
So appreciate your journalistic integrity.
And while the world supplies us with a boat load of negativity, you always close on a positive and upbeat note.
As a former veteran and Peace Corps Volunteer, please continue to honor those who serve, its the least we can do for them.
God bless.
How do the dumb politicians think they can cut taxes on the poor, unemployed workers, lower paid social security recipients, fixed income or no income  elderly, and low wage earners that are in this
fiasco. Dumb is as dumb does!! They are almost as dumb recommending tax cuts as the two politicians
who sat on their rears and didn't regulate Fanny and Freddie, took money from them, and by their non-action are bringing this great nation to its knees. Creating jobs and alternative energy is first and second priority.
Whether it's a cowboy hat or a baseball cap, manners don't change.  Keep your hat off indoors, Senator---and all of the rest of us.
